CHAPTER ONE (first half)
The night was cool and thick as it sheathed me in total darkness. The satin shorts and camisole that I'd gone to bed in were now damp from the moisture hanging heavily in the air. Holding my hands in front of my body, I blindly wandered around in blackness as I tried to find some kind of clue that would give me a better picture. My bare feet told me that I was standing on soft ground, the tall grass tickling my calves as I moved. It was possible that I was in a large pasture, though the clean, crisp scent of the air let me know that no large animals were near.
Thunder cracked in the distance and the ominous, coal-black clouds had even chased the moon and stars into hiding, not even the faintest glow giving away their location. It took a moment, but my mind was finally beginning to recognize this place. This was a dream world, one that I'd seen before. With every passing night, with every passing dream, I was able to travel further and further into this illusion as I tried to discover its meaning. I'd had recurring dreams before, but there was something different, disturbing about this one that seemed to speak to me. There was something that I was supposed to learn here and I needed to find it.
The wind began to pick up and I looked to the north, the same direction that I looked to every night. Lightning cascaded across the sky, illuminating the massive, empty pasture in which I stood. The momentary flash brought something to my attention that I'd never seen in the dream before. Two figures stood off in the distance, several yards between them, facing off. Even with great distance between us, I could feel the tension rolling off of them. That must be the dark, heavy feeling in the air that I'd felt: anger, hatred.
Thunder rolled again as the lightning danced across the sky. Using the display to light my path, I ran toward the figures ahead of me. As I approached, a bolt of raw, electric energy reached down from the sky and ignited the immediate area in flames. The swift turn of events stopped me short, nearly throwing me to the ground. The flames spread into a perfect circle as it surrounded both figures, blocking any further approach by me. Sharp chills cut through me from head to toe as I realized that one of them was fully controlling the blaze.
Now that I was closer, I could tell that the figures were women. One woman, maybe an inch or two over five feet tall, stood around fifty feet away, and to my right. Her long, jet-black hair reached just below her hips and whipped around in the increasing wind. As I studied her, I began to see a deep-red, transparent cloud, like an aura surrounding her. She was strong, very strong, and I could feel her overwhelming power from here.
Looking to my left, her opponent was roughly the same height; only her hair was frosty white and hung to her knees. This woman was much different. She was surrounded by an aura cloud as well, though hers was dark blue. Something about her called to me and it took everything I had not to trudge barefooted through the flames to reach her.
Rain began to fall and quickly soaked everything around us, though it was still unable to extinguish the fire. Movement brought me to attention as the white haired woman lifted her arms. The earth began to quake beneath me as it broke free all around her. She looked like a dancer as she maneuvered her body, forcing the element into submission under her power. The packed earth sailed through the air towards the dark haired woman, but she was quick to react.
In a flash, she completely disappeared from my sight, managing to dodge the attack. My eyes moved quickly as I focused to find her. My body locked up as my vision was suddenly clouded with the mysterious dark haired woman as she appeared before me, seemingly out of nowhere. Her dark, emerald green eyes and dilated coal-black pupils stared into mine, glinting in the firelight. Her raven hair seemed alive as it brushed my skin and sent tingles running through my body. Her flawless, olive-toned skin nearly glowed as she stood there, concern in her expression.
"Kailah." As her soft, sweet voice spoke my name, I inhaled sharply. Though her mouth barely moved as she spoke my name, her perfect, white teeth showed just enough for me to make out four tiny, yet still elongated, razor sharp fangs. My heart fluttered rapidly as I wondered if this woman was the creature that she appeared to be, and if so, how did she know me and what did she want with me?
"Y-yes?" I stammered.
"This is not a dream, Kailah. It's a warning." She leaned in closer. "Run," she whispered.
"Wait, what?" I asked, chills once again stabbing me like thousands of needles running from the roots of my hair to the bare, wet soles of my feet.
"Run!"
As soon as I turned to run, the dark thunder cracked overhead and the lightning began touching the ground all around me, trying to hold me where I stood. I heard a loud growl sound out from behind me, but decided not to look back. The earth began to shake again and my bare feet slid on the wet grass, the soft ground cushioning me as I fell hard on my right hip.
"Hello Kailah." The new voice sent a shiver down my spine as I looked into the icy blue eyes of the white-haired woman.
Though her hair would have suggested otherwise, she looked no older than me: around twenty. Her skin was also olive toned and absolutely flawless, just like the other woman. Though, normally, one would look to the light as salvation and the darkness as hell, I didn't think that was the case in this situation. Her crystalline blue eyes had death in them and I found myself backing away from her, toward the raven-haired beauty.
She laughed and the sound enveloped me like frigid water. "Kailah, you would choose the Vampire over your own grandmother?"
Before I could digest the words that she had unleashed on me, her attention shifted and the blue aura cloud surrounding her exploded into a barrier. Instinctively, my eyes closed and I threw my hand out as a large throwing knife bounced off the cloudy shield and headed for me.
"It is you!" she said with wonder.
My eyes snapped open and surrounding my hand was the same blue energy that surrounded the white-haired woman, only mine had a throwing knife buried in it. I couldn't stop the scream that bubbled up out of my throat as the energy dissipated and the knife fell in my lap. What the hell was going on?
Her attention shifted again and with soft, graceful movements, a lightning bolt responded as it split from the sky and reached for her outstretched hand. She caught the energy easily before throwing it at her opponent. Another loud growl sounded out only a moment before something slammed hard into the barrier. That something, I realized, was the woman she had referred to as the Vampire.
Dark red energy swelled around the supposed Vampire as she pushed against the barrier of the opposing woman. "Kailah! She can find you in your dreams! Go, now!" As soon as the order left the raven-haired beauty's lips, energy exploded from her body as the white-haired woman was thrown several feet away. "This dream is a figment of your own mind but, make no mistake, this is a premonition. You are the key to ending this war and if she finds you, it will doom all humans to a fate worse than death. Leave this realm now and prepare your mind. Your life is about to change."

