Blog Tour + Review + #Giveaway: Autonomy by Jude Houghton @XpressoTours

Autonomy

Balmoral Murraine works in a Battery, assembling devices she doesn’t understand for starvation pay. Pasco Eborgersen is the pampered son of an Elite, trying to navigate the temptations of the Pleasure Houses, the self-sacrifice of the Faith, and the high-octane excitement of Steel Ball. They are two strangers, who never should have met, and now they will rip apart the world.

What happens when ninety percent of the world lives on skaatch – a jellyfish and insect composite?

What happens when mankind spends more time in alternative life sims instead of in the “real” world?

What happens when economic interest is the sole determinant of global decision making?

What happens when a single secret is discovered that calls into question everything we have ever believed?

Welcome to the Autonomy. Welcome to your future.

My Review:

Balmoral Murraine works in a Battery where most everyone works unless they are a part of the elites. Balmoral and her family are one of the lucky few who live in their own trailer in the stacks where some live with multi-families in the same dwelling. Balmoral and her family work fourteen hour shifts and sometime they even pull a double. It takes the whole family working just to have enough to eat.

In Balmoral’s world everyone is connected to iNet but is not allowed to be on iNet when they are working. But Balmoral was born with a gift of hacking so she doesn’t follow the rules very well after all she knows how to get around the rules without getting caught, most of the time that is.

Pasco Eborgersen is part of the elite crowd and has had most things handed to him on a silver platter as well as his twin brother. Pasco and his brother lost their father when they were teenagers and went to live with their uncle.

Pasco runs into a little bad luck but after running into Balmoral his luck is changing or so he thinks in the beginning. He soon finds out that just being with Balmoral could cost him his life. Pasco starts having feelings for Balmoral and wants nothing more than to keep her safe. Now Balmoral and Pasco are on the run just trying to stay alive. If they are caught they know it will be the end of both to them.

I have to say that I really loved the whole concept and the world that Jude Houghton created for Autonomy. I love stories where the world that is created could become our reality. Autonomy is one story that will stay with me for a long, long, long time to come. I am so glad I was given this opportunity to read it.

I would highly recommend Autonomy to anyone who loves a good dystopian or science fiction novel. Autonomy is one book you might just want to add to your collection.

Author Bio:
Jude developed a love of fantasy from a relatively early age after realising an innate talent for making stuff up could result in something other than detention. Working across the globe in fields as diverse as journalism, data entry, sales, management consultancy and babysitting, Jude has partially succeeded in putting an English and History degree from Oxford University to good use. A somnambulist, insomniac, lover of letters, Jude writes late into the night, most nights, tumbling down the rabbit hole to dream of other lives. Jude currently lives in Pennsylvania with an over-enthusiastic family and absurdly entitled dog.

Excerpt:
The room was steamy with dancing and pheromones. Harmony ordered a Bud Light and ran the icy bottle over her forehead.

A new song started up. Shaking off her melancholy, she strode right into the heart of the crowded dance floor. Steve Earle’s “Copperhead Road”—an easy line dance. She counted her way in and soon was stomping across the dance floor. The loud music pounded in her chest. Even though it had been years since she’d line danced, her body knew the steps without her thinking about them. The heartache receded a little.

More dancing. Maybe some shots. Maybe making out with a stranger. That’ll keep me from feeling…this. Whatever this ugly feeling is.

She danced solo for three more songs. Then an old-timer led her in a waltz. The country gentleman was followed by a baby-faced cowboy in a camo baseball cap. She danced three more songs with him and bid him goodbye with a hug and a kiss on the cheek—too young.

The DJ took the mike. “Next up, the cowboy cha-cha.”

A slower dance. Harmony fanned herself with her hand and thought this might be a good time to grab a shot of Fireball chased with another beer.

She turned to leave the dance floor when a big warm hand rested on her shoulder.

“Wait. Don’t go yet.”

She turned. In the dark, the new cowboy’s face was obscured in the shadow of his hat. The DJ cued up an old Bellamy Brothers song Harmony remembered her father loved. It began, “If I said you had a beautiful body would you hold it against me?” She knew the words as surely as she knew her own name.

The dancers around them paired off in a hurry and got into the sweetheart position. Everyone counted off together and started around the massive dance floor in a counter-clockwise direction, all in time.

Before Harmony could say anything, the stranger took her hands and spun her. His movements were sure and strong. He was an experienced dancer, not someone who had to be babysat around the floor.

“Been a long time, hasn’t it?” he said.

She stole sideways glances at him. Tall and muscular, he wore a black hat and a plaid shirt with the sleeves rolled up. His forearms were thick and smooth. She could see that he had a strong jaw, a dark, short beard, and dark skin. He spoke crystal-clear English with a lilting Mexican accent.

“You don’t remember me, do you, Harmony?”

