Breeder by K.B. Hoyle
Release Date: December 11 , 2014
Genre: Fiction: Dystopian
ISBN e-book:   978-1-61213-292-1

 ~~SUMMARY~~

Everything about Seventeens life is perfect, from her genetics, to her home in Sanctuary, to her status as a Breeder in the Unified World Order. But all that changes when she meets a rogue Enforcer named Pax, who infiltrates Sanctuary and targets her for extraction from the Controlled Repopulation Program. Pax seems to know a little too much about her, and he plants dangerous doubts in her mind that accuse Sanctuary of hiding a dark secret, and that cause Seventeen to question everything shes ever known.

When Seventeens life is threatened, she has little choice but to run away from Sanctuary with Pax. But for Breeders, contact with men is forbidden by law, and even the simple act of taking Paxs hand is treason.

Mired in confusion, Seventeen travels with Pax to the outside world and takes the name Pria, the identity of her childhood. But she is far from certain shes made the right decision when they discover an entire community of people who should no longer exist.

Seventeen, now Pria, is thrust into a position as a key player in a dangerous bid to bring down the Unified World Order. Meanwhile, Paxs attachment to her and her growing attraction to him contribute to the ever-growing mysteries in her life.

Prias journey from a sheltered, naïve Breeder to a rebel agent requires not only external transformation but self-discovery. As her world crumbles, Pria must decide who she is and what she really believes.

But the truth comes at a cost, and uncovering it will require a greater treason than she could ever have imagined.

~~Guest Post~~

Do the characters all come to you at the same time, or do some of them come to you as you write?

For Breeder, I actually planned out far more characters than made it into the book. Obviously my main characters were set long before I started writing, and all of them made it in, but there are several characters I came up with as side characters who were available for me to use, or not use, as needed. I used some, but the storyline didn’t give me space to adequately introduce them all in this first book, so that just means I already have a bank of characters to choose from to people the sidelines in book 2, Criminal. Even with all my planning and extra characters, though, there will always be times when I’m writing where I realize I really need another character, a character I haven’t created yet, to play a role and/or fill a plot hole, so I do create some here and there as I go along. I think most novelists probably experience that, though. When you’ve created a new world, you always have to ask yourself as you’re going along, “Who might I meet in a place like this?” Some of the best characters come into being that way.

~~My Review~~

I received a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.

Seventeen is a Breeder in the Unified World Order and lives at Sanctuary. A Breeder is what they call the females that live at Sanctuary. Seventeen and all of the other girls at Sanctuary are a part of the Controlled Repopulation Program. The girls are used to carrier babies, perfect babies. The Unified World Order is striving for a utopia world; a perfect society. They give the girls meds to keep them healthy enough to carry a baby. They also make them eat like six meals a day and work out to stay in shape and in good condition to carry a child. The Sanctuary is the only home that any of these girls remember.

One day Seventeen is sent to the infirmary for a procedure which only means that she was pregnant when they put her to sleep but wasn’t when she woke up.  While she was in having her procedure done she saw a man but when she tried to tell Mother she didn’t believe her. It is illegal for Seventeen or any of the girls to come in contact with a man. So unfortunately no one believed her when she tried to tell them; which was a good thing for her in the long run. After she lost her baby and she was returned back to her room and back into population with the other girls Seventeen became curious about a lot of things that was going on at the Sanctuary.  She was seeing things that no one else was seeing or at least that was what they were telling her. Being curious and inquisitive about certain things was a very bad idea and could get you into a lot of trouble.

Seventeen started asking more and more questions until finally Mother instructed the nurses to take care of her. But luckily the man that she had seen before saw her and knew what they were going to do to her so he explained to her what they were going to do and talked her into leaving with him. Seventeen was so surprise when she saw what was outside the walls of the Sanctuary. She learned that what she had been taught was wrong and that the outside was nothing like what she was told.
Pax explained to her about the outside world and that there was other people out there that were surviving on their own without the help of the Sanctuary or the Unified World Order.  Seventeen decides that she wants a name too like Pax she doesn’t want to be just a number anymore she wants to be somebody. So she calls herself Pria, a name that she was given when she was a child. The only way that Pax and Pria could survive out in this new world was to find other people or humans like them, who lived together as a group so they could survive in this new world.

