Excerpt:

His dark locks fell into his eyes, and he pushed them aside. “We don't have much time. I need your help, Willow.”

Lil's eyes narrowed. “It's Lil,” she said, correcting him. “Why should I help you? Why should I even go with you?” She stood beside his car, her heart thumping in her chest as she crossed her arms.

“Jamey's in trouble,” Rawlie said.

“How do you know my sister?” Lil’s eyes narrowed.

“We don’t have much time.”

Lil was torn in two. She shouldn't go with Rawlie, but the thought of something happening to her sister was even more terrifying than any gruesome scene she could imagine landing in herself. “What happened?” She looked back as the main door to the school opened and the principal came outside to the lot. It was now or never. If they waited any longer, he'd be wondering why she wasn't in class.

“If we're leaving, now would be a good time.” Rawlie jumped into the car, not bothering to open the door. He unlocked the passenger side and Lil pulled the door open, glancing back at the principal before getting into the car. A moment later, Rawlie sped off and away from Twain High.

The drive was like nothing Lil had ever experienced. She secured her seatbelt, tightening it as much as possible. The wind burned against her flesh, tearing at her skin worse than the most painful sunburn she’d ever experienced. The forest shifted in waves around them. She opened her mouth to speak, to ask what was going on, but the words didn't come. The forest grew darker the faster they drove. The trees billowed overhead and though it was spring and there had been leaves on them, the dark forest looked dead. Lil glanced back behind them, seeing a shift and a ripple, the same odd glimmer she'd seen when Rawlie first appeared outside the school.

“Where are we going?” Lil choked out, gasping for air. A bird swooped down just above her head and she flinched, swatting it away. She’d never liked birds, and she definitely wasn’t a fan of ones with large, sharp talons coming at her face.

“Yeah, I don't like birds either. Getting to Orenda through the forest isn’t an easy drive. It’ll be okay.” Rawlie moved an arm to cover and protect Lil while he drove with the other.

“How is any of this okay?” Lil’s eyes widened with alarm as the dead trees closed in on them. The roar was as deafening as a lion's, causing the windshield to shudder and her heart rate to quicken. From a distance, she could make out the faintest hint of pink light streaming in from the edge of the forest. She doubted they'd make it in time. The forest was swallowing them whole. “I want out!” she screamed, fear overtaking her.

“If we stop, we're both dead.” Rawlie didn't let up on the gas. He pushed the pedal harder to the floor, his arm protecting Lil from anything that might attack as they narrowly escaped the forest. He should have put the top up on the convertible before they left, Lil found herself thinking. A moment later, they reached the clearing and Rawlie put both hands back on the steering wheel as they came to an abrupt halt.

How to write a Book Review:

Do your best not to rehash the entire plot. Unlike when we were kids and had to write book reviews for school, a book review should be focusing on the writing, not every plot detail.

So, don’t give away spoilers. No one wants to read your review to know what happens at the end of the book. Let someone else read it and be surprised (or not surprised if it’s predictable). Either way, it’s better to focus on other criteria.

These are a few things that I consider when writing a review for a book.

How was the book paced? Did it start fast and then drag? Was there not enough information in the beginning that made it difficult to understand?

Could you relate to the characters? Did you connect with them? Did you care if they died or would you care? Was there a character that really irritated you? Were they supposed to?

How was the writing style? Did it stay in present tense the entire novel or jump around? What about point of view? Was there head hopping?

Who would you recommend the novel to? Is the book appropriate for a specific age group? Be sure to include what age group if it’s young adult.

Excerpt:

"Stay. Just…. Stay." The second I said it I felt awful. What was I asking? I knew he couldn't stay, that he needed to return to his world to stay alive in mind.

Since the night of the dance we'd carefully stayed away from discussing our little predicament. We were still at a standoff. He couldn't live in my world without magical aids to keep him alive, because of the toxic nature of our polluted air, and I couldn't go back to his world, because of a bunch of angry beings trying to kill me. That left us here. He would have to return to his world and refuel, to come back to mine. How long the potions lasted depended upon how much stress he was under. Physical exertion, extreme emotions all used up the reserve more quickly. Then there was the issue of his still being tied to Venus, the daughter of the ice witch I killed. A curse had caused his forced fealty to her. Killing the witch was not only supposed to save Mythlandria from her destructive wrath, it was also supposed to free Adrius of the curse that bound him to the ice witch's commands. Who knew there was a daughter who would take over the bonds, and that she was also his ex-girlfriend.

