My Review:

Kaitlin Mayer will do anything to save her baby, her son’s life, save him from becoming a part of the undead community, a vampire even if she has to give up her son and her own life. When the opportunity arises Kaitlin takes her son and runs; runs for her life right into the hunter’s compound with her son. The way Kaitlin sees it this will be the safest place for her son. But when she gets inside she is not so sure that running to the compound was the right thing to do. But it will do for now, she will cross that bridge when it comes time to walk across it or not. For the time being she is just taking one day at a time and whatever opportunity opens up for her and her son she will take it.

Kaitlin finds out after arriving at the hunter’s compound that it may not be on the up and up, that things may not be like everyone’s is seeing it. While she is in the compound she meets up with an old friend or someone she knows at least. The person she runs into is her best friend Cassie’s ex-boyfriend, Matthew. Kaitlin is not real fond of Matthew because of what he did to Cassie. But if Matthew can help her save her son she will definitely let him.

Matthew is at the compound for reasons of his own and when he sees Kaitlin he realizes that Kaitlin may just be able to help him with his cause. She just may become an ally one that could become very useful. When they meet Matthew and Kaitlin alike will go to whatever extremes they need to in order to get what they want and for different reason of course.

Kaitlin is very tough woman who will do whatever it takes to save her baby. The vampires may want to watch out for Kaitlin. Why? Well because as they say you don’t want to miss with a woman’s baby. She just may bite you. Kaitlin is a very smart, clever woman who knows how to get what she wants. Kaitlin may not have any magical abilities of her own or does she? but she has a form of thrall that most women have when it comes to men and she knows she how to use it to get what she wants.

If you have not read Kaitlin’s Tale then I would highly recommend you do oh but even though Kaitlin’s Tale can be read as a standalone I would suggest that you read the Cassie Scot novels first that way you will know more about Kaitlin and the other characters and can get a better sense as to what is going on with a little more background on each character. I would recommend reading all of the Cassie Scot novels as well the companion stories too. They are all so aaammmazzzzzing!

Synopsis:

Tilly is a witch…at least, she thinks she is. All she really knows is that she has powers she shouldn’t, and that the cruel women she escaped from – who definitely are witches – will stop at nothing to make her their prisoner again because of those powers.

But Tilly has fallen in with a strange group – a pack of werewolves. The pack wants to protect her; none of them more so than Dominic, the alpha’s kind-hearted son. Tilly thinks she might be falling for him, but she can’t help being fascinated by his brooding, mysterious half-brother Spencer.
Caught between the two, Tilly isn’t sure anymore what she’s most scared of: the witches hunting her down, or her own heart betraying her.

Excerpt:

Shame and guilt warred with anger inside me. After how he’d treated me earlier, I should have hated Spencer. I didn’t. When I saw him sitting by the stream, I should have wanted to go over and scream in his face. I didn’t. Seeing him there, curled up with his head in his hands, clutching his hair like he was in pain, I just couldn’t hold on to my fury and hurt. I’d never seen him so discomposed, so rattled. It shook me, and I wondered what had him so upset. Was it me? Was this because of me? Or was it egotistical – maybe even stupid – of me to think that? To hope for it?

Abruptly he started pulling off his shoes and threw them carelessly, one landing in the stream. He shot to his feet, tugging off his t-shirt, and I bit my lip gingerly. The breeze swept a few strands of hair into my face and I brushed them back absently, but I saw Spencer freeze, tensing. He lowered his t-shirt back into place and stood, strung tight as a bow, staring into the water. I waited for him to do something else, to turn and walk away or to Change and vanish into the trees to prowl the night. He just stood there. Waiting.

        He knew I was there.

He was waiting for me to make a choice.

I could walk over there, or I could turn and leave.

I started to turn, my feet muffled on the dirt and moss, and then I paused, thinking of the way he’d been clutching his hair, growling, muttering to himself. I hesitated, uncertain. Words fought in my head: You understand me, Tilly…I said I love you…I don’t say things I don’t mean…I lied. I lied. He lied. He’d lied to me. But I was starting to wonder, watching him now, which time he’d really lied. I needed to know.

