ORIGIN. DESTINY. FATE. How far would you go to unravel the truth?

Trattora is the adopted daughter of the Chieftain on a primitive frontier planet. Velkan is an indentured serf who has never known a day of freedom. Forced to flee an invasion by Galactic Pirates, they find themselves thrown together on a ramshackle mining vessel that harbors more than one dark secret. Fate and chemistry combine when the pair’s matching birth bracelets lead them to a shocking discovery about their true lineage. Stakes rise when they uncover the classified Expulsion Project, and the devastating sacrifice their birth families made to spare their lives. Determined to save them from liquidation, Trattora and Velkan plunge headlong into a race against time and space to take down the genocidal self-actualizing software that now controls large swathes of their home planet.

But will they navigate the treacherous dealings of the seedy Galactic underworld in time to rescue the families who loved them enough to let them go?

Girl of Fire is the first novel in The Expulsion Project, a sci-fi, dystopian thriller trilogy with a whisper of romance, a heavy dose of adventure, and action galore. If you are a Firefly or Dark Matter fan, or in Divergent withdrawal, this is the book mashup for you!

My Review:

Trattora lives on the planet Cwelt with her adoptive parents; the chieftain and his wife. Trattora was adopted from traders’ years ago. Although she has always loved and cared very much for her adoptive parents she has always wanted to know who her birth parents were and where she came from. Trattora is the next in line to be leader after her father as chieftain of Cwelt but she has always wanted to have her own ship so that she could travel the universe and explore other planets.

One day a trader ship comes for a visit on Cwelt and is hoping to make a big discovery on the planet that would make them rich. Trattora and her best friend play host to the traders while they are snooping around their planet. Trattora in hopes of one day owning her own ship like the traders and thinks that if the traders find what they are looking for then her dreams may come true.

But before her dreams or the traders are fulfilled Cwelt is attacked which sends all of Trattora’s people in hiding. Trattora and her friend don’t have time to make it to their hiding place so they hop on board the trader’s ship to escape and hope to return one day to save her people.

Trattora’s dreams are finally coming true in a way she is getting to travel on a ship but just not the way she planned. But Trattora is a tough girl and makes the best of the situation that she is dealt. Now Trattora’s plans are to get her own ship, travel around the universe, rescue the people on Cwelt, and find out who her birth parents were but not necessarily in that order.

I will have to say that I have truly loved traveling from planet to planet with Trattora and all her friends. I felt as if I was visiting old friends again myself like Spock and Captain Kirk and flying around on the Enterprise. I enjoyed reading about all the different technology and learning all the words but I would like to have had a list or index to  refer to on occasion to help keep my mind refreshed on what their meanings were.

If you like reading science fiction or traveling around the universe or like old shows like Star Trek then I think you are going to love Girl of Fire and its new trilogy The Expulsion Project I know I am. I can’t wait to read more about The Expulsion Project.

Excerpt:

You know that moment when you’re falling, almost floating in the sky, but really you’re plummeting? Then you slam down and that’s not it, the force of your fall as you’re smashing against the cracked concrete brings you to bounce back up just before you start falling again. . .?

That’s where I am, right there in between the rise and the fall. And I’m kind of stuck. I’ve felt the rush of the fall and the pain from the landing. Now, I’m ready to settle down even knowing it’ll hurt when I hit again.

I squeeze my eyes shut, counting down from ten. You can do this, Tracey, I try, try to encourage myself. Resist it, I think, hearing the strain in my thought. I grit down on my teeth only at five one-thousand.

Ugh! I can’t. It doesn’t hurt, it just drives me freaking insane! Nate, please?
Please come up here.

Sparky, he carries with his grumble.

Nathan? I beg.

Sparks, baby. I literally. Lit-er-a-lly just left you like forty-five minutes ago.
I slump down in my chair, scraping my thumbnails over each other. A bubble builds in my chest as a masking irritation itches my flesh—every inch of me.
Nathan sighs. I’ll come up there when you go on lunch. You’re killing me, Sparks.

This stupid bond is killing me, I rant. I know, Nate. Don’t say it. Don’t take this the wrong way, but I hate being crazy over you. He laughs. I get it all. The love, lust, the obsession.

Talk to me later, okay? I’ve gotta get some work done since I’m cutting the day short.
Me too. I sigh, looking over my notes, comparing them to what’s on the whiteboard. They don’t match. I might’ve dazed out at some point and started scribbling what I thought I heard.

Bewitched & Bewildered Series Character Interview
provided by Alanea Alder

I know people wanted to ask about what Ryuu is, but I figured that’s a big spoiler and I also thought Ryuu would probably want to stay in the shadows and let Meryn take the spotlight in an interview.

