Blog Tour + Review + #Giveaway: The Departed by Kristy Cooper @kristycooperYA @yaboundtourspr

The Departed
by Kristy Cooper
Genre: YA Dystopian
Release Date: July 6th 2016

Summary from Goodreads:

What if someone tried to fake the rapture?

When hundreds of thousands of people disappear in the middle of the night, including sixteen-year-old Gwen's best friend Lana, no one knows why. Some believe they were taken in the rapture, while others are convinced that it can't be true. Doomsday prophecies abound that involve horrifying tales of plague, famine, earthquakes, and more.

At first, Gwen doesn't know what to think. While she is busy mourning Lana, many people around her are getting taken in by the cultish True Believers Temple, including Gwen's dad and her friend Mindy. It is clear that more and more people are going to be pressured to join this church, as it starts taking over the media and the government, gaining zealous followers all over the world.

Then Gwen starts receiving emails from Lana. She claims to have been forced into hiding with thousands of others in an underground compound. Gwen is convinced the emails are real and the only other person who also believes her is Isaiah, her moody crush. Together they resolve to find out where everyone is hiding and help set Lana free.

My Review:

Gwen wakes up one morning and texts her best friend Lana like she does every morning but there is just one thing not right on this beautiful morning Lana doesn’t text her back. By the time she makes it to school she is becoming very worried. She hopes that when she gets to school Lana will be there and there will be some reason as to why she has not texted her back yet. But low and behold when she arrives at school and meets up with her other best friend Mindy guess what no Lana.

Mindy and Lana start to try to figure out where Lana could be and what could possibly be wrong. But they don’t get very far by the time they have to head to their first class. It is during first hour that she realizes that Lana is not the only one missing. She soon learns that there are thousands of people all over the world are missing. They disappeared during the middle of the night with no witnesses to the event.

By talking with Mindy and her friend Isaiah plus other classmates she soon learns that a lot of people are beginning to believe that the missing people were taken away in the rapture. Gwen and Isaiah just can’t believe this they are more out to believe that it was aliens than any rapture. Gwen and Isaiah start to question everything and everyone. Gwen is determined to find out what happened to her best friend and where she is.

One day Gwen wakes up to an email she received from Lana after she went missing. Gwen is ecstatic to hear from her friend and know that she is alive. So of course she is very excited to show it to Mindy and Isaiah. They think that it could be fake and that it could be from someone playing a joke or even a hacker. But Gwen believes that it is from Lana and sets out to prove it and save Lana. Is it from Lana? Is Lana alive? Where is she? Where are all the missing people? Where have all the people gone?

The Departed has been a very interesting and enjoyable read. I loved the plot and how the world could end. It is filled with so many twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. And it will grab you up on the first page and won’t let go until you have read the last page and still then it will hang on for a long time to come. If you have not read The Departed then let me suggest that you do today.

Genres: Paranormal, Young Adult

A BANSHEE.
A DEATH REAPER.
LOVE TRANSCENDING.

War is coming. The veil between the living and the dead no longer exists. Evil is running rampant and the universe’s symmetry balances on my fingertips. No big deal. Of course, nobody knows how or when the hallows will strike, or who among us is a traitor.

Hordes of vengeful spirits are multiplying by the minute, closing in ranks. Zane is poised to strike, but it’s going to take more than his killer instincts, more than swords and shadows to vanquish the hallows back where they belong. Stakes are higher than ever, yet I am determined to protect those I care about—to save the world.

Restoring the veil isn’t as easy as a snap of my fingertips. Nothing worth fighting for ever is. Friendship and loyalties are tested to the limit, sacrifices of unimaginable proportions are made, but in the end, all that matters is whether I succeed or fail.

