Not too long ago,

It is a time of chaotic hormones.
Two nerdy gents
home for winter break
have discovered a female gamer
at a midnight release.

During the break,
the gamer trio manages
to reveal the game's secret boss,
a hidden enemy
with enough power to destroy
anything in its path.

Pursued by other gamers
who want to be the first
to beat this boss,
George and Katie race to level up,
and, in so doing, restore decency
and sexual activity to their personal galaxy…

Excerpt:

"These graphics suck," George says and I look back at the screen. We're standing in the middle of the Estate, colorful orbs quivering ahead of us. We each have to choose our starting advantage. Waterfalls shimmer in the distance and the sunlight streams over multicolored stones in the courtyard.

"Amateurs," Lanyon concurs. "I mean, they couldn't have five waterfalls?"

"Your ironic wit is mind blowing, but choose your damn orbs," I tell them. I consider. Magic, defense, offense, stealth, and charisma. I always go for magic as a black mage, but I wonder if a druid needs something else. Screw it. I need charisma in real life, too.

"Charisma?" Lanyon asks. "No one ever picks charisma."

"We're a party of a thief, druid, and a bard. We're screwed regardless."

"You two underestimate the mighty power of my lute," George argues.

"Did you start with charisma?" Lanyon asks.

"Hell, no. I have charisma in spades. I started with stealth."

"Great. A stealthy bard," I sigh.

"She's right," Lanyon concedes. "We're screwed."

However, it actually isn't bad at all at first. We power through the Estate and make it to the Yobanaria Dale with no resurrections and all at level ten. I'm impressed. George hasn't actually fought anything, but he has some pretty awe-inspiring charm mastery already. I think I might have a serious crush. He seals the deal when he buffs my hailstorm spell without even being asked.

"Can you guys watch El Thiefelo? My mom wants me to eat supper," Lanyon says.

"Yeah, we've got it," I tell him. "The first boss is in the elven ruins anyway, so we should grind a bit. I think he's a twelve."

George and I explore the Dale, taking out bats and Joba spores. It's fairly quiet, except for when we combo with his charms and my spells and he yells out, "Eat lute, bitch," but it's nice. We work well, almost inherently understanding each other. I've never been able to play this effectively with anyone. I try not to think about his eyes. Stupid boys, being cute and stuff.

By the time Lanyon comes back, we're all at level 12, although Lanyon leveled up just by standing by a door while we played. Still, we are ready to take on Balsa the Proud. As a black mage, it took me about nine seconds. Trees don't like fire. However, druids don't have the same level of black magic and all elemental magic is weakened by the need to draw from the elements nearby. Sadly, trees seem to avoid storing fire runes in their villages. I expect this to be a little more challenging. It might even take fifteen seconds.

"First boss. Also known as the freebie bitch to sucker the young folks into a false sense of security," Lanyon announces as he runs into the center of Balsa's lair. The cinema plays and then, in a moment of pure absurdity, El Thiefelo is squished as Balsa steps on him.

"Can someone revive me?" Lanyon whines.

About The Authors:

Sarah Daltry writes about the regular people who populate our lives. She's written works in various genres - romance, erotica, fantasy, horror. Genre isn't as important as telling a story about people and how their lives unfold. Sarah tends to focus on YA/NA characters but she's been known to shake it up. Most of her stories are about relationships - romantic, familial, friendly - because love and empathy are the foundation of life. It doesn't matter if the story is set in contemporary NY, historical Britain, or a fantasy world in the future - human beings are most interesting in the ways they interact with others. This is the principle behind all of Sarah's stories.

Sarah has spent most of her life in school, from her BA and MA in English and writing to teaching both at the high school and college level. She also loves studying art history and really anything because learning is fun.

When Sarah isn't writing, she tends to waste a lot of time checking Facebook for pictures of cats, shooting virtual zombies, and simply staring out the window.

She has written several books, most notably Bitter Fruits, an urban fantasy in the Eden's Fall series, and the six-part New Adult contemporary Flowering series. Her most recent release is Primordial Dust, a YA fantasy.

Pete Clark likes writing, animals, potato chips, and cheese. Midnight Riders was his first published novel, although he can also proudly say he finally finished Helix Crashing, the fantasy novel he has been working on for over a decade. In addition, he has written Across the Barren Landscape, a collection of linked Western short stories, and Tales from Midnight's Graveyard, a collection of non-linked horror, science fiction, and fantasy stories. He also writes plays, both dramatic and comedic.

When he is not writing, Pete tends to ignore everyone around him and obsess over sports.

Excerpt:
Bethany places her elbows on the table and reaches for some chips. "I don't know what to do. I mean…I just…I liked him and I thought he liked me. So, I went back with him. I'd had a little bit too much to drink…and God, he smells like Heaven."

I roll my eyes. "You want to try someone else? Any other guy you've had your eye on?" She shrugs and runs a finger over the rim of her empty glass. She looks so innocent with her strawberry blond hair and big blue eyes. "No. Look at him out there; he looks so carefree and happy. Why can't I move on like that?"

I take a chip and chomp on it. "Because he was never looking for anything but a one-night stand. He got it, now he is on to his next target."