*Buxom J fidgets nervously until all her guests are seated.*

Buxom J:  “Hi guys, I want to thank you for taking time to visit with me before your trip to Noctem Falls.  I know that you’re super busy fighting ferals and packing for your trip but inquiring minds want to know.”

*points to the large group of women behind her holding various signs, one shouts out “Ryuu, I want to have your baby!”*

“Just for those out there who don’t know what’s going on.  We’re here talking with Aiden, Meryn, Gavriel and Elizabeth from Lycanoia, the shifter city in the Bewitched and Bewildered world of Alanea Alder. ”

Buxom J:  “For those who don’t know you, can you give a brief bio on yourselves?”

Meryn: shrugs Not much to say, I had a pretty lame childhood, went to college, started my own online security company then met Aiden. Then things got nuts.

Aiden winces Sorry love, you know I never meant for you to be in danger.

Meryn: It’s more fun this way, plus lots of sex.

Aiden eyes widen: Right. Coughs Anyway. I was raised in Lycaonia and always wanted to be a unit warrior like my father. I was made Unit Commander about six hundred years ago and have been leading the men ever since.

Beth shaking her head: I was raised in Noctem Falls, but I call Lycaonia home now.

Gavriel: I don’t remember much from my childhood, but I do know that my home now is with Beth.

Buxom J:  “The most burning question on everyone’s mind is….is there any update on Keelan?”  You can evade this question or any if you want if it’ll spoil anything.

Meryn shakes her head sadly Not yet, though he seems to be having a blast teasing Sascha.

Buxom J: “ Next questions are for Meryn, your fans want to know more about what you did before you met Aiden.  We know you did something that involved computers and security.  Can you go into more detail?  And,”  *sends a worried glance to Aiden and then speaks really fast and softly* “did you have any romantic relationships prior to Aiden?”

Meryn: I basically lived in a crappy little apartment. I could afford better, but I didn’t feel like moving, too much work. I’d wake up, write some code, eat a hot pocket, then go back to checking in with my clients, eat another hot pocket, watch some Doctor Who then go to bed. Bathing happened in there somewhere too,,,, sometimes.

I didn’t date much, because I hate small talk and first dates are always small talk. The few boyfriends I did have thought I was weird.

Buxom J:  “Now some fun baby questions!  When are you due?  Are you planning on finding out the gender?  Do you have any baby names picked out?”

Aiden brightens Adam thinks she’ll be due sometime in August. We’ve decided we don’t want to know the baby’s sex, we’d like for it to be a surprise. I’m personally hoping for a boy.

Meryn: It’s a girl. Meryn 2.0

Aiden: It will be a boy and I’m thinking it needs to be an A name, after me.

Meryn: If it’s a boy let’s name him Doctor. Then people will go, Doctor Who! That would be awesome!

Buxom J: “Aiden, how do you think you’re going to cope while Meryn’s in labor?”

Aiden: I have been reading What to Expect When You’re Expecting. It’s a human book about babies. I feel fairly confident I will be immensely helpful.

Buxom J:  “Beth… is it okay if I call you Beth? Do you plan on shifting so you can cuddle up with the wee one?”  *turns to grin at the other woman*

Beth:  I think I’d be better off staying human so I can remind Meryn to feed the poor thing.

Meryn: Ryuu will feed her.

Buxom J:  “Ok ladies….this is an important question….favorite Doctor?”  “Favorite enemy?”  *adjusts her Fourth Doctor t-shirt and winks*

Beth: I’m a fourth doctor fan myself. Favorite enemies, the daleks

Meryn: I’m a ten/eleven girl. I thought Matt Smith was too carefree coming off of Tenant. But I went back and watched his seasons, and the moments where he’s serious gives me chills, its like you can see Tenant peeking through. My favorite enemy right now is Missy. I’d love to be her BFF.

Beth eyes Meryn worriedly

Buxom J:  “And if you had to match up Alpha House residents with Doctor Who characters, who would correspond with who?”

Meryn: Hmm. Colton is Mickey…

Beth: Meryn! He is not, he’s really Eleven.

Meryn nods. Okay I’ll give you that. Then Aiden can be Ten, Gavriel can be Nine She turns to

Beth.  You are definitely Sarah Jane and I’m a Martha/Amy mix.

Buxom J:  “Beth, are you excited to be heading home?  What are you looking forward to most about being home?”

Beth: I’m really hoping Sebastian will be able to add to my wardrobe, I need some new pieces for spring.

Buxom J:  “Gavriel, are you nervous about meeting Beth’s Dads, their squire and her uncle?”

Gavriel: Not in the slightest. Though I may have some questions for her guards. I would love to know how they kept her alive.

Beth: Gavriel!

Gavriel shrugs.

Buxom J:  “How long has it been since any of you, besides Meryn, has been in Noctem Falls?”

Aiden: I’ve never been.

