Blog Tour + #Giveaway: Soul Finder by Jacinta Maree @JacintaMaree6 @XpressoTours

Soul Finder
Jacinta Maree
(The Immortal Gene, #2)
Publication date: September 16th 2016
Genres: Dystopian, New Adult, Supernatural

Since being discovered as Soulless, Nadia has become a target for both terrorist groups and government corporations. Now, her only hope for survival rests in the hands of the man sent out to kill her: Diesel, the Mad Dog terrorist.

Diesel is determined to free himself of the never ending curse of reincarnation and the haunting memories that plague his mind. But when his search leads him to Nadia, a greater desire stills him from taking her life.

Unable to see into Diesel’s cracking mind, Nadia instead puts her faith into his strength, fueled by eleven generations of unmatched rage and insanity. Their tight-rope relationship balances the two between life and death, love and rage, trust and betrayal.

Tension pulls at the hems of their dangerous companionship, and as time runs out all madmen must eventually make their choice.

Book two of the thrilling Immortal Gene series dives deeper into the danger of trusting your heart over your head.

Sequel to:
Soulless

An Interview with Jacinta Maree

What inspired you to write Soul Finder?
Soulless, Soul Finder and Soul Reaper came to me very easily. The whole concept revolves around reincarnation, in this extreme case, reincarnation gone wrong.
The Immortal Gene is a throwback to the immortality provided with the reincarnation plague. I’ve called it a gene as it is something people are born with, or in Nadia’s case, without. The title Soulless was chosen because the main character, Nadia, doesn’t have a soul imprint and lacks any reincarnated memories therefore marking her as not having a soul. In the dictionary, Soulless is described as a lack of human emotion and qualities. It’s a running joke that Nadia, whom is probably the only one capable of human emotion, is the one being called the Soulless.
Soul Finder is chosen because of the developing understanding of herself, Diesel’s returning humanity, and the new character Hiro.
Soul Reaper, as you can probably guess, is the reaping of the souls. What this means could be a lot of different things, and something I don’t want to disclose yet.
When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?
I was very young when I started writing, probably around 6 – 7 years old. It was a strange passion because I had a lot of trouble learning how to spell growing up. It got to the point I needed to see a specialist and my confidence took a hit.
I shied away from showing anyone outside of my family my work. It wasn’t until I was in high school that I thought becoming a novelist was a possibility. By then, spell check was invented anyway so it was easier to correct my work. I never thought I would have accomplished as much as I have, and I consider myself incredibly lucky for the opportunities presented to me. I hope I continue to improve and grow, and maybe even help others find the confidence to follow their writing dreams.
What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?
I think I was roughly 6 – 7 again, and it was probably the reason why I started writing. It was one of those gifts where you can input the child’s name into the story by filling in the blanks. The version I got was a Barbie adventure book, and I loved it so much I had to read more when the book ended. It was a powerful gift, opening up new realities to me.
What genre of books do you enjoy reading?
My favourite are dystopian’s, but I really read anything with a good plot line. I had surprised myself by reading and really enjoying a political drama, so I never turn my nose up on my book.
What is your favorite book?
This is a hard one to answer, as my favourite changes all the time. I know for the longest time Stephen King’s works were always a top fav, then followed by Brent Weeks and now Marie Rutkoski’s series. Nowadays, I enjoy a lot of novels for many different reasons.
You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?
Similarity to my favourite book, my opinion changes. Currently, my favourite author is Marie Rutkoski and her series The Winner’s Curse. It was just her ability to weave her characters, emotions and actions into moving poetry that really got to me. I was never bored, and she as able to build so many layers and depths to her characters, it made me really want to improve myself.
If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?
Hmm… there aren’t many moments in history that makes me think, yeah I would want to go back there, but if I did have to jump into a time travelling machine I would love to go back and visit my parents when they were my age. I would totally try to freak them out too, describe details about them a stranger shouldn’t know. Haha, I’ll probably end up screwing up my own future but oh well.
When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?
It’s only difficult when I don’t have inspiration. It’s not an easy thing to do, it takes a lot of time, determination and persistence to create a novel. But, that being said, it also feels like the most natural thing in the world. I do struggle sometimes, and I think, how on earth have I written five of these already?
I take it one scene at a time, and before you know it, the novel has formed into a living, breathing entity.
Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?
I have a cat and a dog currently, but I am very much a cat person. I used to have two cats, but my 17 year old passed away so I’m down to just the two animals now. If I could, I would love to have three cats.
Their names are Muffin for the dog and Sahara for the cat (Sahara was her name at the cat shelter, so I just kept it.)
What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?
Hmmm…I’m a chocolate fan, so I’m pretty happy to eat chocolate for the rest of my life if I could (and keep my health / teeth). But I like so many other types of food, I just don’t know which one I would ‘die for’. I love Chinese food as my top favourite type of cuisine. Dumplings, peking duck, hor fun (white flat noodles), red bean soup, the list can go on forever.
Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

I think the biggest thing I can say is to join the community. It’s really, really hard out there in the publishing world without friends, so if you’re able to then I suggest attending conventions and networking among your fellow writers, readers and bloggers. Help each other out, and be genuine in your actions toward others too.
We are in this together, it’s important we don’t see other writers as our competitors but as our companions.

