King of the Friend Zone

The King of the Friend Zone by Sheralyn Pratt

Esme Taylor has an amazing fiancé, a lifelong best friend, and a problem.

The problem stems from the fact that her best friend is named Hunter and, well. . .he's kind of (totally) hot. It's hate at first sight when her fiancé, Jon, and Hunter meet. Jon's convinced that Hunter is in love with Esme, and that Hunter must be out of the picture if their upcoming marriage is to succeed.

Esme thinks Jon is paranoid.

The truth is, Jon's not that far off. Hunter is in love with his best friend and always has been. What Jon has wrong, however, is that Hunter never had any plans of ruining Esme's happily ever after. Hunter wants what's best for Esme, even if that's not him.

When Jon pushes hard to end Esme and Hunter's friendship, opposition comes from the most unlikely of places. It's an eccentric lady with a cookie cart who suggests a different solution to Esme's problem: Hunter and Esme should give each other a chance.

They've both thought of the possibility over the years-of course they have. But with a ring already on Esme's finger and a heap of hurt feelings and broken trust in the mix, there hasn't been a worse time to explore the depths of their feelings for each other.

Both Esme and Hunter think it's time to move on and leave childhood crushes in the past. The question is: Can one woman and the taste of one cookie change their minds?

Excerpt

While everyone around Hunter ate and drank, Hunter swirled the liquid in his glass and watched his friends and family interact with Jon.

The man was suave when he wanted to be; Hunter would give him that. He wore the right suits, said the right words, and charmed the right people.

What a hero.

He was also several inches shorter than Hunter, which meant Esme fit neatly against his shoulder as they stood and spoke with all their guests. Esme looked so content as she reclined against Jon, and Hunter wasn't the only one who had noticed. The last person who had commented on Jon and Esme within Hunter's earshot had called them "two peas in a pod" as if there were awards to be won in the category.

Well, there weren't.

In that moment, Hunter was very glad he hadn't been drinking that night, because otherwise he might have gone so far as announcing that fact to everyone. There are no awards for being two peas in a pod, everyone. Oh, and by the way, you should meet this guy when he isn't trying to impress you. He's a bit of a prick.

But, of course, no one wanted to hear that. No one wanted to hear anything from Hunter tonight except for a glowing toast endorsing the golden couple.

He still hadn't written anything, although he had googled a generic speech and printed it out. It was in his pocket now, but he hadn't practiced it and reading the prepackaged speech was pretty much out of the question now, thanks to his dyslexia. Reading on the best of days usually didn't go that well for Hunter, but when he was seething mad?

Yeah, that wasn't happening.

So he sat and swirled and watched and tried to imagine what in the world he could say that wouldn't earn him more frowns than his jeans had already earned him.

Then it hit him: Why try? Why not be honest?

There wasn't a face at this party that he hadn't known for the better part of twenty years-well, except Jon. His smug mug was as new as it was unwelcome in Hunter's book. But everyone knew Hunter and they'd know if he vomited some fake, glowing speech their direction.

So why should he?

Why not be honest?

The idea grew on Hunter as the night went on and the praise for Jon became more and more abundant. The clincher was when Jon's best man stood up and gave a speech that proved he'd probably met Esme all of once, and everyone in attendance nodded and beamed as the guy praised Esme in the most generic of terms.

According to whatever the best man's name was, Esme was kind and compassionate and a joy to all those who met her.

Seriously? The guy had clearly never been within earshot of Esme when an ice cream truck passed in July playing Christmas music. That would redefine the guy's definition of "joy to all those around her." Yet everyone ooohed and ahhhhed and clapped until the guy sat and Jon gave his bestie an appreciative slap on the back with a look that said, Well done.

Then everyone in the future wedding party looked at Hunter expectantly. It was his turn.

In that moment, Hunter had a choice to make. He could either repeat the same lame puffery the best man had, or he could give the speech that had been building up in him like a sneeze all night.

Be nice now and freak out later, or let it all hang out? That was the question. And one quick glance at Jon's arrogant face gave Hunter his answer.

Author Sheralyn Pratt

Some describe Sheralyn as a girl who's been around the block and worked at every shop. This isn't far from the truth. Writing is what she loves most, however. There's a magical power in stepping into new perspectives time and again, and seeing the world through different eyes. Few things increase empathy more than walking in another's shoes for 100,000 words or so. At least that seems to be the trend so far.

Some random things to know about Sheralyn:

* She's a wanderer (geographically)
* She can write a novel, but doesn't have the attention span for one page in a journal
* She vehemently disagrees with Stephen King's stance that authors should not watch TV
* She is pretty much incapable of sleeping before midnight

Excerpt:

A breeze ruffled her ponytail and Riya's gaze snapped to the door. Courtney strolled in like a freaking Nordic Goddess with her head held high, cheeks flushed and skin glowing. Sunkissed legs stretched from a pair of sparkly sandals up for miles and miles until finally disappearing under the hem of low-hung white shorts. Flashes of smooth stomach teased as her pink top moved with every graceful step.