Now she wants me dead in payment for killing her mother, and as a bonus, I'd be out of the way so she could get Adrius back in her life. That he could come here at all means the curse is weakening. I want his freedom, but at which price? Was I willing to kill for it? I'd have to end her life as well if I was going to destroy the bonds. And I wasn't a killer. Even Oct?hvia's death was more of an accident than intended. I had no idea what awakening the magic would do, or how to wield it. This arrangement seemed like our only option, for now. And while I hated to see him leave, there was something comforting in being able to pretend that my life was normal again. As normal as it ever was. I could enjoy being back home with friends and back at school which surprisingly enough, I'd missed. It's amazing how coming to the edge of your life multiple times will make even the most mundane routines a welcomed change.

"Think about what you're asking me," he said. "You know why I have to leave."

He watched me suck in a breath of regret, as I wished I could take back my self-serving plea.

Pain creased his eyes. "Sleep soundly, Lorelei," was all he said. He kissed the top of my head and turned to go.

The tense set of his jaw revealed the effort it took to leave. I watched him walk away, biting down on my lower lip until he reached the driveway.

"How am I supposed to sleep?" My voice was almost too quiet to be heard over the howling wind. But his hearing surpassed most mortal's.

"Warm milk with honey works well," he answered my whisper, his back still facing me. "It helps with the night terrors too," he added.

"You know that's not what I meant." I moved closer, descending one step at a time until my bare feet hit the cold of the pavement.

Adrius froze. Electric pulses crackled between us.

"I was talking about sleeping without you. Here."

"You've managed to do it before," he said cautiously, the strain of his resolve vibrating in his voice.

"I know. But-"

This was wrong. It was selfish. How could I ask him to stay, when I know that leaving is what would keep him alive to return to me?

"I'm sorry. I'm being silly. It's just I can't-"

With whipcrack intensity, his resolve burned away and he rushed toward me and pulled me into his arms. His touch burned though my shirt as his hands splayed against my back, pressing us closer. He kissed me, hungrily at first, then it quickly deepened to ravenous.

Matching his fervor, I tangled my fingers in his hair. Every inch of me was on fire. He gasped, his lips slowing against mine. By the time we separated, we were both breathless. He leaned his forehead against mine for a few rapid heartbeats, then pulled back. Our eyes remained locked in a palpitating stretch of silence that spoke volumes. My head swirled, and all I wanted was more of where we'd left off.

But he read my intentions. The corners of his lips quirked and he shook his head. Warm hands slid down my arms with one last caress, before he disappeared. Gone so quickly I didn't actually see him leave. Swallowed by the darkness of the night and the forest that held the secret doorway into Mythlandria.

Please tell us about yourself using 3 verbs, 1 quirk and a pop culture addiction

3 verbs: Reading, creating, laughing.

1 quirk:  You seriously expect me to narrow it down to just one?  I think I’m 20% water and 80% quirks.  Let’s see...I always wash my hands after touching shoes.  (C’mon, shoes are just gross.  And I never said I wasn’t neurotic.)

A pop culture addiction:  Anything to do with music, past and present.  Trying to list all the bands would probably crash my hard drive.

Top 5 Favorite Things

Books, snuggles with my kids, cozy pajamas, my iTunes music library, and peanut butter.  Preferably all simultaneously.

What’s the last song you listened to?

I’m pretty much never without tunes.  I’m currently listening to “Nightwatchmen”, by Bell-X1.  Thank goodness you can’t hear me singing along.  (Trust me, you’re just as relieved by that fact as I am.)

How do you come up with novel titles?

I usually wait until I’m at least a few chapters into the story, and then I start brainstorming for something that feels right.  I typically have a list of about fifty names to select from, before I finally choose the right one.  Even so, I usually make up my mind by about the halfway mark.  My current WIP doesn’t have a final name yet, and it’s kind of killing me.

This or That-

*Paranormal or Dystopian?

Either one.  Even better if it’s both simultaneously.

*Morning or Night?

Night, night, night.  Mornings should be illegal.

*Vanilla or Chocolate?

Peanut butter.  (If you insist on giving me vanilla or chocolate, either will go fantastically with my peanut butter.)

*Summer or Winter?

Summer!  If mornings are illegal, cold weather is a felony.

