Blog Tour + #Giveaway: The Tokyo Cover Girls by Jackie Amsden @jackiecamsden @XpressoTours

The Tokyo Cover Girls
Jackie Amsden
(The Tokyo Cover Girls , #1)
Publication date: April 28th 2016
Genres: Mystery, Young Adult

New York has Jacobs, Paris has Chanel, Milan has Versace and Tokyo has . . . Hello Kitty toilet plungers? With its cute-obsessed catalogue and magazine market, anyone who is anyone knows that modeling in Japan means being at the bottom of the fashion industry. Blake, Jess, and Hailey are doing their best to survive yet another casting where pigtails and toddler-impressions are a must when they stumble upon the opportunity of a lifetime. The prestigious Satsujin company has selected them to compete for a campaign that will transform the winner from commercial nobody to haute couture superstar faster than you can say Vogue Italia.

Of course, nothing is ever what it seems in the fashion world. Just ask all those dead girls . .

Interview with Jackie Amsden

What inspired you to write The Tokyo Cover Girls?

When I was sixteen I moved to Tokyo to work as a fashion model. The night I arrived the agency dropped me off in a tiny, empty apartment. The shower  stank of sewer, the bed was about a foot too short, and worst of all, the phone was restricted to local numbers so I couldn’t call my parents to tell them I was okay. I never felt more alone than I did laying on that bed with my feet hanging over the edge that first night.

Over the next few years, the main adults in my life were modelling agents. Though they were nice on the surface, they treated me like a thing instead of a person. They often withheld information from me or straight up lied to me, and they were constantly telling me what I could and couldn’t do—get a tan, lose weight, gain weight, smile more, don’t drink, drink more. If I didn’t obey them they would discipline me in the most humiliating of ways. One time my agent insisted on taking my measurements in the middle of the street and in front of all the other models (just as one of the characters experiences in the novel). She clearly was doing it to punish me—it wasn’t as if my hips were going to balloon into twice their normal size if she had waited the five minutes it would have taken us to go somewhere more private—yet in typical agent fashion she pretended like she was simply following protocol.

I felt very powerless during my time in the industry and eventually had to quit altogether. In my book, I tried to recreate that feeling by putting my characters into an extreme version of the manipulation and control I experienced—with of course much deadlier consequences.

When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

I have been writing stories for as long as I can remember. When I was ten I snuck out of the house with my friends. Three kids wandering the city streets at 1 am—we got picked up by a police car and delivered home pretty fast. I’ll never forget the look of horror on my mom’s face as a man in a blue uniform shone a flashlight in her face and yelled ‘Vancouver Police!” However, instead of grounding me, my parents made me write a story about it.

However, despite all the writing I did as a child and the countless diaries I filled as a teen, it wasn’t till I was in my thirties that I started to believe I had something to say and started delving into fiction writing.

What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

One of the first books I remember reading was Cinderella. The scene I always loved most was when she first steps into the ballroom and everyone is so taken by her beauty that they stop and stare. I think one of the main reasons I wanted to become a model was so that I would experience that kind of admiration—so that people would see my face on a Vogue cover and stop and stare at me. Though I never did get my Vogue cover, I did get to experience that moment in lots of other ways (whenever someone asked me where I got my satin pants, I would make sure to pause dramatically before I delivered my response: on a shoot in Hong Kong). However, the funny thing was: it wasn’t all that enjoyable (not the pants, they were awesome).

What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

Young Adult or Adult Suspense and Mystery, as well as Young Adult Contemporary.

What is your favorite book?

I think that changes all the time but one of my most recent favourites is Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. I love the powerful mystery and intrigue that pushes the plot along—and which continues to surprise until the very end.

You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

There are so many amazing writers out there it’s hard to choose but some series that I wind up going back to again and again are Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse books and Scott Westerfeld’s The Pretties. Both blend deadly plots with surreal beauty in a way that I find particularly addictive.

If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

I would go back to yesterday and by a lottery ticket for the winning jackpot so I wouldn’t have to worry about making money anymore and could spend all my time writing fiction. Actually, I might also go back to my high school and tell myself to stop trying to be someone else (though it’s unlikely I would have taken advice from some weird old lady so I guess that trip would be pretty pointless).

When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

I don’t think writing comes easy for anyone—it certainly doesn’t for me. In fact, I don’t think I’m a particularly gifted writer. What I am gifted with, however, is perseverance. And that is what allows me to turn what initially comes out as rough and tumble rambles into something that resembles a chapter.

Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

My son is long past the fuzzy stage but I do have a baby daughter. Luckily, she’s still pretty cuddly (when she isn’t crying or barfing on me—which is pretty rare).

What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?

