The Challenge between Ellie Ryan and Vince Corelli had been tough. It was both mentally and physically exhausting, not to mention overloaded with sexual tension. In the end, Ellie exited victorious as the test pilot of the brand new XH8 helicopter, Vince was offered a high paying private sector job, and they finally allow themselves one night of passion before going their separate ways.
Months later, Ellie’s crew has been murdered and the prototype helicopter she was piloting hijacked. All evidence leads to her involvement in a deadly terrorist game. Her only hope of survival is to open herself up and accept help, if it arrives in time.
Vince, a Resolutions operative, is sent to retrieve the XH8 from Colombia and deal with the woman the U.S. military believes to be behind the plot to kill hundreds of thousands of Americans, but will he be able to overcome his trust issues in time to prove Ellie’s innocence?

Excerpt

“Well, flyboy, looks like the best man won The Challenge.” Chief Ellie Ryan raised her bottle of beer. The rest of the men gathered around a table at The Cockpit bar, followed suit.
“Except the best man in this instance is a woman.” Vince Corelli clinked his longneck against hers and noted for the one-millionth time what a damn fine-looking woman sat next to him. How often did he get to meet the real deal…an awesome pilot and a man’s wet dream rolled into one? After six months of working side by side, Vince needed to take his Ellie-inspired, constant hard-on and hit the road.
“Hey man, how’s it feel to be bested by a woman?” Goose, her copilot, teased. “Gotta be rough on the ego.”
“Nah, real men don’t have inflated egos.” Vince wiggled his bottle, signaling the waitress to bring another round.
“Says the man with the two-hundred megawatt ego.” She wrapped her lips around the rim of her bottle. What Vince wouldn’t give to have those lips wrapped around his cock. “I’m still trying to figure out how you even found a helmet large enough to fit your over-sized noggin.”
Samuels slapped his beer onto the table. “Fuck the helmet. I want to know where the major general found a cockpit big enough for his head.”
Another circle of laughter surrounded him. “You do know men with big egos have cocks to match.”
“Wait a second. Didn’t you just tell me and the guys you didn’t have an ego?” Her eyes swam with laughter, her excitement and happiness contagious.
Wilson stood and made a few obscene gestures with his pelvis. “Ryan’s got you there, man.”
The new tray of beers arrived, and Vince rose and held his bottle out. “Seriously. I want to wish Ryan the best in her new position as pilot of the XH8 prototype. You kicked my flying ass out there, and no one deserves the honor more than you, Chief.” He clinked his bottle to hers. “Bottoms up.”
The rest of the crew tapped their bottles together and downed their brews. The group’s trash-
talk grew loud and, for the most part, obnoxious, but damn if he wasn’t going to miss working with them. Even with the constant boner he carried around her, he’d miss her, too. Hell, he’d miss her the most.
She stood, still clutching her bottle. “Thank you, flyboy, for your kind words. They touched me right here.” She tapped her bottle over her heart. “Even if they were total bullshit.”
More laughing.
“You were neck and neck with me throughout The Challenge. Picking a winner had to have been a toss-up, I’m sure. And unfortunately in the end, the committee went with the better-looking competitor…me.”
“Having my ass beat by a beautiful woman sounds pretty kinky to me, Ryan.” He wiggled his brows at Ellie.
“We all know the pilot with the biggest set of balls won The Challenge.” Wilson raised his bottle. “But I think we’re gonna miss you, Corelli.”
“Like a bad STD,” Sammy added.
The men were full of jokes tonight.

“Thanks, Ryan, and everyone else. Your insults tonight have touched me deeply. I’ve never felt so loved. If I can ever do a favor for any of you, don’t fucking call me. I screen my calls.” He took a swig from his bottle. “What the fuck. I’m gonna block all your numbers.”

Author Info

Teri Riggs was destined to be a writer. As a small girl she didn’t read bedtime stories, she made up her own. Who needed Little Red Riding Hood or The Three Little Pigs when there were so many great tales bouncing around in her head? When she grew up and became a mother to three little girls, she continued the tradition of making up bedtime stories. On the occasions she chose to tell conventional fairytales, Teri usually gave them a bit of tweaking here and there or added a new ending. Her girls loved it.

After her daughters had the nerve to actually grow up and leave home, Teri discovered she had a passion for writing and jumped right in. It came as no surprise she chose to write mysteries and happily-ever-after’s since that’s the genres she loves to read.

Teri lives in Marietta, Georgia with her husband, one of her daughters and two dogs that seem to think they rule the world. And some days Teri thinks maybe they do.

Teri still frequently tells herself stories as she falls asleep. The only difference now is she wakes up the next morning and turns her bedtime stories into books.

Review: Judgement by Norma Hinkens @normahinkens

Judgement
(The Undergrounders, #3)
by Norma Hinkens
Published June 24th 2016
Genre: Dystopia, Science Fiction, Fantasy, Young Adult

The mighty Craniopolis falls, but a darker shadow takes its place.

