The Last Order
Release Date: 02/03/15
Rocket Circus Press

Summary from Goodreads:
Lana forms a secret order of women knights to fulfill her father's final request: find the queen who was thought to be dead and return her to the throne.

Lana Crewe is a strong, fiercely driven seventeen year old living in a village ruled by fear. With their king and queen both dead, strife and division have taken hold. Ruthlessly attacked by an Order called Talons, Lana's father is fatally stabbed. Before he dies, he imparts upon Lana a directive to save the statue of Saint Peter, and tells her that the queen yet lives. Now it is up to Lana to unravel the mystery of Saint Peter and bring an end to all of the war by finding the queen.

A medieval tale of hope and mystery, The Last Order is an action-packed story with one of the strongest female leads since Disney's "Brave." Not your average YA novel; The Last Order takes upper teenage angst and spins it on its head. You'll be gripping this book as hard as it will be gripping you.

Excerpt:
As we neared the doors everything seemed to move in slow motion and all the clatter of the railway station seemed to fall away, until there was only my heart pounding slowly, slowly, and three men, running toward us.

A hand grabbed at my arm. Dimly, I could hear Dad shouting 'Leave her alone, you bastards!'

I twisted, pushed. My hair flew into my eyes. Dad bounded towards us, tried to grab one of the men, but they sidestepped him easily, gracefully, as if they were dancing, and knocked him to the ground.

'Dad!'

He lay on the floor of the train station, groaning, and the crowd scattered.

'Come on, little girl,' said one. He had little flecks of gray in his hair.

He held my arm so tight.

Desperately, I shook my arms, my head, anything to loosen that grip.

Dad staggered to his feet but he seemed slow, so slow, and these men were strong. They half-dragged me back into the station, away from the doors. Weirdly, I felt really calm. Like I was cut off from everyone, like I was looking at people through glass. This isn't happening; it's not real, not real at all.

Whatever the reason for my new infatuation, some things remain constant -- like my love for: coffee (although sadly, it's now decaf); yoga; Luna bars (I am petitioning for them to bring back Chocolate Raspberry!); running in my neighborhood; Hemingway; Bukowski... and, above all, my husband and my girls.

Book Tour: Ignition: An Educator's Journey by Michelle Arrose @VBTCafe

Title: Ignition: An Educator's Journey
Author Name: Michelle Arrose

Author Bio: My name is Michelle Arrose. I am currently a teacher. I enjoy writing and completed a short-novel titled, "IGNITION" Throughout my entire life I have always felt inspired to write. I also am a strong believer in being a teacher advocate. If my novella could help educate people as to the hardships educators face today, then I would be extremely elated. This is my first novella and hope you enjoy it. I also set up a blog which is: marrose215.blogspot.com. Feel free to follow me as I continue to write many more literary works.

Book Genre: Fiction

Publisher:Authorhouse
Release Date:12/21/13

Book Description:

"IGNITION" is about a first year teacher. Karen Woolsworth who was given (in her mind) an excellent opportunity to work in a school and educate the young minds of today. However, little did she know that teaching led to her nightmare rather than her paradise. One troubled student, Kevin Connelly, becomes part of her obsession that she cannot focus on anything else. A teen that has a disturbing past. Kevin is a representation of the typical student that educators face every day around the world. Karen is left feeling alone in the world and fearing for her life with no support from administrators. Ms. Crowe, the Assistant Principal, is a woman who follows Karen's every move like a bird. Instead of a dove she becomes a vulture who eats away at the mental psyche and emotional stamina of Karen's well-being. The only salvation in this pool of chaos is Billy, her husband. However, he has difficulty relating and understanding the educational dilemmas which Karen faces. The constant struggles that Karen encounters to balance her life as a teacher and wife weigh her down daily. This book is a rollercoaster filled with emotional ups and downs until the ride ends. This novella is unique for its alternate endings and you get to choose exactly how Karen's ride ends.

Chapter 1

A New Journey

August 24, was a magical day for me. Not magical in the sense of wizards and sorcerers, but rather in the sense that I, Karen Woolsworth, landed my first teaching position.

I was so excited. I could not wait to go home and tell Billy, my husband, that all that hard work paid off. Two long years of rigorous graduate school, finally over. Taking all those teaching exams and suffering for hours with a proctor staring at you, sizing you up while tapping her pencil, and distracting your every thought when you needed to be in control at that time.

The day started out dreary. I woke up to rain. I spilled coffee on one of my suits and had to go to the interview in my navy blue suit and white blouse. It was not my favorite, but it had to do. I hoped that spilling coffee on my suit did not mean bad luck.