Pria may be a naïve girl in the beginning but she learns real quick how to survive. As when any group of people there are good and bad. And some of the people in this group that Pax and Pria meet up with are not very good people and they want to hurt Pria but Pax will do whatever he has to; to keep her safe. Pria would do the same for Pax as well. They got to know each other pretty well on their little journey to find this group of survivors. But finding a new home and people they can trust may be more than Pax or Pria can handle. Once they find out what they want Pria to do just may cost them their lives and their freedom.

I have been hooked on dystopian books this year and I have tried to read everyone I could get my hands on. Breeder was an amazing story and one h3ll of a good read. I loved the world that the author built for Sanctuary and the world outside of there. I loved all of the characters or most all of them anyways. Pax and Pria were my two favorite characters. But I did come to like Henri and his sister Celine both of them were real good people and new more about Pria than she knew they knew. Henri and Celine they looked out for Pria just as close as or closer than Pax because they knew the people better in their group.

If you love reading dystopian books the Breeder is one book you don’t won’t to miss out on. It will take a hold of you from the very first word and you won’t want to put it down to take a bathroom break. Oh wait if you are like me where now days we have different devices that we can take with us where ever we go and read. I still like having a paperback or hardback book you can carry them with you too but with all the new devices that we have now days you can carry more than one book with you. Oh and with a phone you can take it with you to a friend or family member’s house and you just might have a need to go to the bathroom a lot that is if the book is good. Breeder is one of those books that you will be glad that you have an eBook.

Praise for Breeder

"Breeder was anything but a let down. The characters were extremely well written, making me able to empathize with Pria and Pax and the situation they find themselves in. I kept turning the pages because I just had to find out what happened to these people and, to my shock, finished the book in a day! "  - Angela  Goodreads Review

The SIS team has dealt with all sorts of things that go bump in the night--vampires, zombies, even demons. But not everything odd or occult walks or breathes. The CIA calls on SIS leader John Benchley to alert him to a strange set of occurrences around an abandoned house in Baltimore. Investigating, the SIS team stumbles on to something unprecedented and deadly. And not every SIS member gets away from their encounters unscathed.
Life continues to go on--even around vampires, mad scientists and demons. SIS FBI liaison Gabrielle Dichenz, who is the lover of both John Benchley and Evan Garrett, John's boyfriend, is coming to terms with her new life.  Recovering from her past with an abusive ex means looking closely at her present. Evan's waiting patiently to integrate both of his lovers into his wider life. John, on the other hand, isn't the sort of personality who takes well to waiting. There's something really good growing between the three of them. Gabrielle just has to decide whether to truly grab for the brass ring or let her past dictate the shape of her future.

EXCERPT

John placed a hand on the doorknob. He already had a slightly creepy feeling about this place and he wondered if it had to with the reputed ley lines that Fiona had indicated might be beneath the house. The knob twisted with moderate ease and he pushed the door open.  "No need to break out the lock picks."
There were signs of scuffed footprints through the dust and dirt in the foyer and he stood motionless for a moment just looking inside.
"Are we going in or what?" asked Todd.
"Yeah, yeah. Todd, you and Cecelia check upstairs. Rich, circle around back and see if there's a door there. Evan and I will start on this floor.
There was a murmur of assent from the team members, and they began to head in separate directions. Evan was left standing a few feet behind John.
"Is it just me or does this place kind of make your skin crawl?" asked Evan.
John glanced back at him. "No, it's not just you. Any thoughts as to why?"
Evan stepped in the direction of the front room and stood studying the decorative molding above the door. "Take a look at the corners," he said pointing to the square blocks topping the corners. "Those look like Thelemic stars to me." He pointed to the two overlapping chevron's carved into the wood. It was all stained the same color and the symbols were not immediately apparent.
"Thelemic… that ritual magic stuff right?"