OVERGROWTH BY MAC ROME

 photo OverGrowth-large1.jpg

Genre: Sci-Fi

Andrea Carlin made herself into the superheroine Overgrow in an effort to save the man she loved. She failed. Taking her first steps to love again, she begins dating the handsome Lee. But is she so strong now she must become weak to keep his love?

Excerpt:

"You!" Magmar screeched, pointing a smoldering finger at Overgrow. "It's your fault I'm here! I'm taking you down, and I'm taking him with me!"

Andrea wasn't surprised to see who Magmar meant by "him." It was assistant public defender Lee Seneca, the most junior public defender, which made him the one who consistently drew the cases of supervillains. Magmar had wrapped one steaming arm around Seneca's neck. Andrea could see what looked like elongated metal handcuffs on her wrists, but with molten metal in the area nearest her hands, and the chains between the shackles melted. She recognized them as the remains of one part of a set of power inhibitor bonds on the wrist of the arm holding Seneca. Normally, the inhibitor bonds would have covered the wearer's hands. Andrea had designed the inhibitor technology police now used to restrain supervillains like Magmar. The bonds were supposed to safely redirect energy powers from their intended target. How Magmar had been able to power up and melt the bonds, Andrea didn't know. At the moment, it didn't matter.

Magmar pointed her free hand to the ground. The earth shook. A spike of rock extended up to the height of the window where she was. She dove out, dragging Seneca with her.

The strain of what Magmar was doing showed on Seneca's face. Andrea could see his skin getting redder. She knew it could be from either being dragged by the neck or how hot Magmar's body temperature was becoming.

Dropping to her knees, Andrea grew to 120 feet tall. That gave her the reach she needed to swing her right arm hard enough to cause the projecting rock to vibrate. Magmar lost her balance as well as her grip on Seneca, who plummeted off the side of the ziggurat of stone.

Andrea somersaulted, shrinking as she did. Dropping to 50 feet tall, she sat under the plunging Seneca, who fell into the Overgrow costume's plunging neckline.

Andrea smiled as she looked down into her cleavage. "You all right, Mr. Seneca?'

After Seneca glanced around, he smiled up at Overgrow. "Never better!"

The superheroine was already looking up at Magmar. The villainess was glowing red-hot, positioning her arms to fire some sort of blast at Overgrow.

Confident, Andrea simply raised her arm as Magmar's lava blast sprayed out at her. As Andrea expected, it had no effect on her. Using her massive hand to surround the villainess, she stood up awkwardly. Andrea held Magmar up as high as she could, minimizing her contact with the source of her power.

"Amazing! How can you stand up to her lava blasts like that?"

Andrea smiled down at Seneca. "I'll explain it sometime." She wrapped her other hand around the one holding Magmar. "I'm afraid I have both hands full with this handful, Mr. Seneca. I'll need to leave you where you are for a while. Is that OK?"

Seneca grinned goofily. "Absolutely!" Andrea thought he was trying a little too hard to sound calm.

It was only about six minutes before police arrived with an inhibitor cage to contain Magmar. Andrea tossed her into the cage through its open top.

Andrea slid a finger between her boobs and beneath Seneca, gently lifting him out. "Thank you for being a gentleman in there."

