Blog Tour + Review + #Giveaway: WEREGIRL by C.D. Bell @WereGirlBook

WEREGIRL
by C.D. Bell
Genre: Young Adult, Werewolves, Fantasy

SYNOPSIS:

Nessa Kurland is running for her life.

C. D. Bell's WEREGIRL is a fast-paced teen thriller set in Tether, Michigan, a town on the brink of shutdown since it was stripped of its resources by corporate polluter Dutch Chemical.

High school junior, Nessa Kurland, is a cross-country runner with her eyes set on one thing: a college scholarship as her one-way ticket out of Tether.

Talented teammate Cynthia Sinise invites Nessa on a nighttime run through Tether's overgrown forest trails. But she speeds ahead, leaving Nessa alone to discover a trapped wolf. Nessa tries to free the animal but is badly bitten, seemingly ruining her hopes for a strong fall season with the cross-country team.

Instead, Nessa's freakishly quick recovery is followed by improved running times. All her senses are heightened. Nessa has transformed.

She has become a werewolf.

In her new state, Nessa learns there are things about Tether that powerful people want to keep hidden. Why does a Nobel Laureate work at the small-town medical clinic? Are top college athletic scouts really interested in her emerging talent? Can she trust Chayton, the motorcycle-riding guide her friends have faith in? WEREGIRL's Nessa must navigate her junior year and true human darkness, while making peace with her new, wild nature.

Excerpt:

She ran faster and farther than she ever had before. She felt blood pumping into her heart. She was aware of life in the forest in ways she had never been before, though she had always loved it, always found herself happy here. She could see it living and moving all around her. She could hear the running of water, the music of wind in the trees. She could smell the heaviness of leaves turning to soil, the acidity given off by the broken branch of a pine tree.

Her own body was strong and light in a way she had never felt it to be at home or in school. She vaulted over dips in the trail. She leapt up onto fallen trees to get a view of what was ahead.

Everything was glowing and shining, and she herself was flying inside that glow. She could do anything. Be anything.

Nessa had never really felt truly beautiful before, but tonight she not only understood that she was beautiful, she understood that everyone was. That for all the competition and fear and knowing that the next runner was coming up behind you, she had been missing out on how beautiful life could be. She should have been watching and appreciating others instead of waiting inside herself for the right time to shine. The time was now.

She ran—danced?—through the loop of the trail and then up into the pastures behind Joe Bent’s farm.

 My Review:

Nessa is a junior in high school who loves running and runs cross country for her high school. Running is her ticket to a full scholarship. She needs this scholarship because without it she will never get into a good college. Her mom would help her out but she has her hands full just trying to put three kids through high school and putting food on the table.

Nessa and her sister help her mom out around the house with all the chores while she is working. Nessa also helps out with her little brother by being at home when he comes in from school and she also takes him to the clinic on Saturdays. She grabs every seconds she can to run though.

Nessa loves running in the woods at night sometimes. It is on one of these nights that she sees a wolf with his paw in a trap. Nessa tries to help the wolf but he is not making it easy for her. He keeps growling at her every time she gets near him. The next thing she knows there is another wolf knocking her down getting in her way of helping the wolf or so she thinks. When she turns to run away from the wolf he bites her and needless to say Nessa is now a werewolf. How is she going to keep this a secret from her mom and everyone else? Is it going to interfere with her running in anyway or maybe it will help?

While Nessa is trying to figure out what is happening to her and how to be a werewolf and what all that may entail; maybe she needs a book with a title like “The Beginners Guide to Being a Werewolf” or maybe “Introduction to Becoming a Werewolf”; she learns that the company that came in and saved their little town several years ago from becoming a ghost town has a little secret; one that may involve her little brother and other children in the town and Nessa will give it her all to find out what this company is up to and save all the children.

I have read several books about werewolves but I will have to say I don’t think I have read anything quite like Weregirl before it is one of a kind. It had me guessing all the way through as to who is the grey wolf? I would think I had it figured out but then realize I was wrong. It had me guessing all the way to the end. I couldn’t put it down I just had to know who the grey wolf was. I also kept trying to take some of the other wolves and pair them up with some of the kids at school. I would love to know more about Nessa, Bree, Luc, Chayton, The Grey Wolf and all the other wolves and I would also like to know where the other wolves hang out and live. Who are these wolves?

If you have not read Weregirl then I would like to suggest that you give it a try. I would recommend it for all ages.

Guest Post:

Guest Post - Do the characters all come to you at the same time or do some of them come to you as you write?

When I wrote this book, unlike my other novels which came after, my memories of me as a kid quickly returned in my mind with all my friends, sister, their parents and mine. So, it was not too difficult to create the characters you’ll get to know in my story because they already had personalities that I encountered. Now, that’s not to say that it was just easy. I still needed to create the evil pumpkin thief. Luckily, he was not chasing us when we were kids, nor was he some urban legend we all were afraid of. So, creating the imaginary world with him in it was certainly a challenge for me, and it all came to me as I wrote the story. I did not outline this novel either, like the other novels I wrote soon after. This was my first novel, and I just went with it from the first chapter until the last.

Book Tour + #Giveaway: George Bailey Gets Saved in the End by Ken O’Neill @KenJONeill @JaidisShaw

 photo George Bailey Banner.png

photo George Bailey.pngTitle:  George Bailey Gets Saved in the End
Author:  Ken O’Neill
Published:  October 17th, 2016
Genre:  Contemporary Fiction
Recommended Age:  18+

Synopsis:

George Bailey, who has made a fortune selling Christmas ornaments, is having a rough few days. He’s thrown his back out lifting the Thanksgiving turkey; his father has died and his wife has left him. He’d turn to his best friend for support, but said BFF is having an affair with his wife.

