Virtual Book Tour: SHAPE OF THE SUN by Paula Onohi Omokhomion @pumpupyourbook

This isn’t a love story. It is just what happens when logic fails.

Title: SHAPE OF THE SUN

Author: Paula Onohi Omokhomion

Publisher: Independent

Pages: 776

Genre: Literary Fiction/Family Drama/Contemporary Romance

Format: Kindle

In a world where novels defy conventions and heroes defy expectations, Shape of the Sun dares to ask: What if the one at the center isn't kind? What if no one is misunderstood? What does it mean to be the hero or the villain?

Beware: this is not a love story. The author just likes meta-fiction a bit too much.
Rajkumar 'Raj' Reddy is top-tier Male Lead material. And a freaking DRAMA KING.

He is a gorgeous, disgustingly rich, and ultra-confident Child Abuse Pediatrician. He's also emotionally finished, a narcissist, and a scammer all but in name.

But what did it matter if he was soulless or morally bankrupt? Why should anyone care that he married someone only because of their money?

He was the Male Lead, right? Since when were Male Leads ever held accountable?

And then he falls in love. Utterly useless. Very, very unnecessary. Annoyingly delicious for someone as self-aware as he is.

Raj knows he's in love. He knows it every second he smiles when she talks to him or says good morning Rajkumar, in that sweet voice he dreams about more often lately.

So now, our Male Lead is on a mission to GET OUT OF LOVE.

This relationship holds too many green flags!

Painful. Also doesn't allow him to be hypocritical for more than three seconds. Horrid, really.

And in the background is the Reddy family. It's not an easy home. It's never been easy with all that power and wealth involved. There's too much scheming and engineering in one place.

There's an overlooked half-brother that literally descended from hell, a sweet twin sister that has more than her fair share of buried grudges to Raj (and vice versa), and a patriarch that might be loving father and enabler all rolled into one.

There are traumas that our Male Lead wants to never remember.

You see that's the thing about Romance with Accountability. It can be sweet. It can be deadly.

Will our Male Lead manage to protect his secrets and secure the inheritance, or will his deepening emotions force him to confront his inner demons? Can greed truly give way to love? Or is that just something we only see in the movies?

Will he finally go to therapy?

A gripping tale of love, family, the high stakes of inheritance, and the journey to self - Shape of the Sun explores what happens with leads in a world where the rest are left to silence.

Read a sample here.

Shape of the Sun is available at Amazon, Kobo and Apple Books.

Adrift

Rajkumar woke up in the dead of the night. He could hear his own breathing, loud enough to deafen his ears. Or maybe it was the thumping of his heart that he could feel pulsating from his throat.

He had been awake for ten minutes and paralyzed on the bed, the darkness affixing him to the bed. It pressed upon him and made his vision flash black and white, reminiscent of what it did that terrible night.

He was afraid. He didn't know what to do.

Thump. Thump.

Those were Eloise's footsteps. No, it was his heart galloping like a deer caught in headlights. It wasn't. It was. It wasn't.

Rajkumar scrambled for the bedside lamp and pressed down so hard, the sound went thud against the walls of his heart. But he didn't care. He didn't have the capacity to, tender mind on autopilot, racing away from the demons that found their way in and built their nest.

The light gently flooding the room put them to rest. But it was only for a while. He could hide from those demons, ghosts of the days past, but not from himself.

The standing mirror on his far left was telling.

Rajkumar couldn't recognize the boy that he saw there. So similar, yet not. He had lost so much weight in just a few days. The boy in the mirror was disheveled, eyes reddish from crying, a litany of tears and mucus running his face that he hadn't even realized was there before, hollow like there was no life in there, and bones jutting out every part of his body, their sharp angles pronounced.

Perhaps they'd cut him from within. They would cut him like he wasn't already cut. Or perhaps, he wasn't cut. Not just yet. He was only crushed, shattered, trampled upon, that type of thing.

Rajkumar tried to smile. He pressed fingers to the corner of his lips and forced them to a curve all the way up. He tried to smile, a proxy for happiness.