Dark chocolate anything. Obviously. Sort of offended you had to ask. #choclaterulestheearth

Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Start with what you know and don’t ever doubt the importance of that. It took me a long time to realize that I had a story to tell and wish I had started earlier. Don’t make that mistake. Everyone’s life has some element that is totally unique and fascinating—discover what that is and write about it.

by R.L. Blalock

Genre: Genre: Science Fiction, Fantasy, Post-Apocalyptic

**SHORT STORY TO BE READ ALONG SIDE THE DEATH & DECAY SERIES NOVELS**

To protect and serve.

The motto that every officer is taught from their first day in the academy. On a humid June day in St. Louis, it is a motto that could get Officer Wyatt Ward killed.

Desperate citizens flock to the station as the officers of the Cottleville Police Department struggle to handle the chaos that is enveloping a city already shaken by rioting. But as darkness descends something much worse is rising.

The deranged. Brutal, unforgiving, single-minded monsters that were once the citizens Wyatt was sworn to protect. Now, they attack. They bite. They infect.

As fear takes hold…
As the city begins to eat itself…
As the world crumbles…
What is a man who is sworn to protect to do as the world dies?

My Review:

Officer Wyatt Ward’s day is not going too well. Ever since he came to work this morning there have been a lot of weird calls. Now he gets a call that there is a dead body on the street. Right before he makes it to the street where the dead body was reported a call goes out that one of their officers was in trouble. Wyatt wants to go help his fellow officer but he has a call of his own that he must attend to first. But when he gets there the body is gone and while he is looking around to see what might be going on the dispatcher comes on the radio telling all officers are to report to the station now.

Once Wyatt is back at the station he sees a lot of people trying to get into the station. Wyatt meets another officer while trying to make his way inside. On closer inspection they soon realize that some of the people are eating other people. They don’t have a clue what is going on but when one of these people come at them trying to eat them as well it is on then and it doesn’t matter as to why they are trying to eat them.

Well needless to say it is not long before the station if overrun with these monsters that use to be human. Wyatt and the other officers are not sure what to do. It is their job to protect the people but how do they protect the people when the same people are attacking them? Will Wyatt and the other officers end up trapped in the police station? Who will make it out alive? Will anyone make it out alive? Who is going to protect the ones that are supposed to do the protecting?

I have honestly enjoyed following along with Officer Wyatt while he fights the zombies. I sure do love me some zombies and if you love zombies then you are going to as I say “tee totally” love The Darkest Days. I highly recommend The Darkest Days to anyone who loves a good zombie story of any kind.

An Interview with R.L. Blalock

So, what have you written?
My first work was a novella called Mark of Perdition. It’s a demonic story that started as a nightmare and allowed me to find my voice as an author. Currently, it’s free for anyone to read on wattpad.
After that, I wrote another novella called The Darkest Days. It’s an offshoot of the Death & Decay series. I loved writing it because it was all action. I felt like I really hit my stride while writing it and it gave me a lot more confidence when I tackled my novel, Devour. Devour is the first novel in the Death & decay series. It’s really where the story starts and what I wanted to write for a long time.
Right now, I’m working on Divided, book two in the Death & Decay series. This one has tripped me up a few times. There is a lot going on with the story. But I’m really excited for it to be finished.

What genre are your books?
Science fiction and horror. Both together and separate.

What draws you to this genre?
I like stories that draw me into a new world, even if that world is terrifying. I want something that will let me forget about reality, even if it’s just for a little bit. I particularly like storylines where the needs are much more basic. Survival, food, water, shelter. Things that make the problems of daily life insignificant. It’s that kind of dire situation that I can really lose myself in and shrug off the stress of the day.

When did you decide to become a writer?
When I really decided to go for it and write something, was not too long after my daughter was born. I have wanted to be a writer since middle school, but after my daughter was born it became much more important. Parents are supposed to lead and teach by example and if I want her to follow her dreams and make them a reality, then I need to show her that it can be done by following through with my own dreams.

Do you read much and if so who are your favorite authors?
Finding time to read has gotten difficult between working, writing, and raising a 3-year-old, but I try to set aside at least thirty minutes each night. My all-time favorite authors have to Joe McKinney, Rhiannon Frater, Ernest Cline, David Wong, Anne McCaffrey, and Tamora Pierce.

For your own reading, do you prefer ebooks or traditional paper/hard back books?
I’m old school. I love a good, old paperback book. I love the feel of the pages and the look of the words. I love being able to see them on my bookshelf and be instantly reminded of the other world they hold within their pages. However, begrudgingly I have a kindle I read off of for the most part. IT’s hard to argue when the books are so much less expensive.

What are your thoughts on good/bad reviews?
Good reviews are what keep writers going on the bad days. I still remember my first five-star review. I was stressed out by work, stressed out with an upcoming book launch, a to-do list that could bury an elephant, a novel that was well behind schedule. But with that one review I could feel some of my energy return. I found new strength to push on and get more done. And each one does that. Each one is like a little energy boost. Someone saying, “keep going. You’ve got this.” As for bad reviews, they are what they are. No one book is going to make everyone happy. That doesn’t mean they aren’t deflating. They are. They can make you question what you’re even doing. But some of the bad reviews can actually be really helpful. They can force you to face the shortcomings of your writing and figure out how to fix them.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
Write. And just keep writing. It sounds easy, but it’s not.

