Bookish Brit Adam Gibson is one wonky heartbeat away from a fatal arrhythmia. But staying alive requires Adam to become keenly focused on both his pulse and the many different daily medications he must take in exactly the right dosages. Adam's torn between wanting to live and knowing that someone else must die in order for him to do so. He needs a new heart.

The pressure is getting to him. Adam stops talking to his friends back home, refuses to meet kids at his new school, and shuts his parents out entirely. His days are spent wondering if can cope with having a dead man's heart beating inside his chest, or if he should surrender to the thoughts of suicide swirling around in his head.

And then a donor is found…

Outspoken artist Darby Fox rarely lets anything stand in her way of achieving her goals . Whether it’s painting, ignoring her homework (dyslexia makes a mess out of words anyway), kissing a hot boy she doesn't even know, or taking the head cheerleader down a peg , no one has ever accused Darby of being a shy. She also happens to be the twin sister to a perfect brother with good looks, good grades, manners, and the approval of their parents - something Darby has never had.

Darby's always had bad timing . She picks the worst time to argue with her brother Daniel. In a car with bald tires, on an icy road in the freezing cold, the unthinkable happens. In a split-second, everything changes forever.

ADAM:

“Wait a minute.” Mum grabs her purse from the back seat. She frets with a loose string on the strap.
My fingers grip the door handle. “Mum?”
After sucking in a deep breath, she opens the clasp. Slowly, she pulls out a pill bottle.
“What’s that?”
She reads the label. “Ziprasidone. Doctor Shaw prescribed this for you last week. She said I’d know the right time to talk to you about it.”
My throat goes dry. Changing meds had been part of Shaw’s plan all along. She must think I’m getting worse. “Why didn’t she say anything to me?”
“She doesn’t want to give the impression of being a pill pusher. You are doing therapy and she doesn’t want you to associate medication as the go-to solution for everything. She said it clouded the therapeutic relationship.”
My eyes cross at the psychobabble. “Hiding things from me isn’t okay.”
Mum tips her head to the side. “She said you might challenge this.”
“She gave you control over medications I put in my body.” Inside, I’m shaking. I clench my fists.
Mum uncaps the bottle and shakes a tablet into her palm. “We’re all on the same team, Adam. This is supposed to work with your anti-depressant to make it more effective. Doctor Shaw said it will also help keep you calm so your heart won’t be as stressed. You’ve been acting more upset lately and after what happened in the city…”
“More upset?” My voice cracks, something it hasn’t done since I hit puberty.
“Adam, you don’t do anything, talk to anyone, or have any fun. You’ve cut off everyone from home, and—”
“My heart is dying,” I interrupt.
“You’re still alive.”
“For how long?” I mumble.
Mum’s eye twitches. “This isn’t the time to give up.”
I cross my arms and squint at the dashboard. “I’m not taking any more pills.”
Mum plucks her water bottle from the center console. “And I’m not taking no for an answer.”

Author Interview:
What inspired you to write UNDER MY SKIN?
Most of my stories start with a character. In the case of UNDER MY SKIN, two characters started yammering at me simultaneously. Adam Gibson gently tapped me on the shoulder and, in his soft-spoken, proper English way, shared his fears about living life on the edge of death. He’d been through a lot—moving from the UK to upstate New York to be near a highly respected cardiothoracic surgeon/heart transplant specialist, leaving his friends behind, coming to grips with the idea that someone has to die for him to get a heart, and would getting a new heart mean he’d turn into Frankenstein’s monster. Darby Fox, on the other hand, burst onto the scene all frenetic energy and snark. She prefers acting on instinct—if it feels good, do it—especially if it involves art, painting, dancing, and taking down stuck-up cheerleaders a peg or two, all while struggling to earn praise from her parents (despite crappy grades from dyslexia) even though they save all of it for her ultra-perfect twin brother.
When Adam and Darby meet, they couldn’t be more opposite. And like Darby would prefer, I wanted to see what happened in the contrast. It turns out to be both scary and beautiful.

When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?
I’ve always been a reader, but didn’t catch the writing bug until my last year of residency. Everyone needs a creative outlet of some sort, and it turned out writing became mine. That was about seven years ago, give or take a few months, and I haven’t looked back since. Writing has been one of the most rewarding and challenging endeavors I’ve taken on.

What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?
I remember watching my mom and her father enjoy reading and I begged Mom to teach me how to read when I was around three or four. I’d get so excited whenever I saw a book. It just makes me happy.

