Team Urban: Why I Love Urban Fantasy! @YABookShelf @EntangledTeen
Team Urban: Why I Love Urban Fantasy!
Brenda Drake - Guardian of Secrets (Library Jumpers, #2):
I’m such a fan of Urban Fantasy for many
reasons, but mostly because writers can take our normal world and, either
secret or not, add a dash of the fantastical to it. With mystical creatures
hiding from humans or living side by side with them, deliciously nefarious
things can happen. There’s just something extraordinary about urban fantasy.
It’s the ability of the writer to look at something normal in the human world
and mix it up. Changing a simple book into something that can transport someone
from library to library or hiding a zoo of magical beasts in a common suitcase.
Book Description:
Being a Sentinel
isn’t all fairytales and secret gardens. Sure, jumping through books into the
world’s most beautiful libraries to protect humans from mystical creatures is
awesome. No one knows that better than Gia Kearns, but she could do without the
part where people are always trying to kill her. Oh, and the fact that Pop and
her had to move away from her friends and life as she knew it.
And if that isn’t
enough, her boyfriend, Arik, is acting strangely. Like, maybe she should be
calling him “ex,” since he’s so into another girl. But she doesn’t have time to
be mad or even jealous, because someone has to save the world from the upcoming
apocalypse, and it looks like that’s going to be Gia.
Chris Cannon - Fanning the Flames (Going Down in Flames, #4):
1. There are no maidens that need to be rescued in
urban fantasy. More than likely the females are the ones kicking ass.
2. I love the snarky banter that occurs when you
throw modern day characters into strange/magical/supernatural circumstances.
3. Anything is possible in urban fantasy. There are
no rules about what types of paranormal creatures you can have. If you want to
create dragons that breathe fire, ice, wind, sonic waves, and lightning, you
can, just like I did in Going Down In Flames *cough cough shameless self
promotion
Book Description:
She isn't afraid
of anything...except losing the knight she loves. Bryn McKenna has it all,
including her smoking-hot knight turned live-in boyfriend, Valmont. Even though
she’s a hybrid dragon, she’s finally fitting into the new shape-shifting dragon
world that’s become her own. But her grandparents want to ruin everything by
making Bryn’s nightmare of an arranged marriage to Jaxon Westgate a reality. It
doesn’t help that Jaxon’s father is on a witch hunt for Rebel sympathizers and
Bryn finds herself in his line of fire.
If she doesn’t
say, “I do,” she’ll lose everything. Good-bye flying. Good-bye best friends.
Good-bye magic. But if she bends to her grandparents’ will and agrees to marry
Jaxon, she’ll lose the love of her life—her knight.
Shonna Slayton - Spindle:
Urban fantasy
reminds me that our own world is magical. We are so used to the way our world
works that we take for granted how incredible it is that our heart beats, our
brain imagines, that our eyes see color.
As a writer,
urban fantasy allows me to open up my imagination on multiple planes. I still
work with the real world, but I get to add layers onto that. It’s like going
from black and white TV to color. Like Dorothy in dusty old Kansas stepping
into the colorful land of Oz.
Book Description:
In a world where
fairies lurk and curses linger, love can bleed like the prick of a finger…
Briar Rose knows
her life will never be a fairy tale. She’s raising her siblings on her own, her
wages at the spinning mill have been cut, and the boy she thought she had a
future with has eyes for someone else. Most days it feels like her best friend,
Henry Prince, is the only one in her corner…though with his endless flirty
jokes, how can she ever take him seriously?
When a mysterious
peddler offers her a “magic” spindle that could make her more money, sneaking
it into the mill seems worth the risk. But then one by one, her fellow spinner
girls come down with the mysterious sleeping sickness…and Briar’s not immune.
If Briar wants to
save the girls—and herself—she’ll have to start believing in fairy tales…and in
the power of a prince’s kiss.
