Guardian of Secrets (Library Jumpers #2)
by Brenda Drake
Publication Date: February 7, 2017
Publisher:  Entangled Teen

Being a Sentinel isn’t all fairytales and secret gardens.

Sure, jumping through books into the world’s most beautiful libraries to protect humans from mystical creatures is awesome. No one knows that better than Gia Kearns, but she could do without the part where people are always trying to kill her. Oh, and the fact that Pop and her had to move away from her friends and life as she knew it.

And if that isn’t enough, her boyfriend, Arik, is acting strangely. Like, maybe she should be calling him “ex,” since he’s so into another girl. But she doesn’t have time to be mad or even jealous, because someone has to save the world from the upcoming apocalypse, and it looks like that’s going to be Gia.

Maybe. If she survives.

OTHER BOOKS IN THE SERIES:

Gia Kearns would rather fight with boys than kiss them. That is, until Arik, a leather clad hottie in the Boston Athenaeum, suddenly disappears. While examining the book of world libraries he abandoned, Gia unwittingly speaks the key that sucks her and her friends into a photograph and transports them into a Paris library, where Arik and his Sentinels—magical knights charged with protecting humans from the creatures traveling across the gateway books—rescue them from a demonic hound.

Jumping into some of the world's most beautiful libraries would be a dream come true for Gia, if she weren’t busy resisting her heart or dodging an exiled wizard seeking revenge on both the Mystik and human worlds. Add a French flirt obsessed with Arik and a fling with a young wizard, and Gia must choose between her heart and her head, between Arik's world and her own, before both are destroyed.

Interview with Brenda Drake

What inspired you to write Guardian of Secrets?

The inspiration for the story was a coffee table book full of the world’s most beautiful libraries. I was in a bookstore when I came across it. I wanted to jump through the pages and visit all the amazing libraries in the photographs. I then imagined a battle in one of them and had to write it. I bought the book, went home, and started plotting the story right away.

When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

I’ve always loved books since I was a little girl looking at picture books. But the first memory I have of wanting to write one of my own was when I was around eight. I asked my grandmother how to write one. She told me to just start writing and see where it took me. So I wrote a really short story in one of my notebooks about a family of rabbits. It took many years, when I became a stay-at-home mom, for me to follow my dream more seriously and write my first full-length novel.

What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

About nine, I guess. My memories before then are a little fragmented. I remember reading old books from the bookcases in my grandparents’ house while visiting them. Stories such as The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Story of King Arthur and His Knights by Howard Pyle and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis kept me company whenever my sister and cousin would ditch me because I was too young for them. Looking back at it now, I guess they did me a favor because I’d fallen in love with books.

What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

My first choice would be young adult and fantasy books. I do read in all genres and categories. If the premise attracts me, I’ll pick it up.

What is your favorite book?

My favorite book is The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. It’s a book I read with my grandmother and it is still dear to my heart to this day. I’ve even incorporated it into the Library Jumpers series. It’s a sort of tribute to my grandmother.

You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

I’d have to say L.J. Smith. I devoured the Vampire Diaries and Night World books. She has a way of keeping you turning the pages and staying up past your bedtime. And the tension! I love the T.V. series, too! I miss vampires. Ha!

If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

I’d travel back to my grandparents’ house when I was a young girl. My Italian grandfather was so giving and he would cook a spaghetti dinner. All the aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends would eat and laugh together. We’d play cards and my parents would let me stay up until after bedtime. I miss those days so much.

When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

Mostly, writing comes easy for me. There are times when I get stuck on a plot point and times when I struggle to stay motivated, but I enjoy that part of writing, too.

Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

We have two cats and a ferret. The ferret is so much fun and such a sweet little guy. One cat is a great huntress, but very loving to us. The other cat, who I named Gia, was abused before we rescued her. She’s afraid of everyone and everything, but loves to cuddle with my husband and me.

What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?

I die for Mexican food. I’m addicted to Gold Fish crackers for snacking. And I drink tons of coffee, which I’m trying to cut down (emphasis on “try”).

Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Learn your trade. The best way to do that is to read and research how the publishing industry works. Write something every day. It doesn’t have to be much. Something as simple as a page a day would work, and you never know, by the end of the year, you’ll have written a novel.

