Review: Vampire Girl 2: Midnight Star by Karpov Kinrade @KarpovKinrade #KingofHell #VampireGirl

Vampire Girl 2: Midnight Star
by Karpov Kinrade
Genre: Vampires, Fae, Demons, Paranormal

Blurb:

From the USA TODAY bestselling series Vampire Girl, comes the next book in the saga: MIDNIGHT STAR

I was an ordinary girl, living an ordinary life, until I sold my soul to save my mother. Now, I am forced to choose between my heart and my conscience.
Either way, someone I love will die.

My Review:

We are back with Ari and her seven prince of Hell. In Vampire Girl #1 Ari entered into a contract stating that she would spend a month each with the seven princes and at the end of the seven months she would then pick the one she would marry and become the Queen of Hell. In the first book Ari spent her first month with Fen the prince of war. She was supposed to spend the next month with one of the other prince but she was kidnapped and taken away to find out some things about herself that she did not know. After she learns the secrets about herself and what it means and what she must now do she is taken back to spend the next month with one of the seven prince.

Ari is one tough cookie she can battle and overcome whatever is thrown her way to protect the ones she loves. Ari has a big soft heart and wants to protect everyone. She wants to keep everyone alive like the vampires, fae, shades or whoever. Ari loves them all and wants no harm to come to any of them. She believes that there is peace to have one way or another. But war is coming and there is nothing she can do to stop it. Can she protect the ones she loves and keep them all alive and safe? Can she keep herself alive?

Ari finds herself wanting more and more to be with the prince of war, Fen. Whenever she is with him her body does things that she is not accustomed to. Fen is one hot dude and a very caring and loving person for a prince of war or at least from what you would think one would be that is. He is always there for Ari whenever she is in trouble. He is there to help rescue her quicker than you can blink an eye. Ari would do anything to save Fen but she is also finding that some of the other princes are not what they first appeared to be either. They are turning out to be a lot more in their hearts as well.

I just love Ari’s personality and character. I love how strong she is and will stop at nothing to help someone else. I love how she sees vampires, fae, shades, humans or whoever as all the same and wants to protect them all. She sees them all as one! She is one amazing person and she can get inside almost anyone’s heart and rip a big hole in it and have them eating out of the palm of her hand. And Yami oh I have no words for Yami at the moment except to say he is so adorable. Who is Yami well read the book and find out.
Oh and I can’t say how shocking and amazing and how much I loved that ending!!! I think you guys rocked everyone’s world with that ending!!!

If you love vampires, fae or just a good book then I highly recommend the Vampire Girl: Midnight Star but I would suggest that you read Vampire Girl first that way you know what is going on in Midnight Star but more so that you can have the chance to read two wonderful and amazing books.

Exchanged at birth, Shifty and Evangeline—one human, one sheehaim—have been raised in the opposite’s realm. Thus the stage is set for a dark and ancient ritual which would give the wraiths of the Shadow Realm a power they have long been denied, and for good reason.
In our modern day world, Shifty’s magic is becoming more powerful and her glamour is beginning to fade. She believes she’s having visions and seeks out psychiatric help. But when the people closest to her finally reveal the truth of her ancestry, she also learns that she’s in danger and must learn to protect herself. She must decide: are her lifelong friends truly looking out for her, or are they in league with the creatures from her birth realm, set to groom her for her return?
Evangeline has always known she was a human in a realm of fae. She is the daughter of one of the realm’s most powerful family, and has been promised in marriage to a well-positioned young man. When she begins to suspect there may be nefarious motives for her match, she recruits her friends to help her solve the mystery before the wedding. She must decide: is their loyalty to her, or the realm?