Tara Fuller - Inbetween (Kissed by Death, #1):
Book Description:
Death doesn’t fall in love. Usually. Since the
car crash that took her father’s life three years ago, Emma’s life has been a
freaky—and unending—lesson in caution. Surviving “accidents” has taken priority
over being a normal seventeen-year-old, so Emma spends her days taking pictures
of life instead of living it. Falling in love with a boy was never part of the
plan. Falling for a reaper who makes her chest ache and her head spin? Not an option.
It’s not easy being dead, especially for a reaper
in love with a girl fate has put on his list not once, but twice. Finn’s fellow
reapers give him hell about spending time with Emma, but Finn couldn’t let her
die before, and he’s not about to let her die now. He will protect the girl he
loves from the evil he accidentally unleashed, even if it means sacrificing the
only thing he has left…his soul.
Danielle Ellison - Salt (Salt, #1):
Whether it's
witches, demons, ghosts or other types monsters, there's nothing like escaping
the sometimes mundane reality of our world, or giving what we know every day a
spice of fantasy. Filled with kick-ass
heroines who aren't afraid to fight for what they believe in (and hot,
just-as-fierce love interests) Urban Fantasy inspires you look beyond what you
see and be more than you think you can be. Plus, life is more with some magic:
more dangerous, more unpredictable, more chaotic, more fun.
Book Description:
Penelope is a
witch, part of a secret society protecting humans from demon attacks. But when
she was a child, a demon killed her parents—and stole her magic. Since then,
she’s been pretending to be something she’s not, using her sister’s magic to
hide her own loss, to prevent being sent away.
When she’s
finally given the chance to join the elite demon-hunting force, Penelope thinks
that will finally change. With her sister’s help, she can squeeze through the
tests and get access to the information she needs to find “her” demon. To take
back what was stolen.
Then she meets
Carter. He’s cute, smart, and she can borrow his magic, too. He knows her
secret—but he also has one of his own.
Suddenly,
Penelope’s impossible quest becomes far more complicated. Because Carter’s not
telling her everything, and it’s starting to seem like the demons have their
own agenda…and they’re far too interested in her.
Rachel Harris - My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century (My Super Sweet Sixteenth Century,
#1):
Book Description:
On the precipice of her sixteenth birthday, the
last thing lone wolf Cat Crawford wants is an extravagant gala thrown by her
bubbly stepmother and well-meaning father. So even though Cat knows the
family’s trip to Florence, Italy, is a peace offering, she embraces the magical
city and all it offers. But when her curiosity leads her to an unusual gypsy
tent, she exits…right into Renaissance Firenze.
Thrust into the sixteenth century armed with only
a backpack full of contraband future items, Cat joins up with her ancestors,
the sweet Alessandra and protective Cipriano, and soon falls for the gorgeous
aspiring artist Lorenzo. But when the much-older Niccolo starts sniffing
around, Cat realizes that an unwanted birthday party is nothing compared to an
unwanted suitor full of creeptastic amore.
Can she find her way back to modern times before her Italian adventure turns
into an Italian forever?
Gloria Craw - Atlantis Rising (Atlantis Rising, #1):
I love Urban Fantasy
because it infuses normal life with myth and magic. It’s so exciting to have
something in common with a character who finds a magic object, special ability
or a secret origin. The possible ways her courage and passion might be tested
are endless. When she does triumph against fantastic odds, I’m left feeling
inspired and reassured that I can overcome great obstacles in my everyday life
too. Urban Fantasy reminds me that the ordinary in us can sometimes
be…extraordinary.
Book Description:
We’ve stayed
hidden too long… I am different. I have always been different, but no one can
know or my life will be in danger. So I hide in plain sight, wearing drab
clothes and thick glasses and trying to be invisible. I’m so good at hiding, no
one has ever noticed me. Until Ian…the mysterious and oh-so-cute boy I know I
need to avoid.