Brenda Drake is a New York Times bestselling author of Thief of Lies (Library Jumpers #1), Guardian of Secrets (Library Jumpers #2), Touching Fate (Fated Series #1), and Cursing Fate (Fated Series #2). She grew up the youngest of three children, an Air Force brat, and the continual new kid at school. She hosts workshops and contests for writers such as Pitch Wars and Pitch Madness on her blog, and holds Twitter pitch parties on the hashtag, #PitMad. When she’s not writing or hanging out with her family, she haunts libraries, bookstores, and coffee shops, or reads someplace quiet and not at all exotic (much to her disappointment).

Book Tour + #Giveaway: The Dreadnought Collective by Terry Tumbler @terrytumbler @SDSXXTours

The Collective will embrace several types of Black Arts as it grows and faces unusual challenges. These once belonged to the realms of Science Fiction but are fast becoming a reality in the emerging new world.
This is a series of Whodunits set in the future.

Seb Cage Begins His Adventures
The Dreadnought Collective Book 1
by Terry Tumbler
Genre: YA SciFi Fantasy

Seb and his younger brother Bart customarily spend all of their long summer holiday in Spain, with their grandparents. Gradually, as they all become older, relationships are strained, as the old folk try to find things to keep the boys amused.
It is not long before the grandfather, Tumbler, who is a retired detective, is using Seb as a trainee investigator to keep tabs on the movements of a sector of the local town who he thinks ‘don’t fit it in’ – they are in fact dwarves of alien origin.
Soon, Tumbler and his apprentice are rumbled, and Seb is invited to join a summer campus. Coincidentally, this is run by the dwarves and has only recently been set up, virtually on the Tumbler’s doorstep!
At the campus, it gradually becomes apparent that Seb and his classmates have been chosen beforehand, by genetic engineering. They find that they possess special abilities, which have been implanted in them at an early age, and realise that these are now being developed in a matter of weeks.
Whatever plans they may have had for the future, their chosen destiny now awaits them.

The Inlooker: Full Length
The Dreadnought Collective Book 2

This is a ‘black humour’ science fiction story set in the near future, where a man finds that he has a very special talent. It is to take over other people’s souls and thus possess their bodies as if they were his own.
As he becomes increasingly aware of his abilities, he first uses them to mete out justice to mentally warped criminals, and then to undertake sexual adventures.
Growing tired of what are, in the scheme of things, trivial pursuits, he embarks on a life of crime intent on accumulating serious amounts of money. Whilst fleecing the wealthy, he comes across an alien hiding amongst us, and is impressed by the seamless transport system on its own planet, so he decides to emulate it on Planet Earth.
With a colleague recruited from The Lockheed Skunk Works in America, he develops a vehicle based on UFO technology, and uses it as a stepping stone to power. His motivation soon goes beyond his revolutionary and hugely successful transport system, and extends to a serious attempt at population reduction. For this he requires even more prominence on the world stage, as he battles aliens to prevent annihilation of the expanding human race.
This book charts his progress, as he strives to achieve the impossible. It also monitors the impact on his family life, where he eventually has to decide whether to opt for mortality or immortality.
If all you want to read about is sexual adventures, and cannot be bothered with the future of mankind, this book is not for you. It is intended for those who like to ponder the value of life as we lead it, and what it could be like if we chose to take up the challenge.

The Time Slipsters
The Dreadnought Collective Book 3

A group of friends who have drifted apart decide to reunite and take a trip together. It is the near future, and their intention is to travel on the latest type of transport, in order to visit the ancient sites in Turkey.
They want to do this in luxury, and the travel company they selected has done its best to accommodate their desires. They are lost for words when they first cast their eyes on the spectacular, gleaming new vehicle waiting for them. It is in fact alien in technology, and far more of a futuristic craft than a mere ground-hugging coach.
Unwittingly, they are entering a world where time travel is a reality and machines can cater for individuals as well as the masses.
Soon, they embarking on a sightseeing tour like no other they could have imagined, and meeting a time-travelling stranger who takes them under his wing.
More than one person has a hidden agenda, as they realise when reach a highly protected secret location. It contains hybrid creatures on which the Gods of mythology are based.