  Excerpt:

“You can’t go into the Den to the Supply Depot. At least, I feel you shouldn’t go.” Kayella rubbed her forehead with the sleeve of her blouse. “Let me get you a drink.” I pulled down a metal can and filled it with water. Before I turned around, Kayella’s hand was on my arm. Her footsteps were so silent that she startled me. I pivoted to look at her as she spoke a single word hauntingly. “Death.” Kayella looked so serious that I did not speak my initial thought of “nonsense.” Instead, I handed her the can and asked her to tell me about her dream. “It won’t make any sense to you. How can I explain something I don’t understand? They are bits and pieces of a puzzle.” Kayella became flustered, her hand began to tremble, and water sloshed to the floor. “I came because I felt I needed to warn you not to go tomorrow.” She grabbed my arm tightly. “Have someone go in your place. I have to go and warn Alecander.” She dropped the can into the sink, splashing water along the wall. Before I could stop her, she ran out the door and down the corridor. I stood there, taken aback. The Kayella I knew was timid and sweet. I knew nothing of this Kayella. Death. Such an ominous word. Is it that I might die? Or Alecander? What exactly had Kayella seen? Did it even matter?

EXCERPT:

Dying hurt as much as I’d thought it would.

My burning lungs begged for relief as air hissed into my nose through a plastic tube. The shallow breaths wheezing out of my mouth somehow tasted like medicine and sweat.

They tasted like my life.

Instead of violins and the somber music that played on movies in moments like this, I was dying to the soundtrack of beeping monitors and the soft shuffling of my parents’ feet. They moved around our suite quietly, like ghosts, as they waited for me to become one and finally lose to leukemia.

I’d spent the last three weeks at an upscale ski resort in Lake Placid, just watching my health fade and my time on Earth dwindle to nothing. The view of the constant snow and the towering mountains in the distance usually distracted me from the pain. I needed that view more than ever tonight.

Everything hurt, but in my mind, if I didn’t mention it, if I didn’t break, I would beat cancer in my own way.

We couldn’t afford to stay in this snowy paradise, but my parents didn’t want me to die in a sterile hospital. We’d moved to Lake Placid five months ago to chase another faint glimmer of hope, but the clinical trial had ended like all of the others—with me getting sicker. This time, we weren’t doing anything about it. After five years of giving cancer all we had, my parents had decided that we’d fought too much, cried too much, and hoped too much to do it again.

And that was okay. It had to be.

My final days were passing in a blur of tearful calls from my grandparents, long stares from my mom and dad, and smiles from my strangely exuberant hospice nurse. Sarah, with her endless energy and joy, was easily my favorite person on the planet. She supplied medicine that stopped me from feeling and long stories that kept me thinking, which made me feel alive.

Tonight, she was so busy gabbing about her ballerina days that she’d forgotten a dose of painkillers. I didn’t mention it. As she adjusted my oxygen tube, I stared at her beautiful, pixie-like face and the bright red hair framing it. Her tiny features and permanent smile made her a living fairy to me. My personal Tinkerbelle.

“It’s going to happen tonight, isn’t it?” She didn’t answer me. She draped another blanket over my legs without making eye contact. “They gave me a week to live … a week ago.”

“Sydney, I don’t want you to be concerned about death. Ever. Only focus on life and the living. Remember that, sweet girl.”

What a weird thing to say to an almost-corpse. I didn’t need to remember anything anymore. I laughed at her, and that disturbed my failing lungs. One cough turned into two, and soon Sarah had to hold me as my chest heaved relentlessly. The awful sound summoned my parents to my room.
They crept in with red eyes and rivers flowing down their cheeks, wearing yesterday’s clothes.

Nothing said that I was dying more than my dad being home. No matter where we moved, he worked, thanks to his special talent of finding a job within a day. He’d emigrated from China with his parents as a kid, and his entire family worked like one day off would mean certain death. So that was what he did—he spent his days toiling at dead-end jobs to barely keep us afloat. Except for today.

He squeezed my mom’s hand as they approached my bed. Her long dreads were down and wild tonight, and she looked beautiful despite her swollen face and runny nose. My mom had four piercings in each ear, an effortlessly cool hippy style, and a thick Trinidadian accent. Once, I’d wanted to be just like her, but now, I didn’t know what being like her meant other than crying a lot and receiving bad news.

“Mr. and Mrs. Long,” Sarah said, “I was just about to give Sydney her medicine. She’ll be asleep soon, and you don’t look like you’ve gotten much rest. I can watch her tonight.”

“Sarah,” I whispered, as my chest finally calmed. “Go home. Your shift is over.”