The shocking revelation that the sovereign leader is alive rocks the survivors. The factions unite, but motives are suspect and mistrust runs deep among former foes. Rumors surface of a murderer at large within the city and Derry’s leadership as head of the new Council is further plagued when the sweeps resume and the Undergrounders are forced to restart the toxic Superconductor. Aided by the mysterious archer, Lou, Derry devises a last-ditch plan to pull off the unthinkable and strike at the heart of the sovereign leader’s regime. But, there’s more at stake than Derry realizes, and the forces she encounters are even more deadly than she imagined.

Locked in a gripping race against time, The Undergrounders’ final stand unleashes a chaos that can only end in death or victory.

Judgement is the third book in The Undergrounders Series, a sci-fi dystopian thriller trilogy with a gritty complex heroine and twists you won’t see coming!

Other Books in the Series:

Embattlement The Undergrounders #2

Immurement (The Undergrounders Book #1)

Goodreads ~ Amazon

My Review:

In Judgement Derry and her friends are back and have finally saved everyone from the Sweepers. They have put Craniopolis out of operation and have stopped the Sweepers from extracting people. They are now all living happily and safe in Shoshane City with the riders, the Undergrounders, the clones and everyone else. Well they believe they are safe until they intercept a message that was meant for Craniopolis. They find out that Craniopolis is not the only place that is creating clones. They learn that they may be other places out there like Craniopolis that is experimenting on people. Derry is now very determined to stop the other outposts before they learn that Craniopolis has been put out of commission and they send more Sweepers their way.

While Derry is getting everyone ready for battle she has a lot more problems on the home front that has her upset but there isn’t much she can do about it but just let it be for the moment. Not only does she have to worry about the Sweepers but she also has to deal with the rogues as well. She thought that maybe she and the rogues were even but she soon learns that with rogues that is not the case. Most of them are only out for number one and will kill if that is what it takes to be number one but they are also some good folks that are rogues and they are also some that just like to play fair. The latter may be just what has saved Derry’s butt on occasion.

Is Derry ready for another fight? Are her and her friends capable of fighting so close on the tail end of their last fight with the Sweepers? Well if they want to live then they had better be. Because once they arrive the sweeping will start all up again if they can’t stop them for good this time or so they hope.

The Sweepers won’t know what has hit them when they meet up with Derry for the first time. Derry is a very strong and willed person for someone so young. She is also a very smart person. But she was taught by the best, Big Ed, an Undergrounder like herself. Yeah ole’ Big Ed finds a campion and maybe a little love like Derry and Sven, Owen and Nikki and like some others too. Yeah even clones can fall in love.

I have really and truly loved following Derry, Jerome, Rummy, Sven, Owen, The Ghost and others on their journeys to stop the Sweepers. I have enjoyed learning of their lives as Undergrounders and the traveled along with them on their stay in the city of Shoshane. I love the world that the Norma Hinkens has created for The Undergrounders. It is unlike anything I have read before. I would definitely recommend The Undergrounders Series to anyone who loves a good story. It will leave you wanting more. I would suggest that you start with the first book in the series Immurement and then go on to the next one Embattlement and then Judgement. Yeah you would need to read them in order so that you will know what is going and you want be confused about anything. The Undergrounders is one of those series you would like to see on the big screen.

Authors:    Deborah Serra & Nancy Serra Greene
Published:  November 6th, 2015
Publisher:   Library Tales Publishing
Genre:  Motherhood

Synopsis:

When sisters, Deborah & Nancy, discovered that motherhood was a temp job they decided to run away from home. After packing up that last kid for college, and facing the sad stillness of their suddenly quiet homes, they decided to leave the country. 2 BROADS ABROAD: MOMS FLY THE COOP is a funny, irreverent, occasionally poignant travel tale of their impulsive road trip around Ireland.

In this witty warm-hearted adventure, they experienced some of Ireland’s quirkier history while sharing universally relatable stories of maniacal school coaches, neurotic neighbors, and tiger moms. Having kicked that empty nest into their rearview mirror, the sisters took off careening down the wrong side of the road, making questionable choices, getting trapped in a medieval tower, sneaking Chinese take-out into a famous cooking school, drinking way too much, and gaining a changed perspective on their lives ahead.

EXCERPT:

