Genre:  Romantic Suspense
Content Warning:  Sexual Content

Synopsis:

The girl next door is all grown up, and she’s ready to play….

Brianna Miller’s life isn’t going as planned. She’s moonlighting as a cocktail waitress after getting laid off from her marketing job, her older brother was injured in Afghanistan, and the man she’s pined for since she was a teenager is back in her life, hotter than hell and more tempting than ever.

Navy SEAL Matthew “Gator” Murphy has only one goal when he returns to Pensacola, Florida for a long weekend—to welcome his best friend home and then get the hell out of there. There’s no way he can face life with his buddy in a wheelchair, not when he was the one who convinced him to enlist in the first place.

When a gorgeous blonde waitress catches his eye, the last woman he expects to see is Brianna, his best friend’s younger sister. The chemistry between them sizzles as Matthew tries to stay away from temptation, but sometimes a raging inferno begins with only a spark.

The SEAL Next Door, a stand-alone novel, is book five in the new Alpha SEALs series.

Excerpt from The SEAL Next Door:

Brianna muttered under her breath as she tripped over her flippers in the shallow water and ungracefully fell over with a splash.  The school of fish scattered in the clear, turquoise waters, and she tried to remember why she’d enjoyed this when she was younger.  Or why she’d agreed to go snorkeling with Matthew today.  She was supposed to be celebrating her brother’s long-awaited homecoming, spending the day with family, not out here making a fool of herself.

She didn’t even have her phone with her in case her parents needed to reach her or someone else contacted her from the police station.  She supposed that Matthew had thought this would be a fun distraction from what was going on at the moment, but her mind was on everything but the fish she was supposed to be admiring.

Chunks of shells cut against her hands as she struggled to push herself back up, and a strand of hair fell into her face.  Maybe flippers were good for swimming, but they were pretty lousy for attempting to walk around in.  No one else seemed to be having as much trouble as her though.

She lost her footing again as she tried to stand, dropping her goggles and snorkel into the water, which she’d long since pulled from her face.

“I got you,” a deep voice said, and suddenly Matthew’s strong hands were wrapping around her waist, lifting her back onto her feet.  He held her directly in front of him, his chest to her back, and the feel of his fingers against her bare flesh sent tingles rushing down her arms and warmth coiling in her belly.  She froze, not daring to move.

“Are you okay?”

“Fine,” she said stiffly, pulling his hands from her waist and awkwardly turning to face him.

Droplets of water ran down his bronzed skin, and she tried not to stare at his wall of muscles.  At those wide shoulders, broad pecs, and eight-pack abs.  Or into those deep green eyes.

Virtual Book Tour + #Giveaway: The Other Side of Hope by R.F. Dunham @DunhamWriter @GoddessFish

The Other Side of Hope
by R.F. Dunham
GENRE: Alternate History

BLURB:

In 732 A.D., the Frankish and Burgundian forces led by Charles Martel defeated an army of the Umayyad Caliphate led by Abdul Rahman Al Ghafiqi and halted the Muslim advance into Christian Europe. At least, that's what happened in the world as you know it.

Step into the world of The Other Side of Hope, where the world as you know it is turned on its head. A world where Charles Martel fell on that field south of Tours, France and was never given his nickname, "The Hammer." A world where Europe came under Muslim rule and Christianity was eventually forced to flee to the shores of a distant land in search of religious freedom. A land where, without support from European colonial powers, they found only conflict and poverty.

In the modern day, this world remains divided. The wealthy Muslim East and the poverty-stricken Christian West are constantly at odds. A single spark is all it takes to ignite fresh conflict and the cycle seems never-ending.

Follow the paths of Ethan Lewis and Hamid Damir as they are put on a collision course with the other side. Will they find hope for a brighter future or be lost in the despair of intractable conflict?

EXCERPT:

When Ethan saw Elisa turn the corner, his eyes lingered on her face for only an instant. The familiar details of her delicate features filled his mind at once and he wondered how they could have ever become blurred. He would have focused on those features longer, much longer. Would have memorized every inch of her face, from the curve of her cheeks, to her soft nose, to the gentle slope of her chin, to her soft red lips, and shining blue eyes.