EXCERPT:

“Zane,” I placed my hand on his chest, looking over my shoulder into the woods. The scent of death overpowered my nostrils, making them burn. “You better put on your superhero cape. We’re about to get some unwanted villains.”
He glanced down at me, eyes unfazed. “Piper, how many times do I have to tell you? I’m not the hero.”
My hands clutched his shirt. “You are to me.” Ice coated my insides. Hallows. They were approaching, fast.
The hardness in Zane’s expression softened. “Declan, I hope you’re ready to unleash your inner Chuck Norris.”
Declan cracked his knuckles. “I’m already game. Let’s use these assholes as dartboards.”
“Should I call—” …for backup, but it was too late. They were already here. A strange, almost prickling of anticipation twisted through me as the hallows emerged from the tree lines. Their eyes appeared first, breaking through the darkness like a dozen lanterns. They dipped and glided along the ground, coming straight for us.
I braced myself as the frightening hissing filled the air. The sight was jarring, and I was so glad to have Zane, Declan, and even Crash present.
The four of us were lined up in front of my car, the clearing quickly filling with the cold mist of the departed. “I love when people come back from the dead. Juices my zombie fetish,” Crash said dryly. “You up for this, cupcake?”

I remained in place, trying to control my inner turmoil and ignored Crash.
Zane, on the other hand, didn’t have my self-control. He pointed a finger in Crash’s face. “By God, if you try any funny business, I’ll kill you with my bare hands. And she’s not your cupcake.”
The sucky thing about being in the middle of nowhere…no streetlights. The only light we had was the measly bit of moonlight illuminating through the thick trees, hitting small sections of the clearing. I was going to have to rely heavily on my other senses and instinct.
A strip of darkness filled the center of the glade, and that was where the ghosts came from. Straight down the middle. As they drew closer, so did the scent of decay. It was a noticeable smell I’d never detected before, but as my banshee abilities strengthened, so did my other senses.
“Game on,” Crash said, and stepped out of his body, emerging a wolf. He let a howl, long and high.

Seventeen-year-old cheerleader Erin Hortz has been warned about the Angel Killer all her life. She never walks alone in the dark. She doesn’t talk to strangers. She doesn’t accept drinks at parties. All she wants is to finish her senior year with a win at the Miss Junior Queen of Hearts pageant, capture the perfect light over the lake with her new camera, and finally catch the attention of her best friend Nadia’s brother—former football star Dimitri Kuklev. Since his injury, they’ve been spending a lot of time together. And getting to know the real Dimitri—not the one she put on a pedestal in her diary is better than she could ever have imagined. And she’s falling hard.

Nineteen-year-old Dimitri’s injury brought him from football superstar with universities from all around the country knocking at his door to not knowing what he wants to do with his life. Taking classes at the local community college is supposed to get him back on track, but all he wants is to be on the field again. The only person who seems to understand him is the one he swore to keep in the friend zone: Erin. His sister Nadia’s best friend and the reason why he can’t keep a girlfriend. Between their early morning jogs, their time spent at the lake laughing, and their late night conversations, he’s having a hard time remembering why it’s such a bad idea.

But when Nadia doesn’t come home after a party, Dimitri and Erin know they must find her before ’s to late—even if that means risking their own lives and everything Erin’s ever known.

Virtual Book Tour + #Giveaway: Song of the Oceanides by J.G. Zymbalist @GoddessFish

Song of the Oceanides
by J.G. Zymbalist
GENRE:  YA Fantasy

BLURB:

Song of the Oceanides is a highly-experimental triple narrative transgenre fantasy that combines elements of historical fiction, YA, myth and fairy tale, science fiction, paranormal romance, and more.  For ages 10-110.

NOTE:  The book is on sale for $0.99.  Free for Kindle Unlimited Members or as part of Kindle MatchBook.

EXCERPT:

Blue Hill, Maine.
3 August, 1903.

From the moment Emmylou heard the song of the Oceanides, she recognized something godly in the tune.  As it resounded all across the desolate shoreline of Blue Hill Bay, she recalled the terrible chorus mysticus ringing all throughout that extinct Martian volcano the day her father went missing down in the magma chamber.
Aunt Belphœbe followed along, guiding Maygene through the sands.  “Why don’t you go play in that shipwreck over there?”  Aunt Belphœbe pointed toward a fishing schooner run aground some fifty yards to the south.