Seneca shrugged. "I didn't want to wind up facing some sort of criminal charge for what I did in there, but it was certainly the biggest temptation I've ever faced!"

Andrea chuckled lightly. She looked around the area. She pointed to a rooftop immediately to the north of the building housing the public defender office. "Can I talk to you up there for a moment?"

"Sure." Seneca looked confused.

Andrea shot up to 500 feet, placed a foot over the building, then shrank to Overgrow's usual height of six-foot-four. As she reduced, she placed Seneca near her on the roof.

Seneca straightened his clothing, standing his full six-foot-two. "So, what's up?"

Andrea stood in front of him, looking awkward. She flipped her hair back over her ear. "Are you free tonight?"

Seneca blinked his eyes three times. "Yeah. I mean, yes, I am."

Andrea reached into a hidden pocket in the Overgrow costume's cape. She handed its contents to Seneca. "Come to this address tonight at 6:30. If you want to, that is."

Seneca looked at her, his eyes wide. "Overgrow, are you asking me out on a date?"

EXCERPT

Emotions were usually pretty deep with him. He didn't like to let them get too near the surface. But for just a moment, he'd stopped and turned slowly, taking it all in, remembering a past that could never be again, missing it, missing home and actually feeling a slight stinging in his eyes.

And that was when she got him.

"Okay, you bastard, hold it right there. Don't make a move."

At the same moment the voice hit him, both barrels of a shotgun were jammed very hard and very painfully into the small of his back, and he groaned in disbelief. He hadn't even heard her coming up behind him. He shook his head. He was losing it.

"I'd like to blast a hole right through you. How would you like that, you slime ball?"

"Hey, hold on just a minute..."

The barrel jabbed him. "Don't try to talk, dirt bag. Just start walking. I'm going to walk you right off my land, and then I'm going to call the cops. And the next time you come slinking around I'm going to blow your brains out. You got that?" She jabbed him again to get him going toward the road. "And you can tell Bart Carlson I'll do the same for any other of his pathetic flunkies that he sends over here to screw up my life."

It took only one quick twist and a little leverage, and he had her on the ground, his big body holding hers down, the shotgun wrenched from her grasp and sent spinning in the dust.

But that didn't mean she gave up. Not by any means. She fought like a wildcat, spitting and scratching at him with fury. It took both his hands to hold down hers, and the full length of his body to hold her captive.

"Cut it out, Annie," he growled at her, annoyed that she wasn't giving up even once she'd realized his superior strength. "I'm not going to hurt you."

The sound of her name was what seemed to still her for a moment. She stared up at him and he stared down at her, wondering if she had any idea that they had known each other before.

She'd changed. But her hair was still blond, still a mass of shimmering tangles that seemed to go on forever. Her body was still slim and lithe, but there was a strength to her he wouldn't have thought she would ever possess. She was still squirming beneath him, but it was beginning to feel good. He glanced at her cotton blouse, all askew and revealing the soft curve of her breast and a tiny strip of lace.

"Don't," she spat at him fiercely.

He looked up. Her face was older, naturally. The crystal blue eyes he remembered so vividly were wary, haunted by pain and struggle she couldn't have dreamed of in her younger days. And she wasn't laughing. In his memories, she was always laughing.

There was no sign of recognition. Didn't anybody remember him? Had he been erased from the minds of an entire community?

In a world ravaged by the plague women have become a new form of currency. Bartered, traded, and abused they suffer under tyranny. One woman dared to be different.

Devon Brown spent the past eight years operating under the guise of being a male. The daughter of a Forest Ranger, she peddled her skills as she moves from town to town. This time her luck runs out when she's discovered, and brought in to the leaders of the town, Cain and Cole Hart. Instead of being ejected, the attractive males, with the dangerous aura opt to keep her.

This is her story of what happened after the world burned.

EXCERPT

Devon Brown walked the perimeter of the dust laden gas station with broken windows and a sagging red awning. On the outskirts of town, the gray building went unnoticed by most in the town. Traffic this far away from the revived area they lived and worked in remained scarce, and she took making her way here every time. Three months into this new place, she fit in well. She didn't want to upset the balance she'd found. Her eyes scanned the barren landscape. The chilly air carried the promise of winter. Frost formed in the mornings. It wouldn't be long before they saw their first snow and this treks would become more difficult.

Her mind shifted to her new housemate, David. Due to his presence she hadn't risked a full bath in a week. Hiding her secret got tricky with the young boy with hero worship dogging her every step. Privacy disappeared in this new society where the main goal was to live. Still, she enjoyed the jovial brunette. In his early twenties, he'd adjusted to life after the plague ten years prior a lot easier than those who'd had a lifetime of normalcy. His optimistic countenance presented a pleasant change from the doom and gloom, survival of the fittest jungle the world had become.