He would have stared for hours and maybe he would have never left again. But his eyes were immediately drawn away from her face and to her belly, which was large and round.

Ethan stared at her pregnant stomach for a heartbeat that stretched on endlessly. He blinked once and then hot anger, augmented by the sharp pain of betrayal, flared. He’d been gone for months and she’d gotten pregnant with another man’s child while he was fighting for their future.

He took a step toward her and she must have seen the rage in his eyes because she rested a hand on her stomach and backed away. Seeing her fear broke through Ethan’s anger and he stopped.

“Is it…?” he asked softly, almost breathless.

Elisa nodded once, just a small dip of her chin and Ethan knew it was true.

It was his child she was carrying. He was suddenly ashamed that he could have ever thought anything different. Elisa would never betray him.

Even though the revelation of her pregnancy was a shock, Ethan had to admit that it was possible. He hadn’t truly even considered the possibility that it would happen, that she would become pregnant before they were married. Or maybe he had just assumed that it wouldn’t matter if she did, that they would be married either way and no one would ever know the difference.

Yet here they stood.

Ethan stood just inside the doorway, wrestling with feelings of desperation and duty. Elisa at the end of the hallway, eyes wide with a potent mixture of fear and hope.

Ethan held those eyes with his own for a moment longer, then came to his decision. “I’m going to Turkey. Today.”

Guest Post:

What is your writing process? For instance do you do an outline first? Do you do the chapters first?

Well, the first thing to say is that I’m a planner all the way. I can’t even fathom writing a coherent short story without an outline, much less a novel. So, to all those “pantsers” out there, I think you’re crazy, but I salute you.

I typically start with some small idea and then build the story around that. The idea might come from a news article, a random thought, or a conversation and it could be related to the setting of the story, the plot, or a character. For example, The Other Side of Hope started with an idea about the world. Basically the question, “What if Christianity and Islam could switch places?” I took that idea and kept adding layers of complexity. First the general concept of the alternate history world in which the Battle of Tours was won by Muslim armies. Then I added some characters, one on each “side” and started sketching a story that would bring them together. As I went, I made more characters that were connected to the original ones and the story kept growing with more characters.

All of that, however, came before I really started writing. Like I said, I’m a planner. So everything above ends up in a collection of various documents and notes. Which leads into a great plug for Scrivener! I use it to keep all those notes organized and it’s priceless for the next stage: outlining. As another little plug, I wrote a blog post that’s been fairly popular about using Microsoft OneNote to plan a novel. It’s what I used before I found Scrivener and, while Scrivener is far better, it’s a good alternative if you really can’t afford the $40 price tag.

Once I’ve assembled that pile of notes and reference documents, I start outlining the story. My outlines (made in Scrivener) are broken down into chapters and scenes. I usually have a brief description of what needs to go in each scene. It’s typically written in a narrative format but I sometimes include notes to myself about things to be sure to include, lines of dialogue, or potential difficulties.

The time for most major plot/story changes comes after the outline is done, but before writing begins. That makes for minimal revisions later on. So, after any necessary story tweaks are done, I start writing. Because I’ve already put so much into the story, this part flows pretty quickly. I get the first draft out and then go through a few rounds of editing/revising. To use The Other Side of Hope as an example again, I did some basic proofreading, then decided it needed a couple of extra chapters in the middle, so I added those in. After that, I sent it to my editor, Josh Davis, made the necessary corrections, and it was done!

Book Blast + #Giveaway: Wanderlust by Bernadette Marie @writesromance @GoddessFish

Wanderlust
by Bernadette Marie
GENRE: Contemporary Romance

BLURB:

Gia Gallow has traveled the world. Her wanderlust landed her in Georgia where she has created a life for herself away from the petty differences of relatives and domineering ex-lovers. Having settled in America, she has a successful business and dear friends—and the attention of both Dane and Russell Walker. Due to her own family's dramas over dueling hearts, she might have to forget about her feelings for Dane to keep peace within the Walker family, but sometimes even running thousands of miles away can't keep a heart from going after what the heart wants. And Gia's heart wants Dane.

