Blog Tour + #Giveaway: The Siren Wakes by JA Hayman @JAHaymanWrites @starange13

 Title: The Siren Wakes
Series: The Sleeper Series #1
By: J.A. Hayman
Publication Date: August 10, 2016
Publisher: Clean Reads
Genre: SciFi/Thriller

Alex wakes in a field with no recollection of how he got there. He is accused of lying about his identity by the police and told his memories are false. He is forced on the run by the corrupt government or face almost certain death. Alex is led on a journey of self discovery, searching for the truth behind the sickness which plagues the country and searching for the truth behind his identity.

Who can you trust.. when you can’t trust yourself?

In the corner of my eye I spotted something behind Terry. There was a man. A man walking by. He looked just like me. It was like looking in a mirror, and my mind struggled to comprehend how this could be possible. He glanced at me before scurrying off into the stairwell. I stood up in a daze and walked to the corridor. Terry protested, but I just ignored him. I reached the empty stairwell perplexed.

Feeling inexplicably drawn to the man, I ran out into the stairwell. I felt like I had to find out why he looked just like me; was this some sort of bizarre prank? The man was gone. I looked down the middle of the staircase, but he wasn’t there. I sprinted up the stairs toward the roof, leaving Terry floundering in the stairwell entrance, unsure what to do. My footsteps thudded as I paced upward, anticipating what could be happening, but when I threw open the roof door, I found the roof to be empty. There was no way the man could have gone anywhere else, but he simply wasn’t there. Terry caught up to me. “You...okay there, man?” he said, panting. He wasn’t the most interesting man I knew; however, he was kind, which meant he was decent friend material, not to say I wouldn’t ditch him if someone else swooped into my desolate life. I was confused. I was sure I had seen someone a moment ago, but no one was out on the roof. I gave a nervous laugh, scratching at my palm. “I thought I saw something.” Giving him a meek look, I returned to the stairwell. Maybe I was just tired and seeing things. Could have I fallen asleep for a moment and dreamed it? It’s hard to determine a dream from reality; in a dream everything seems to make sense, only upon waking do you realize the absurdity of it all.
Native to the UK, I was born in the Garden of England in the early 90s.

I was creative from a young age, always wrapped up in my own world and fantasies. I was a big reader from a young age, reading Les Miserables and Lord of the Rings while I was still in primary school.

I was fortunate enough to be able to travel a lot in my youth, from Hong Kong to Houston I experienced the world and gained a greater perspective of the world outside my small woodland village I grew up in.

In secondary school I was told I was too cynical to be a writer and was put off writing for many years.

Instead I pursued a degree in Physical Geography, gaining my Masters degree in late 2015.

University gave me time to really discover myself as a person. Allowing me to pursue my passions and dreams to their fullest. I want to share my stories and ideas with the world. As a child I hungrily devoured fiction and now I will help feed the minds of others.

Book Blitz + #Giveaway: Last Chance: A Second Chances Novel by L.P. Dover @LPDover @XpressoTours

Last Chance: A Second Chances Novel
L.P. Dover
Publication date: August 30th 2016
Genres: New Adult, Romance, Suspense

One last chance.

That’s all Luke Collins, local bad boy and motocross champion, has to not only find his redemption, but win back the girl he lost. He’ll stop at nothing to make her his, even if it means playing dirty.

Lara Jacobs doesn’t want her heart broken again and refuses to give Luke a second chance. After he left her after their one night stand, she ran right into the arms of her close friend, Grayson Moore. He’s always loved her, and he’s determined to make her see he’s what she needs.

However, in life nothing goes as planned and tragedy strikes. After a fatal accident nearly claims Lara’s life, she’s left inside a world she can’t remember. Her memories are gone, including those of the men vying for her heart. Grayson sees her loss as a possibility to forget her love for Luke, but Luke sees it as an opportunity to start over. All he wants is one last chance to show her that she’s the one he’s been in love with all along.

*** An updated version of One Taste (prequel to Last Chance) has been included at the beginning of the book with all new scenes. ***

EXCERPT:

“Why can’t I go in there and tell her I’m sorry? She needs to hear it from me.”

“No, she doesn’t because she won’t believe it. You need to do a lot more than tell her you’re sorry. Actions speak louder than words. And until you can show everyone you’ve changed, it’s best you stay away from her. It’ll only make things worse.”

“What if I go in there anyway?” I questioned, crossing my arms over my chest. I didn’t want to fight Evan, but I was getting desperate. I needed her forgiveness, for her to know I never meant to hurt her.
Evan huffed and closed his eyes. “You’ll have to go through me first. Lara doesn’t want to see you. She’s with someone else now.”

It was as if someone had sucker punched me in the gut, the air being ripped out of my lungs as I took the hit. Summer groaned and I glared at her. “Is that true?”

