Author Interview:

1.What inspired you to write Polaris?

A few years ago, while flipping through a Christmas card catalog. I came across a photo of an old country farmhouse with a snowy background. On the card there were kids playing outside and a horse and carriage in the background, all decorated for Christmas. I didn’t give it much thought at first and continued flipping through the catalog, but something made me flip back and look at it again. This time, in my mind, I saw the same farm house, but the kids, horse, and carriage were gone as were the Christmas decorations. In its place was crisp black sky, with the ground heavily covered in snow, and one young teen boy walking toward this house in the snow, as a meteor streaked through the sky. I stared at that one picture for the longest time and knew it was the opening for Polaris. This, along with my love for conspiracy theories and planets gave me the inspiration to write the story.

2. When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

I’ve been making up stories since I was old enough to read. I’d tell my older sister a new storyline every night before we went to sleep. Most of them were retellings of stories I’d read and I’d always have some sort of weird twist in it.

3. What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

I’ve always loved to read.  In elementary school, I would always get the books that were for the older kids. I was a fast reader and by the time I was in the 3rd grade, I would just pick out the thickest book they had and read it. One in particular was in the 5th grade, I read All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot and fell in love. I loved the characters. There are so many that I loved.

4. What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

I love anything funny or quirky. I go through phases of what I like.

5. What is your favorite book?

That’s a hard question. Since I’m a children’s author I will name a few of  my favorite children’s books.  The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle, Chronicles of Narnia, The Hobbit, and I grew up on all the Judy Blume books, love them!

6. You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

Just like my favorite books, my favorite authors change. However, right now I love Trenton Lee Stewart. His books are fun and quirky.

7. If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

Washington, D.C., August 28th, 1963 to hear Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech in person. I get chills just watching it via video, I can’t imagine what it was like to be there.

8. When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

The creating part is easy. The editing is the difficult part.

9. Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

I have a Shiranian. He’s a Shih Tzu/Pomeranian mix named Manny.

10. What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?

Crab legs and spaghetti, but not together J

11. Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Keep writing! Don’t give up! Stay away from the naysayers. Don’t follow trends. Write what you want no matter how quirky it is. Tell the story you want to tell. The story will find its audience. When you get rejections, have some chocolate, watch some HGTV, then print out the rejections and turn them into pieces of origami art!

Beth Bowland, a native Ohioan, has always enjoyed reading and creating stories of her own. As a child she devoured every book she could get her hands on and spent numerous hours at the library each week. She loves writing stories for tweens and young teens and her characters are often described as quirky and fun, but always relatable. When she’s not writing, she loves watching HGTV. She has one daughter and resides in Arlington, Texas with her husband, Phillip.

Book Tour + #Giveaway: BENEATH THE VOID by Elisa Dane @ElisaDane @SwoonRomance

BENEATH THE VOID
by Elisa Dane

Sadie Reynolds is drowning.

Months have passed since Ian Daniels and Newton Daily opened fire at Atwood High school, killing dozens of students before turning the guns on themselves.

Determined to pay tribute to her fallen classmates and teachers, Sadie’s thrown herself into the memorial project at the newly rebuilt school. But it’s not enough. Horrific dreams of the shooting intertwined with memories of the night her mother was murdered keep her up at night and haunt her during the day.

The constant stream of hate raining down on her from faceless social media trolls only make matters worse. Her boyfriend, Hayden brings the only source of relief when he sneaks in to sleep next to her on nights her dad is at work.

Desperate for normalcy, Sadie fills every waking moment of her day with anything to take her mind off her pain. If she’s exhausted, she’ll be too tired to acknowledge the new threat gunning for her.

BENEATH the VOID is book 2 in Elisa Dane's Fighting Chance series, a hard-hitting and unapologetically raw look at teen violence in schools and the aftermath of learning to pick up the pieces and heal.

