Mystery

Date Published: February 18, 2026

Narrator: Greg O'Donahue

Run time: 5 hours 20 minutes.

EARLY SNOW

Odyssey Pruit paints pictures of the ghosts and spirits she saw in the halls of an old hotel where she worked ten years before. GUY HOGAN doesn’t believe in ghosts. Hogan is hired to guard Odyssey’s pictures for her first art show in the same old hotel. When an early blizzard closes the roads, knocks out the power and telephone, Hogan is trapped in the hotel with Odyssey’s quirky fans. When imps and ghouls make their presence known, Hogan questions his doubts, and the answer could be murder.

Interview with Kevin Wolf

Could you tell us about any research trips you took for this story? Which places did you visit, and what made them essential to your writing?

My wife and I make our home in Estes Park, CO. Estes Park is a resort community in the Colorado mountains about an hour and a half drive from Denver. The elevation 7522 feet above sea level. Estes is best known as the gateway city to Rocky Mountain National Park. Each year, over four million tourists, vacationers and adventurers visit the Park for the wildlife, alpine meadows, rivers and stunning mountain vistas. I live here. In 2025, I published TRAILRIDGE, the first novel in the Guy Hogan series. The mystery/adventure is set in Estes and the National Park. EARLY SNOW is the second book. In TRAILRIDGE , Guy Hogan stumbles upon a body in his favorite trout stream. When he seeks answers, he finds an elk poaching ring and is led into a series of outdoor escapades. In EARLY SNOW, Hogan is tested by the legends of ghosts that haunt the town, and the story is set entirely in an old hotel. My research is outside my office window or a twenty-minute drive into the national park.

Have any of the people you've known, past or present, left a lasting impression on your writing journey? If so, we'd love to hear about a memorable experience that stands out to you.

I was at a small writers’ conference in Crested Butte, CO. I was trying to learn all the things I need to know to become a writer. Robert Dugoni, the Best-Selling Mystery Author, was one of the speakers. He had seen some of my work and invited me to talk. We skipped a morning session and talked for about an hour. He pointed out some things in my writing, told me he thought I had some talent and encouraged me to keep at it. Anne Hillerman has been available and encouraged me. But my source of encouragement, is the writers from the different critique groups I’ve been a part of. There have been kind words from others who are fighting the battles.

Do you write in the same genre all the time?

I dabble in several genres. Everything I have written share a strong Western theme. My first published novel was the 2015 Tony Hillerman Award winner. THE HOMEPLACE is a contemporary mystery set on Colorado’s Eastern plains. A local hero returns home for the first time in sixteen years to the secrets of a small town. In 2021, Western Writers of America selected BELTHANGER as BEST SHORT FICTION winner. A boy who doesn’t fit in observes his small town one night from the window of his father's auto parts store. With THE BOOTHEEL, 2023 PEACEMAKER AWARD finalist, an aging gunfighter and a teenage cowboy follow a treasure map into Old Mexico. TRAILRIDGE is an action adventure set in the Colorado Mountains and with EARLY SNOW I was able to touch on the paranormal.

Kevin Wolf is an award-winning Mystery and Western author. His books include Trailridge (2024), The Homeplace, winner of the 2015 Tony Hillerman Prize and the 2016 Strand Critics Award finalist for Best Debut Mystery. His short story Belthanger received the 2021 Spur Award for Best Short Fiction and his novel, The Bootheel was a 2024 Peacemaker Award finalist.

The legends and landscape of the West are evident in everything he writes. His newest novel, Trailridge, is set against the grandeur of Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park and the 1982 Lawn Lake Flood. Those who visit Rocky often or have chosen the national park for their once-in-a-lifetime destination will recognize the mountains, valleys, rivers, and the twists and turns of Trailridge as this story races to its climax.

In The Homeplace, a schoolboy hero returns after sixteen years to solve a murder in a windswept, dying town on the eastern plains of Colorado. In his short story Belthanger, readers are given a glimpse of a 1950s small town, soon to be bypassed by the new Interstate Highway System, and the drama that unfolds on the town’s darkened streets one night. The BootHeel is a coming-of-age tale of a teenage orphan and an aging gunman as they follow a treasure map into Mexico as the nineteenth century draws to its end.

Kevin Wolf is a member of Western Writers of America, Mystery Writers of America, and serves as Vice President of Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers. He facilitates a weekly critique group for other writers. The great-grandson of Colorado homesteaders, he enjoys fly fishing, old Winchesters, and almost every 1950’s Western movie. He lives in Estes Park, CO with his loving and patient wife.

A gripping small town murder mystery

In the quiet coastal town of Keansbury, reputation is everything.