That morning, my curly dark hair stood as frizzy as can be. I felt like a cat that just had gone through a car wash. Imagine how he would look. Well, the spilled coffee delayed me a bit, but I raced for my interview as fast as a jaguar runs and I made it right on time. I was lucky that I did not get a speeding ticket. Billy would have been quite upset if I had. I also would have missed the job interview. Oh, what a shame that would have been!

When I arrived at West Street and Ninth Avenue, my nightmare began. There stood a lonely building called, The Charles Dickens School. This was a five-story building with fifteen-hundred students. The school consists of sixth through eighth graders. I was able to see that this was an old, musty building with no elevator. As I walked into the horrific huge school, I felt so small, but there was an aroma of endearing books, which made me feel quite elated. I was in awe. I grew up in the suburbs. I had never been inside an urban school. This was quite an adventure for me. I was so excited and nervous. As I walked up the three small steps, I was greeted by security, a man in a blue uniform. I gave him my driver's license as proof of ID and signed in. He told me to turn right at the first door and on the left was the main office. I would then have to meet with the principal. I thanked him and went on my way. As I walked down the long narrow corridor, I remember my heart was beating very fast and my palms felt sweaty. It reminded me of a first date, but much worse. The principal, Mr. Scott, a tall man with a mustache, asked me many questions. He started the interview in a friendly manner by shaking my hand and asking me if I found the school okay. At this point, I remember that his smile turned into more of a serious face, as if to say, "Let's begin."

He asked me, "What made you want to go into teaching?" I do not even remember what I answered him, but he must have been pleased with my response. During the interview, there was another person in the room as well. This person happened to be an assistant principal. She was on the large side with curly short blond hair. Her glasses hugged her ears tightly. She was the one who asked some tough questions. She had a poker face on the entire time and did not crack a smile once. Her name, I will never forget was Ms. Crowe. She reminded me of a spectacle-wearing shark staring at a guppy. I guess that you can guess who I was in that scenario: the guppy. I remember Ms. Crowe's last question was one of the toughest.

"How would you prepare your students for the statewide exam?"

I must have looked at them dumbfounded. I could not believe this question. I had just graduated from my master's program. I had never taught before. I did not know what to say.

At that moment, a magical thing happened. The principal's secretary came in and interrupted us, saying that he had an urgent call from his wife. He told me that I have the job. Naturally, I accepted the job with alacrity. He then excused himself. If I had had time to answer the question, I believe that I would not have gotten that job. He informed me that I would have to teach a self-contained eighth-grade class which meant that I would have to teach the same children throughout the day. My only hope at this point was that my students would be great and not horrific.

I thanked him and walked out of his tight, stuffy office, leaving him and the shark behind. As I walked out the door, I felt relieved that it was over and my teaching career would begin. The following week I would start and I could not wait. I was overjoyed that I felt like skipping down the block. However, in case the principal should glance out the window, I knew I had to maintain self-control and save that giddy emotion for when I got home.

Do the characters all come to you at the same time or do some of them come to you as you write?

When I begin my novel, I never know what or who is going to enter into my imaginary world. I love writing and have never pre-determined the characters within my novel. However, I generally make my mind up about my main character; his or her name, where she/he is from, what their personality is like, etc. When I started Ignition: An Educator's Journey, I pretty much knew my main character was Karen Woolsworth. I wanted her to have a husband, Billy and an assistant principal, Ms. Crowe. I also wanted her to have a stressful, challenging student, Kevin Connelly. However, all my other characters started to slowly come to life. I think it must be difficult to map out all the characters when writing either a novel or a novella. For me, I never know what is going to happen next. I think that is why I enjoy writing so much. I love to have the power to help characters come to life and when I am truly able to envision them, I know I have done my job. I only hope that my readers understand and have a certain emotion for my characters. I am currently writing Part 2 to Ignition: An Educator's Journey. I am not even sure as to what the title will be. I do have two to three characters set in my mind. However, I have no idea whom I am going to add into the Charles Dickens School. I am not sure which new characters will join the treacherous world of teaching. I look forward to creating new lives; new characters that I hope my readers will be interested in learning more about.

School is out and Lucy is ready for the perfect summer: lazy days at the pool, invitations to the most exclusive parties, and romantic dates with her hot new boyfriend. That is, until she lands in trouble one too many times and her parents issue the ultimate punishment: a summer job. Suddenly, the summer can't end fast enough.