She pressed her warm hand to my cheek. I could’ve sworn, for a moment, I felt completely okay.

EXCERPT:

When I married, I had intended it to be for life.

Well, I guess life had a plan of its own, huh?

With each passing day, I picked up the broken pieces of me. I hadn’t realized that I had stifled so much of myself over the years to try and please a woman that seemed to never be sated with anything I said or did.

Fueled by my feelings of loss and neglect, I made a decision, which led me to rediscover an old love.
The proverbial flame was rekindled, and I began to write again.

For what felt like an eternity, I wrote. When I was done, I read my piece over so many times that my words no longer made sense, forcing me to put it down and go back to it later.

I stared at my finished manuscript displayed on my screen.

What am I going to do with this?

I had discovered a site, a few months before. It had been recommended by a colleague. The venue allowed people from around the world to peruse and read various works written by amateurs. Some of the work on there I found horrid, while others, despite their various grammatical and punctual flaws, you wished you could set your hands on an edited and printed copy, they were so great.

What the hell.

I decided to chance it.

With a bit of copy and paste, and a little restructuring, I hit the publish button and there it was. My first written piece was out for the world to see.

It wasn’t until a few months after I had posted my work that I stumbled upon a comment that I couldn’t dismiss. I ached for constructive feedback, but the lack of it was getting to me due to the site being overrun by teenagers. I debated getting rid of my profile altogether up until that fateful day.
That short message was where things began to change for me. With simple words of appreciation, intellectual and heartfelt thoughts, followed by a click of her mouse, Alissa had made me smile.
I sought her profile out and found that she was a fellow amateur writer just like me.

She’s gorgeous, had been my first impression. Despite her evident beauty, something else could be seen in her profile photo; something that beckoned me further, begged my curiosity to look beyond the surface. It was in her eyes.

Loneliness.

Or was I reading into things too much, since I was such a novice at these social media-like sites?

For a few weeks, I sat on Alissa’s words alone as I read through some of her work.

She was good.

Better than good.

I thought that I’d end up with one of those written numbers that didn’t make much sense or that glittered in the night featuring vampires and werewolves. Boy was I wrong!

The woman sure knew how to paint a vivid picture. She pulled off the hot and sexy but kept it real all at once by adding emotion, drama, even a bit of action and suspense to her mix. Her work was altogether something reminiscent of everyday life: the good, the bad, the ugly, the… Well, you get the picture.

A few days after reading her last novel, a dream influenced by her work prompted me to finally write out an acknowledgment to her comment.

From there, we began to chat through private messages on a near daily basis.

We never stopped…

Blurb Blitz Tour + #Giveaway: Spirit of the Northwoods by Auria Jourdain @AuriaJourdain @GoddessFish

Spirit of the Northwoods
by Auria Jourdain
GENRE: Young Adult

BLURB:

Struggling to settle into a new school, junior Shannon Colfax finds herself entangled in a feud with popular football jock Brent Duray after he bullies her autistic twin brother, Shane. After an unlikely savior comes to her rescue—Brent’s friend, Cody Williams—the jock and his entourage devise an immediate retaliation plan: Duray promises to leave Shane alone if Shannon and Cody survive the infamous Paulding Light Challenge on Halloween night. Desperate for vindication, they take the dare...but are the local legends truly paranormal, or are they dealing with something more sinister?

EXCERPT:

“Bye Shanna!” Shane yelled again, looking at the ground as he waved at his sister.

“Bye, Shanna!”

Shannon whipped around, ready to throttle the sarcastic bully that dared mock her brother.

“What an idiot! Who the hell would tease an autistic boy?” Christa stood on her toes, her lips lifting into a sneer. “Idiot is right. Look who it is!”

As the culprit emerged from the crowd, Shannon glared at Brent Duray, the school’s most popular jock. His girlfriend, a petite cheerleader with blonde, blown out hair and a toothpick waist, walked next to him, smirking at Brent’s teasing. As usual, the arrogant football player’s entire entourage followed close behind—mostly members of the football team. Shannon balled up her fists and cursed under her breath.

Christa tossed her head, scoffing in derision. “Duray’s a jerk. Let it go, Shannon.”