When Maygene raced off, Emmylou refused to follow.  By now the chorus of song tormented her so much that an ache had awoken all throughout her clubfoot.  Before long she dropped her walking stick and fell to the earth.  Closing her eyes, she dug both her hands into the sands and lost herself in memories of the volcano.  How could Father be gone?  Though he had often alluded to the perils of Martian vulcanology, she never imagined that someone so good and so wise could go missing.

The song of the Oceanides grew a little bit louder and increasingly dissonant.

Opening her eyes, Emmylou listened very closely.  The song sounded like the stuff of incantation, witchcraft.  And even though she could not comprehend every word, nevertheless she felt certain that the Oceanides meant to cast a spell upon some unfortunate soul.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW:

If you could apologize to someone in your past, who would it be?

I would apologize in a sardonic way to my various college administrators.  I would tell them:  “I’m sorry I ever came to your raunchy hateful rip-off of a school.”

If you could keep a mythical/ paranormal creature as a pet, what would you have?

I think it would be nice to have a talking tree—not like one of the disgruntled apple trees in The Wizard of Oz, but rather a very nice even-tempered philosophical tree.  That way not only could I sit beneath the tree and contemplate the meaning of life, I could actually consult the tree and maintain a friendly dialogue.

How do you keep your writing different from all the others that write in this particular genre?

I have a very simple unadorned style—something like that of ancient or medieval Asian poetry.  Perhaps because of that the tone is always rather wistful or poignant.  Tonally there is no spiritual violence or snarkiness or sarcasm.  My attitude toward my characters is similar to the way someone like Hans Christian Andersen felt about his characters.  I think I write this way because I’m so introverted and spiritual.  There is no one in the world more introverted and spiritual than me.  I know this because wherever I go, people always tell me I’m “weird.”

What are the best and worst pieces of writing advice you ever received?

Best:  Hire a published novelist to critique your work line by line.

Worst:  Go get an MFA degree.

Are the experiences in this book based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

Yes, of course.  I was a misfit in school, and one of the point-of-view characters is the very same.  Still, I try to put some humor into my fictional version of events.  This is why I stay away from memoir and social realism.  That sort of thing gets too depressing.  Life is more than just abject misery all the time, and writing in the style of magical realism helps translate one’s memories into a more balanced open-minded vision of the phenomenological world.

AUTHOR BIO:

J.G. Zymbalist began writing Song of the Oceanides as a child when his family summered in Castine, Maine where they rented out Robert Lowell’s house.

The author returned to the piece while working for the Martha’s Vineyard Historical Society, May-September, 2005.  He completed the full draft in Ellsworth, Maine later that year.

Book Blast + #Giveaway: Fighting Blind by C.M. Seabrook @chantelseabrook @GoddessFish

Fighting Blind
by C.M. Seabrook
GENRE: Contemporary Romance

BLURB:

Mackenzie Brooks is everything I've ever wanted.

Three years ago, she walked out of my life. No explanation. Just gone.

With the biggest fight of my career only weeks away, she walked back in.

I'll do anything to protect her. Destroy anyone who tries to hurt her. When it comes to Mac, there isn't a line I won't cross.

I've loved her my entire life, and now that's she's back I won't let her go.

She refuses to speak about the past, or the secrets I know she's hiding.

I know she's planning on running again. But when you love someone, you stay and fight. Even if you're fighting blind.

Excerpt:

“Hi.” Long brown hair rolls down her back in glossy waves. Soft, full lips that I’ve only dreamed of kissing open and close as if trying to decide what to say.

An explanation of where the hell she’s been for the past few years would be a good place to start.

“I…just wanted…” Her words come out in a stutter, and she tucks her hair behind one ear.

She’s nervous. Good. She should be fucking nervous.

I move toward her. The muscles in my jaw are so tight they feel like they’re going to snap. I can barely process the emotions that are slamming into my chest. But I can’t take my eyes off her. I’d almost forgotten how gorgeous she was. Hell, I’d tried to forget.

Eyes the color of caramel, with flecks of amber and gold, stare up at me with uncertainty.

Those eyes. They could pierce a man’s heart with a single look. And they had.

I’d have given everything for her. Would’ve sold my soul to the fucking devil just to please her. All she had to do was ask. Instead, she walked away.