To make matters worse, the job is painting houses with Justin, the most popular, egotistical guy in school. Spending all summer with Justin might be other girls' dreams, but definitely not Lucy's. After all, Justin is cocky, annoying, and a jerk. So what if he's the most beautiful jerk Lucy's ever seen? Or that his grin makes her forget she's mad at the world? Or that maybe, just maybe, there's more to Justin than Lucy realizes. Only one thing is certain: it won't be the summer she wanted, but it might be exactly the one she needs.

Popularity isn't everything it's cracked up to be. Justin Marshall knows this better than most. For the captain of the basketball team, small business owner, and son of Minnesota's next governor, life can get pretty overwhelming. But Justin can handle anything as long as he has Lucy, the girl who fell for the man he's trying to be.

But for Justin and Lucy, finding time together proves challenging. Stolen kisses and whispered promises just aren't enough. That is, until scandalous photos of the couple are leaked to a press intent on creating a juicy scandal during Justin's dad's gubernatorial campaign. And when Lucy becomes fair play for the tabloids and gossip pages, Justin does the only thing he can to protect her: he breaks her heart.

For Lucy, junior year is everything she hoped it would be: new friends, second chances, and a boyfriend she can't stop kissing. That is, until the boy she's pretty sure she loves chooses the life his family wants for him, over her.

Now it's up to Lucy to teach him what it really means to have everything. Because for Justin, being who everyone needs him to be just might cost him the one person he can't live without.

Effortless With You Excerpt:

Alex tugs on my arm. "Man, woman. Do you ever have a normal day?" He pulls me into a hug before giving me his signature pat on the back

I wonder the same thing.

The wind picks up again. I jump at the sound of abandoned ladders crashing to the ground. The oak tree gives another protesting creak as its branches bend above us.

"Alright. Call it." Justin yells. "Get your stuff and get home. Safely," he adds.

Everyone breaks away from the huddle, grabbing everything in their path. I walk over to my ladder, grabbing its edge. My fingertips and palms protest in pain as I swing it up and over my shoulder. I search for my paint can, finding it in the daisies which are now splattered with white paint. The roof's edge hangs above me where only moments before I'd been dangling. I can't help but shudder at the what-ifs.

The oak tree makes a popping sound, jolting me out of my state of shock and awe. I readjust the ladder over my back. The ladder seems so much heavier than earlier that day. I watch the guys in the distance effortlessly throw their ladders and supplies into Justin's truck bed. For the first time, I really do wish I was that large He-She-like creature that the senior girls called me. I could use the strength today.

I focus on Justin, climbing into the truck bed and surveying the supplies. The rest of the guys have taken refuge in their vehicles. Thankfully, the changing weather distracted everyone from my struggle. I don't want any more attention.

I dig my feet into the ground, determined to get my ladder to the truck on my own. I refuse to be lame and leave it behind. But the oak tree urges me to with every creek. It doesn't understand. I don't always want to be the damsel in distress. I need to do this on my own.

Sheets of rain pour from the sky. The sound is near deafening. I readjust my grip on the metal. My palm stings as if glass has cut me. The ladder slips through my palms, crashing on the sidewalk below.

I bend over, determined to do something right. Surprisingly, the ladder lifts with ease. I look up as Justin takes it from me, swinging it over his shoulder. He pushes me in front of him toward the truck.

Damn. I'm sick of being so hopeless and weak.

Boom. A cannon of thunder.

Justin throws the ladder in the tuck bed and pulls me around to the front. I reach up, grabbing the door's handle only to be rewarded with pain shooting through my palms. Red blood drips down the side of Justin's white truck.

Justin gasps as he reaches past me and grabs the handle, opening the door and lifting me onto the seat. White pellets fall on Justin's shoulders and it's like I'm stuck in a popcorn maker. Justin stands outside, oblivious to the hail and rain. He turns over my palms, searching for the cause of the blood. I look at my hands with the same curiosity.

My fingertips are scrapped and raw, already swollen and bleeding. Large calluses have been ripped from my palms. Small holes weep blood in their place. Two deep cuts are positioned on my right palm where blood seeps freely.

Justin removes his hands from mine. He takes off his shirt, pressing the wet cloth into my palms. I close my hands around it and focus on the white fabric changing red. The shirt stings but I hold it tightly. It's a good distraction from Justin's abs. The door shuts and a moment later the other opens. Justin slides in next to me.

He grabs my wrists, pulling my hands back in his. "Lucy, crap." Water drips down my face. I am pretty sure it isn't from tears. At least, I hope not.

The sirens blare and the wind gusts pick up. Justin swears, dropping my hands, turning the ignition and throwing the truck into reverse. The radio broadcast continues, "Severe Thunderstorm Warning In Effect."