Now I have been
seen. And more terrifying still, I am wanted—by those who would protect me and
those who would destroy everything and everyone I love. But if they’re all
terrified about who I am, wait until they see what I can do…

Angles – Part I
Erin Lockwood
Publication date: November 3rd 2016
Genres: New Adult, Romance
A compelling love story about Caralee, her best friend Teddy, and her new love interest, Sam. The intensity of Sam entering into Cara’s life challenges her friendship with Teddy – which was forged long ago when they encountered a deranged gunman. Teddy will stop at nothing to protect Cara – even if it means keeping his long time business associate and once best friend far away from her.
This story is about friendship and relationship triangles, love and protection, love and understanding, and love and true love.
Interview with Erin Lockwood
What
inspired you to write Angles - Part I?
I first wrote Angles as a short story
for my husband highlighting all the crazy things that happened at the beginning
of our love story. I discovered how much I loved to write and I had this urge
to embellish and go crazy with my imagination. With the short story, I held
myself back and stuck to the facts. But when I was done I saw that it would
make a wonderful contemporary romance, except there wasn’t enough drama,
antagonists and the characters weren’t flawed enough. So I rewrote it and it
grew to three times its size. I added antagonists, new controversies, new
characters and I changed the character profile for the main characters. What I
got in the end was a drama packed novel.
Can you
tell us a little bit about the next books in the Angles Trilogy or what you
have planned for the future?
I’m working on three manuscripts right
now and Angles - Part II is one of them. I plan for it to be released August
1st later this year. The story will pick up where it left off with Sam and
Cara. Their relationship will develop and there will be a lot of secrets
uncovered about Sam and Teddy’s past.
Can you
tell us a little bit about the characters in Angles - Part I?
Almost all of the book is told from
Cara’s perspective. She is by far a flawed damsel in distress, but I felt as if
her character is very relatable for twenty somethings. Nobody is perfect at
that age! She has anxiety issues born from a traumatizing experience she and
Teddy shared years ago. It affected her so deeply it's debilitated her to some
degree, and she relies on Teddy - maybe to an unhealthy level. Teddy is a great
friend but maybe too good of a friend. He just got married to Anna and should
be focused on starting his married life with her, but instead he seems to care
more about what’s going on with Cara. Sam is a very strong male lead character.
He is gorgeous, strong and protective. He’s a brilliant business man and he
only has eyes for Cara. He’s patient but always calculated and in control. The
chemistry between Sam and Cara are off the charts!
You
know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and
why?
I love so many of Katy Evan’s books, I
think I love ALL of Colleen Hoover’s, but my favorite is probably Jamie
McGuire. For starters, Beautiful Disaster is my favorite contemporary romance.
I could read it over and over. It has all the elements I love about a novel. I
think what I love most about Jamie is her generosity to help those who haven’t
made it yet. Not everyone who has success feels compelled to share their
secrets and help others. That’s something I think is very special about her.
If you
could time-travel would you travel to the future or the past?
The future! My husband makes the
future sound so great. He gets so excited about technology and the benefits of
the
singularity, space travel, self
driving cars, living forever, etc. I’ll go anywhere with him, and I’m positive
he would go to the future :)
Do you
have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?
We do!!! This past November we got a
little teacup yorkie. Her name is Libby and we all love her so much. She’s not
even four pound s and so full of love and kisses. I’m one of those dog
moms, I put bows in her hair and carry her everywhere :P
Thanks for taking time out of your
busy schedule to visit with us today.
Author Bio:
Erin Lockwood grew up in Castro Valley, California and attended the University of Oregon, where she graduated in 2003 with a degree in journalism. From there she moved to Denver and spent the next seven years searching for the love of her life and building the family of her dreams.
It wasn’t long until, with children starting preschool and more time on her hands, Erin refocused on her career, beginning with a successful entry into the world of residential real estate as a Realtor. Free time was spent reading book after book (and binge-watching the subsequent films) in the New Adult genre. Feeling hopelessly in love with her husband, she wrote him a short story leading up to their fifth wedding anniversary. That’s when she discovered her tireless passion to share her experience of falling in love through fictional characters. That story evolved into the first novel in the Angles trilogy.