The Deaduction Agency
The Dreadnought Collective Book 4

Witness at first-hand a group of specialist investigators, as they set up and run a new, innovative crime fighting agency. They are dedicated to the resolution of criminal cases using paranormal assistance. This will be a new, innovative and emerging brand of policing designed to protect the citizens of our country.
Read how they deal with the anti-social, disturbed behavior of a wayward, divorced husband, who is on the verge of destroying the lives of his ex-wife and their two young sons.
Read how they identify the members of a murderous ring of pedophiles from relatively few clues, and bring them to justice.
Read how they move from ineffectively resolving one case at a time, and onto tackling multiple cases with far more beneficial results to society.
Read thereafter how they clear the penitentiaries of criminals, starting with the most dangerous inmates, using novel means to cleanse their souls of sin, and equip them for new roles in life in special clearing centers. The objective is to reintegrate them into society, rendered capable of performing straightforward tasks and genuinely purified, via the novel process of atonement.
Read how they find one talented young man who was lost, presumed dead, and reunite him with his family. Thereafter, as agents of change, they help launch him on the path to stardom.
This is not a simple, gory, two dimensional book, but an exploration into the timely use of mediums in crime detection. It can pay dividends in assisting the fight against crime.
They use the latest techniques and technology in a future world that is not far removed from that which exists today.

The Sightseers Agency
The Dreadnought Collective Book 5

The first recruit to the new Sightseers Agency is a remote viewer who actively seeks the resolution of events threatening world security.
Both his fledgling agency and that of The Deaduction Agency are members of The Dreadnought Collective.
The term ‘Dreadnought’ is based on a type of battleship introduced in the early 20th century, larger and faster than ever before and equipped entirely with large-caliber guns.
It applies in this instance because the cerebrally talented agents who enter its portals are expected to fear nobody and be scared by nothing in the performance of their duties.
They pursue those who indulge in criminal and seditious activities in the modern meritocracy using unorthodox techniques.

Excerpt:

The Deaduction Agency

Richard and Honey sauntered across to the struggling pair, and Hugh instructed him, “Remove the handcuff-cord from my waist, and put it on the accused, one wrist only. I want his hands behind his back.”
Richard paused to study the new style ‘handcuff’ with interest; it was of a type that he’d never seen before.
“Is this what you mean?” he asked, holding up a single length of thick cord, which he had pulled off the belt. He noticed that it was highly flexible, and woven with glittering, gold-colored metallic strands.
“Yes,” Hugh confirmed, glancing over his shoulder. “That’s my ‘cuff-cord’. Drape it over the wrist I’m holding, then I’ll place his other one next to it.”
He looked at Richard, who was studying this new-style restraining device with fascination, and snapped, “Take your time, why don’t you!”
The man was making a ruckus like a hippo bellowing, and the front doors of the surrounding houses began to stream light as the occupants craned their necks to see what was happening.
Richard jerked out of his reverie, and complied as demanded. It was a wonder to behold, as the golden cord slithered like a snake around the wrist that Hugh was holding and then wrapped itself around the other that Hugh pulled roughly back, to join them in a single loop.
The two flat-ends seemed to fuse together invisibly as they met, to the fascination of Richard and Honey.
When Richard positioned the ‘cuff-cord’, he made contact with Jack’s bared wrist and involuntarily shivered. He had read his mind, and experienced the insensitive, mental brutality that oozed from him.
“What’s your name?” Hugh asked, allowing the man to straighten.
“Jack, Jack Lestrange,” he spluttered loudly.
Honey muttered, “Surprise, surprise!”
The Sightseers Agency
There was no doubting her anger; she was seething with it.
“Scumbag!” she hissed, picking up a heavy onyx pencil holder from her desktop and hurling it at her protégé. Adrenalin fueled her strength.
He held his head high as he strode towards the door. He had his back to her, and he should have been unaware of the object aimed at the back of his head. It could have killed him, but it stopped mid-flight and dropped to the marble floor, where it broke into sizeable pieces and cut into the surface.
He paused, turned, and fixed her with a steely gaze, which chilled her to the bone. Coming to her senses, she realized how vulnerable she was to her former employee if he decided to retaliate. The room was soundproof, the two guards outside unaware of what was taking place, and the man she had tried to assault could attack with impunity; he didn’t need to use visible, physical force.
The woman was Tara DiCaprio, an angular blond-haired, smooth skinned woman with a jutting jaw and athletic physique. She was in her forties, and her formidable presence was consistent with her role as a ‘Black Ops’ Associate Director of the Central Intelligence Agency.
The man who had antagonized her was special agent Richard Pencil, a tall, slim dark-haired man in his thirties who kept himself fit by practising martial arts in his spare time. Her anger was justified, and was the main reason he was exercising self-restraint.

