Teenage girls don’t fall in love with ghosts, discover their magical powers or save their families from demons, or they?

Book Description

Forced to leave the few friends she’s ever had and the only life she’s ever known, snarky fifteen-year-old Marissa arrives at Briar Creek, a remote Virginia plantation house, lonely and unhappy. Immediately upon arrival, she learns that her parents have come under the power of the demon that has dwelled there for over a century and that her very life hangs by a thread. With her life in peril, Marissa makes several discoveries that would turn any teenager’s life upside down.

Finding out that the nearby town of Mills Run is inhabited by the souls of her dead relatives who continually try to communicate with her is terrifying. Knowing her parents are under full control of the demon, who unbeknownst to her wants to father a child and rule the world, is even worse. Realizing that she only has Max, her faithful dog for support, Marissa begins to give up all hope.

That’s until she finds the journal of the long dead boy who used to occupy her room. Reading about his life, Marissa begins to fall in love and fantasizes about the seemingly impossible, meeting him. Her impossible dream miraculously comes true when Zachary materializes to save her life and teach her of the powers she never knew she possessed. Allied with her first love, and more powerful than any teenage girl ever dreamed, Marissa gains confidence and believes she can do anything. Together, can this improbable duo save Marissa’s family and the world from the demon before it’s too late?

Interview

  1. What inspired you to write The Beckoning?

    • I have always been interested in two things, history and the paranormal. In college I’ve written two theses on slavery in the American South. Because of that I have always been interested in old antebellum mansions and ghosts and demons. The Beckoning is a natural marriage of the two.

  2. When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

    • I believe that I’ve always wanted to be a writer. I started relatively late in life when it comes to writing fiction perhaps because I wasn’t brave enough. I am happy that I have conquered my fears and started to write fiction. I don’t plan on stopping any time soon.

  3. What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

    • Because I am dyslexic I didn’t finish reading my first full-length book until I was in the fifth grade. It was a history book on the story of submarines. I’ve been reading ever since.

  4. What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

    • I don’t believe that I love any one particular genre over the other. To be a good writer, one should expose his or herself to various different styles and subjects. That being said, I do like to legal thrillers like Grisham, paranormals like Stephen King or history books.

  5. What is your favorite book?

    • That would be a tough one. The Client by John Grisham sticks out in my mind, as does Pet Cemetery by Stephen King and Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee by Dee Brown.

  6. You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

    • Out of all of them, I think that Stephen King is my all time favorite. Anyone who can make me sleep with the lights on and still look forward to picking up his book the next night has to get my vote.

  7. If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

    • Being that I teach Native American History and have written the textbook that I now use in my class, I would have to go back to the time of the Mississippian empire of around 1100 AD that existed around St. Louis. I would love to see their pyramids in all their grandeur.

  8. When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

    • Getting the story out is the easy part for me. Once I get the story in my mind, it continually pecks away at my brain until I get it out. It is a relief to get it out and on paper. It is the editing of the story that is more difficult. Thank goodness for my editor, Neal Hock. He is worth every penny.

  9. Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

    • I have a dog named Roscoe who was my inspiration for Max in The Beckoning. He is a true protector of the family and never lets an opportunity to jump up and hug me every time I get near the stairs go by.

  10. What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?

    • I have an extreme weakness for two foods. I make a baked macaroni and cheese from smoked Gouda and aged cheddar that I can’t resist. I also love almost every flavor of ice cream.

  11. Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

    • Be strong. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do it and don’t listen to agents. The book The Help was rejected 60 times. That being said, always believe in yourself and never stop writing.

Why did I choose Outside - a post-apocalyptic novel for this weeks Wishlist Wednesday?

The future is divided by Perimeters: high-security gated communities. Riley is very lucky that she was born on the inside of the fence and not the outside. But when someone breaks through and murders her little sister, Riley goes outside the fence to find the person who killed her sister.