Riya's heart pounded in her chest. Courtney Chastain was trying to kill her. That outfit was a perfectly crafted murder weapon. Checking to make sure her mouth didn't hang open, Riya tore her gaze from Courtney and swallowed. Hard.

Beside her, Colt slid down the bench, away from Riya. Riya didn't know why until Courtney froze five feet from them. She glanced at Riya then shook her head at her brother. Colt rolled his eyes in response, patting the sliver of bench between them.

"Miss Chastain, please take your seat so we may continue," Bob Fazio called, a small chuckle breaking through his voice.

It was then Riya noticed she wasn't the only one distracted by Courtney's entrance. Excluding her brother, every boy in the room aged twelve to eighteen stared in their direction—and some of the girls, too.

Riya watched a wide range of emotions pass over Courtney's face in less than a second before she straightened her shoulders in some kind of resolve. Her hair tumbled to her elbows in gentle waves. Sighing, she tossed the golden strands over her shoulder before spinning and squeezing her hips between Riya and Colt.

The welcome talk continued, but Riya only caught fleeting fragments of the briefing. Something about the daily schedule and a talent show on the last day. Approximately 98 percent of her attention narrowed in on the seven inches of Courtney's white-silk skin pressed against Riya's outer thigh.

Riya took a deep breath to steady herself, but caught the sweet rose petal scent wafting from Courtney. She inhaled one deep breath, reveling in the heavenly smell, before shaking her head.

Ridiculous. She was being completely ridiculous.

She'd never let anyone have such an overwhelming effect on her. Certainly not someone like Courtney, someone who couldn't—or wouldn't—return her affections. Someone who had broken her heart four years ago and never once looked back.

Riya stared at her own shoelaces, actively un-focusing on the girl sitting next to her.

Trying to, anyway.

Next thing she knew, everyone stood around her and the room buzzed with conversation. The welcome event was over.

"Earth to Riya."

Teaser:

"What do you mean by adorable?"

Courtney bit her lip as a smile slid across her face. If Riya didn't know better, she'd think Courtney was teasing her. "Cute. Charming. Endearing." Her left eyebrow shot up in a suggestive gesture. "Kissable."

The word struck her like a flash of lightning. Riya's entire cardiovascular system froze for a second, before jump-starting into double-time. "Courtney," she warned. "Don't do this."

"What?" Courtney asked, her voice dripping with faux innocence. "This?" She reached a hand over and stroked a single finger from Riya's knee, up to her hemline. A line of fire flared across its path.

Read an excerpt from DEADLY GENESIS:

The laboratory downstairs contained the latest equipment, and they’d expanded it for Ilsa’s research. The Hamptons mansion doubled as their medical facility since Ilsa joined their quest for answers. Her relationship with Garrett Fox and the peace she brought him aside, she was an invaluable member. Her knowledge of neuroscience and the workings of their bio-mechanical chips continued to provide them with data crucial to the completion of their mission.
Saving the future.
The stairs shuddered under his feet, and Simon swung himself over the railing to land on the floor. The lab was in worse condition than the upstairs. The clean room remained thankfully intact. But blood sizzled in a toxic swirl on the table, the remnants of Ilsa’s research into Garrett’s abilities and her desire to help him control it—that room would definitely need to be sanitized.
Located on the far side of the laboratory, the door to Corkscrew’s room hung open, half melted and destroyed. A flash of light shot across and he barely had time to tuck and roll before pain crackled across his shoulders. He saw her, standing in the center of the room, her eyes open wide and wild. Agony twisted her features and her thoughts swirled like a hurricane, lashing against his shields.
Another blast shook the house. She wasn’t quite focusing the force of her abilities—thankfully. If she had, she would already have shattered a hole through to the sub-basement. Gritting his teeth, Simon tried to get a read past the entangled thoughts thrashing in her mind, but what humanity he could sense there remained deeply hidden. Instinct drove her, not reason. The pauses between her attacks lengthened and he waited for the next burst of fierce energy. Thirty seconds passed and a bolt shot across the room, turning a chair to slag.
Surging upwards, he launched himself right into the line of fire.
Twenty-nine…
She jerked and whirled to face him.
Twenty-seven…
He stripped off his gloves and seized her bare arms. Heat raged across her skin like a too hot cup of coffee, not quite scalding the flesh on his palms.
Twenty-five…
Power thrummed through her, but only sparks fell from the tips of her fingers. He tugged her close and jerked her chin up. He didn’t need physical contact usually or line of sight, but the blackness flooding through her damaged mind choked him.
Twenty-three…
Contact.
Amanda Kincaid. He punched her name through the tempest and drilled down to the glowing core he could see beneath the shadows. You’re safe. You must stop.
She struck him, kicking at his shins. While not as physically powerful as the other Boomers, her ineffectual blows couldn’t move Simon. He shunted past another electrical surge in her mind and darted through the tentacles of madness until he could cup his mental fingers around the spark of humanity.
Eighteen seconds…
Power built up in her, a cataclysmic surge of energy, and it wouldn’t be long till she reached overload. The research he did into her abilities suggested nuclear fission on a bio-chemical level—radioactive and dangerous.
Amanda Kincaid. He repeated her name, infusing the demand with a layer of request. Hear me. You are safe, but endangering others. You’re building to critical overload. You must stop.
The words barely penetrated the buffeting winds cycloning through her mind. The heat against his hands became almost unbearable. Three more times he tried.
Five seconds…
“I’m sorry.” He couldn’t risk another burst of her power. Closing his mental fingers around the spark, he cut off her autonomic functions. Her lungs didn’t work, her heart stopped, and she sagged like a broken doll whose strings had been cut. The moment unconsciousness took her, he released his grip and told her heart and lungs to function again. Cradling her close, he checked her pulse and blew out a sigh.
She still lived.