Richard was a very special agent, as had been proven when he instinctively protected his back with an invisible shield. He knew Tara might attempt to attack him, having read her intentions.

To give you some idea of my background, I was born in 1944, retired in 2004 and now living with my wife in Spain, amongst the Spanish. For over 30 years I was in the computer industry, some of which were with IBM before I got itchy feet, even though I was well regarded. Afterwards, I worked as an Organisation & Methods specialist and came up with some cracking ideas before I moved into mainstream computing and became involved in programming, analysis and management.
At school, I gained a string of school level certificates before leaving and gaining a commercial apprenticeship, an Advanced Certificate in Business Studies, and professional qualifications in Personnel Management and the Institute of Company Secretaries and Administrators. During my time, I have used desk top publishing and spearheaded the writing and publication of two detailed, technical manuals, one of which was regarded as the administrative bible by a (then) major force, British Olivetti. The other manual was used by me as a resident teacher of electronic data interchange (EDI) for a specialist software house, where it was distributed as a tour de force.
I took up writing at an advanced age simply because I had the time and desire, and the first hand enjoyable experience of helping my younger daughter to tame her two mischievous boys.

Discern - an award-winning and bestselling urban fantasy novel by Andrea Pearson

Nicole put her things down, not wanting anything to be in her hands when she picked up the disgusting book. She reached for it, but hesitated. Already, she could sense warmth coming from the leather cover, and she wasn’t even touching it. Its magical pulses were different from the other items—they seemed to drip off the book like sweat.

Nicole hesitated, but wasn’t sure why. It wasn’t as if something bad would happen, right? She took a deep breath and placed her hands on the book. It shivered under her touch and she cringed, pulling back. The sensation of warm leather made her flesh crawl, and she rubbed her hands and arms on her jeans, trying to get the feeling to go away.

Come on, Nicole. Don’t wimp out.

Without letting herself think about it, she picked up the book and lifted the cover.

A wind rushed over her, blowing her hair back, roaring in her ears. She caught a brief whiff of tobacco smoke before the surge of air reversed and sucked the breath out of her lungs, making her gasp.

The floor under her quaked. The book vibrated. The leather on the cover moved, muscles beneath it flexing. Nicole tried to drop the book, but couldn’t. She was unable to control her hands or fingers. They clenched so tightly, they ached. A shadow covered the pages of the book, preventing her from reading.

What was going on? She gasped again, trying to breathe against the strong wind. She felt someone touch her shoulder, but she couldn’t move. Her fingers still clung to the book. The shadow on the pages shifted, roiled, and turned toward her, the brief outline of a face visible. It watched her for several moments.

Nicole . . .

The voice was soft, deep. A strange yearning inside her made her want to read the book, to understand. To join the owner of the voice, though she didn’t know where or what he was.

The wind slowed to a gentle and familiar caress across her cheek. Familiar?

Then suddenly, it all stopped. The book fell from her hands and slammed itself shut. She backed away, her arms, legs—everything—shaking.

“What happened?” Professor Coolidge asked next to her, making her jump.

“I—I don’t know.” Nicole tried to smooth her hair, but her hands shook too much. She tucked them under her arms. “It said my name . . . and there was a shadow. In-inside it.”

Coolidge lifted the leather book. His mouth popped open in surprise. “You’ve activated a force within it—something alive.” He looked at her, fear and worry on his face. “How did you do that?”

Nicole shook her head. “I don’t know,” she repeated.

Professor Coolidge put the book back on the table. “I’m not sure what to say, other than the book is much more powerful than it used to be.” He peered at her, scrutinizing her. “And I’d love to know why it called to you, why you woke it up, when so many others have not.”