“Yes, but I don’t see how that is any of your business. She’s happy, so leave her be.”

“Fuck that,” I shouted. “I’m going inside.” I tried to push past Evan, but he blocked me. We faced off with each other, the tension rising.

Summer stepped between us with a hand on each of our chests. “Guys, this is stupid. You’re friends.”

I scoffed and backed away. “That’s where I beg to differ,” I said, glaring at Evan. “If our situations were reversed and it was Summer inside, I’d let you go to her. I would give you the benefit of the doubt and accept that you’ve changed. But you’re not going to do that, are you?”

Evan’s face softened and he sighed. “I would, brother, but this night is special for Summer and Lara. The last thing they need is you and Grayson battling it out. I have no doubt he’ll come after you if you go in there.”

I faltered, the anger welling in my chest. “Fucking Grayson? That’s who she’s with?”

“Can you blame her? He was there for her, after everything you put her through,” Summer said.
Peering down at her, I hoped she could see the determination in my face. “You tell her it’s not over. I’m not going to give up.” With those final words, I jumped in my truck and sped out of the parking lot. The thought of Grayson touching her made me so goddamn furious. I didn’t care if she was with him . . . I wasn’t going to give up.

Book Blitz + #Giveaway: The Retreat by Kelly St. Clare @KellyStClare @XpressoTours

The Retreat
Kelly St. Clare
(The After Trilogy, #1)
Publication date: August 30th 2016
Genres: Science Fiction, Young Adult

Earth is ruined. Humankind destroyed. And it’s old news.

Romy’s life is simple—for a genetically enhanced space soldier; pick up space junk with her four friends, and stave off the invaders fixated on stealing Planet Earth.
It isn’t much. But it’s temporary—only another 850 years to go, give or take.

When her crew tangles with a gulp-worthy alien mothership, Romy’s return to Earth is brought forwards at hurtling pace.

Strength comes from the unlikeliest of quarters.

As does leadership.

…As does betrayal.

EXCERPT:

Romy’s side of the battler must have torn away during landing. Only a few shredding battler walls remained. It was as though her side of the ship had been ripped off like a chunk of bread from a loaf.
The floor underneath her was gone, leaving her legs dangling. Romy herself was suspended by the harness, which dug into her torso. It was the only thing keeping her from falling three metres to the dry grass.

The bottom part of her battler segment had embedded itself into the ground on an angle. Romy’s end of the segment was immobilised in the air, forty-five degrees to the surface. She looked to have landed at the edge of a grassy clearing. Or maybe a forest, she amended, judging by the multitudes of trees before her.

Behind her, the ripped walls were flayed wide open, smoking, sparking, and hissing.
She took in the vast splash of colours before her with unseeing eyes. She was on Earth. Hanging above real ground.

Quite alone. And if her knot hadn’t . . . survived . . . she was quite possibly the only person, or being, on the planet. A numbness set in so deep that Romy could no longer feel the harness. Her head drooped as she struggled to regain her calm. She had to find her friends. That was an absolute. They were alive. She had to believe it was true.

She waited, willing her shaking hands to still until eventually they obeyed.

Inhaling sharply, Romy looked around once more.

The question was: How far did her section of the craft land from the others?

If it were a matter of hours, that would be okay, but anything more and she would require food and water. A post-global-warming Earth meant the food and water here wasn’t safe. The yellowed plant life confirmed that. The battler held supplies, but did she have any in her part? And how much oxygen was in her suit? Romy’s heart began to quicken once more, and she forced the unfamiliar fear away.

First priority was getting to the ground. Under normal conditions she would take the chance and jump the three metres, but the injury to her ankle and the extent of the damage to her head caused Romy to hesitate. If only she could take her suit helmet off . . . but the air conditions had to be terrible. She wouldn’t last five seconds.

No, she decided. She’d pull herself up onto the back of her seat and see if there was an easier way out from the back of the smoking wreckage.

She sighed in weary exhaustion, not sure she had the strength to move a single finger. But that wouldn’t help her friends.

Romy released one half of her harness. Holding tightly to the strap, she released the second half of the harness—

Something gave. Not the harness, but whatever it was attached to, or attached with. For a moment Romy thought she might be able to salvage the tatters of her plan and still climb up. Until, with a loud ripping, the harness tore free from the rest of the chair.

Character Interview: Romy

From The Retreat by Kelly St. Clare

Interviewer: Weiv Retni

Weiv Retni: Romy, a pleasure to meet you! Please come in and sit down. You’ve travelled here all the way from space, you must be tired.

Romy: I have. Well, from 400km into space, anyway. I suppose there are further distances to travel, technically speaking. Though I have come from 150 years into the future, too.