What genre of books do you enjoy reading?
I’m a sci-fi/fantasy girl at heart. I enjoy magic, paranormal, horror, vampires, witches, space operas, you name it. I will read contemporary stories, too, as long as the characters are strong and compelling. Also, anything with a psychological spin will attract my attention. UNDER MY SKIN is my first contemporary work, and it does have lots of strong psychological elements, including depression, suicide, dyslexia, grief, loss, and anxiety.

What is your favorite book?
There’s no way I can pick a favorite book. BUT, if you twist my arm, I’ll say The Razor’s Edge by Somerset Maugham is a favorite. It even makes a cameo in UNDER MY SKIN. Like Adam, I ended up identifying with the main character in The Razor’s Edge when I read it. He struggled to follow mainstream convention and instead struck out on his own to find his own path in life.

You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?
Again, a difficult question to answer because I like different authors for different reasons. JK Rowling is spectacular at world building and carrying it through several books in a series. Maggie Stiefvater creates such compelling characters that they jump off the page. Her scenery and imagery is so solid that I feel transported to another place. The same goes for George Orwell, Orson Scott Card, Mary Doria Russell, Clive Barker, and Andrew Smith, to name a few.

If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?
I have thought about this over the years, and quite honestly, I don’t think I’d like to travel back in time. Sure, it’d be interesting to visit the pyramids while they were being built, or to marvel at the construction of Stonehenge. But I’m quite happy here in my own time. Gotta say, I am spoiled by modern conveniences like running water, electricity, and well, as a woman, I get more freedoms than those who came before me had.

When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?
This really depends on the story, and sometimes the scene. I grapple with some aspects and other things flow freely. Writing came a lot easier in my early days; now that I’ve learned a lot more, I am so much more careful what I choose to say as I draft a story. This has slowed me down a LOT. But, once I set my mind to it, the words come.

Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?
I have five cats. Yes, that’s too many. They are all special fur babies. They are adopted from the shelter. I love them all. ;)

What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?
I like all food. I think I was born with a sweet tooth, so I tend to choose things like ice cream and frosting as favorites, but I also like mac and cheese, nachos, sushi (thanks to my co-workers!), Indian, spaghetti, pizza…I have to interrupt myself here. About three and a half years ago, I joined Weight Watchers and completely overhauled my eating habits. Using the program, I lost 100 pounds. It has changed my eating preferences as well. I love veggies, fruits, hummus, and most of what I eat consists of those plus lean meats and greek yogurt. It’s rare that I’ll eat anything fried. I just can’t tolerate it anymore.

Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

KEEP WRITING. There’s a lot of rejection to face as a writer. There’s a lot of people willing to give advice and critiques. It can get overwhelming. It’s important to listen to what people offer, but also important to remember what got you writing in the first place and that once you develop a sense of “the rules” you’ll know when to follow them and when to break them.

What if everyone just stopped caring? What sort of world would we create for future generations?

Letha and Nathan were best friends just as were their mothers before them. Soon, however, two dictators overthrow the city, take the children captive, kill the opposing parents and then brainwash, train, and sculpt these children into soldiers. At first, Letha rejects the new life she leads, staying strong only to protect those younger than her. She is then given the ultimate task: kill Nathan; If she does not, everyone, including herself, will die.

In a world where no one cares, Letha struggles against herself to do the right thing. Ultimately, she has to make a choice, save herself or drown in the codependency of one young boy who has become brainwashed and hardened into the dictator’s web. No matter what choice she makes, she will have to lose someone that she loves.

My Review:

Letha and Nathan were best friends as were their mothers until the day two people attacked their city and took the children captive and then killed their parents right in front of their very own eyes. They did this to gain control of them. They were separated into two groups and were then made enemies. All the little kids were trained to be killers and sent on missions to kill. If they did not do what they were told by their leader then they would die as well as everyone on their team.

Letha and Nathan became enemies because of these two people not because of the way they felt about each other. They were trained and brain washed into believing what they were told not to mention threatened. The thing is it wasn’t a threat at all it was a promise which all always came true. Letha didn’t want to kill Nathan but did he want to kill her? Would he kill her if given the opportunity? Would Letha kill Nathan if or when it  the opportunity is put in her face literally? Or does Letha have plans of her own? How will Letha save herself, her friends and everyone else? Can she save everyone including herself?

No one cares about anyone or anything anymore well except killing someone and surviving. Will the world ever care again? Will they start caring about each other like they did before? Can they ever go back to what they once had?