I stepped out of the trees. Spencer didn’t turn, though I noticed his head tilted ever so slightly in my direction, listening. For a moment, I just stood and stared at his back, the tight set of his shoulders, the curled weights of his fists at his sides. And then he spoke.

“What are you doing out here?” he asked, his voice flat. I recalled he’d asked the same thing in the exact same tone the first night I’d found him by the stream, chucking pebbles into the water. It felt like an eternity ago, though I knew it had only been a few weeks. Hell, yesterday felt like an eternity ago. Everything in my head was blurred, confused, jumbled. I rubbed my forehead, trying to focus, but all I could think of was Spencer’s eyes when he promised on the night of the full moon, after the attack, that he wouldn’t let anyone hurt me for any reason. He’d said so many things like that, been my saviour so many times.

EXCERPT:

Vanessa is sitting in a restaurant with Melanie, a woman in her early twenties with curly, dark hair.

“So anyway,” Melanie says. She is wearing chic business attire and diamond-studded hoop earrings. “He stopped by my cubicle this morning and asked me if I wanted to go with him to a party on Thursday. I told him, calmly, that I have to check my schedule.”

“Oh yeah,” Vanessa says. “That was a good response.”

“So what’s going on in married land?”

“Nothing much.”

“Are you sure? You’re kind of quiet,” Melanie says.

“Well, something strange happened last night,” Vanessa says.

“Like what?”

“When I was putting away the clothes, I saw a note on Peter's tablet. There was a woman's name and phone number on it. And today's date was in tiny print in the corner.”

“Did you ask him about it?” Melanie asks.

“No, I mean, I figured it could belong to a classmate or something.”

“Girl, you should’ve asked about it,” Melanie says.

“Then I woke up in the middle of the night and he was gone. And so was his cell phone.”

“And you didn't ask him about that either?”

Vanessa clasps her wedding rings. “Well, we're married, and I trust him.”

“Who are you trying to convince? Me or yourself? I think...”

“What really bothered me was that we had plans for dinner tonight. And when I reminded him this morning, he said he had a study group meeting tonight.”

“What?” Melanie says. “Did he just pull a study group out of his pocket? Since when does he have a ‘study group’?”

“That's what I said. Sort of. I asked what the study group was for.”

“And?”

“He said it was for some big legal case study for one of his classes,” Vanessa says.

“Did he mention this case before?”

“No! I know you don't really care for Peter, but I need some advice. I'm starting to get suspicious. I mean, I do trust him. But something isn't adding up.”

“All right,” Melanie says. “I have a suggestion. Please just listen to it. I think that you should follow him tonight. See...”

Vanessa yells. “Whaaat! Are you serious? I need real advice, not advice on how to spy on my husband.”

Several restaurant patrons turn around to look at them.

Melanie whispers under her breath. “If he’s cheating, then?”

“He’s not cheating,” Vanessa whispers back.

“Then what are you suspicious of?”

“I don’t know.”

“Girl, if you want the truth you have to find it out firsthand.”

“What do you mean?” She stops for a moment. “You know what, this is absurd,” Vanessa says.

“Peter is not going to tell you the real deal. If he's at a study group, fine. But if he's not, you need to know.”

“I feel so wrong. How dare I follow my husband?”

“I hope we are wrong. I’ll tell you this: You better start wondering how he dare hold a phone conversation in the middle of the night, in your apartment, running up your cell phone bill.”

“I don’t know.”

The waiter comes over.

“You don’t share the bills, Vanessa.”

“How is everything, ladies?”

“Fine. Can we get the check, please?” Melanie asks.

“Yes,” the waiter responds.

Re: Jason is Dead

Jason is dead.

Go ahead. Say “I told you so.” You never do, but just this once could you stoop down to the level of us mere mortals long enough to sneer like a ten-year-old? Put a little hip wiggle into it and wrinkle your nose. Roll your eyes at me like I'm the biggest moron on the planet.

After all you did, in fact, tell me so.

And when you're finished, I need you to do me the biggest favor I've ever asked in my life. In all likelihood, the last favor I'll ever ask. I need you to take Jay. I need you to keep him safe, because you and Evan are probably the only two people who can. I hope that one day you can find it in your heart to love him like you love your own daughter.