But if they couldn’t get her under control soon—he snuffed out the direction where that thought led.

NBTM + #Giveaway: Dark Deliverance by Tamela Miles @jackiebrown20 @GoddessFish

Dark Deliverance
by Tamela Miles
GENRE: Paranormal Romance

BLURB:

Elle Connor's life is as grim as she had always feared. Years of demon slaying have left her with nothing to show for her trouble. She's convinced a "normal" life was never meant for her.

Patrick Holt wants nothing more than to be away from the holy wars and has lived quietly for years as an average human. The trouble is that he's anything but average--he's a fallen hybrid angel.

When Tagas the guardian angel pairs them up to investigate the brutal slayings of young women in Los Angeles, Elle wants nothing to do with Patrick. As Elle and Patrick begin to understand each other, irritation is forgotten and fiery passion ignites between them. "No ties" is how they both live, but Elle soon begins to long for much more. As they become sucked deeper into the mysterious killings, Elle fears that, in this battle, Hell will win.

Excerpt:

She covered his phone with one hand, forcing him to look up. Her full lips curved in a gentle smile. “I see what Tagas meant by your superior wisdom and experience. I didn’t mean to come across like a badass demon hunter who knows it all. You hunted demons long before I was even born.”

“So, now I’m old? Thanks.” He clicked off the phone and set it beside him on the seat. Elle gave a chuckle.

“Let’s just agree that you have a glorious past when it comes to slaying demons that has given you certain…um, insights into it that I don’t have.”

Elle watched his expression change, his eyes focusing intently on her as he smiled. Her heart began to beat a little faster. She wasn’t prepared to deal with this other, blatantly sensual part of Patrick in such close confines and moved to make more space between them.
He moved with her until their shoulders touched. “I have insights into many other things. Would you like to hear them, Elle?”

The heat of his glance and the softness of his tone made her hyperaware, her skin tingling. She cleared her throat nervously. “Sure, go ahead.”

Author Interview:

Thanks for hosting me today! I always look forward to book chat.

1. What inspired you to write Dark Deliverance?

I spent the better part of last summer binge watching old episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I’ve always been fascinated with the lore of great hunters like Van Helsing. I decided to create a multicultural hunter who destroyed demons with special daggers and a pair of black stiletto boots because I couldn’t shake the image of her in my head and I couldn’t let her story go untold. The next thing that hit me was the idea to carry my demon hunter heroine, Elle’s, story into another story. From there, my Hell On Heels series was born. “Dark Deliverance”, #2 in the series deals with more adult themes, as Elle is now all grown up and ready (though she would argue!) for a real, lasting love in her dark life.

2. When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

I knew that I would be a life- long writer, published or not, when I was about age ten or so. By then, I had notebooks filled with scribbled down little stories and ideas for new ones.

3. What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

The earliest age I remember reading was around age five, with colorful children’s books. When my mom told me it was story time, I was always giddy with excitement. She would lay out books for me to read and help me with words I didn’t yet understand.

4. What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

I absolutely love horror and paranormal romance. I read voraciously when it comes to those two genres.

5. What is your favorite book?

I have so many but two of my favorites are Stephen King’s “Cell” and all of Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse mysteries.

6. You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

That would be Stephen King because he’s brilliant when it comes to the horror genre. He seems to know exactly what it takes to terrify readers and delivers that consistently.

7. If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

I would definitely time travel back into the 1990’s. That time in my life was magical – the music, the movies, the clothing. I do sometimes travel back in my mind when I hear a 90s song and it still feels as if it were only a few years ago, instead of two decades.

8. When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

Writing, for me, is never easy but I do little things to keep me motivated and inspired. I get the teapot going, turn on my boombox for musical inspiration, and just plow ahead. Working with a basic outline always makes writing a little easier.

9. Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

My sister has three dogs and when she visits, it’s enough pet love for me. I would love to have a kitten or a pup but I’m so busy these days. I definitely intend to be a pet owner one day soon because pets have so much love to share.

10. What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?

Pizza, sans all traces of garlic, is my favorite. Next in line, is Southern style barbecue. Yum!

11. Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

My piece of advice is to avoid distractions when you’re writing. Learn how to pace yourself with breaks but keep your bottom in that chair until you’ve met your daily goal.

Thanks for talking with me today!