Excerpt

As I headed down the hallway to the office, I could hear Claire talking to a client. I glanced at my watch and realized it was our two o’clock appointment. I gave the client a brief nod but didn’t interrupt. When I reached my desk, Hero came over to greet me, and Jerrie raised her head. Once she realized I wasn’t doing anything interesting, she went back to sleep. Both cats were curled up on the love seat that was directly in the path of sunlight streaming through the front windows. It is one of their favorite spots.

I played with Hero for a moment and gave him a treat as I absently listened to Claire try to talk our client out of requesting the advanced search. The woman was elderly, and it was apparent that she didn’t have much money. Even worse, her missing pet was a bird. Hero could search by air scent, but it was very difficult to track something that flew.

“Mrs. Kearns,” Claire said in a soft, caring voice, “it is very hard to find birds. We will be happy to call all the shelters and some local aviaries. Maybe someone found her and turned her in.”

“No, no she won’t go to anyone else. Please, dear, please help me. I’ve had Molly for almost thirty years. I just don’t know what I’d do without her.”

The woman’s voice broke on the end. Claire looked at me. I closed my eyes briefly and nodded. Claire quickly rounded the desk and sat in the chair next to Mrs. Kearns. As she spoke softly with the woman, I gathered Hero’s leash and my backpack. Hero followed me over to them.

“Mrs. Kearns,” I said. “I’m Alex, and this is Hero. Let’s go see if we can find Molly.”

I spent the next two hours searching Mrs. Kearns’ neighborhood for her parrot. In the end, it wasn’t Hero that found the bird but one of the neighborhood kids. They had been out playing in the yard a few houses down, and one of them spotted the brightly colored Macaw in a tree. It took Mrs. Kearns coaxing and a special treat of a juicy apple before the bird consented to fly down, but both the client and the bird were finally corralled.

Once Molly had been returned to her cage, I took her picture for my wall. As Mrs. Kearns thanked me for what seemed like the hundredth time, I gathered my things and prepared to leave.

“Wait, dear.” Mrs. Kearns hurried over to the table and began digging through her purse. For an older woman, she moved fast. She had told me she just turned eighty. I thought about introducing her to Harvey. I had a feeling the two of them might get along.

“Mrs. Kearns…”

“Just a moment, dear,” she said. She found her wallet and pulled out some bills. She tapped them together and turned back to me. Head high, she held them out to me. “I know your fee is two hundred dollars. This is $172. It’s all I have at the moment, but I will get you the rest. You have my word.”

My heart broke a little at those words. I could tell Mrs. Kearns lived on a fixed income. Her house was clean and orderly, but the furniture was old and the outside could use a paint job. There was no doubt in my mind that money was all she had. I had a feeling it was all she had left for the entire month, and it was only the eighth.

My first instinct was to refuse, but I changed my mind when I looked in her eyes. She was both terrified that I would accept the money and terrified that I wouldn’t. I took the money from her hand, plucked a twenty from the stack, and shoved the rest back to her.

“We have an installment plan, Mrs. Kearns. Ten percent down,” I said, holding up the twenty, “and equal monthly payments until the balance is cleared.”

Relief flooded her face for just a moment. I quickly looked away, called for Hero, and headed for the door. Too many bad memories came back to me when I thought about worrying if I had enough money to eat. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.

“You take care of Molly, Mrs. Kearns.”

“Thank you, dear.” I heard her whisper as I closed the door behind us.

An Excerpt from The Crush:

A pang of empathy hit him. “Don’t worry, Buttercup.” He crooked a knuckle under her chin. “Just wait till I get finished with this place. . . .”

That one square inch of skin fused them together like a magnet. His feet stepped closer of their own accord until the toes of his boots bumped hers.

Her lips relaxed and parted. He scrutinized every inch of her face, seeking fault . . . justification to quell his growing desire. It was true. Junie wasn’t a conventional beauty. Her features were a tad too strong, and freckles from working outside sprinkled her nose. But with no makeup diverting attention from them, her irises shone like sapphires. Even under the glaring summer sun, her naked skin was poreless, her cheeks downy as peach fuzz. She was like an organic fruit, imperfect on the surface but better for you in the ways that counted.

His body stiffened with lust. But this was no run-of-the-mill at- traction. An undercurrent of danger ran through it. His heart pounded like it did the moment his CO announced, “Operation mobile” unexpectedly and he knew all of his skills were about to be tested to the limit. At moments like that—when a man was never closer to death—he never felt more alive.

His fingers spread to cup her jaw possessively. He tipped her head back, sending her Ducks cap tumbling backward onto to the ground. Slowly, slowly his head descended until only inches sepa- rated their lips. His own jaw tightened with the effort of restraint. It took every ounce of self-control he had not to throw caution to the wind, rip that baggy white suit right off, and lay her down in the mid- dle of the vineyard in broad daylight. If she were any other woman . . .

"Jo Marie, do you remember the night we were laying in the hammock? Our hammock? And I told you that no matter what happened in the future, I would love you for the rest of my life?"

I bit down on the inside of my cheek. Of course I remembered. How could I ever forget? Those words were emblazoned in my mind the day he spoke them, chronicled as one of the best and worst days of my life. "I remember," my lips shared on a broken whisper.

His eyes drifted back and locked on mine. His nostrils flared slightly as he persuasively whispered his response back to me, "I wasn't lying."

Amelia is a wife, a mother and a hopeless romantic. She writes the kind of books she loves to read.