Justice, they believe, will be swift.

Attorney Katie Russo isn’t so sure.

Invited to review what seems like an open-and-shut prosecution, Katie begins to notice small inconsistencies buried beneath the surface of the investigation. As she looks deeper, she discovers a community bound by loyalty, economic dependence, and an unspoken understanding that some truths are better left alone.

With the trial approaching and tensions mounting, long-held assumptions begin to fracture. In a place where reputation defines identity and silence protects power, the search for truth threatens far more than a single verdict.

TRIAL BY TOWN is a character-driven small town murder mystery about justice, moral ambiguity, and the quiet pressure of a town determined to protect its own.

Perfect for readers who enjoy small town suspense, courtroom drama, and mysteries where the truth hides behind reputation and power.

EXCERPT:

“Mr. VanAnt, as you may know, the Professor asked me to speak with Miss O’Neill. I did so only to be of help.” She made certain her tone continued calm and reassuring, not wanting to give the misimpression that she was speaking as a defense attorney. “Miss O’Neill is unwavering in her claim of innocence.”

He was quick to respond, the red deepening in color. “I’m not surprised by anything she says. She’s always been a strange girl. Her uncle was strange. I guess it was just in the genes. However, that’s not an excuse. Mrs. Russo, as far as myself and this community are concerned, she killed him. Whether by accident or intentional, she killed him. The sooner she’s removed from here, the better. We have enough to deal with without her presence being a constant painful reminder.”

He tried to take another sip of coffee, but his shaking hand made him unsteady. A small amount poured onto the table. Katie grabbed a few napkins to blot up the puddle. She worried that she may have pushed him too far, but as concerned as she felt for him, she was compelled to continue the discussion.

“I can only imagine the pressure you’ve been under. The Professor mentioned that Mr. Keans Sr. has had virtually no involvement with the business since his son’s death.”

He paused a moment, then looked directly at Katie. “One does what one needs to do to survive. I have a responsibility to our customers, our workers, our community, and our families. A lot of people have been affected by this tragedy, and I’ll do everything and anything it takes to see that this business continues.”

Katie felt a chill up her spine. His words almost sounded like a threat. Perhaps he wasn’t quite the gentle giant she had thought. It was clear that the conversation had gone as far as it was going to go. “I’m certain you have everyone’s support and appreciation.”

Katie glanced at her watch and noted the lateness of the hour. “I’ve taken up enough of your time.” She rose and extended her hand. “This was an unexpected pleasure meeting you, and I very much enjoyed the tour.”

“Likewise.” He held the chair for her, the way a gentleman did in an old black-and-white film, and then escorted her to the elevator. “I hope you don’t mind if I say goodbye here. I have a few hours of paperwork ahead of me and I’d better get started.”

“Not at all. Again, thank you.”

He stood there looking at her until the doors closed. The chill she got earlier seemed to return. She tried to explain away her discomfort. After all, he had a right to feel such anger, and it wasn’t directed toward her. More chills as she walked briskly to the car, only this time, they were caused by the late afternoon breeze off the water. She slid into the seat and turned on the engine and the heater and waited until she was sufficiently warmed. As she drove out the gate, she thought about his words. Other than Jennifer, everyone she’d spoken to since arriving were aligned in their sentiment, although none expressed it so succinctly as Mr. VanAnt. “The sooner she’s removed from here, the better.” Katie rounded the bend, happy to be heading toward the comfort of the Professor’s home.

As he lost sight of her car, VanAnt drew the blinds and returned to his paperwork.

In her 70s, Sharon completed three triathlons, obtained dual Italian–American citizenship, and wrote her first book—living proof that bold dreams don’t come with an expiration date. She brings a poetic sensibility to her storytelling, blending suspense with empathy and nuance. Review: Ipsum Esse (The Unfallen Series (Landon Walker Thrillers) #8) by Judah Lamb

Ipsum Esse

Landon Walker Thrillers

The Unfallen Series #8

by Judah Lamb

Published: March 31, 2025

Genre: Contemporary, Christian Fiction, Christian Suspense

Blurb:

He drove north to find his father. He found a monster who made him tea.

Landon Walker and his brother Caleb were never just sons. They were subjects.

A rogue geneticist. A program designed to open the mind to the spiritual plane. A binding coded into their very genes.

Now their father wants to explain. And every answer is worse than the last.

Can brotherhood survive a betrayal that began before birth?

A charismatic predator is rising from the shadows to reclaim what she built. Her operatives are already closing in.

When the angel falls silent, where do you turn?

Two brothers. A dark inheritance. A nationwide conspiracy.

Faith says they were loved into existence. Science says they were manufactured. The enemy says they belong to him.