Weiv Retni: LOL – just casually. That must be amazing! What’s it like? Oops, sorry, I’ll wait until you have a sip of your tea.

Romy: *gulps quickly and laughs* That’s okay. I know earth humans view life in space as incredible. To be honest, I find your life here much more interesting! Space is just picking up debris and eating dehydrated food. There is so much room down here on Earth. So much colour. It’s vibrant.

Weiv Retni: I mean … you also blow apart aliens for a living.

Romy: There is that. The critamal want to inhabit the Earth – now it is in the midst of global warming. My team is called up maybe once a month for battle. We’re … how do you say it? Not highly ranked. If we’re not picking up junk after the battle, we’re on kitchen duty.

Weiv Retni: … I guess picking up rubbish is cool, too?

Romy: It’s really not.

Weiv Retni: At least you have some cool friends. What is your team called again?

Romy: Space soldiers aboard the orbitos are split into groups of five, called knots. I’m in Knot 27.

Weiv Retni: And Knot 27 is made up of Deimos and Phobos?

Romy: Everyone calls them the twins. They look nothing alike, aside from their green eyes, but they’re hardly ever apart. Thrym would tell you they’re the reason Knot 27 is so poorly ranked.

Weiv Retni: Thrym?

Romy: Another friend from Knot 27. My best friend. I feel for him, sometimes, he really drew the short straw when the knots were decided. I know he’d like to have a higher position. But he’s too nice to really make a big deal out of it.

Weiv Retni: And Elara?

Romy: Feisty and lazy, all at once. All space soldiers are genetically enhanced to “supposedly” get rid of these kinds of traits. Somehow Elara still manages to possess them. I love her.

Weiv Retni: I know you said space is same-old before. But it boggles my mind. What do you do all day?

Romy: When I’m not on duty, I’m reading everything I can about Earth on my nanopad. And I also like to sit in on the cadet’s lectures. I’ve heard everything dozens of times, but it makes me feel like the return to Earth is a little closer – instead of 850 years away.

Weiv Retni: …850 years…why don’t you just go now?

Romy: Uh…what year is this?

Weiv Retni: 2016.

Romy: By 2050 the world will be on the cusp on global warmingand in anarchy. The last recorded interaction with humans on Earth was 2060. In recent years, our researchers have confirmed that humankind are no longer in existence on Planet Earth.

Weiv Retni: WHAT! I’m only seventeen! You’re telling me I’ve only got 34 years left to live?!

Romy: You *might* have 44 years. But yes, you, your family, and everyone you know will die.

Weiv Retni: Crapola. Guess I better start stockpiling baked beans and cream rice.

Romy: You’d do better to try and lobby for solutions to global warming. You still have time.

Weiv Retni: Good idea! I’ll put it on my ‘to do’ list. But back to you, you’ll get back to Earth, right? How can you live for 850 years?

Romy: One day, if I’m very, very lucky, I’ll see Earth again. If I avoid being blown up, ’ll just continue to be recycled every 23 years. Unless something else bad happens. But things hardly ever go wrong.

Weiv Retni: Yikes…let’s hope those aren’t famous last words!

“I’m Jason Lewis.” I held out my hand for him to shake.

“Maxwell Craver.” His strong, calloused grip enveloped my hand. He put a little too much force in the shake, but I liked it rough. Just a little. Pain and pleasure mixed together was quite a sexual experience. The pain of being penetrated at first had been a lot for me, I wouldn’t deny that, but the gentle caress of a strong hand, the cupping of my balls as I felt my release… it was a sensation I had missed. It’d been a while since I’d had sex, and as I watched this man, his sex appeal, it brought back all those wonderful memories.

“Craver, huh? You own this place?” I motioned toward the Craver Automotive sign over the shop.

“Family shop. Dad still owns it,” he mumbled as he walked toward the office and I allowed myself the opportunity to admire the view. He moved the rag he’d used to clean his hands to his back pocket and it was a wonderful sight. A wonderful round, tight sight.

“Are you coming? We can talk about your car.” Maxwell held open the door to the office and I quickly caught up.

“Sorry,” I mumbled. I did this a lot. Admired men from afar. It was no secret I was gay. Just a lack of suitable men who piqued my interest. I didn’t do the flamboyant type. Not that it bothered me at all, I just liked a manly man. A man who liked to get dirty. I smiled to myself. Oh yes, a man who liked to get dirty, like the one standing in front of me.

Mysterious, romantic, and sprinkled with a few heartwarming students and a delightful dog, LETTERS, LOVERS, & LIES captures the importance of persistence and the power of love.
Jake and Lindsey are in love, but so much stands in their way. Letters from a dead man. Unwanted advances from a transgender acquaintance. Separation and jealousy. A few things in the couple’s favor? They are smart, multi-talented, and they love to laugh.