But as it turned out, he couldn't even do just that. His smile came out uglier than crying, a proxy for the bottomless sadness inside of him. His eyes followed suit and released their torrent, so that he choked on his sobs, all the while careful not to be too loud. He silently cried in that corner of his bed, hands pressed to mouth.

The darkness scared him. But the light scared him even more.

He was lost, hopelessly lost at sea, drifting without an anchor, waves tossing in a battle for his soul. Rajkumar thought he was losing.

Review: Divided World (EMP Aftermath #4) by Grace Hamilton

Divided World

EMP Aftermath #4

by Grace Hamilton

Published: August 10, 2022

Genre: Dystopian, Science Fiction, Post-Apocalyptic

Blurb:

They went looking for their daughter. They found a civil war…

Laurel and her husband Bear are finally reunited. But South Minneha Hospital is no longer the haven it once was. Together, they take on a new quest: leaving the hospital behind, and setting off to find their daughter, Mae.

Accompanied by Trent and Jess, Laurel and Bear leave the safety of Minneha and begin their search, knowing only that Sergeant Mae Petersen was serving in the US Army when the EMP hit. The Internet is just a memory, and phones are now quaint relics. Finding out where one soldier was stationed—and where she might be now—will take a miracle.

Laurel is up for the challenge, but the world changed while she was fighting to save South Minneha. Roving bands of gunmen have given way to organized paramilitary groups. The land she and her companions must cross is contested by two factions, the Militia and the Freemen. Tensions are rising, lines are being drawn, and one fact is painfully clear…

If Laurel and Bear are to reunite their family, they’re going to have to fight.

My Review:

Divided World resumes right where Dangerous World concluded. Laurel, Bear, and Trent depart from Minneha Hospital to search for their daughter, Mae, who is serving in the Army. The Snow is behind them, making their trek somewhat easier.

Mae and her unit have left their base, but she is unaware of their destination, as her captain refuses to disclose that information. He insists it’s a need-to-know situation. Mae soon realizes they are en route to another depot to confront the Freeman.

I have doubts about Mae’s captain being the upstanding individual everyone believes him to be. I suspect he has been concealing his true nature. Now that the world has essentially collapsed, he is gradually revealing his authentic self. It seems Mae is starting to uncover who he really is.

Divided World is a thrilling read that kept me captivated as I followed Mae, Laurel, Bear, and Trent on their paths toward one another. Mae has been contemplating searching for her father and then her mother, but she cannot abandon the Army yet, as she is not willing to be labeled a deserter.

Divided World is just as enchanting as all the previous installments. It's an incredibly gripping read that had me racing to the conclusion, unable to flip the pages as quickly as I wished.

From the moment I started reading Divided World, I was enthralled by its numerous twists and turns. I eagerly anticipate diving into the next book, Collapsed World, to discover what happens next and what lies ahead for Laurel and Bear!

I wholeheartedly recommend Divided World to all fans of dystopian fiction! Be sure to get your hands on a copy of Divided World today!

EXCERPT:

He drove straight out onto the runway of the small airport, then came to a stop next to another police cruiser with its lights off, a big black Lincoln Navigator sat at the base of an impressive private jet. The stairs were down and the light inside glowed behind the sheen of the early morning mist. A peach illumination in the distance reminded me how much I hated sunrises these days.

I used to love them. Seeing a sunrise meant I’d spent an entire night with friends and lovers talking and partying all the way to the next day. It meant I was living, really living. Not waisting too much time asleep but being awake and free to create music and memories. That was long ago. Three lifetimes ago. Now it meant I couldn’t sleep. That the memories kept me awake. That I was still living and forced to be a functioning human. I was surviving enough for my daughter and her insistence that I stay in her life, when she wasn’t mad at me. And the music, always the music, but other people’s music. Not mine, never mine. “Alright.” Kurt met me at the top of the stairs. “Now, this is strictly confidential. I’ve had explicit instructions to deny any goings on here for the safety of the passenger,” he stated gravely.

“What in the hell are you talking about?”