"Thunderstorm warning? Look outside." Justin shouts at the radio. I glance through my window. Clouds swirl above us as Justin speeds away from the neighborhood. He pulls onto the highway. We're flying with a few other cars at over eighty miles per hour.

"That's a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Hennepin County." The radio voice reiterates. A siren blares from the radio. "Update: Tornado Watch in effect for West Hennepin County." I roll down the window for a clear view at the sky. The clouds drop lower, spinning in opposite directions above us. "Justin, the clouds…" Cars stop and drivers run down into the ditch.

The truck screeches to a halt with them. I turn, fumbling with the door's latch. "Forget it," Justin shouts over the wind. A bush blows past my window as he pulls me over his lap with one arm. He throws the door open, pushing me out of the truck and into the ditch.

Justin shoves me against the ground. I duck, covering the back of my head like they taught me in elementary school. I feel more pressure over my head as Justin's body presses over me. Two women scream as the sound of a train approaches. Cars scrape against the pavement and smash into one another. Justin's lies next to me, one hand over my head. The train drowns all noises.

I hold my breath.

Guest Post : What's in a Name? (Naming characters)

What's in a Name?

Hi! Thank you so much for having me on the blog. I'm thrilled to be sharing insight on how I named my characters in the Effortless With You series!

EffortlessWithYou LCharles_M9B_PerfectlyMessy_eCover_1800x2700 (1)

Naming my characters is very important to me. I put a lot of time and effort into it. I'm around the "naming" process all the time as a neonatal intensive care nurse. One of my favorite moments is when a parent whispers their child's name to them for the first time. Or helping them choose their names as they look at their little baby through the isolette. The moment the name is settled, it's magical. I can honestly feel a shift in the air.

Lion King Gif

The little life that I cradle in my hands just became a Robert Henry. How cool is that?

The same thing happens when characters of a novel are named. Here are the five steps I generally take when naming a character:

Five Steps to Naming Characters.

1. Choose the Vibe. Do you want it to be a modern name? An eclectic name? A classic name?

2. Hit up baby naming lists and blogs. Look at what's popular now and up to ten years prior. This is important to me as I absolutely want to connect with my audience, which are readers ages 13+ (we are all young adults at heart, aren't we.

3. Run said names against your own name prejudices you picked up from your schooling years. Noah is always a name I try to seriously consider for a main love interest but I can't make the leap--- not after playing cello in front of the most boogery Noah on earth for eight years. That's right. EIGHT YEARS OF BOOGERS. Yuck.

4. Take the name and run it by people that are dear to you. This is key when I choose my guy names. I'll tell my friends, "okay, this guy is supposed to be that frat-boy you hate." Together we'll play with my top names, perhaps tweak spelling and do whatever it takes to find a way to portray just that.

5. When it comes down to it, naming characters is like naming a baby. So what does that mean? Just name them what feels right once you meet them. Sometimes you actually have to start writing your characters before their name materializes. I've actually changed names out a few chapters in once I realized that my Tripp was actually a Beckett, etc.

So how did this add up to finding Lucy and Justin for Effortless With You and Perfectly Messy?

I named my characters the summer of 2010. I knew I wanted my female lead to be strong, a bit of a spitfire, but incredibly kind. At the time, I'd recently moved into a townhome association and was fascinated with this ninety three year old woman who lived across the courtyard named Lucy. This woman was up at dawn and went to bed past midnight. I don't think a week went by where she wasn't throwing a party for all the ladies on the block. Lucy was that type of person who made you feel like you were the most important person on Earth when she spoke to you. She was that amazing.

Old Lady

So, Lucy became my female lead.

And Justin? Well … I did all the baby name searches but when it came down to it, I had a small dose of Bieber Fever (please remember that this is 2010).

Bieber Fever

So, naturally, I named the love interest in my romance Justin. Thankfully, once I started writing, my Justin strayed far away from being even close to Bieber-ish.

Versions
(Blacklist #1)
by Megan Mitcham
Publication date: December 1st 2014
Genres: New Adult, Romance, Suspense

Synopsis:

The truth doesn't have versions. Or does it?

Rin Lee covered her childhood in dirt and danced on its grave. Only she pranced a little too hard and spent her young-adult life tiptoeing the straight and narrow. Things finally paid off in the form of a job with the Department of Defense, a home of her own, and a boyfriend muscled enough he put Zach Efron to shame. Until one text reveals a hideous truth that splinters her world.

Suddenly she can't trust Nate or their surrogate family of friends. Can she possibly trust Luck-the man who mirrors her soul, scares her beyond the neat confines she's erected around herself, and makes her scrutinize the versions she's always been too angry to see?