Lindsey Lark, keynote speaker, goes on tour while her boyfriend, Jake, writes a detective novel. Sounds simple enough, but a mystery soon dominates their lives when bizarre notices of her ex-husband’s funeral arrive. Foul play is suspected and murder is on someone’s mind.

Lad, a retired Secret Service agent, is Lindsey’s right-hand man for the duration of the tour. He’s handsome, he’s a man of few words, and, as the list of threats lengthens, he takes on the role of bodyguard, much to Jake’s dismay.

Thrilling, romantic, and sprinkled with humor, HIT THE ROAD, JAKE! reinvents the ‘buddy movie’ concept with the written word … and a pretty woman.

Jake and Lindsey were good at tracking down offenders responsible for petty theft and blackmail, but when new mysteries turned personal—slashed tires, spattered blood, steamy love letters, a stolen pet, everything changed. Who was this enemy that secretly harassed them from town to town? Jake called in some favors and managed to finagle the DNA testing of several blood samples. The results were shocking, and the dangers they faced became deadly.

Practically newlyweds, the couple thought they’d created the perfect win-win plan. While traveling between Tucson and Estes Park in their RV, Jake would solve embarrassing mysteries that schools wished to keep under wraps, and Lindsey, being the ‘cover’ for their presence, would conduct workshops for teachers. Then all hell broke loose.

Praise for Hit the Road, Jake!

Excerpt

No pillow talk or sweet words were uttered. Lost in our own tiny space on the planet, we were too breathless to speak. Then, another surprise . . . in one swift and masterful movement I found myself gazing up at Jake’s loving face, which was framed by pine tree branches and glimmers of sunshine. He’d made it to the top without skipping a beat or the rocking rhythm, and so we continued. Oh, the sounds of love. The heavy breathing, the not breathing, the moaning, the groaning . . . the groaning? The groaning wasn’t us.

I tapped Jake on his back and whispered, “Jake, I hear something.”

“Me, too, my forest nymph babe, and I’m loving what I’m hearing.”

“Then you are not hearing what I’m hearing.”

“It’s probably just another deer or . . . wait, I heard it. That was neither a deer nor a squirrel.”

That was no longer a funny word, still interesting to Wendell, but not funny to us. The groaning, the creaking, was like something from a monster movie and it was getting louder and closer. We noticed that the dog was sitting, staring specifically in one direction. He didn’t look terribly anxious, but he was, without a doubt, alert and listening to the noise, too.

Our magical moment was gone. We’d find it again some other day, but for now, we needed to get back to the safety of the RV. A low-pitched squeaking noise that reminded me of fingernails on a chalkboard (really big fingernails) joined forces with the groaning for a few seconds. The combination sent chills up my spine. Wendell’s bravery waned and he whimpered. He had no frame of reference to make sense of all this. Well, neither did we. If Jake or I had been sitting on the ground, Wendell would have suddenly transformed into a lap dog. No laps were available so he merely leaned up against me. I gave his ears a rub and a tickle, just the way he liked it. We were all feeling tense.

“Jake!” I didn’t need to yell, he was only a couple of feet away hurrying into his clothing, but I couldn’t help it. I wanted to run. With his pants now on, he was ready to comfort me and the dog before taking on the woodland monster. We knew the general direction the sounds were coming from, but still we saw nothing.

Then came the snapping, the splintering, the crashing. We stood paralyzed . . . it took a few seconds for us to comprehend the source of those sounds. The ground beneath us trembled with each impact. Boom! Thud! Thump! Then, it was over. What followed was an eerie, profound silence.

A dead, medium-sized pine tree had fallen in the forest and taken two smaller trees along with it. We all ran over to get a closer look at the phenomenon.

“You heard all that, right?” Jake had regained his sense of humor.

“Yes,” I answered, now able to smile, too. “Three trees fell in the forest and I heard them all.”

“But you know, we’re lucky that I selected that spot over there for our nap.” He pointed in the direction of our bed of pine needles. “Or this could have ended badly. We could have been killed.”

“But it didn’t. We’re still here, alive and well. And I am very thankful for that.”

“Let’s go home. I need another nap.”

About the Author

Cricket Rohman grew up in Estes Park, Colorado, and spent her formative years among deer, bobcats, coyotes and beautiful blue columbine. Today she is a full-time author writing about the great outdoors, teachers, dogs, love, laughter, and life’s little mysteries—think romantic suspense.

Prior to writing, Cricket's career path included the following adventures: actor, singer, audio/video producer, classroom teacher, school principal, and U of A, College of Education assistant professor. All of the above led the way to her first three novels, WANTED: AN HONEST MAN … LETTERS, LOVERS, & LIES … and HIT THE ROAD, JAKE!