She stared.

A half-smile. “Guess I’m just another cowboy to you.”

For strangers, they moved in perfect rhythm. Harmony felt grateful that he was a strong lead since her brain was otherwise occupied with trying to figure out who he was. When he brought their bodies together, chest to chest, she looked up at him. His body gave off controlled strength and a smooth, unnerving calm. At last, she peeked under the shadow of his cowboy hat.

Dark brows. Bedroom eyes the color of whiskey.

No way. “Lucky?”

Forget chocolate and flowers. This homegrown honey is all the sweetness he craves.

Small-town life is nothing but a waiting room for eighteen-year-old honor student Corazón Gomez. Work and school leave little time for love, but with a full-ride Ivy League scholarship and a one-way ticket out of the boondocks, who needs it?

The answer appears on Valentine’s Day when her old cowboy crush ambles into the ice cream parlor where she works, inviting her to go on a late-night ride in his truck. For the first time she wavers between staying on the straight and narrow, and going off-road with the handsome heartbreaker.

After four years working on ranches all over the country, Caleb MacKinnon is back on the family farm helping out his mom and brothers while his father fights cancer. The one bright spot: smart, funny, and wickedly sexy Cora.

From the start, they both know this blazing-hot love affair can’t last. But when autumn comes and Cora has to leave for the East Coast, Caleb must find a solution to keep himself—and his heart—from falling apart.

Warning: Contains hard, cherry-poppin’ sex in a pickup truck and a cowboy charmer who talks dirty in two languages.

Ball-busting business woman meets no-holds-barred cowboy. He’s gonna need a longer rope…

Marketing hotshot Monica Kaur has put her big-city life on hold to help bail out her brother’s failing business. Now she’s got three months to plan and promote a rodeo, the first her tiny hometown has ever seen.

To ensure the rodeo’s success, Monica enlists a local hero, a rancher’s son who’s made a name for himself on the bull-riding circuit. Problem? She can’t stop daydreaming about the cocky bastard—and all the things she longs to do to him out behind the chutes.

Professional bullfighter Dean MacKinnon is home helping his family while his father fights cancer. Haunted by bad memories, jaded by love, Dean finds escape in a no-strings-attached go-round with brainy, sexy Monica, whose close-knit Sikh-American family would sooner run him out of town than see her with a notorious rodeo Romeo.

In private, Monica and Dean play as hard as they work. But as the rodeo draws near, that clean break they promised each other is getting more and more hung up in the rigging.

For eight years, Melody Santos played the game of love and lost—big time. Now she’s back in her tiny hometown looking after her younger sister, making ends meet with an assortment of odd jobs. When her childhood best friend hires her to help him sell his family’s grass-fed beef, the last thing she anticipates is falling in lust with the legendary, brown-eyed player.

To put his family’s cattle ranch back in the black, Clark MacKinnon has his sights set on big contracts—gourmet chefs and restaurateurs. If that means long hours traveling from farmer’s market to farmer’s market, Clark doesn’t mind. Particularly since his new assistant is his childhood crush, all grown up and sexy as hell.

One night in bed leaves them breathless and hungry for more. But when his love-’em-and-leave-’em reputation collides with her trust issues, Clark and Melody must face the truth about what they’ve become: not friends, not lovers, but players in a game that’s impossible to win.

Warning: Contains filthy banter, raunchy sex, excessive Johnny Cash references, and hundreds of pounds of raw beef.

PROMO Blitz: After the Happily Ever After by Anthony S. Buoni & Alisha Costanzo @TransmundnePres @RABTBookTours

Horror/Fantasy/Fairy Tale Anthology
Date Published: December 15, 2016

The happily ever after is never the end. Within these pages are more than seventy continuations, retellings, and eldritch stories that explore the dark forests, magical castles, and hideous creatures After the Happily Ever After.

Teasers

“Sweet Revenge” by Charlotte Bond:

The laughter had died and the rumours had grown when they'd found the third dead dog in two weeks; each one had been torn to pieces, the heart gone and the ribcage showing teeth marks.
Outside the cottage, in the dark night, a dog howled.

“Little Red Hunting Hood” by Mary DeSantis:

I halt halfway to getting my red cape off and hung on a hook by the door.

Budding beanstalks, grandma has a visitor. Grandma never has visitors, except for me, Mom, and that guy she met at the Elder Cottage Living group two months ago.

I strain to hear. Whoever’s back there is quiet, which means it isn’t the Elder Cottages guy, and of course, this is the one time Grandma keeps her voice low.

I hang my cape and go back to the basket.

Two sets of footsteps approach. Grandma enters the kitchen. Her white hair is in its signature bun, and she’s wearing her white dress with the red-check pattern.