Luck turned to the streets out of necessity, while Rin slapped on blinders and ignored those willing to help her. A stupid move for a sultry young woman. But the skills she learned in the rough and tumble underbelly of DC will serve his latest assignment well. Because people like them have the instinct to survive.

Excerpt:

At the most swank eatery until le Diplomate a few blocks up, they passed an outcropping of glass framed in thick rustic metal and then turned right. Through the concrete entrance the hostess's practiced hands ushered them across the stone floor to their waiting friends.

"Rin!" Jen squealed, hopping from her smooth wooden chair. "Get out. I freaking love your hair. And that dress. Oh my God, are those Choo's?" The exuberant brunette fanned herself with Barcelona's extensive drink menu.

The crowd around them didn't skip a beat, caught in the din of their own merriment. This place did that and Rin was ready for some indulgence of her own.

"Perfect timing." Zack's green eyes shifted behind her, toward the kitchen.

Jen's breath caught and she leaned to the side, peering around the outfit she'd just gushed over. "Forget your Choo's and get a load of our waiter. Please be our waiter. Please be our waiter."

"They're called servers," Gregory chimed with his charismatically crooked grin. He stood, leaned forward, and planted a big one square on Rin's lips. She released Nate and wrapped Gregory in a fierce hug. "And these days they tend to sue when ogled too forcibly. So, no groping." He winked and set her back next to Nate.

"Lawyers," Rin mirrored her best friend's lopsided grin. "Always spoil the fun."

She and Nate laughed for the first time since the text, but none of their friends noticed. They all stared in unabashed awe at the person coming to take their order.

"I'm ready to pick a team and erect my flag in the dirt. This guy seals the deal. Gay all the way. Sorry, ladies, but this nugget of manliness has finally made a decision." Gregory smoothed his hand over the cream cable-knit sweater that hid his leanly muscled physique.

"Erect your flag or your dick? In the ground or our server?" Jen asked. "I have zero qualms about calling him a server because I'd let him service me any day."

"I prefer the latter." Gregory sat wide-eyed.

"Something's wrong with you two," Zach announced.

"But I don't see you looking away," Nate noted. "And I hope y'all know what you want to drink. Jen and Greg, your prayers are answered in three, two…"

Rin couldn't get over her friends' reaction to this guy enough to turn and look for herself. She needed this camaraderie to ease the sting of loneliness, even though Nate's beefy hand wrapped securely around her upper arm. The realization of the superficiality of their relationship-crazy text or not-raised the curtain and left her standing on stage in nothing but her sparkling personality.

"Evening, gentlemen. Ladies." The silken honey of the unfamiliar voice coated her nakedness in a soothing balm. The waiter cleared his throat. The low rumble vibrated very near her ear. "What can I get you, miss?"

She canted her head in his direction. Surprise smacked her square in the face. Smoldering bedroom eyes gazed into hers. The crystal blue orbs pierced through a strong brow and straight into her soul. Rin stepped back, stumbling over Nate's feet. A thud sounded her landing against her boyfriend's hard chest.

"Whoa, there," the waiter said, maintaining an invisible grip on Rin that made it impossible to look away.

Blond hair only a shade darker than her own sat in disarray across his forehead, but was shorn close around his ears. The hint of a beard hugged the strongest jaw she'd ever seen. Lips the perfect shape and fullness for hours and hours of kissing would have softened the blow his appearance delivered, if he'd only smile.

"You startled me," she said by way of explanation for her odd behavior.

"Wasn't my intention." He said the words, but his head ticked to the side and his eyes flared in a way that opposed them.

"What's your name, gorgeous?" Jen asked.

"Call me Luck," the waiter said, holding Rin's befuddled gaze.

Nate steadied her and shifted to place himself between her and the…her and Luck, but a massive party of suits poured in to their left. They crowded the walkway with banter and briefcases. The man screwing with her head-more than her shrink ever had-could have stepped to the side of the table toward Zach. Instead, he stepped forward, crowding her with his sharply muscled chest tucked neatly into a waiter's white button down. Chiseled forearms and lightly sun-kissed skin shown at his rolled sleeves.

Whether someone shoved him or he took a dive she wasn't sure, but his sinewy chest suddenly plastered her front. One arm wrapped around her waist, catching her in a subtle dip. His other shot out to the chair back to steady them. She swore she heard Gregory moan. Luck's muscles in action did something sinful to her psyche.

"Jackass, I'm not into threesomes," Nate blustered just behind her head. She'd see him, if she'd tear her gaze off Luck. But she couldn't.

Luck lifted his heavy blue gaze from her for the first time and squared it on Nate. "Me neither."