Erin still lives in Denver, Colorado with her husband, Phil, and their three children.

Eight months after the car crash that changed
everything, FBI agent Aidan Talley is back at work. New department, new case
and a new partner. Smart, athletic and handsome, Jameson Walker is twelve years
his junior. Even if Aidan was ready to move on—and he's not—Jamie is
off-limits.
Jamie's lusted after Aidan for three years,
and the chance to work with San Francisco's top agent directly is too good to
pass up. Aidan is prickly—to put it mildly—but a growing cyber threat soon
proves Jamie's skills invaluable.
Jamie's
talents paint a target on his back, and Aidan is determined to protect him. But
with hack after hack threatening a high-security bio-containment facility, time
is running out to thwart a deadly terrorist attack. They'll have to filter out
distractions, on the case and in their partnership, to identify the real enemy,
solve the case and save thousands of lives, including their own.

Excerpt from SINGLE MALT
Wrenching
the steering wheel, Jamie fought the skid, stopping them from spinning out and
aiming them down the next alley instead. “We’ve got company.” He kept one eye
on the road ahead and one on the rearview mirror. The SUV on their tail
accelerated, gaining faster in the path Jamie cleared for them. Impact was
inevitable. “Shit, hold on!”
The
other car rammed them again, hurtling the Rover forward, he and Aidan straining
their seat belts. He switched the LR4 into manual and tapped the shifter
paddles, gaining some separation from their pursuer.
He
cleared the alley, finding they’d been diverted away from the Port.
“What
the fuck is going on?” Aidan was white-knuckling the oh-shit handle above his
door, torso twisted to look behind them, his face paler than Jamie had ever
seen it.
“Someone
doesn’t want us at the Port.” Pulling a hard right, Jamie aimed them down
another street leading right back there.
And
into the path of a second oncoming SUV.
A
horrified “Oh God, no” escaped from his partner just as Jamie saw an
under-construction on-ramp ahead on the left, orange-and-white-striped barrels
blocking the entrance. He pressed the gas pedal to the floor and headed
straight for the oncoming truck.
“Whiskey!”
Aidan cried, head spinning forward and back. “What the fuck are you doing?”
Their
pursuers were closing in on either side, as bypassed alleys flew by left and
right.
“You’re
headed straight for them. Turn, goddammit!”
But
turning down one of those alleys would leave them cornered. There was only one
path to escape.
Jamie
grabbed the back of Aidan’s head and pushed it toward his knees, screaming,
“Hold on!”
At
the last possible second, he veered left, out of the path of the oncoming SUVs
and into the barrels. The SUVs in front and behind plowed into each other,
exploding in their wake, the blast momentum propelling the Rover farther than
Jamie had intended.
Through
the barrels and past the unfinished on-ramp.
Through
the guardrail.
And
down the cliff on the other side.

CASK STRENGTH (Agents Irish & Whiskey):
CASK STRENGTH (Agents Irish & Whiskey):
Professionally,
the FBI team of Aidan "Irish" Talley and Jameson
"Whiskey" Walker is as good as it gets, closing cases
faster than any team at the Bureau. Personally, it’s a different story.
Aidan’s feelings for Jamie scare the hell out of him: he won’t risk
losing another love no matter how heart-tripping the intimacy
between them. And loss is a grim reality with the terrorist
Renaud still on their trail, leaving a pile of bodies in his wake.

Going undercover on a new case gets them
out of town and off the killer's radar. They're assigned to investigate an
identity theft ring involving a college basketball team in Jamie's home
state, where Jamie's past makes him perfect for the role of
coach. But returning to the court brings more than old memories.
As secrets and shocking betrayals abound,
none may be more dangerous than the one Jamie’s been keeping: a
secret about the death of Aidan’s husband that could blow his partner's
world apart and destroy forever the fragile bonds of trust and love
building between them.