Praise for the Book

Booklist (starred review)

"At its core, this is a romance, with all the push and pull that goes along with impossible love, and Little elevates the story by creating a perilous landscape, both outward and inward, as Jayden must deal with the hardship of desert life as well as her own desires. . . descriptions of the landscape are evocative in both desolation and in beauty. Just as good is the pacing, which gets the blood pumping for both characters and readers. This will heighten anticipation for a no-doubt exciting conclusion."

Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

"Rich historical details are deftly woven into Jayden's narration, and the dynamics of Jayden's tribe are vividly drawn. Jayden's story becomes as much about finding herself as it is about finding love."

Reader: "This book took my breath away. I loved the immersive story and the rich setting of ancient Mesopotamia. The customs, traditions, and beliefs of the desert people were captivating and every time I set the book down I couldn't wait to pick it up again. I've never read anything like this before."

Reader: "Forbidden was so captivating that I awoke early in the morning, while my family was still sleeping, so I could finish the last pages of this beautifully haunting tale."

Excerpt:

My sister laid the tablet in her lap, running a finger along the symbols with affection.

“To Jayden, daughter of the Nephish

From Aliyah, Goddess of Sariba

The Goddess and High Priestess of Sariba officially invite you to witness the summer solstice sacrifice in two day’s time. It will be a night you will remember for the rest of your life. A permanent kinship with the Goddess will bless you and your family forever.”

“She sent an invitation to watch Sahmril sacrificed!” Grabbing the tablet, I threw it across the room where it hit the corner of a table and broke into pieces.

With a shriek, Leila staggered off the chair and crawled across the floor. Picking up the shards, she cradled them in her hands, trying to fit them together.

“Leila, what is wrong with you? How could you bring this despicable letter to me?”

She raised her eyes to mine. “You’ve been invited as a special guest because our little sister has been chosen to honor the Goddess. Her sacrifice will bring peace and love to this land. She is the pure vessel. We’re so lucky to have found her.”

“Lucky?” I echoed. The nonchalance manner in which she spoke was horrifying. “Our sister was hunted down for the express purpose of sacrificing her to the goddess.”

Excerpt:

LILY -

I woke with a terrible headache. The pounding reminded me of the night Annie and I discovered the potency and, the next morning, the after effects of martinis. The smile that thought brought to my face quickly faded when the throbbing intensified.

I feared opening my eyes. Not sure if that would make my head hurt worse and scared what I would see. I tried to recall my evening. I didn’t remember going to bed. Truth was, I didn’t remember coming home.

No. I remembered getting on the elevator. And, arguing on the phone with Annie, before getting on the elevator. And hanging up on Annie as I got on the elevator. But that was it. No getting into my apartment; no getting into my bed. I was trying to remember more when I remembered the most important thing, Laude.

I gradually opened my eyes and there she was. Sitting right next to me, staring at me. Her ears, which usually stood straight up, were down. Her head was down, too. Not exactly cowering  but not the usual morning, happy to see you posture of my puppy. It was a bit disconcerting to see those two dark eyes fixed on me, never mind not knowing how long they had been staring at me.

EXCERPT:

He arched down, grabbing my face between his callous palms, and a weird jolt of energy pulsed through me. Instead of pushing him away, strangely, the only thing I could think of was how long it’d been since I felt a man’s hands on my skin. His full focus was on me, the attention sending little tremors of awareness through me, as we stared at each other, speechless, our faces mere inches apart.

Move, Reason. Just fucking go.

My mind and body staged a mutiny by refusing to cooperate, as if daring the shifter to make another move. He did by pressing his lips against mine.

No, no, no. This will not do.

Reaching up, I slapped my hands against his wide shoulders with every intention of shoving him away. Instead, my fingers gripped him tight, pulling him closer. My lips parted before he sucked my tongue into his mouth.

Oh, baby Jesus. Why does he taste like my three favorite things—coffee, mint, and cinnamon?

Heather Hiestand was born in Illinois but her family migrated west before she started school. Since then she has claimed Washington State as home, except for a few years in California. She wrote her first story at age seven and went on to major in creative writing at the University of Washington. Her first published fiction was a mystery short story, but since then it has been all about the many flavors of romance. Heather’s first published romance short story was set in the Victorian period and she continues to return, fascinated by the rapid changes of the nineteenth century. The author of many novels, novellas and short stories, she makes her home in a small town with her husband and son and supposedly works out of her tiny office, though she mostly writes in her easy chair in the living room.