Let the holiday season begin!

On the heels of all this misery George meets a new woman, and he also meets Jesus (or perhaps just an awfully nice guy named Jesus). As he scrambles to hold together his floundering family, he must figure out if these strange and wondrous events are miracles or symptoms of a nervous breakdown.

Excerpt from George Bailey Gets Saved in the End:

All the usual invitations had been extended. Yet oddly, not a single friend—The Strays, they always called them—joined the Baileys for dinner this year. The lack of guests in no way altered the quantity of food the family prepared. It mattered not whether thirty people attended, or just the eight of them.
As far as George’s mother, Claire, and his wife, Tara, were concerned, you could not call the day Thanksgiving unless the turkey weighed more than twenty-five pounds. Theirs weighed in at record-breaking twenty-nine point four. Add the stuffing, all the pan drippings, and the cast iron Le Creuset roasting pan to that number, and George was hoisting a weight just shy of forty pounds when his back went out.

Considering George’s relative level of fitness, which was extremely high by American standards, though only average when compared to other Manhattanites, he did not believe it was the weight per se that precipitated his injury. Rather he suspected his troubles were brought on because he had been forced to crouch down when removing the turkey because his wife, for reasons still unknown to him, insisted that the bird go in the lower oven. Not that George blamed her for his mishap. Just at the moment George was taking the pan out of the oven, he remembered being told something about bending with his knees. But by then it was too late. Something deep within his core seized up. As his knees buckled, he lurched forward to the sound of Tara shouting, “Don’t you dare drop that bird, George!”

He didn’t.

George spent most of the day alternating between ice packs and a heating pad, because his wife said cold but his mother said hot, and he figured it was easier just to keep them both happy.

Sneak peek:

Flashes of the silver car I’d been in a million times flew by in my mind, spliced in with another image—of the body I’d just seen at the bottom of the ravine. I kept seeing it over and over like a trailer for the latest horror movie. But it wasn’t some actress in a film. It was my best friend’s lifeless body at the bottom of that rocky cliff. The stark image taunted me: large, jagged boulders breaking out from a coating of pure white snow forever marked with her blood—her body, splayed across them, crooked and broken.

He’s reckless.

But once the bad boy hockey star tempts her into his world, threatening her professional future, she’s forced to decide whether to let him into her heart…or to leave him behind forever.

EXCERPT:

Walking up the twisting staircase, we head into Coach Bartley’s home full of men accompanied by beautiful women drinking and talking over loud music. Theo’s hand finds the small of my back as he weaves us under the dim lighting through the foyer and into the kitchen.
“You look great tonight, Quinn.” His words are soft and warm as he brushes past me, leading the way. “That purple dress you have on really makes your eyes pop.”
“Thanks,” I reply.
I glance at my reflection in the floor to ceiling windows and admire my strappy nude heels and purple bustier dress. I love the way the padded bust and structured silhouette flatters my body in all the right places.
My entire body stiffens, when his familiar warmth surrounds me, his hands finding my hips. “Nice dress.”
Theo turns around with a scowl on his face and stares Cash up and down. He holds out his hand and they embrace in a firm shake. “Great game tonight, Brooks. Can I get you something? Like a drink?”
“Soda water and lime,” Cash says, his finger creeping along the back of my thigh and up to the hem of my dress. “Would you like anything, Quinn?” The calm possession in his voice alarms the hell out of me. I can barely let out a breath, never mind speak with his hand cupped around my ass.
Theo locks eyes with me and waits for my response, oblivious to Cash’s wandering hands.
“Sure,” I say, letting out the breath I’ve been holding.
“Tell him what you want,” Cash whispers against my ear.
My body trembles from the warmth of his breath. “A water, please.”
Theo nods. “Quinn, come with me to get the drinks?” But his tone is all off. It’s not really a question, it more like he’s insisting.
“No, she’ll stay here, with me.” Cash is insisting too.
“Quinn?” Theo repeats.
“I’m fine, Theo. I’ll wait here.”
Theo looks at me one last time, lets out a deep breath, and then heads over to the makeshift bar set up in the great room.
When he is out of sight, I whip around. “Are you crazy? This place is crawling with my colleagues.”
“You like it and you know it,” Cash says, tucking a stray strand of hair behind my ear.
I whack his hand away. “You’re unbelievable.”

A flicker of intensity flashes in his eyes, nostrils flaring. Moving closer, his scent—honey and cinnamon—washes over me. “Don’t pretend you didn’t feel something in that locker room, Mittens.”
“Yeah, I felt my dignity being ripped right out of me. And I don’t understand why you even care? I can already see that you’re onto the next,” I nod over at a group of girls staring us down from the corner.
“Would that bother you?” He glances at the blonde girl he bench-pressed earlier today. “If I fucked her tonight instead of you?”
We stand there, eyeing each other up as I try not to let my real feelings for this arrogant son-of-a–bitch seep in.
My chest twists tightly, painfully. “Alright, Brooks, I see what you’re trying to do here. But here’s the thing, I don’t give a shit what you do. Women throw themselves at you constantly and you gladly fuck them. Good for you. I bet you’ve already nailed a whole bunch since the locker room, so what’s another?”
He shakes his head and loosens his tie. “Nope. Not one.”
“Aw, how sweet. I must have made quite the impression”