· Charlie
Davie is at his dad’s place.
I enjoy the mornings on my own. I miss him
when he’s not here. I do. It’s just that mornings are so much easier when he
isn’t here, I can’t feel bad about that, can I? It’s quieter with less rushing
around. I get to sit and enjoy my cup of coffee while scanning the news
headlines on my tablet, a treat I have to forgo when he’s here.
The evenings are lonely when he’s not here.
When I come home to an empty apartment. That’s when I miss his noise, his
running around annoying the hell out of me. To combat the loneliness I work
late, hang out with friends, and if I am lucky, like tonight, I go on a date.
Tonight I’m meeting Sean for drinks.
I met him online a couple days ago. He is
average looking and can’t spell worth a damn. Who needs an educated man though?
I’d like to be with an intelligent man, however, smart, interesting, quality
men with good jobs and their shit together, like pretty, fit, smaller women. I
get the leftovers, the rude boys and the horny idiots.
Sean is a construction worker with a
construction worker’s body, not overweight and not body builder cut. He looks
strong with a soft layer of fat covering the muscle mass. His profile isn’t my
ideal choice in a man, but beggars can’t be choosers. It’s stay home alone
again, or meet the guys who want to meet me, even if they aren’t what I want.
At least Sean isn’t a complete pig and asked
me a few questions about my experiences online dating and what kind of man I
want to find, before he started in on the sexting crap.
Sean: What do you like?
Me: I like to read and hang out with friends.
Sean: I mean in bed.
Me: Oh. Shouldn’t we at least meet before talking about sex?
Sean: Sorry I can’t help it. Your pics give me notty thoghts.
Me: OK.
Sean: How big are your tits?
Fuck. I hate this question and I get it a lot.
It’s not like I can hide the fact I have bloody watermelons on my chest. These
guys are always so crude, I don’t ask them the size of their package. If I
thought it would bother them I would, but guys seem to like getting that question
and are proud of the answer. I’ll have some fun with this shit and make the
idiot work for the answer. Guys like games, right?
Me: Guess
Sean: idk
Me: Guess or nothing.
Sean: DD
Me: No bigger
Sean: DDD
Me: No bigger
Sean: No shit. Bigger than ddd. Fuck.
Me: I hate them
Sean: Why? I love em
Me: Because men can’t see past them and only want to date them.
Sean: Come on babe. That’s not true.
Me: Really. Seems to be all you care about.
Sean: No. I respect you. I want more than just sex.
Me: Riiiiiight.
Sean: No really. How ‘bout you come over and I’ll show you.
Me: I’m not coming over to your place. I don’t know you.
Sean: Come on. You can trust me. I’m a good guy.
Me: I’m sure Charles Manson says the same thing.
Sean: Ouch that was uncalled for. Just come over and I’ll show you how good
I am.
Me: No. Meet me for a coffee or a drink.
Sean: I don’t do coffee meets.
Me: I don’t do meets at stranger’s houses. Either meet me in public or not
at all.
Sean: OK babe. Tomorrow night. Drinks at 8.
Me: Great where.
That probably means we’ll go back to his place
in his dictionary of dating. How long has it been since I got fucked? Too long.
Damn. I really should get myself an FWB to scratch the itch until I meet the
guy who deserves more. Maybe this guy will be that, a good roll in the hay kind
of guy. Lindsay swears by them and I haven’t had any luck in five years finding
anything real. Might as well try fake. Men want to pretend they have a
girlfriend without all the responsibility of love and commitment.
I hate fake. I hate giving guys a sex only
arrangement. I don’t get more than a quick, wham-bam-thank-you-mam, out of it.
The worst guys are the ones who make me feel like a free prostitute. Those are
the ones who want to meet only in private, fuck you, and tell you to go home.
These are the guys I regret getting naked with. The ones that have me hating
myself so much the next day I swear off men and delete my dating profile.
I hate those guys.
Sean is probably one of those guys.
Still, it’s better than bring home alone.