Bethany mumbles. "I wish we could just break his heart and show him how it feels."

Yeah, right. Taking a couple of chips, I shove them in my mouth. I shouldn't have skipped dinner. Heather was on my ass all night long about looking slim for the club. I reach for another chip when I see Bethany and Heather are both staring at me. You know, with those we took a vote and you lost eyes.

"What?" Suddenly my chip isn't very appetizing; I toss it back into the basket.

Heather wiggles her eyebrows, which really shows me that they're up to something I won't like. "Well, since you know how to treat guys…you can go out with him, then break his heart once he falls in love with you. You're freaking adorable and have the nicest ass. He likes asses."

Wow, is that supposed to make me feel better? "What-absolutely no. No. No. No. Not going to happen. You want me to go out with the damn ass monster."

"Oh, come on, Laney. You can date him for a couple of weeks and then be done. Please…I would do anything! He deserves it, look at him!"

Bethany shouts, pointing at him. I glance over my shoulder at Aiden. He is grinding on some girl and checking another one out. I scoff. "Sure, he is an asshole, Bethany. But I'm definitely not your girl for this."

Heather opens her mouth to say something when two tree trunks of arms wrap around her from behind. She squeals as he nuzzles her neck. "Hey, girls. You three having a great night?"

I hold up my half-empty shot glass and give Todd a sarcastic smile. He snorts and starts to pull Heather toward the dance floor. He has no idea I coached Heather through their entire dating experience. It didn't take long before he was texting her nonstop and asking her to be exclusive. Sucker. They seem happy together so I can't say it wasn't worth it.

The Ashes That Remain
By A.M. Griffin

Blurb:

We're at war against the aliens that have invaded Earth, fighting the only way we can-by surviving. I have more than most people do, but although I know it's stupid to hold on, I can't let go of what might have been-can't help dreaming of something more. No matter how I tell myself it would be easier to do what everyone else wants me to, there's a part of me that can't give in.

Making the best of the situation is one thing. Settling, even to make other people happy, is something else.

Then we hear the alien mother ships have disappeared. Of course we have to go and investigate. What we find lands us in a huge mess that we somehow have to clean up and, as our little enclave is rocked to the core with even more changes, I'm learning a hard lesson.

The more things change-for the better or the worse-there's no fighting human nature, and building on the ashes that remain will take everything we have. And maybe more.

Excerpt:

A dark brown object comes slowly toward us, traversing up and over the uprooted street. The body of the vehicle has odd lines to it, jagged and sharp-foreign-making it hard on the eyes. The wheels move on continuous tracks. With no visible windows that I can see I wonder how it's being steered…then my thoughts wander to who is steering.

"Is it a tank?" I whisper, glancing to Rocky briefly.

Squinting, he continues to peer at the vehicle. "It's not any kind of tank that I've seen. It looks odd."

"Misplaced," I add. "It appears as if it doesn't belong here…not on Earth anyway." My heart seems to fall. Just moments before we'd talked about the alien invasion being over. I let myself believe, just for a minute, humans could reclaim Earth. But now, seeing this thing on what used to be Woodward Avenue, with its dark color contrasting against the pure-white snow, I'm gripped with fear.

These things never plan to leave us.

They're here to stay.

"What are they doing?" Rocky mutters under his breath, talking to himself.

"Why are they traveling in that thing, when they have spaceships?"

Rocky scrunches his salt and pepper brows together. "Spaceships are good at hunting down humans and transporting them to wherever. But that thing…"

"Heavy machinery."

"They're working now." Rocky turns my way. His piercing eyes settle on me. "With humans gone, they are free to build."

Rocky lowers his head and tugs on my arm for me to do the same. He takes his rifle from his back and holds it in his hands. I press my back against the car and reach under my coat to retrieve my pistols. My heart beats so hard against my chest that I feel nothing but pain radiating around my ribs. Blood rushes with such force through my veins that I have to struggle to listen to the vehicle above the noise of it pumping past my eardrums.

With a flick of my thumbs, I release the safety on both guns. I'm breathing so fast and hard that my head begins to swim.

Pull it together.

I close my eyes, trying to steady myself.

"Ian and Jorin are at your nine o'clock," Rocky says. "Try not to kill them."

I crack open my eyes and cut them in Rocky's direction.

"What?" he asks. "You think you'll have a clear shot of anything with your eyes closed?"

True.

The vehicle comes to a screeching halt almost directly in front of where Rocky and I are hiding. We exchange quick glances.

Why did they stop here? Had they seen us?

I tighten my grip on my weapons. Although it's cold, my palms are wet with sweat.

I turn around slowly, my feet crunching against the snow. Looking down, instinctively I try to step in the prints that I've already made…

Our footprints.

My eyes follow the trail of fresh footprints we've made in the snow. One set leads from the street to where we're hiding. I nudge Rocky with my elbow, drawing his attention to what I'm seeing.

He doesn't say a word, but his facial features twist with emotion. I knew what I was getting myself into when I pressed to come. There was always a possibility of encountering the aliens. There had also been a possibility of having to defend ourselves from them-the reason for the weapons.

I've got on my big girl panties.

I'm ready.