You’ll doubt yourself. You’ll doubt your writing, your plot, your characters. But keep pushing forward. Keep getting words on the page. So many people start writing and never follow through with their idea. Even if you just finish the story, you’ve already finished more than most people ever will.

Author Bio:
I love to write stories with characters that feel real enough to friend on Facebook, or slap across the face. I write to make you feel, think, and burn with the thrill that can only come from getting lost in the pages. I love to write unforgettable characters who wrestle with life's largest problems. My books may always end with a Happily Ever After, but there will always be drama on the way there.

Genres: Contemporary, Romance, Young Adult

Seventeen-year-old Autumn Teslow arrives at her father’s job fair knowing she’ll never measure up to the perfect image of daddy’s little girl—her twin sister.

Wearing anger management issues like a second skin won’t help Autumn win her dad’s approval for the big trip she’s been planning—or meet his condition that she successfully complete a summer internship for college.

Autumn’s cool unravels when her sister lectures against disappointing the family again. And when a young, bearded guy steps through the crowd to settle the growing argument between siblings, Autumn lashes out, dubbing him a “Duck Dynasty wannabe.”

At Nineteen, Caden Behr is clueless as to why his man parts are threatened by the fearsome girl before him. He’d only come to find an intern for his recreational equipment company, not break up a girl-fight between two sisters.

Unfortunately, the only candidate left is the girl who just told him off. Without her, he’ll never prove to his CEO mother that he’s ready for more responsibility.

Autumn and Caden agree that if they can keep from killing one another, they can use one another to get what they want and then never have to see each other again. Which is what they want.

Until it isn’t.

Because despite her best efforts to scare him off, and his fading desire to push her into the lake, they’re beginning to enjoy the time they spend together. But pride is a hard habit to break. And if neither will admit their changing feelings, they could lose a whole lot more than one summer.

Author Bio:
As a child, Julie’s summers were about horseback riding and fishing, while winter brought sledding and ice-skating on frozen ponds. Most of life was magical, but not all. She struggled with multiple learning disabilities, and spent much of her time gazing out windows and daydreaming. In the fourth grade (with the help of one very nice teacher) she fought dyslexia for her right to read and won.
Afterward, she invented stories where powerful heroines kicked bad-guy butt to win the hearts charismatic heroes. And then she wrote one down…
Writing ever since, Julie weaves southern gothic, contemporary, fantasy, and young adult romances. She enjoys sweeping tales of mystery and epic adventure… which must include a really hot guy. Her writing is proof a dream and some hard work can overcome any obstacle.

Blurb Blitz + #Giveaway: The Joined Realm by Robert Vane @GoddessFish

The Joined Realm
by Robert Vane
GENRE: Fantasy

BLURB:

"Control the water, control the world"

From inside the lush expanse of the Inner Realm, the Ghosbane family and their fellow waterlords rule the Joined Realm through their mastery of the ancient aqueducts that feed the vast Drylands beyond their domain. After being accused of a terrible crime, Arlon Ghosbane, the inheritor of a secret legacy of the vanquished overlords of the Joined Realm, is forced to flee from his family and the only life he has ever known. Guided by a renegade howler intent on freeing his race, Arlon discovers that a world far different than one he had been taught about lies beyond his water-rich homeland. The fate of humanity will be determined by the decisions of a young fugitive and a former slave as they fight for the future of the Joined Realm.

Excerpt:

Tattered banners displaying the sunflower sigil of this dusty frontier holding hung behind the lord and his men, all of them pressed together like a clutch of hens. The chamber’s walls looked like they could crumble at any moment, but at least they kept Raz’s pounding light at bay. Sand infested the rough-cut limestone of the floor, but Bellamy supposed that was inevitable in such a water-starved place. He busied himself trying to dislodge the bits of filth ensconced beneath his fingernails as Lord Lowen droned on. When Bellamy finished his manicure and looked up, he noted with annoyance that Lowen and his meager retainers did not have sand strewn in their hair or stuck in the crevasses of their fingernails.

“That’s quite enough, Lowen,” Bellamy declared, his tone as dismissive as that of a disappointed tutor. “Scribble your excuses on some parchment to send to our Lord Idris. I’ve heard enough of them. You are responsible for every drop of water that flows out from this portion of the aqueduct. That is your oath. You retain your holdings, and your life, only so long as you uphold that oath. You have failed.”

AUTHOR BIO:

Robert Vane has been writing stories since he was eight. It’s been his full time job for two decades – but not the stories he wanted to write.