"Not just ritual, more along the lines of ceremonial, and more specifically utilized heavily by the Crowley crowd. I think theremight be more than one version of the stars, but I don't know offhand what the differences might indicate."
"Okay this definitely leans in the direction of supporting some of last few things that Fiona found. You take the right hand rooms as we move toward the back of the house and I'll take the left. It should only take us a few minutes to go through," said John.
***
Evan walked into the dimly lit room near the back of the house. It had one window, much smudged and cobwebbed that let some daylight in. Along the wall was a dusty broken chair, a fabric duffle bag and a pair of beer cans. He turned around to glance at the walls behind him, near the door. On the right hand side of the door hung a long narrow mirror in a heavy, dark, carved frame. He was standing at a sharp angle to it and couldn't see his own reflection. Heading toward the duffle bag, he glanced at the mirror again. His image was wavy, distorted and he idly wondered how old the glass was. Something drew his eye.
In the reflection Evan saw a man behind him, and he whirled around to face the stranger. Gabrielle's body was sprawled limply on the floor. Tom Garner, Brie's psycho ex-boyfriend, was kneeling beside her, a knife in his hand, stabbing her again and again. Evan screamed, "NO!" He tackled the man and knocked him backward to the floor.
***
As John reached the back door and met Rich in the narrow kitchen, he wondered if Evan had found anything. "Go check upstairs and see if Todd and Cecelia need any help. I wonder of this place has a basement or just a crawl space. Look for a door that goes down," he said to Rich.
"On it."
John backtracked and veered into the very abbreviated hallway that separated two of the rear rooms. He glanced into the left hand one, empty, unless you counted dust and a squashed soda can.
"Yo, Evan. Find anything?" he called out. He looked into the right hand one. Evan was standing motionless, staring into an empty corner, his hand outstretched. John started toward him.  "Ev'?"
Suddenly Evan lunged at him, screaming. They went down in a tangle. Evan's hands wrapped around John's throat, and he began banging John's head on the edge of the door frame. The first blow stunned John and he flailed helplessly against the floor. The second was a bolt of agony through the back of his head. He could barely breathe, Evan's hands were wrapped so tightly around his throat. The blows continued and consciousness was fading into blackness. Evan was still screaming at him, "No! NO! You killed her! Oh God you killed her!"

Excerpt:

As we rounded a corner I glanced back to make sure the twins were right behind me. In the instant that I looked away, I collided with a solid, masculine body. His hands flew to my elbows to steady me.

"I'm so sorry!" I exclaimed the same moment he said, "Are you okay?"

I stepped back and found myself looking into a pair of espresso colored eyes. His espresso colored hair was hopelessly rumpled. It was a bit too long and…perfect, really.

"I'm fine, just clumsy," I admitted.

"She's not good at paying attention," Madison informed him.

He chuckled, setting a single dimple free. "I'll have to remember that."

"Sometimes she crashes into my dad and makes him spill his coffee," she somberly explained.

"Madison, hush! That happened one time!" I said with a laugh.

"He didn't get mad though. My daddy likes EmLynn," she continued on. "He says we have to be patient with her because she can be kind of moody sometimes. But he says that she still loves us. Even when she's grumpy."

Of course I loved them.

And I wasn't that grumpy. At least not lately.

Natalie, who was standing a step behind Madison, nodded in wide-eyed agreement.

"EmLynn, huh?" he asked. "Pretty name."

"Thanks."

"I'm Eric."

"And you're new around here," I added.

"Yeah, I am." He didn't look too pleased about it.

After what I'd seen today, I couldn't really blame him.

I slid a glance toward the pool area, scowling at Jace when I realized he was watching our interaction.

"Well, don't let them get to you," I said as I vaguely motioned toward the pool area.

His frowned. "You saw all that?"

I nodded sympathetically. "I wish I could say they weren't all bad. But that whole group is. I do my best to avoid them."

"Emmm," Madison said as she tugged on the hem of my shirt, "can we go home now? I want to see if my Daddy's home yet."

"In a minute," I assured her. I turned back to Eric. "So was this your first day?"

He shook his head. "No. It's my third."

"Have all the days been like this?"

"Nah, just the first day and today." He shook his head, realizing how bad that sounded.

Two days out of three? I shook my head in sympathy.