Excerpt:

My head is still pounding when my eyes flutter open the next day. My brain is throbbing inside my skull and I punch the pillow underneath me, scaring Jinx out of his slumber. He meows in protest before hopping off the bed. Looking around, I’m in my bed. How did I get here? I groan in pain as I prop my pillows up and lean my head back against them. It’s then that I feel the eyes on me. Tilting my head straight again, I glance out my window. My eyes lock with those big brown eyes of Jared’s across the way. He looks down to his phone and back up again. My phone chimes with an incoming text.

“UGHHH!” I moan, blindly reaching for it. It slips a few times before I grasp it between my fingers and look down to read.

How are you feeling?

Closing one eye, I text back, Like someone ran over me with a truck, then backed up and ran me over again.

Lowering my phone, I watch as he smiles from my text and disappears from view. I’m trying to piece last night back together; it’s like a fragmented mirror that has shattered all over the corners of my mind. I remember laughing with Ro about her sexual conquests and then I remember red and blue lights and… Jared. Starting to feel hot, I throw the covers off of me and lay like a starfish, trying to get my mind to focus. Glancing down, I notice I’m wearing my pajamas. Before I can process any further, the door to my room creaks open. Jared walks in with a cup of water and a closed fist.

“How did you get in?!” I yelp, trying to sit up in bed, and pulling the covers back over my braless tank top.

“I left the back door open when I left last night,” he informs me as he opens his fist to show me he brought a hand full of Advil.

“You brought me home last night?” I rub my head before reaching for the pills and water.

“Yup, after you called me to pick you up from the police station.”

“I WAS WHERE?!” I scream as water comes spraying out of my mouth.

“Police station. Apparently, you popped a guy in the face.” He smirks.

I squint my eyes, vaguely remembering the heavyset guy that tried grabbing my ass in front of the bar.

“Whoa!” I have to lean my head back against my pillows when the information begins to become too much for me. “If you took me home, how did I get into pajamas?!”

The smile that crosses Jared’s face is a mixture of a blush and a sly smirk that makes my insides twist with anticipation and excitement. “Jared…”

“That… you did on your own. I had nothing to do with that!” He holds his hands up in surrender.

“What? I just stripped in front of you!”

“Well, once you got your shirt off, there was really no stopping you…” he teases and my eyes widen in embarrassment.

“Oh my God!” I slump down, pulling the covers back up to my face. “Did we… ya know…” I mutter, completely mortified now.

“Uh, that would be a no.”

“Oh, thank God!” I sigh.

“Thanks a lot!” He comes to his feet now, turning to look out the window.

“Not like that, it’s just … I don’t like to do things I’m not conscious for.”

“Yea, completely plastered girls that get arrested and throw up in bushes are really sexy!” His voice drips with sarcasm.

“I threw up?!” This just gets better and better.

“Twice.”

“Twice?” I’m mortified, staring at his amused face.

“Well, after the first time I thought maybe you needed something to eat.”

“Oh no…”

“Yeah… I’ve never seen someone eat a Big Mac that fast before…” He stares at the wall as if remembering my weak moment.

“Oh my God!” I groan, throwing the covers over my entire body. I curl up in a fetal position, planning to never come out again. The room grows silent. It’s starting to get hard to breathe under the sheets when I feel the mattress by my feet cave slightly.

“Come on, it’s not that bad. We all have our moments.” He pats my feet through the sheets.

“Just when I think I’ve reached rock bottom, things just seem to drops out from under me and I’m at an all new low!” I roll over, trying to pull the covers with me, but Jared’s weight prevents it. My head comes peeking out as I roll over, facing away from him.

“April, I think I just determined your major.”

“What?” I curiously twist to look at him again.

“Drama. You’re such an actress. Now, put your big girl panties on and get up!”
I stare at him for a second; did he just say what I think he said? He waits about two seconds before getting up and opening a drawer to my dresser. “Are they in here? Nope!” He closes it and opens another.

“STOP!” I scream, stumbling out of bed, horrified.

“How ‘bout this one?”

“Okay! Okay! I’m up!” I slam the drawer closed just in time to save myself further embarrassment when Jared eyes my plain old undergarments. I sigh when the pounding in my head launches my stomach into action and I collapse onto the corner of the bed.

“You okay?”

“I refuse to puke again!” I respond, taking another deep breath. “Jared…”

“Yea…”

“I could use some donuts.”

“Okay.” He pauses for a few seconds, looking down at his feet before adding, “I’ll be outside then.”

And he leaves me alone in my room.