I loved reading INSIDE the Wall not that I liked seeing people get killed or seeing kids watch their parents die or seeing kids being brain washed and trained to kill but the world that the author created was amazing. INSIDE the Wall will grab you from the first page and won’t let go until you have flipped that last page and leaves you wanting to know more. Wanting to more as to what happens to Letha and the rest of her friends and what it is like for them in their new world. I can’t wait for the next book
OUTSIDE the Wall.

Virtual Book Tour + #Giveaway: Eden: The Eighth Day by Sally Mitchell @sallymitchell17 @GoddessFish

Eden: The Eighth Day
by Sally Mitchell
GENRE: Dystopian fantasy

BLURB:

Welcome to Mendacia; The city of lies. Saved from a divine apocalypse, its citizens now starve. They are trapped beneath a fire-lit sky and surrounded by a molten river, all to pay for the sins of their ancestors.

The gods cursed the original generation with eternal life so that their skin would rot and their pain would always remind them of their own horrific crimes.

These demons now serve the tyrant emperor, Malum Dolus who uses them to terrorise the citizens, all in the name of maintaining order.

One woman, Vita Dulcas has had enough of his evil ways, but what could she possibly do to help the citizens? They love Malum and hate her, suspecting her of witchcraft after her survival of deadly snake bites. All she can do is stay invisible.

That is until she finds herself backed into a corner and all she can do is fight. Suddenly, she has more power than she could have ever imagined and it becomes clear she is Mendacia’s last hope.

If only she could make the citizens see the truth.

Eden: The Eighth Day will be $0.99 during the tour.

EXCERPT:

‘But then he turned. Vita jumped with the motion, praying she didn’t look as hopeless as she felt, but as his head turned, his eyed skimmed past the lamb and landed on her own, searing into them as if nothing had ever changed. The darkness behind those beautiful eyes was a harsh reminder now though. A reminder of the awful secret they shared. She remembered looking up lovingly into those eyes - how wrong she had been. How dangerous he truly was. The ignorance of vanity, she thought.’

‘One by one, more of the citizens scaled the walls, marching a slow and silent trail through the remains of the battle, each to pay their own respects to the man who had taken on the demons and given them the hope of freedom.
With a cough, Empress Vesta began to speak from the balcony. ‘This has been a truly terrible day,’ she said. ‘One which will, I’m sure, weigh on our minds and hearts for some time to come. But, I decree that this man deserves a respectable death. Who will carry his body to the palace?’

Nico’s hand shot in the air, his other clasped on his chest. ‘I will.’

‘And me,’ said Kayin, pulling himself to his feet.

‘Me too,’ said the Survivor.

‘Yes,’ said another citizen.

‘Aye,’ said Domine Agil from behind Vesta.

She gazed down to see the sea of her citizens nodding and raising their hands, all eager to pay the man his final respects. She watched her son, the Survivor and Nico haul Theo’s body into the air. Another citizen helped to support his leg and the four of them began a slow exit from the arena, the brave sinner above their shoulders.’

‘Vita let the curtain drop behind her and walked confidently onto the balcony. She held her hands behind her back and stopped in the centre, standing silently for a moment to survey the faces below her. Some, she had seen before, others were strangers. Family men, drunkards, men of high and low standing, young boys and even arthritic old men, all here in an attempt to buy her and take her freedom.

She could feel her heart quickening and for a moment wondered what she was doing. She couldn’t see the Bilo brothers, which gave her cause for relief.  A whistle echoed around the yard, followed by an eruption of laughter from the group of her potential husbands. She remained still, letting the sounds wash over her.

‘Just come to give us a taster ‘av yer love?’ She gazed down at the toothless source of torment and waited patiently for the ensuing laughter to die down.

‘Gentlemen,’ she began to speak slowly. ‘I stand before you today with faith. Faith in the goodness in each of you. I see many different faces below me. I see men I have known and respected, hardworking men, family men and loyal men. I see long standing friends of my father, people who I used to feel protected by. I see people who, like me, have suffered in this land. And I wonder if it is fear that makes such good men gather here today? You label me a witch, but you can see my flesh is just as vulnerable as yours. If I am cut I will bleed. I am not the one to fear.’

‘The sound of her mother’s dying scream echoed through Vita’s mind and everything stopped. Time seemed not to exist and with pure clarity only one thought surfaced: they must die. She barely felt the tension of the rusted chain as her wrists snapped the metal, with enough force to send her body backwards.