Excerpt:

The smell hit me every time. Stony Glen smelled just like a hospital. Antiseptic and a little bit sickly. It made my stomach sour and my heart race. For as pretty and picturesque as the outside of the facility was, the inside was clinical and cold. I couldn’t wait for Jenna to get healthy and get out.
They hit me every time I walked into the building: flashbacks, from the shooting, from the night my mom died. My chest tightened, my throat felt like it was closing, and a cold sweat broke out over my skin as I struggled to draw breath. My hands went numb and my heart hammered against my ribs as I remember the feel of Doug Kingman’s body laying on top of mine after Ian and Newton shot him. The weight of his body had smothered me. Just like the gruesome memory of his blown off skull smothered me now.
I choked for air, and Hayden, bless his heart, tugged me over to the seating area nearby and sat me down. This seemed to be our ritual every time we came to visit Jenna. I broke down. I gathered myself enough to visit my friend, and then I went home and broke down again. The cycle sucked and I needed to break it.
Once I’d managed to calm myself, we went through the usual routine of signing in and getting visitor badges. I was busy clipping mine to the edge of my zip up when Dawnna, one of Jenna’s nurses stopped me in the hallway. Her expression was not at all encouraging. She looked downright grim.
“I’m glad you’re here today, sweetie. Jenna could use a little dose of sunlight right about now.”
I narrowed my brows in confusion, but said nothing. I wouldn’t consider myself anyone’s sunlight. A quiet source of support? Maybe.
Dawnna shifted on her feet, her blond hair brushing against the collar of her baby blue scrubs. “She started restricting her eating again, so Dr. Palmer made good on his promise.”
I sucked in a quick breath and grimaced. “They gave her a feeding tube?” I wanted to be sick, wanted to sink down onto the floor and melt into the tile. Any hope I had for Jenna getting out of this place in the near future swirled down the drain the moment Dawnna nodded her affirmation.
Sick. My best friend was sick and she wasn’t getting any better. The hollow ache in my chest doubled in size and intensity, and the narrow hallway walls suddenly felt as though they were closing in on me. I closed my eyes and sucked in a slow, deep breath. It was happening again. The panic was returning.
“Are you okay, Sadie?” Dawnna’s voice was filled with concern.
Hayden placed a hand on my shoulder and leaned in close. “Breathe, baby. Just breathe.”
I could feel Dawnna staring at me, but I ignored the sensation and focused on readjusting my armor. Keeping my emotions on lockdown was the only way I was able to cope, so I squashed my feelings down and told myself that none of this was real. I was living in a dream world. A world I’d eventually wake up from.

My Review:

A Curse Books Trilogy Box Set (Books 1-3)

The Thousand Year Curse

Ryder learns that a curse was placed on her a long time ago and that it also involves Ollie and Ari as well. Hades put a curse on her and she is very tired of it and wants to go to visit him to ask him to remove the curse. But Ollie tells her no she cannot go visit Hades it is too dangerous.

The Curse of Betrayal

We don’t get to see Ollie much in The Curse of Betrayal but Ari is there. He is one of Ryder’s teachers so we get to see a little action in the halls and stairwells at times. Ryder doesn’t know how she can choose between her two boys I mean she loves them both. How can she choose one over the other? She knowns that eventually to break the curse she is going to have to choose one; only one can be her soulmate. Will it be her light haired boyfriend or her dark haired boyfriend?

One of Ryder’s new teachers her guidance counselor Professor Onassis helps her with her curse. Ryder is determined to find all that she can about her curse and to break it. She is tired of dying and being reincarnated over and over again. Besides she is having a hard time deciding who her one true love, her soulmate is.

The Curse of Betrayal

Ryder must choose her soulmate to break the curse. She is having a hard time because she loves both her boys; Ollie and Ari very much. How can she just make a decision like that? How can she love one more than the other? She knows when she makes her decision someone is going to leave with a broken heart. How can she hurt one of her boys like that?

Even though she is dreading the day they all have to fight she is glad to have so many people on her side. She dreads having to go to the Underworld and bring all her friends she knows not everyone will come back and that hurt her very much. She would gladly give up her own life if she could save all her friends and keep them safe.

While I was reading A Curse Books Trilogy I would get so engrossed in it that I think I may have at times felt as if I was Ryder and that I was actually feeling what she felt. There were times while I was reading that I would find myself with this overwhelming sadness come over me and tears would be streaming down my face. I just love books where the author can make you feel as if you are the characters and you feel what they are feeling. If you love books like this then you will love A Curse Books Trilogy.

Blurb Blitz + #Giveaway: Breaking Hearts by Melissa Shirley & Head Over Heels by Crystal B. Bright @GoddessFish

Breaking Hearts
by Melissa Shirley
GENRE: Contemporary Romance

BLURB:

Can tragedies have a happy ending in Storybook Lake?

