Forward by Spencer Christian

As a young child, I was much like the little girl in this book - intensely curious about the wonders of the natural world - asking questions such as those put forth by young Gabriela, "Why is the sky blue; why are leaves green?" My search for answers took me on a fascinating path of discovery, which eventually led me to become a national TV weather forecaster.
If the child in you - or a child you know - finds the world to be a wondrous place, your path to discovery can be found in the pages of "Colors of the Sun and Moon." "Colors of the Sun and Moon" is the story of 8-year-old Gabriela and her wise and loving grandmother - a grandmother who has the answers to all of her precious granddaughter's questions about the world of wonders they see around them. While Abuela's answers are simple enough for a young child to understand, they are factual and scientifically sound.

I applaud author Talia Aikens-Nuñez for giving her readers a story that is appealing on so many levels: it is educational, entertaining, and family-focused. What a rare combination of elements! As I read "Colors of the Sun and Moon," images from my own childhood flashed in my mind, and I found myself smiling in amusement and amazement. I feel certain that the young reader and the not-so-young reader in your home will enjoy this book as much as I did.

- Spencer Christian, Weather Anchor for ABC 7/KGO-TV, San Francisco

VBT + #Giveaway: His Montana Rescue by Vella Munn @GoddessFish

His Montana Rescue
by Vella Munn
GENRE:  contemporary romance

BLURB:

Former firefighter Echo Rose may have recovered from the injuries that nearly ended her life but the emotional scars still linger. She now devotes herself to protecting wildlife and sheltering her heart until local contractor Rey Bowen reminds Echo that life can offer so much more.

Rey Bowen is not the only one at Lake Serene with secrets and a desire to reboot his seriously derailed life. Meeting Echo reminds him that life can sparkle with joy and laughter and passion, but can he show the cautious Echo how to love again even as he struggles to trust his own heart?

Excerpt:

“Ranger Echo Rose,” a rumbling voice said.

Taking it slow, she turned in the direction the words came from.

Rey Bowen was looking at her, or rather looking down at her. He wasn’t a giant of a man, just a shade over six feet, but that didn’t stop her from remembering she was at least seven inches shorter and only one hundred twenty pounds. For reasons she was careful not to examine too closely, she’d told herself the breadth of his chest and width of his shoulders were responsible for her unsettling reaction to him.

What was she thinking? Hadn’t she learned, painfully, to keep emotional distance between herself and men? She had, darn it. She’d never drop her guard.

Until she’d done in her ankle, she’d spent much of her time around physical people, most of them men. She still was around more men than women, but in recent months she'd mostly rubbed shoulders with people who spent their days behind desks.

Despite how she'd been forced to earn her living since last summer, she believed she still understood the physical male. When he was around women he was trying to impress, the breed carried himself as if he was a bull elk, strutting a bit, hard muscles pushing against too-tight T-shirts, and gazes giving out bedroom vibes.

Rey did none of those things. Instead, it was as if he’d built an emotional wall around himself. The reason was none of her business, darn it. She had enough to do dealing with her own life.

An Interview with Vella Munn

What inspired you to write His Mountain Rescue?

I’m not sure I had a choice. LOL. I was relaxing with a fellow writer after an intense conference, drinking a glass of wine as we sat outside a mountain cabin watching a storm approach. I was raised in the mountains, mostly in a remote logging town and believe I have the wilderness in my DNA. As the wind kicked up and the sky turned purple, my love affair with nature kicked into high gear. I wanted, no, I needed to write about characters who find healing and second chances while surrounded by nature. In a matter of minutes, I was blabbing to my friend about writing a contemporary romance series with each story taking place during a different season. His Mountain Rescue is the summer story.

When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

I think I always wanted to be a writer even though early on I couldn’t articulate what I was feeling. I was in the third or fourth grade when I wrote and illustrated a comic book with the Lone Ranger’s horse Silver as the hero.