As on only child she'd lost her entire family when her folks fell victim to the mysterious strain of flu that crept into the population and never left. The supped up version of the Influenza took millions to their graves, and tossed the world into chaos. Raised on the good book, she'd thought it'd been the end of days.  If only I'd been so lucky.

Satisfied the integrity of the place held, she walked over to the bathroom door. The door creaked from disuse and she stepped inside, swiftly shutting the door behind her. A huge sigh of relief escaped her lungs, and she locked the door. For a short time, the burden of pretending to be something she wasn't lifted off her drooping shoulders. The daughter of a Forest Ranger she knew how to survive. So, when women became the new currency she'd lopped off her shoulder length black locks, lowered her voice and peddled her skills as Devon Brown, the man.

She removed her book bag off her shoulders, placed it on the ground, and pulled out her necessary items, placing them on the counter she'd personally cleansed weeks ago. Prepped, she shrugged out of her flannel and stripped down to her underwear, bra and bindings. When her Double D's became a feature that could endanger her freedom she'd said goodbye to femininity.  She unwrapped the ace bandage and sucked in a deep breath of freedom. The uncomfortable feeling of being held tight never fully dissipated.  Clad in skivvies, she turned on the faucet full force and picked up a bar of homemade soap and washcloth.

She plunged her hand beneath the icy spray and built up a lather, flinching when she ran the soapy cloth over her torso. Her teeth chattered as she rinsed the material out and moved down her legs, saving her private area for last. Sure, a vagina didn't shrink a penis, but the chill damn near burned. She pushed down the tighty whiteys she'd pilfered from the store, and ran the soft cloth across her center.  The door swung open in mid swipe with a loud bang. Blinding light flooded the dimly light room.

Her jaw dropped and her mind short circuited, refusing to process properly. Micah filled the door frame with his broad shoulders.  A villainous smirk spread across his thin lips. The lust visible in his dark blue eyes made her stomach lurch.

"I knew there was something off about you."

She yanked up her underwear.  He gave her a slow one over. Her skin crawled. The man rubbed her the wrong way. Rough, crude, and manipulative, Micah screamed untrustworthy.

"What are you going to do?"  She covered her breasts and shifted her weight, taking an aggressive stance. If she had to go down, it'd be fighting.

"Honey you know what I'm going to do." An evil sneer twisted his Cupid 's bow lips into something evil. "But I'll be kinder than most, and keep you for myself instead of sharing you around. Pussy is power, and yours is untapped."

She balled her fists. "I have rights, and I'm an asset. Not like the others."

He laughed. "Won't matter, Now put your clothes on. Don't want to get jumped for my new pieces of ass before I can take it out for a spin. We're going to see the Harts."

Her panic spiked. Cole and Cain ran the tiny town with an iron fist. After they accepted her into their fold, and placed her in charge of overseeing water purification, she did everything possible to gain their trust, and stay well under their radar. The chiseled faced, hard bodied brothers were straight shooters. They didn't stand for deceit, cheating, or withholding. Ex bar owners with numerous run-ins with the law, the two possessed a dangerous edge that made her tread lightly. Her knees wobbled, and she leaned against the sink to stay upright. The cool porcelain grounded her. Brought her back to reality.

"I'd leave you to change, but I know how wily you are, and let's face it. I'm enjoying the view. It's been a long time since I saw a woman as good looking as you. No bruises, dead eyes, or sloppiness." He licked his lips. "We're going to have fun. I never had a chocolate cupcake before. Do you have a creamy center?" His boots thudded against the faded white tiles as he stalked over and paused a few inches away.

"You look so soft." He trailed a finger down her face, and she jerked turning her face from his caress.

"Don't touch me."  She barred her teeth.

"Time to get acclimated to it, sweetheart."  He moved his hand to grip her breast, and she smacked it away.

"Nothing's been decided, and I swear to you. If you try to claim me, it'll be the last thing you do."   I didn't fight tooth and nail all this time to end up some sex toy to this sadistic fuck.

"It's the new world order. Your opinions don't matter for shit, sweetheart."

"I live by my own set of rules."  She balled her hands into fists, drawing strength from her anger.

"Maybe when you were thought to be a man."

"Always." She narrowed her eyes.

"We'll see."

She huffed, and pulled on her clothing, head held high. After starring death in the face, she'd be damned if she fell to pieces over this spineless piece of maggot shit.