Every town has one—a mean girl, hell-bent on taking down everything in her path—and Danielle Ranier played the role to a tee. She broke up Storybook Lake’s most beloved couple and to save herself from a lifetime of lectures on morality, she hopped on the first plane out of town. Six years, one child, and a big secret later, she’s back, fleeing from her abusive husband, who isn’t quite willing to set her free. Now on trial for a murder she didn’t commit, Simon Hunter, the only man she’s ever loved is offering her a lifetime of love and security. If she could only reveal the secrets long-held inside her, a family that never was might finally come together . . .

Excerpt:

How it all started.

Since the moment I first noticed boys in fifth grade, Simon Hunter was the boy I saw myself growing old with. He had the best smile, the most expressive honey-colored eyes, and a way with people that made an entire town love him. Even when he didn’t know it, he was everything to me. Any minute I could sneak into his presence was a minute I savored and cherished.

When we got around to the business of being adults, our schedules seldom coordinated, but we spent most Fridays together. I’d skipped out on the last three, wanting him to see what it would be like without me. I wanted him to miss me with a desperate passion.

The missing only happened on my end, and I had the phone log to prove it. As it went to voice mail, I glared at my phone and left my tenth message…a pitiful, I-miss-you-please-call-me-and-let-me-know-you’re-okay kind of message. Since high school, he’d been my reason for waking up in the morning, the hero in the dreams I had every night, and the focus of all the moments in between. And damn it. Friday was our day.

After a quick makeup check, I left my apartment, the one we’d planned to share up until a few months ago when he started making all those trips to LA with Gatlin. I kicked the jealousy away with the toe of my shoe against a rock on the sidewalk.

For three full blocks, I took my frustration out on chunks of concrete until I strolled past the bakery. It took every ounce of my will not to press my nose against the window to see if he’d decided to loiter inside while his sister worked, or if he’d just run in to get some free pastries. His car was parked out front, so I leaned against it for a few minutes, waiting…remembering the first time he kissed me…the way his hand cupped the side of my face, the brush of his lips so softly over mine. Had we been sixteen? Seventeen? It was a lifetime ago.

Head Over Heels
by Crystal B. Bright
GENRE: Contemporary Romance

BLURB:

Sometimes it takes hurt to open your heart…,

At twenty-two, Thane Wells is the highest-paid pitcher in Major League Baseball—and he owes it all to his adoptive Mama, “Queen” Elizabeth Sommerville, a wise, beautiful, entrepreneurial African-American woman who always encouraged him and his two white brothers to reach for the stars…the woman Thane still talks to daily. He never dreamed their most recent conversation would be their last. With his beloved supporter suddenly gone, Thane is grief-stricken, shaken, and vulnerable—especially to a woman like Kari Meyers.

Kari’s had her eye on Thane for a while, but strictly for business. As a junior sports agent, she’s hungry to sign him, especially when she hears his current agent will be retiring soon. When she finally locates Thane, she’s shocked to discover he’s attending his mother’s funeral—and he’s shocked to find Kari in his hotel room. Assuming she’s an escort is just the beginning of their misunderstandings. But one thing that’s clear is their mutual attraction. As a single mom with an NBA ex, Kari has a rule against dating athletes. Yet as circumstances bring the two closer together, they just might find they’re on the same team, heart and soul…

Excerpt:

“Hey!”

She turned, hoping to see Thane calling for her. Instead, she saw the other businessman who had been sitting with Alec Fogel. Out of curiosity, she waited as he walked up to her.

“Do I know you?” Kari asked as she held on to the strap of her purse.

“No. And I don’t know you, but I’d like to.” The statuesque older man ran his hand over his silver hair. “My name is Frank Milliner. I’m the owner of the Winning Edge Agency. I heard what you said in there to Thane Wells. What agency do you work at now?”

Kari regarded him for a moment before speaking. “I don’t. I was hoping to sign him up as my client.”

“Wait. You don’t work at an agency? How did you even know about him?”

Great. Another man who probably underestimated her passion for sports and her drive for a career. She would have to correct that perception right now.

“I could use someone like you in my company. I’m assuming you’ve finished school.” Frank crossed his arms over his chest as he studied her.

“Just graduated.”

He laughed and shook his head. “Yes, you are exactly what I need for my business. We should talk.” He tried to guide her back into the hotel.

Kari stayed cemented to the cracked walkway. “I’m not exactly welcome back in there. Can we meet somewhere else?”