The tall, blond boy sneered. “Yeah, Shanna, let it go.”

Shannon’s face flushed with anger as she glared at Brent menacingly. She and Brent had been oil and water from day one when she overheard him teasing her twin. The senior linebacker refused to back down, and they’d been mincing words ever since.

“Leave them alone, Brent. You are acting like an idiot.”

Glancing over Brent’s head, Shannon frowned, unable to recognize the voice that had called out from the back of the crowd. “Who is that?”

“Cody Williams!” Christa’s face lit up as Duray turned toward the dissenting voice, her excited whisper echoing in Shannon’s ear.

AUTHOR BIO:

An avid reader from an early age, Auria Jourdain has fond childhood memories of spending quiet afternoons with a book in her hand. She loved the "happily ever after" sweet teen romances, and when she came of age, she plunged into the world of historical romance with fervor, transporting herself to a bygone time. Her favorites were Regency, but as a girl brought up in a common home, she was disheartened that most of the novels of this era focus on the nobility and wealth. Auria set out to write her own romance, encompassing her passion for French Revolutionary history and her innate sense of goodwill for the common man. An idealist at heart, she writes heroes and heroines that struggle to find acceptance in their world.

To go along with this theme, two years ago, Auria wrote a Young Adult novel during NaNoWriMo for her 17 year old autistic son who is struggling to make his own way in the world. Looking to educate people about this mysterious disorder, she wrote Spirit of the Northwoods for him and set it in their hometown in the Upper Peninsula. Her release coincides with Autism Awareness month, April 2016, and all proceeds for this novel will be donated to the Autism Society of America. Auria hopes that someday we can break down the social barriers and forgo stereotypical judgments that harm our world so that people like her son can form positive relationships with others.

Auria lives in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan with her husband of twenty years, her four children (ages eight to eighteen), and two golden retrievers. A rather new transplant to the area, she loves the changing of the seasons, and she is currently working on a contemporary romantic suspense trilogy set in her rough and rugged homeland. Silence the Northwoods is set at a local ski resort in her hometown of Ironwood, Michigan—the ski capital of the Midwest. Silence the Waters takes place during the summer on the dangerous river ways that flow into Lake Superior in the Keweenaw Peninsula; and Silence the Birchwoods is an autumn tale set on Sugar Loaf Mountain, near Marquette, Michigan. All three involve murder, mystery, and romance, of course.

Auria spends her the long winters plotting and scheming her next book, and in the mild summers, she and her husband devote every waking moment hiking and kayaking the Northwoods. An amateur photographer, she lives fifteen miles from the shores of Lake Superior, and her muse has been piqued by the awe-inspiring beauty that surrounds her. Although she hasn’t officially acquired “Yooper” status yet, she can’t envision living anywhere else.

SNEAK PEEK:

“I’m looking forward to the summer being over,” he said, but his statement confused me. I was disoriented by his placement and my hands in his, and wondering why he’d ever want this summer to end. Jack had it better than the rest of us.

“Why?” finally came out of my mouth when I was able to draw my gaze away from our hands and look him in the eye.
“Because I’m going to take you out on a proper date.”

I didn’t say a word, but my heart raced near the surface of my chest.

“I want to take you out to dinner and then take you to bed.”

My breath caught. I lingered on the possibility of both those things. “What if I’m not tired?”

Jack’s smile was devious. “And it’ll be so good, you’ll beg me to be with you for the rest of our lives.”

I loved him even more for not giving up on me weeks ago when anyone else would have. “Why do you keep trying?”

“Because you’re worth it. I can feel it. We’re going to be great together. You just have to let me in.”

I started to pull my hands away, but Jack tightened his grip.
“Why does that scare you?”

“It doesn’t.” I was honest. His words didn’t scare me. “It’s just what I do.”

He released my hands. “Pull away?”

“Pretty much.” I kept my sight steady on him. The breeze blew around us, swirling our towels against our sides. “It’s rarely necessary, though. No one usually gets as close as you have.” I swallowed down the realization of how close he was.

“I’m special.”

“You are.” The words croaked out as if saying them was choking me. I was done lying to him.