She watched as the pole splintered clean in two with the impact of the flail, right where her head would have been. The demon panicked and pulled the flail free, bringing it down again towards her. She couldn’t move fast enough this time and her hands came up, palms forward to protect her skull. She waited for the impact.

A few seconds passed and she heard a confused grunt. She dared to open an eye and stared, stunned. Her hands were emitting a sort of white/blue light, bright enough to light up the entire room. She gazed in wonder at the flail which had stopped mere millimetres from her palms and was floating calmly in circles. The demon pulled the weapon, but somehow his efforts were hopeless. The flail was stuck fast. She reached out with lightning reactions, grabbing it from the demon’s rotten hands and she could feel the centuries of cruelty the instrument had yielded. The light vanished, leaving only the darkness once more.’

Author Interview:

What inspired you to write Eden: The Eighth Day?

The Eden Saga began as a one off novel that took on a life of its own once I started writing. Initially I was inspired by my interest in astrology as a ‘write what you know’ concept, although the end result is something far removed from that initial concept.

When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

I have always loved writing from a young age. I was always writing poetry and short stories in my spare time and when I got a bit older I began writing in to newspapers and magazines, however it was only after becoming a single parent in 2011 that I decided I wanted to make a career out of it.

My little boy is my life and I realized that continuing my planned career in psychology was no longer an option if I wanted to be around for him as much as possible. I was lucky enough to start a small domestic business from home which enabled me that time, but I always wanted something more that would satisfy my creative side. That’s when I decided that writing was the right path for me.

What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

My mum used to read to me every night from being a baby so it has always been part of my life and something which I have never grown out of. My reading habits have evolved with circumstance though. The nature of my domestic business means a lot of monotonous and repetitive work so I have taken to listening to audiobooks while I work which helps me pass the time.

What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

I’m a huge fantasy fan. To me, reading is about escaping reality and you can’t get much father from reality than a good fantasy novel or series of novels. I love series as they help you to live in a world for much longer.

What is your favorite book?

My favourite book is Pride and Prejudice. Far away from a fantasy novel but such a classic. It’s one of the only books I’ve read over and over.

You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

I think George RR Martin is a genius. He has created such a complex world in such a well-structured and relatively easy to follow story. I would love to create something that masterful.

If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

Ha ha, I’d travel back to the time of the dinosaurs. My little boy is obsessed with them and I’d love to be able to take some pictures for him. I’ve also learned so much about them through his interest that I have become pretty hooked myself too.

When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

Writing is hard work, especially for someone as disorganized as me, but my poor organization skills mean I am constantly jumping back and forth to different parts of the story, which helps me to overcome writers block and keeps me engaged.

Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

I have a cat and a dog and for the time being a jam jar filled with tadpoles for my little man’s benefit.

What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?

I love a good Chinese. I always order lemon chicken as it is just delicious.

Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Stick at it, regardless of other people’s opinions. You will be rejected from agents, you will receive some negative feedback from other authors and you will have moments when you wish to tear your hair out and throw the entire manuscript in the bin, but persevere. Every single author experiences this and even the greats like Stephen King speak of these trials in the beginning, but if you love writing then keep on doing it because only you can create your story and it would be a real tragedy for society to miss out on something brilliant. Try to stay positive and take what you can from constructive feedback to improve your writing and eventually you will get there.

AUTHOR BIO:

I was brought up in a small country village in North Yorkshire, UK. I had always been brought up to work hard and to push myself, skills which came in useful for writing the Eighth Day. I suppose it also helped that I’ve always been a huge bookworm with a love of all things fantasy and all things romance. Pride and Prejudice is my all-time favourite.

Granted those genres are miles apart but I find something incredibly romantic about escaping to a world that has been lovingly created by an author. I enjoy trying to connect with them through their imagination, wondering where they were and what they were doing when they developed such magical worlds.

Writing my own novel was the best experience I’ve ever had career wise, and it makes the struggles I have faced in my past careers all worth the while.

After losing my career as a nurse following a car accident, I began a promising psychology career, even winning an award for my undergraduate degree. However, I became a single parent three years ago and sacrificed another dream to set up a laundry and ironing business, which enabled me to be at home with my son.

Despite many commitments, a further relationship breakdown and 3 family bereavements, I was determined to develop a rewarding career and make my little man proud.

That’s when I decided to begin a writing career and I developed the Eden Saga. Such a path enabled me to stay at home and give him all the extra support he needed whilst also having something for myself.