Gavriel: Over five thousands years I believe

Beth:  I was there last year. I had to return home to heal after falling out of that dratted window.

Gavriel shudders

Buxom J:  “You know, Gavriel, this does afford you the perfect opportunity to brainstorm with her Dads about what to do when Beth becomes pregnant.  Or do you already have precautions in place?  How do you think you’ll cope?”

Gavriel: I think the safest option is to keep Beth in bed.

Everyone turns to stare.

Beth I will not be in bed nearly ten months!

Meryn If I had my laptop, that doesn’t sound too bad.

Beth laughs: Ryuu would have to drag you out of bed to get you to shower.

Meryn nods True

Buxom J:  “If you had a free day with no responsibilities and the only thing you had to do was enjoy yourselves, what would all of you do?”

Aiden: I’d want to spend the day with Meryn doing whatever she wanted.

Beth: I’d want to go on a shopping spree.

Gavriel: I am like Aiden, I would simply wish to be near my mate.

Meryn: I’d love to party with strippers at DragonCon.

Everyone turns to stare and Aiden growls

Meryn: What? You’d be there since you wanted to spend the day with me.

Buxom J:  “If you could have unlimited storage of one thing, what would it be?”

Aiden: Ammunition.

Beth: Clothes

Gavriel: Books

Meryn: My geek stuff collection

Buxom J:  “Aiden, does Meryn make you clean the bathroom, more specifically the toilet, as a punishment?”  *glances back at the peanut gallery where snickers can be heard*

Aiden: No, thank goodness. Ryuu cleans for the house.

Buxom J:  “Is Ryuu traveling with you?”

Meryn nodding. Yup!

Buxom J:  “And how are you traveling?”

Beth: Darian will open a fae portal for use. We’ll simply step through and be on the outskirts of the city.

If by car Buxom J:  “Road trip!  Are you stopping by the Duck In for snacks?  If so what ones?”

Buxom J: “And what’s on the radio?”

Buxom J:  “How many warriors are accompanying you?”

Aiden: We’ll be meeting with the Eta Unit when we arrive, so in traveling it will just be myself, Gavriel and Ryuu.

Well, folks, I think that’s all we have time for today.  We need to let these folks get back to saving the paranormal world.  *turns back to her guests* Thank you again for joining me for the interview.  We look forward to reading about the rest of your adventures in My Guardian by Alanea Alder.

Archeologist and single mother, Macy, and her teenage daughter, Tiffany, are off on a fool-hardy search for traces of an ancient Egyptian cat-goddess, Bastet. What they find is far more than they bargained for: a dangerous dictator, a mysterious police inspector, and a grizzled Indiana Jones look-alike.

You might say the trip takes them right out of this world. Will they get home alive, or simply disappear into very thin air?

Set in the near future, with a blend of thriller and speculative fiction, and a hint of romance.

Excerpt

Macy rose to her feet, leaned over, and poured the entire ruby contents of her wine glass neatly over the crotch of his light gray slacks. For one brief second she considered following this up with a slap across his now-shocked face; instead she gritted her teeth, set the glass with care on the table, and picked up her purse.

“You bastard! You waited until the night before I was going away for three weeks to tell me we’re breaking up. Because you find us boring!” She took a deep breath to stop the shaking. “Enjoy your dinner. You can have mine too, to remember me by.”

Macy glared around at the patrons at the nearby tables, all trying to pretend they weren’t listening or watching; all that is, except the fat idiot who was filming the proceedings with his wrist-cell. Gathering what little dignity remained, she pointed her nose at the sparkling ceiling and stalked between the diners. She half expected a plaintive “Do you know how much that wine cost?” to follow her across the room.

Her dramatic exit, marred briefly by a slight stumble on the steps at the entrance, led directly past the live hostess frozen at her station, menu tablets in hand, waiting with a party of four. That young lady, her clinging black gown displaying far too much analog information, stood, jaws gaping. The two men beside the hostess took a quick nervous step backward as Macy swept by. One of their lady friends smiled at her, the other winked and whispered, “Good for you.” Macy did not look back.

Blinking away tears, she grabbed her coat and swept out through the revolving doors. Of course, the rain, forecast for tomorrow, had arrived early and turned Yonge Street into mini class-three rapids rushing down toward the waterfront. The first taxi plowed by, silent except for the bow wave that drenched her from her five-inch heels to her knees. The second cab slowed, decided she looked too dangerous or distraught, and purred away into a night that smelled of wet garbage and rain tinged with ethanol.

Fiercely, she punched the worn buttons on the nearby taxi pillar, brushing the dim screen with her wrist to activate. With luck, she could summon an auto-cab and avoid any unnecessary human contact.