What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

I’m too old to remember back that far. J However, I do remember being drawn to fiction books designed for boys. They had so much adventure in them.

What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

I’ve long been drawn to romantic suspense but confess to the occasional true crime or man against nature nonfiction. When I’m feeling brave, I’ll pick up a Steven King horror.

What is your favorite book?

Oh gosh, I hate being asked that because for me, a single one doesn’t stand out. One of my favorites is my dear friend Catherine Anderson’s Annie’s Song, an historical with a deaf heroine and the hero who opens the world to her.

You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

Because I know so many writers, I feel disloyal for naming just one but Catherine’s books always touch my heart.

If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

I sometimes think I should come up with a different answer, but it always remains the same. My grandfather was a writer, multi-published in the pulp magazines. He was murdered when my mother was six. I’d love to go back to when he was alive so we could talk shop and I could get to know the man I consider my mentor. I’d also like to observe my grandmother’s life when she was left alone with three small children to raise. She’d been born with a deformed right hand and 60% hearing loss. She’s my hero. She also helped raise me which is another story.

When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

Oh I can procrastinate with the best of them but I’m happier when I’m in the middle of a book than when I’m trying to decide what to write next. Even with some 70 titles under my belt, writing never gets easy, but there’s nothing else I want or am qualified to do.

Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

I’m owned by two rescue dogs, one a hyper terrier, the other a big, mellow couch potato.

What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?

Macaroni and cheese. My own recipe with enough cheese to clog my arteries.

Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Absolutely. If your goal is to be published, never lose sight of the fact that this is a business. I’ve always worn two hats, my writer one and my business one. They don’t have a lot in common.

Book Blast + #Giveaway: SKELETONS IN THE ATTIC by Judy Penz Sheluk @JudyPenzSheluk @GoddessFish

SKELETONS IN THE ATTIC
by Judy Penz Sheluk
GENRE:  Mystery

BLURB:

What goes on behind closed doors doesn’t always stay there…

Calamity (Callie) Barnstable isn’t surprised to learn she’s the sole beneficiary of her late father’s estate, though she is shocked to discover she has inherited a house in the town of Marketville—a house she didn’t know existed. However, there are conditions attached to Callie’s inheritance: she must move to Marketville, live in the house, and solve her mother’s murder.

Callie’s not keen on dredging up a thirty-year-old mystery, but if she doesn’t do it, there’s a scheming psychic named Misty Rivers who is more than happy to expose the Barnstable family secrets. Determined to thwart Misty and fulfill her father’s wishes, Callie accepts the challenge. But is she ready to face the skeletons hidden in the attic?

Excerpt:

Leith Hampton placed the will in front of him, smoothing an invisible crease with a well-manicured hand, the nails showing evidence of a vigorous buffing. I wondered what kind of man went in for a mani-pedi—I was surmising on the pedi—and decided it was the kind of man who billed his services out for five hundred dollars an hour.

He cleared his throat and stared at me with those intense blue eyes. “Are you sure you’re ready, Calamity? I know how close you were to your father.”

I flinched at the Calamity. Folks called me Callie or they didn’t call me at all. Only my dad had been allowed to call me Calamity, and even then only when he was seriously annoyed with me, and never in public. It was a deal we’d made back in elementary school. Kids can be cruel enough without the added incentive of a name like Calamity.

As for being ready, I’d been ready for the past ninety-plus minutes. I’d been ready since I first got the call telling me my father had been involved in an unfortunate occupational accident. That’s how the detached voice on the other end of the phone had put it. An unfortunate occupational accident.

I knew at some point I’d have to face the fact that my dad wasn’t coming back, that we’d never again argue over politics or share a laugh while watching an episode of The Big Bang Theory. Knew that one day I’d sit down and have a good long cry, but right now wasn’t the time, and this certainly wasn’t the place. I’d long ago learned to store my feelings into carefully constructed compartments. I leveled Leith with a dry-eyed stare and nodded.

“I’m ready.”