Not everyone will survive the truth.

Ipsum Esse is the eighth book in The Unfallen, a fast-paced Christian supernatural thriller series where spiritual warfare meets edge-of-your-seat suspense. Ancient evil. Campus conspiracies. Brothers forged in fire and bound by something stronger than genetics. If you love Frank Peretti's This Present Darkness, the theological depth of Ted Dekker, or the relentless pacing of Lynette Eason and Colleen Coble, Landon Walker's story will keep you turning pages long past midnight. The X-Files meets The Chosen.

My Review:

Landon Walker and his newly found brother Caleb Mercer are setting out on a quest to find their father. Sarah showed interest in joining them, but Landon chose this moment to strengthen his bond with his brother.

As Landon and Caleb uncover the truth, they are shocked to realize that their father has been conducting experiments on them since the very beginning of their existence. What a cruel and sinister person their father has turned out to be.

Landon and Caleb are left contemplating the meaning of their existence. Why do they exist? What purpose do they serve? Some believe it is rooted in love, while others think it is simply for the sake of experimentation.

Their father wishes to clarify his motives behind his actions. However, the pressing question remains: will Landon and Caleb accept this explanation? On one hand, do they genuinely desire to know? On the other hand, what prompted their journey? Perhaps it was simply a chance to deepen their connection. Can they find it within themselves to forgive this man for his past transgressions and move forward?

Ipsum Esse is a remarkable addition to The Unfallen Series by Judah Lamb. The intrigue, suspense, and uncertainty kept me engrossed as I hurried toward the conclusion to uncover all the answers I was seeking.

Ipsum Esse starts at a slow pace, carefully guarding its secrets and revealing them gradually. It was a tense experience, capturing my focus from the very beginning and holding it without respite as I waited for the truth to unfold.

I am eagerly looking forward to the next installment in the Landon Walker series to learn more about Landon and Caleb and to see where their lives take them next.

I wholeheartedly recommend Ipsum Esse to all fans of mystery and suspense! Be sure to pick up a copy of Ipsum Esse today!

About the Author

G.D's storytelling spark was ignited in the hallowed land of Wales, where his childhood was spent exploring the sea until the legendary midnight summer twilight. His journey led him through academia, earning degrees in Computer Science and Operations Management, culminating in a PhD focused on Virtual Reality.

While pursuing his studies in Nottingham, he met his wife. Together, their spirit of adventure took them first to New Zealand, where G.D worked in the video game industry and taught Scuba Diving. A seemingly simple job inquiry brought them to California, a place they planned to "try for one year," and where they still reside almost fourteen years later in Redondo Beach.

The family, which welcomed their son in 2012, is completed by Rhea, their quirky German Shepherd. Rhea became the key inspiration for G.D's first book, ABC's With Rhea, A doggy journey through the alphabet. Having observed that children learn best through stories, G.D wrote this book to craft a specific, relatable world for each letter, encouraging children to connect deeply with the subject.

He has recently published his second book, Olly's Journey, and is already hard at work weaving new tales and adventures for his readers.

G.D's mission is to empower children to pursue their own creative writing journey.

Cover Reveal: Almost There: A Collection Inspired by True Stories of the Jewish Immigrant Experience by Jean Seager @RABTBookTours

A Collection Inspired by True Stories of the Jewish Immigrant Experience

Historical Fiction

Publisher: Acorn Publishing

Almost There offers an intimate, emotionally resonant portrait of the Jewish immigrant experience in early twentieth-century America. This collection of linked short stories follows individuals who faced the uncertainty of a new land, summoned the courage to navigate unfamiliar cultures, and endured the antisemitism that shaped their world.

While fictionalized, these narratives were inspired by interviews with Americans who shared memories of their immigrant ancestors. Their stories unfold against the backdrop of sweeping historical events, such as the Great Depression, World War II, the Holocaust, and the founding of the State of Israel.

Poignant and powerful, Almost There illuminates a pivotal chapter in American history and speaks to the timeless search for belonging, identity, and home.

About the Author

Award-winning writer Jean Seager graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, and received two graduate degrees from San Diego State University. Her writing has appeared in the

literary publications Mikrokosmos and The Long Story. In 2018, her story “The Award” won second place in the San Diego Public Library’s short story contest.

A granddaughter of Jewish immigrants who came to America from eastern Europe in the early twentieth century, Jean was fascinated by her mother’s stories of growing up as a second-generation immigrant in Tennessee’s tobacco country. The Jewish immigrant experience continued to intrigue her and became the catalyst for her writing.

Jean is a native Californian and long-time resident of Coronado, a suburb of San Diego, where she lives with her husband Bill.