The rain beat on the pavement, traffic thinned, and the city seemed to be shutting down around her in slow motion. At this critical point in time and space, icy rivulets of water forced their way into places she preferred to keep private. Finally, her frantic wits smoldering and near termination, she shouldered her way around a young couple struggling to collapse their automatic umbrella, and dived into the back seat of their waiting live-cab.

“Hey, that’s ours.”

“Tough. Driver, if you know what’s good for you, get going before I lose what little is left of my mind and decide to throttle you just for fun.”

The driver hit the pedal and the electrics kicked in, launching them into the street. “Where to, lady?”

Review + #Giveaway: Griffen by A.J. Blakemont @blakemont_books @GoddessFish

Griffen
by A.J. Blakemont
GENRE: Dark Urban Fantasy

BLURB:

"They are immortal, deadly, ruthless. I don’t belong to their dark underworld.

I won’t be a victim. Never again."

She has nothing—not even a roof above her head. She has unimaginable powers, but these powers come at a price: she has to feed on the mental energy of human beings, killing them in the process.

Her name is Griffen and she is a newborn. She is a copy, a paranormal twin of a young woman, Letitia. Griffen is not the only one of her kind—there are others like her, living among humans or hiding underground. Romantics called them doppelgangers, ghostly twins, the harbingers of death. Scientists who know that they exist call them simulacra. They call themselves mirror souls. Who are they and what are their goals?

Lonely and desperate, hunted by her fellow mirror souls, Griffen hides in the London underground and preys on criminals. In this dark underworld, is there a place for compassion, for love?

In this action-packed paranormal thriller, dark fantasy author A. J. Blakemont will guide you on an epic journey through parallel realities toward a dramatic revelation.

Excerpt:

My father was an engineer, my mother a botanist. They must have loved each other very much because, honestly, they had little in common. She was a Wiccan; he was a Protestant atheist (I couldn’t explain how that was even possible!).

Father’s office was designed like the cockpit of a spaceship. Each time I borrowed a book or even a pen, I had to return it exactly to the same place. I feared that if I put it elsewhere, an alarm would go off: “Alert, alert, pen number five has been misplaced!” Of course, there was no alarm, which made the room even more frightening. I had the feeling that some artificial intelligence watched my every move.

Mother’s room was the opposite: it resembled more a greenhouse than an office. Plants couldn’t just content themselves with growing from pots; they had to invade every available square inch. If we had stayed in one place for several years, the walls, the furniture, the frames of the windows would have been overgrown with vegetation.

Parents like these could only give birth to a science fiction fan. I still wonder why I didn’t grow up in a Star Trek uniform. However, genetics works in mysterious ways. From my mother, I inherited a taste for chaos, and from my father, a deep distrust of authority (spiritual or otherwise). In other words, I was an unrepentant anarchist.

One day—I was sixteen then—I had a surprise for them. In fact, I was the surprise. My black leather jacket was supposed to symbolize my intellectual independence and, at least in my imagination, was demonstrating my status of freethinker. My hairstyle, on the other hand, should have pleased my mother, as it evoked one of those exotic white flowers she was so fond of. Nevertheless, my getup didn’t send my parents into ecstasies. It did send them into an emotional state, but it wasn’t the emotion I was hoping for.

My Review:

Griffen is a young woman who is a copy of a human girl, Letitia. Griffen is a newborn and doesn’t know much about whom she is or where she came from. She does know that she is Letitia’s twin her doppelganger as some people call them but to Griffen and her kind they call themselves mirror souls.

Griffen soon learns that she is not the only one of her kind and soon meets others of her kind but would like to stay all to herself but unfortunately that may not be the case. She learns that there are numerous groups of mirror souls out there some that are worse than others. Some of which you don’t want no part of ever.

Griffen is taken by one the factions who want her to be a part of their group but they want her to do things and be a part of things that she doesn’t want to do. But they do teach her a lot about herself like how she is supposed to feed and how to use her abilities. But as soon as she gets the chance she is out of there. She is not into hurting or killing people.

I loved the concept of Griffen: Shadows of the Mirror Realm, how Griffen is the mirror image of Letitia and how Griffen is another way of explaining how Letitia feels and all the things she has been through and her family as well. When Griffen feeds it is as if Letitia is sucking the life out of her family and herself because of all the things that she did or has been through.

I have really loved reading Griffen and can’t wait to read more of Griffen’s story or maybe even more about other mirror souls like Griffen. I love the world that the author has created for Shadows of the Mirror Realm series it is definitely unlike anything I have read before but is kind of an eye opener and explains a lot of how people may feel about a lot of different things that is going on in their lives no matter how big or small it may be. As I have always said “what may be a big deal to one person may not be a big deal to someone else or vise verse but you treat it as if it is the same size”.

I would like to recommend Griffen: Shadows of the Mirror Realm to anyone who loves to read fantasy, paranormal or just a very good story.
