Fifteen years later, driven by a mission to democratize success, Derrick released his second book, Your Brain Weighs 500 Pounds, after investing more than 1,500 hours researching mindset, habits, and high-performance behaviors. His work challenges conventional thinking about failure, goal-setting, and achievement, offering readers a practical blueprint for sustained personal and professional growth.
In addition to writing, Derrick advises individuals, teams, and organizations on high performance and leadership, and he is a partner at 500 Pound Media, a digital content company focused on personal development and achievement.

Born and raised in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Derrick believes that success is not reserved for the lucky or the privileged—but for those willing to develop the right mindset and show up consistently, even when failure is part of the process.

Chronicles of the Arvynth

Metaphysical Fiction

Date Published: November 25, 2025

Publisher: MindStir Media

USA Today bestselling author J. J. Hebert's brand-new urban fantasy series Chronicles of the Arvynth begins with The Breaking of Time, a novel about a devoted father whose desperate act to save his son fractures reality itself, awakening ancient magic and drawing him back into the path of an immortal order he once betrayed, where love, time, and silence collide in a race against eternity.

🏆 Mariel Hemingway's Book Club Selection (Best Urban Fantasy):

"This novel is heartfelt, gripping, and memorable in all the best ways." —Mariel Hemingway, Bestselling Author & Oscar-Nominated Actress ★★★★★

ONE FATHER'S DESPERATE CHOICE FRACTURES TIME AND REALITY ITSELF.

To everyone around him, Daniel Ward is a mild-mannered accountant, devoted husband and father in a quiet New England suburb. But when his ten-year-old son chases a runaway soccer ball into the street, straight into the path of a speeding truck, Daniel does the impossible. He freezes time.

That single act of defiance exposes the secret he's buried for decades. His magic awakens the ancient order he once betrayed, the Arvynth, a brotherhood of immortal sorcerers devoted to stillness and death, determined to silence the world.

As his carefully constructed life unravels, Daniel must protect his family while evading the brotherhood that hunts him. Every second he steals from time feeds the void that seeks to consume it, threatening not only the people he loves but reality itself.

Forced to choose between sacrifice and survival, Daniel discovers the truth: sometimes the loudest act of love is defiance.

The Breaking of Time is a race against eternity, a supernatural thriller that fuses urban fantasy and family drama in a story about the noise of life, the cost of power, and one father's desperate fight to keep the world from falling silent.

LGBTQ+

Date Published: February 9, 2026

Trans in the Time of Trump by Hope Abbigail Nulf is a poignant, thought-provoking collection that captures the intersection of personal identity, political resistance, and art. Born from the author's experiences of surviving trauma, transitioning, and discovering resilience, this book combines raw humor, activism, and deep insight into the current political landscape.

Through her character "Doodle," Nulf expresses complex emotions about identity, gender, and societal pressures, offering readers a unique, humorous perspective on the struggles faced by the LGBTQ+ community in an increasingly divisive world. This first of nine Doodle books explores the power of art to speak truth to power, inviting readers to join a movement of resistance, hope, and courage in the face of tyranny.

With illustrations that convey both personal pain and joy, Trans in the Time of Trump is a powerful declaration that art can heal, inspire, and fuel activism.

About the Author

I am a trans special education teacher and 10 years ago I started cartooning books for kids and parents that were in trouble. I did 8 books for kids that were picked on or disliked, and then my country went away.

In the face of treatment of trans people, brown people, and the growing abuse of all minorities I had to change Doodle from a comforting friend to a mirror I could hold up to rednecks.

She is my activism. A far cry from my mother’s activism in the 60s, but it is what I can add to the fight.

Stuffing the brochure into the pocket of my navy hoodie, I walked to the window. The gentle blues of twilight streamed through it, making a trapezoid on the museum’s wooden floor.

A narrow, carved piece of wood stuck out beneath the sill. There appeared to be two wooden hinges at its base. It was another door. Curious, I pried the top open.

The slender strip of wood popped off the wall. I caught it before it could hit the floor and froze, squatting, door cradled in both hands. Horrified, I gaped at the piece of carved wood.

“You broke it,” Herb hissed. “You broke the house on our first visit!”

“I didn’t break it. It fell off.” Frantically, I tried to work the door back into the hinge.

“What are you doing?” Bran asked from behind me.

Heart pounding, I spun to face him and hid the slim little door behind my back.

“Are you hiding something behind your back?” Bran cocked an eyebrow. Now, he looked like an angry Roman general, the trimmed stubble on his jaw more threatening. Not even his jeans and blue button-up eased the effect.

I blinked, sweating. He’d caught me like a kid elbow-deep in a cookie jar.

Interview with Kirsten Weiss

Could you tell us about any research trips you took for this story? Which places did you visit, and what made them essential to your writing?

I have spent a good bit of time in Lodi, California, the inspiration for my fictional San Benedetto of the Paranormal Museum world. But I like visiting during different seasons and taking notes. Last year, I visited in March, when the book, A Deathly Display, is set and got lots of video of what the grapevines looked like, the fruit trees (many were still in bloom), and what flowers were blossoming. I also stopped in a winery (which was fun as it sounds) and the local wine and visitors center to update my local wine knowledge. The person behind the counter gave me lots of good tips on the differences between old, ancient, and heritage vine wines, which I slid into the book.

What's the strangest thing you've ever had to research online for your book?

For my most recent book, A Deathly Display, it was probably the types of haunted paintings and haunted painting tropes! I don’t have any eyes that move in the painting, but one of the characters in the painting is rumored to walk out of it.

What research (history, mythology, science) goes into your world-building?

I took an online course in museum curation a couple years ago and used a lot of the material again for this book. My heroine, Maddie, is taking a modern curation course to up-level her skills at her paranormal museum. I think people are interested in these kinds of details, as long as you don’t get too deep in the weeds, and they make the world feel more real.

Have any of the people you've known, past or present, left a lasting impression on your writing journey? If so, we'd love to hear about a memorable experience that stands out to you.

I’ve known so many wonderful writers who’ve impacted my writing journey, but the one who stands out the most is cozy mystery author Diana Orgain. She really helped me improve my writing, editing some of my early books and just sharing information. She’s a terrific writer and a wonderful human being.

Do you write in the same genre all the time?

So far, I’ve only written mysteries, but I’ve crossed a lot of sub-genres—from straight cozy mystery to witch mystery. I’ve even written a book on reading Tarot cards that’s also a work of experimental fiction, with a murder mystery running through the footnotes.

If so, have you ever consider writing in another one?

Not yet. I really love the structure of a murder mystery—the stakes, the drama, and the pleasure of solving the puzzle at the end. I’ve found there’s a lot of room within that framework to create original works and grow.

Which character, supernatural or human, do you enjoy writing the most and why?

I love Maddie Kosloski of my Perfectly Proper Paranormal Museum series! She feels so real to me, and I love her creativity, her gentle humor, and her sense of honor. And I like how she’s grown over the last 11 books. The changes are subtle, but they’re there.