I’m now the happiest I’ve ever been, I’m closer to my son than ever and I’ve finally released my novel as an e-book which is available on all major platforms.

EXCERPT:

He’s a stripper. His mouth could be carrying a sexually transmitted disease.”

The women giggled and guffawed.

“That couldn’t be it,” Jazz persisted. “You’re a dog. You probably lick your own butt after a good run through the woods.”

She had a point. Sort of. I mean, I don’t really lick myself...my wolf, however.... Well, I try not to think about it.

“Aren’t dog’s mouths cleaner than a human’s?” Andi asked with her typical naivety. It’s one of her charms.

“That’s a myth,” Amelia informed us all.

“And also, I’m not a dog,” I added, in case anybody cared.

“Whatever,” Lillian retorted with a dismissive wave of her hand. “Get back to the point. What’s wrong with Mr. Yummy over there?”

I gave a shrug. “Nothing’s really wrong with him.”

“You got that right,” Andi agreed, her eyes straying Yummy’s way again.

“But he’s too...”

Her eyes jerked back to me expectantly. The whole party watched me, waiting with baited breath. Well...with bad breath, honestly.

“Human,” I finished. “He’s just too human.”

Cover Reveal + #Giveaway: Moms On Missions (Mommageddon Series #1) By Jess Molly Brown @jmollyfanfic @starange13

 Title: Moms On Missions
Series: Mommageddon Series #1
By: Jess Molly Brown
Publication Date: May, 2016
Genre: Contemporary/Humor Women's Fiction

Are you interested in reviewing/joining the blog tour?

Artist Vince Russo wants to advance his career but his devout mother, Diana, wants grandchildren. Vince lives in Niagara Falls, the Romance Capital of the World, and he doesn’t even date!

Diana joins the Moms on Missions (“MOM”), who strive to better the lives of their clients’ kids. MOM installs Vince’s fantasy girl upstairs in the duplex where he lives.

Their pick for Vince is sick of dancing to her mother’s tune, so she certainly won’t admit she finds her sensitive, playful neighbour sexy. However, she’d love to make him her pseudo-boyfriend to get MOM off her back.

Will these young rebels come together organically, or is there no hope for their moms?

“Fuck you!” Drum Boy slams Mrs. P.'s door in his superintendent’s face.

Vince stares open-mouthed at the door in front of him, then turns on the landing to find Paeng at the foot of the stairs, dressed for bed, with no glasses. Steaming, Vince tromps back down the stairs, in time to hear the drumming start again. “What a nerve this guy's got! Little shit.” Now Drum Boy is singing, too. Badly. Vince stops, wondering whether to turn around and march back up there to rattle his teeth.

Instead, he stomps back into his unit, Paeng at his back, and calls Damon.

“Vince, hey, how’s it hangin’?” Damon asks cheerfully. “Want to hit The Hill for a few beers? I’m dying to get out for a bit.”

“No. Do you hear this?” Vince holds up his phone to the ceiling, hoping it picks up the noise. Boom boom chuck budda boom boom chuck budda “I don’t need a frickin’ girlfriend!” Boom boom chuck budda boom boom chuck . . . “My neighbour is an asshole!”

“What is that?” Damon asks stupidly.

“It's your new tenant,” Vince growls. “He drums twenty-four seven. I have explained this to you, Damon. Twice.
The last time Paeng and I had two minutes’ peace was the day before he moved in. I am losing it, man. I’m going to go postal soon. If I do, you are going to have to explain why to our mothers, and you are going to have to comfort them both while I’m getting corn-holed in Kingston Pen for capping the little bastard, capisce?”

“Whoa-ho-ho, there Vince! Did you say there's a guy living up there? It was supposed to be Mrs. Maggione’s friend Gloria’s daughter, Mary. She’s gor—” Damon checks himself, and Vince scowls. “Um, I mean uh . . . Trudy?” he calls to his wife. “Get me another beer!”

Vince counts to ten. “Did Moms on Missions set this up?” There is silence for a couple beats. From Damon, not Drum Boy. The noise from above is as obnoxious as ever.

Damon sighs. “Yeah, you know it. I didn't even meet the Chiclet.”

“No, no, it’s a guy! And the name on the mailbox says D. Darren, not M. diGiordano. Why didn’t you come to check out the tenant?”

“My mother wouldn't put a crackhead in there, ya know?”

“And a drummer makes a better tenant because . . .”