He used to work for Bernie and Sandy when they lived at BernSand full time. But they let his crew go when they left on their cruise and Kurt wasn’t too happy about it. I wasn’t sure why he was involved with this mystery person or who was paying him.

Kurt turned his bulky body sideways and placed his hands on his hips. My view of a heap on the floor in the middle isle of the plane was still slightly obscured by his massiveness. I pushed past him to get a better look. I’d seen women passed out on the floor before, maybe too many times to have any strong emotions about it. I only wanted to know who it was that was so important that the police needed my sorry ass in the middle of the night.

“I’m not sure how many of these she took,” The airplane captain in his white uniform held out a prescription bottle to me on the far side to the body. I didn’t take it. I needed to see who the woman was.

I knelt at her bare feet. She wore ivory silk pants and matching blouse, almost like pajamas making her look ethereal in the way she lay on her side like a Botticelli painting. Her dark hair lay across her face. I heard a gasp from Stewie when I brushed the hair way from her face. The bandage across her forehead and large yellow and purple bruise on her swollen cheek almost made her unidentifiable, except for the dark beauty mark next to her right eye, long luscious lashes, and full pink lips.

I looked back at Kurt. “This is Shay Lazar.”

In 1970s and '80s Detroit, the city wrestles with an unending economic downturn, increasing violence, and white exodus to the suburbs. Amid all of this is twentysomething Mary who is just trying to grapple with her identity in a world filled with uncertainty.

In this collection of linked stories, we follow Mary as she seeks to cope with and withstand hardship and confront her fears of exploitation, abuse, and death. Along the way, she delves into the complex yet nurturing relationships with her family and friends who teach her to love better, live fuller, and question power. The Patron Saint of Lost Girls presents an unflinching tale of life in the late twentieth-century postindustrial Midwest.

Excerpt

“AUGUST, WHEN the cicadas burned and the lawnmowers sounded like industrial bees, we couldn’t stop. In the bedroom, on the couch, on the floor. Afterward we would lie there, reading the paper or letting the television taunt us like a car salesman. Paul would wiggle his toes against mine, and we’d look at one another for a long time. His face was like a catcher’s mitt, warm and beaten. He reminded me of one of those boys who had moved away when I was little, but Paul had returned a man.”

-“This is Art”

Excerpt:

Mita tugged at his hand, her voice almost a command. “Sit down. You’re not going anywhere.”

Doing as he was told, Manush smiled sheepishly. “I really didn’t mean it about Bijuda.”

It’s alright, I understand.”

Mita was still holding his hand. Manush pretended not to notice, but a tingling feeling was moving up his elbow and up his arms. He stole a glance at her. She was so strong…so decisive, so herself! He wished he were like her.

I didn’t know you worked a lot outside college?” Manush wanted to keep up the conversation.

Work…?” Mita was startled. She slowly let go of his hand and murmured absentmindedly, “Sure, it’s work…a lot of work!”

Manush watched as her face broke into a torrent of emotions. She was biting her lips. Something was tearing her apart.

Manush did not know what to do or say, but he felt he must. He gently touched her hands. “It’s alright! Everything will be fine.”

Suddenly, Mita looked at him intensely. “What will be fine? Do you know what you’re talking about?”

Still holding her hands, Manush shook his head. “No, I don’t. Wish I did.”

They sat in tense silence, holding each other’s hands, until Mita broke the silence. “Can you keep a secret?”

Manush nodded, “Upon my life…”

I don’t expect an answer, but I just want to ask somebody, anybody…”

Sure.”

But you can’t question me back…”

Agreed.”

And keep it a secret. Or else, both of us will be in deep trouble.”

Once again, Manush nodded.

Mita hesitated awhile, then asked, “Have you ever seen a man die…actually being killed?”

Before Manush could react, she went on, “Did you ever watch the quivering of the eyelids as they close forever, lips pursing up as the soul departs, blood trickling down the chest as breathing stops?”

Mita’s eyes were frantic, roving all around his face like one possessed. “Is it okay to kill somebody?”

For once, Manush was firm, “No, never!”