EXCERPT:

Dane wasn't sure why his coffee suddenly tasted so bitter. It might have been the way his brother was looking at Gia when they walked through the door, and she was laughing at what he'd said.

Perhaps it was because his attitude had been affected by it and there had been no reason for it.

The way Russ had referred to her as a goddess still burned his ears.

Dane's mother orchestrated everyone through the kitchen, and they all managed to have full
plates of food when they were done. She'd managed to set enough chairs and tables, strung together, to house all the guests. He'd seen her do that at Thanksgiving too. He could hardly find enough room on his little table in his apartment to eat his microwave dinner.

"Eric and Susan, you sit there," his mother pointed to chairs.

"Russ, you there. Gia you there. Dane you there," she said pointing to three chairs near the end of the table which flowed into the living room.

"Let me take that for you," Russell smiled at Gia and took her plate.

"Oh, thank you. You seem to come to my rescue for everything."

"What can I say? I'm raised right."

Dane let out a grunt, which had both of them turning to look at him. He simply forced a smile
and took his seat—after Russ pulled Gia's seat out for her.

At least the food was excellent. Dane t listened to Pearl and Tyson tell stories about their
wedding on the beach at sunset and their honeymoon filled with snorkeling and hiking near the waterfalls.

It wasn't that he didn't like hearing the stories or the awws that came from every female in the room, but watching his brother lean into Gia, and her laughing at everything he said, seemed to be raking on his last nerve.

He took his plate into the kitchen for another helping of ham. He was a sucker for ham and tiny bagels. It was something he couldn't explain.

"Does your family do this often?" Gia slid up next to him as he tried to delicately pull two pieces of ham apart.

Dane looked at her then at the table of family members who laughed and talked over one
another. He shrugged. "Yeah, I guess. Mom's always putting together a brunch or a dinner."
Gia eased her hip against the counter. "You seem uncomfortable around them all."

"Nah, just all the gushy wedding stuff I guess." She pursed her lips. "You are not a romantic?"
Was that a loaded question? "Sure. I mean I can be romantic. I just¼"

She laughed and rested her hand on his arm. "I am sure you are the kind of man who could
sweep any woman off her feet."

Dane cleared his throat, only because he'd choked on the air he sucked in when she'd said that.
"I'm not too sure I'm very smooth with the ladies. My mind has been elsewhere for the past few
months."

She nodded and picked up the serving spoon to ladle more fruit on to her plate.
"I understand. I still have some friends back home who will not speak to me because I moved away. I will admit before I left, I might have pushed them away."

"Why?"

She shrugged. "So I would not be hurt by leaving."

Maybe she did understand. "I get that. I think"

"Did Susan make those little bacon wraps with dates?" Russ pushed in between them. "I didn't
see them, but dad has one on his plate."

"Steal his then," Dane said through gritted teeth.

"Lighten up." Russ gave him a jab as he reached in front of Gia and grabbed the bacon on a
toothpick. "Looks like I just missed them the first time." Russ ate the first one and then reached for another.

"Did you try these?" he asked Gia, holding it up to her mouth.

"Not yet," she said as he clamped the bacon wrapped date in her teeth and pulled it from the toothpick.

Dane was sure he heard both himself and his brother sigh.

She gave them a collective wink and carried her plate to the table, now occupying a seat left
vacant by Pearl's father who seemed to have disappeared.

"Could you be any more of a pig?" Dane finally took both pieces of ham and dropped them on his plate.

"Are you talking to me or the meat?"

"You," he whispered gruffly. "You're throwing yourself at her. It's annoying."
"And you're not, so I don't see the problem," Russ argued as he returned to the table.

Dane stood there a moment trying to collect his thoughts. How had it happened that he'd
moved away, and the world went on without him? He was finding out, very quickly, he didn't like it.