“Hello, sweetie.” Her face wrinkles with a smile and stays wrinkled as she directs her a glare over her shoulder. “Oh, for giant’s sake, get in here. She doesn’t bite.”

“A Sleeve of Feathers” by Claudia Quint:

It all came crashing down when he found Geileis in bed, nestled between Dylan and Ailill, Oisin cuddling on the left and Ruari at her feet, with Emmet and Cian resorting to floor space when they ran out of room on the bed. Stephen dragged the brothers out one by one, pushing and pulling so they awoke with starts and cries, until she roused, confused and sleepy, to ask him what in the world he was doing.

“Like it's the most normal thing in the world.” Stephen contented himself by folding his hands to stop fiddling with the cuffs. “To sleep with your brothers and shut out your husband.”

“Step-Mother” by Deanna Smith:

My name is Cindy Charming.  I'm not, just so you know.  Husband is, but that's his gig, and if it makes me squeal and giggle and blush when he's pouring it on, that ain’t nobody's business but our own.  I sure as hell didn't spawn these three hooligans without some learned interjection from him.

We tied the knot ten years ago.  A fabulous fairy tale wedding, of course.  A little creepy when the in-laws asked how much torture I'd like to lay on my step-mother and step-sisters, but you've really got to hand it to them, they went all out to make sure I felt welcome to the fam.

“Raven, Rose, and Apple Pie” by Jaap Boekestein:

The wind pulls at my hair; my braids are all undone. I can see such a distance from the highest tower of the castle: yellow fields and darks woods, silver rivers and hazy gray mountains with white peaks. It is beautiful. Will this be the last thing I see before I throw myself from the window? What will I think during the fall? Will I feel regret, or fear, or freedom? Will it… will it hurt? God in Heaven, forgive me.

His song saves me. The sound of the lute reaches even the highest tower. His voice…
Beautiful.
A minstrel is at the gate, asking to be let in with a demonstration of his skills. He is young; he is handsome, wearing bright colors.

I step back from the edge.

       I have been saved.

“WITCH v. HANSEL, GRETEL, et. al.” by Daniel M. Kimmel:

So the question before us is one of balancing these two compelling but competing claims: Appellant Witch's insistence that any attempt to curtail or punish her actions would be an infringement of her religious freedoms under the First Amendment versus the desire of the Respondent class not to be baked and eaten.

While there is no precedent that is precisely on point, there are a number of cases that indicate a clear pattern.  One such case is Goldilocks v. Papa Bear, Mama Bear, et. al. 516 Goose 749 (1852). In this instance, Goldilocks was in the same position as the Respondents in this case, trespassing on private property while asserting a need that, as was so claimed, overrode any competing rights. In her tort action against the Bear family, Goldilocks asserted numerous injuries, such as from eating porridge that was “too hot” or attempting to sleep in a bed that was “too small.” Nonetheless, the court found for the Bears, upholding the ursine precept that “a bear's home is his castle” and that being a “cute child” did preempt the rights of the Bear family to the quiet enjoyment of their abode. Indeed, the defense raised by Goldilocks against charges of criminal trespass and unauthorized digestion are precisely those that are asserted by the Respondent class in the present action.

Excerpt:

A seed of a smile sprouted on Greco’s face and he stepped a little closer.

“Do you know what my wife said to me last time she saw you at this very airport? She said you were one of the handsomest men she’d ever seen. Not as handsome as me, of course,” he added quickly, evoking a grin from Edward. “But she said to remind you that your face wouldn’t break if you smiled once in a while. You’re wound up tight. Loosen up, son. Dismissed.”

Edward relaxed his posture but stood glued to the spot.

Greco took a few steps, but turned back when Edward didn’t follow. “What’s the matter?”

“I’m sorry I embarrassed you and the men. You’re right. I behaved badly and I have no excuse. I’ll try to control myself, sir.”

“Edward, may I speak to you as a friend and not as your commanding officer?”

He nodded.

“Look, I’m not saying you’re crazy or anything like that, but maybe you should see someone, you know, professional. You shouldn’t have to live a life of controlling yourself. Work on getting rid of those internal demons instead. Something is eating at you all the time. You don’t seem to enjoy life very much, and you should. Come on. Let’s go home.” Greco patted Edward’s back.

The men collected their gear and made for the door.

“I don’t suppose I could persuade you to meet my wife today, could I, Lieutenant?” Greco asked.

“Maybe another time, sir.”

“Need a ride, Lieutenant?” Jackson asked.

“Thanks, but my brother’s picking me up.”

“Hey, tell Hank we miss him. He’s a great guy, and the best demolition man the unit’s ever had.”

Outside, Greco dropped his duffel bag and kissed his wife passionately. Before she got in the car, she turned and waved at Edward. He returned her gesture with a nod and a quick flick of his hand. The major gave Edward an informal two-finger salute and slipped into the driver’s side.