“Your youngest is leaving for college? Aw, empty nest?”  Then, sappy eyes followed by a plaintive grin and, “What will you do?”
Before my sister and I decided to run away from home we were bothered by that question.  There was something minimizing about it, minimizing and not completely untrue. Motherhood had been so deceptive, the greatest paradox in life: every single bleary-eyed day felt a month long, and the years went by in an instant. They flashed by like lightning and left a desiccated scorch mark wearing my clothes.  It was disagreeable to imagine what life would be like childless:  there would be the family tree, and there would be the mom who’s the center of the family tree, standing leafless, bare (and it has been a while since I looked good bare). There was some solace as I glanced around me to see my younger sister, Nancy, would be standing there bare as well.  We were embarking on this progeny-shedding calamity simultaneously as both of our youngest daughters, Nicole and Olivia, were leaving for college the same week.
I knew that Nancy hadn’t really focused on it yet.  And then, we met at Fashion Island in Newport Beach near her home to get a birthday gift for our mom. We ran into two of Nancy’s neighbors, Vicki and Susan.
“Nancy,” Vicki asked, “doesn’t Nicole graduate from Corona Del Mar High School this June?”
“Yes,” Nancy said.  “She’s going to the University of Washington.”
“Oh,” Susan lifted her eyebrows, “you must be devastated.”
“What?”  Nancy looked confused.  “No, actually I was happy for her.  She worked really hard. It was her first choice school.”
“But so far away!” Susan added in that annoying singsong tone.
Nancy shifted her feet, a move I knew well as her sister.  It was something she always did when she was being told something she did not like to hear.
“It’s not that far.” Nancy said.
“It’s a plane ride. You need an airplane to see your daughter.” Susan said loudly.
“Yeah.”  Nancy turned to me in an effort to change the subject. “You remember my sister, Deborah?”
“Of course.” Vicki smiled.  And we exchanged hellos.  Vicki seemed normal, but I had an inkling that I might have to slap Susan.
Susan continued on with her one thought. “With your son gone already, and soon Nicole, well, Nancy, I guess you’re all alone now.”
Nancy shifted her feet again. “I’m still married, Susan.”
“Sure.  Sure.  Right.  So that’s better than nothing, huh?”
Nancy and I both froze.  Did she just say that?
“You know,” Vicki tried to cut off Susan, “when Terrie’s youngest left she bought a Chihuahua puppy.  Cutest thing you’ve ever seen.  And the Walkers gave a room to an exchange student from Sweden,” she explained happily.
Nancy nodded. “That sounds like a good plan.”
Susan opened her mouth to speak again and I wasn’t sure whether I should just smack her now and be done with it, or let her continue.  I made the wrong choice.
“Remember Pam Winthrop?” Susan leaned in. “When her son left she started eating a pint of Ben & Jerry’s every day until she put on 60 pounds. Sad, really, tragic. Even her kneecaps were fat.” Then Susan turned to me, “So, Deborah, isn’t your youngest graduating, too?”
“I’m leaving the country,” I said.
Susan cocked her head. “What?”
“I’m leaving the country,” I repeated matter-of-factly.
“So am I,” Nancy said. I looked at her.  I saw the decision in her eyes. “I’m going with Deborah.  We’re taking a long trip together – a sisters trip.”
“You are?” Susan sounded a little thwarted, which Nancy found gratifying.
“Yup, in the planning stages.” Nancy smiled at Susan who was clearly disappointed that we were not miserable as anticipated.  “Nice to see you though, Susan, Vicki.  Got to go. In the middle of booking flights and stuff. So much to do!”
We turned away and strode with purpose toward the door.
I whispered, “Susan’s a real gem.”
“She did me a favor.”
“Yeah?”
“I’ve been so busy I just wasn’t thinking about it.”
“And I haven’t been able to think about anything else,” I said.  “When I’m awake in the middle of the night it runs over and over in my mind.”

Nancy said, “When I heard that crap Susan was dealing, all of a sudden I realized, there’s no way am I plodding into that sunset with fat kneecaps carrying a Chihuahua.”

Excerpt from How to Give Up: How (Exactly) to Let Go and Let God:

I'll 'fess up. I've creeped into a dark closet. I creeped because I didn't want anyone else to know I was in there. I even remained silent and still while my husband called my name. I had had it. My heart—and my brain—were nearly broke. I crawled into the dark out of self-preservation. Truth be told, I wasn't hiding from him. I was hiding from our entire situation if only for a second.
It took only a few minutes, though, for me to realize that hiding out in the closet wasn't the answer. (Though, frankly, it didn't hurt for those few minutes either. We all need to get away and catch our breath from time to time.) As I stood there in the dark, I knew that eventually I would have to return to the worries, to the 24/7 work of parenting a child with special needs, to the awful feeling that my best was never going to be quite enough.
But as I pressed my hot forehead against the cool, textured drywall and listened to my husband call out my name, I realized something else too. I wasn't in this situation alone. There was in fact help, waiting and calling my name right outside—right in the middle of the very mess I was trying to run away from. All I needed to do was respond, open the door and receive it. And—wow!—so it is with God too. All we need do is let go. Give up. And give it to Him. Calm really can be found in the middle of our calamity. We just need to stop shouldering it all ourselves, all alone.
It's incredibly easy to fall into the trap of thinking that our lives would be so much better, we'd be so much more at peace, if only we didn't have so many responsibilities, if things were different or if only there were more hours in the day so that we could fit it all in and finally catch our breath. But it's a trap.
It's a trap because there will always be pressure. There will always be stuff that needs to get done. There will always be less than ideal circumstances to manage. The key is to find—and experience—the calm in the middle of the calamity, right where we are and in the middle of everything we're dealing with. This is simultaneously the puzzle and the prize.