Frank smiled. “Of course.”

Although she’d missed one opportunity, she hoped this one would turn out to be a winner. That didn’t mean she would be giving up on Thane Wells. He wouldn’t be the one who got away.

Book Blast + #Giveaway: Unchained Melody by Cynthia Roberts @CynthiasRomance @GoddessFish

Unchained Melody
by Cynthia Roberts
GENRE: Contemporary Romance

BLURB:

Pamela Landers had it all, a senior partnership with a top law firm, expensive car, and a luxurious condo. What she desired most was a loving husband, children and a life filled with precious memories that would comfort her through her golden years.

Funny how fate has a way of steering you down that path where dreams really can come true. When Pamela encounters Gavin Templeton along her journey, she has some life-altering decisions to make that eventually lead her to happily ever after.

Excerpt:

“Nice to meet you, Mr. Templeton. I’ve been trying to get to Sugar Run for the past two years, but …” she paused. “I just don’t know how to say no to my boss.”

He chuckled and pointed her way.

“Well, good for you. All work and no play … well, you know the rest.” He interjected.

Then she thought. I’ll be damned. She knew that name. Everyone knew the Templeton name. She was rather titillated by his attention. The Templeton’s, were quite known in the Northeast. Not only was Sugar Run a rather luxurious five-star resort, but his family had acquired over fifty acres of prime lakefront property and started developing it into one of the most eloquent gated communities that would offer luxurious 2-3-bedroom town homes, a 9-hole golf course, and private country club.
The cleft in his chin was more prominent when he smiled and it pleased her to know she was the cause of the sparkle in his eyes.

“And, please, call me Gavin.”

Her voice shook a little. “Pamela Landers … my name, that is and, thank you for sharing your table.”

The waitress arrived, took both of their orders, and refilled their coffee cups.

“So, tell me Pamela, what line of work occupies your every waking moment?”

“Law,” she answered. “My niche is wrongful death.”

The look that registered on his face made her wonder, if the legal field was something he found distasteful. She did not know why, but she wanted his approval. His opinion of her somehow mattered.

“Do you ski, Gavin?”

“Not an Olympic hopeful mind you, but I manage to make it to the bottom without breaking my neck.”

Pamela giggled.

His cell phone went off and he excused himself, as he rose and moved from the table. He was only gone for a matter of moments. When he returned to the table and rejoined her, he asked the waitress to bring him the check right away.

Pamela tried to hide her disappointment.

“Pressing business?” She asked, trying to keep the disappointment from her voice.

Gavin’s was evident as he sighed heavily. “I’m afraid so. There’s something I must attend to in Ashbury that needs my attention.” He rose and handed the waitress two twenty-dollar bills and told her to keep the change.

Pamela shook her head and raised her hand to argue but, he waved it off.

“Please, it was my pleasure to meet you.” His smile was warm and genuine. “Perhaps, you’ll join me for a cocktail this evening. I’ll send a note to your room.”

Pamela returned his smile. “Um, that would be nice,” she waved her finger at him, “but, the drinks are on me or, it’s a no.”

Gavin reached for her hand, and drew it to his lips, and stroked it tenderly with his thumb. “How can I refuse? Until later this evening then.” He bowed slightly and turned to exit.

Pamela was exuberant as she watched him leave, appreciating how well the jeans he was wearing fit around a rather nice tight ass and well-muscled thighs. Pamela relaxed and played back their meeting in her mind. Talk about fate … it was all rather unexpected and the immediate attraction she felt for him was even more surprising. She looked down at the thick, crisp waffles on her plate and began devouring them with a hunger that was as strong as her desire to meet up with the dashing and charming owner of Sugar Run.

AUTHOR BIO:

My love of reading romance fiction goes back to those early years when I was raising a young family. It wasn't until much later in life I actually took up the pen to write my first historical romance, Wind Warrior. I really don't fit into one specific niche. Once a story starts to flow, it's only then I know what genre/sub-genre it will fit under.

I have only one regret, and that is not getting to this point in my career much sooner, rather than later. Life has a way of setting up road blocks, which for me, was supposed to work out that way. Because of those detours, I have become a more passionate and expressive writer, allowing me to create the kind of raw human emotion I want my readership to feel.
It is my hope you walk away with not just an entertaining read, but the importance in knowing, "Without imagination & dreams, we lose the excitement of wonderful possibilities."
