Lavender in Bloom
Lily Velez
Publication date: July 25th 2016
Genres: Historical, Romance, Young Adult
It’s the year 1802 in Avignon, France…
Noah Capet has spent most of his young life living simple and unvaried days in the hushed countryside of southern France. Quiet, reserved, and diffident, his preference for existing is to do so in solitude, keeping to himself both in town and on his family’s farm—a predilection that’s altogether disrupted when a newcomer to town by the name of Jeremie Perreault begins an unremitting quest to befriend him.
Jeremie is everything Noah is not. Charismatic and gregarious, he leaves a trail of charmed admirers in his wake wherever he goes. Expressive and idealistic, he talks without end about his deep love for old books and his spirited dream to one day travel the world on a literary pilgrimage.
Over the course of a single summer, the two form an unlikely friendship, but just as quickly as it develops, it soon entirely dissolves as they’re forced to face the truth of what has unexpectedly emerged between them.
Lavender in Bloom is a tender and tragic coming-of-age story about first love and self-discovery, and a poignant reminder that time is fleeting and always takes with it the choices we’re too afraid to make.

EXCERPT:
“I think of you almost every moment, Noah. I can’t eat, I can’t sleep. I am utterly tormented by these things I feel for you.”
It was as if lightning had struck Noah. He was paralyzed by the admission, stricken silent, and at his core, an inferno devoured him. Its heat filled his veins, spread from ligament to ligament, muscle to muscle. Jeremie had once read aloud a poem regarding a phoenix making its nest in a person’s bosom. Noah felt the phoenix now, felt her awakening, shifting, extending her wings and beating them powerfully so that he was left breathless, but no more breathless than by what Jeremie did next.Jeremie came to him at once, erasing the last of the distance between them, and this time, Noah didn’t back away. The thin gap of space between their bodies sweltered. Still, Noah didn’t move. He didn’t move as Jeremie cupped Noah’s elbows, fingers grasping at bone. He didn’t move as Jeremie pulled him nearer. He didn’t even move when their faces were close enough for him to feel Jeremie’s warm breath against his mouth.
“Tell me you feel the same,” Jeremie whispered. It sounded like a prayer. His head was bowed slightly to be at level with Noah’s.
There was a pull in Noah’s stomach, an unfamiliar desire growing heavier. He was close enough now to see the velvet trimming on the collar of Jeremie’s coat, the paisley design of the white ascot at his neck. Jeremie’s lips lingered before his own, daring, eager, ravenous. It would’ve been effortless to give in, to lean his body into Jeremie’s, to be overtaken by the fever consuming him. He wanted to. Of that much he was certain, and it shocked him like nothing else ever had.
Tell me you feel the same, Jeremie had whispered.
And Noah, still fighting a war he hadn’t even known had begun long ago, had thought to, had nearly conceded to it. But then he saw an image of Jeremie’s father, cold and cruel, bringing his own son to ruins, and in the end, he couldn’t. He wouldn’t. For Jeremie’s sake, he couldn’t fall.
Firm in his resolve, he drew up his strength and stepped back out of Jeremie’s hold. The moment he did, the phoenix extinguished herself.
Tell me you feel the same.
Noah met his eyes, forcefully, meaningfully. “I don’t.”

EXCERPT:
I sling back another plastic cup of beer and chug all the contents down. Cheers fill the crowded room as I discard the empty Solo on the stained rug underneath the beer pong table. This place feels like a sauna from all the heat generating off the crush of people surrounding the game. I wipe a trickle of sweat from my brow. At the other end of the table my opponent stares me down like we’re in a draw or some shit. I have to stifle back my laughter. He twirls the small ping-pong ball in his hand and then it sails through the air.
It bounces twice and dings off the rim of the cup in the front, then rolls off the side of the table. Everyone makes “ooo” and “ahh” sounds. I smirk at the punk. I’ve only put away two cups, which weren’t completely filled, so all in all, one and half beers. Being that I’m no stranger to drinking or a lightweight, I’m practically sober. So his ass is going down. Him and his stupid Sigma Pi brothers. And yes, I’m going to make a show of it because I’m just that kind of person. Competitive and cocky.I’m about to make my move when a tall blond with a display of cleavage slinks up to me. “Hey, you.”
“Hey, yourself,” I say. Her delicious lips look like they need to be kissed and bitten right now.
She runs her tongue along them, and I gaze like it’s the most fascinating thing I’ve ever seen. Someone shouts, “Let’s get on with the fucking game, pussy, or are you wimping out over there?”
Snapping my attention from the sexy blond back to the asshole at the end of the table, I say, “Jealous a pretty girl is talking to me and not you, limp dick?”
He flips me off with a growl. “Better watch it, running your mouth, freshdouche. You’re in our house.” Wow, and to think this is the best insult this troll fuck has, such a shame. Probably wise of me not to keep goading the little bitch on. Seeing as I am in “his house,” as he eloquently put it. But here’s the thing about being me: I stopped giving a fuck a while ago. So this guy and everyone else here can kiss my ass.
I flip him off just to show him how much his piss-ass threat sunk in.
The pretty girl leans into me. Her scent of cinnamon and sugar assaults my senses, and then her lips touch my ear while her hand skims my crotch.
“I can be your good luck charm, handsome.”
I turn to her mouth and capture it with mine. Then I pull back. “Damn right you can.” I smack her ass with my free hand and toss the ball. It drops, swoosh like, right into my opponent’s cup.
And this is how my night went. At least that’s how I remember it.

The Starriest Summer:
BLURB:
Fifteen-year-old
Michelle saves the world on a daily basis…with her trusty video game
controller, of course! Naturally, she jumps at the chance to play an
experimental virtual reality game.
The beautiful fantasy
world of Starrs? Check. The power to mold matter? Check. No reset button? Wait,
she didn’t sign up for this!
Turns out Starrs is
really real, and to make matters worse, Michelle’s interference awakens the
Cycle of the Six Moons, a series of devastating trials that will devour the
universe.
Fighting the
apocalypse was way easier when danger stayed on the other side of the screen,
but Michelle finds a secret weapon in her new-found powers. She uses them to
rescue the crown prince of a powerful magic kingdom from their sworn enemies, a
technologically-advanced cult that strives to eradicate magical blood.
Michelle starts to
fall for Prince Jayse, the only one who believes Michelle to be a savior rather
than a curse. But not even video games could prepare her for what the cult has
in store for them…
An Eclipsing Autumn:
BLURB:
Deciding last minute
to stay in Starrs, Michelle continues her epic adventure as Goddess. After all,
learning how to save the world sure beats a year of pre-calculus. With her
friends by her side, Michelle travels to a city of scholars to learn the lore
of the Cycle of the Six Moons.
At first, the exotic
retreat turns romantic, as Michelle spends her free time exchanging sweet
letters with the crown prince, Jayse. But, during her studies, Michelle learns
something that drastically changes her game plan. Powerful blood must be
spilled to end the Cycle…blood that only runs through her veins and the prince
destined to fall in love with her.
During a celebration
honoring their enlightenment, Michelle and Jayse are whisked off to a rogue
city as trophies of a tournament, where only the strongest can claim a taste of
their blood. Gallant as ever, their guardian, Gediyon, enters to prevent harm
to his friends. Unfortunately for the contestants, the Cycle’s latest trial
prevents everyone from waking from a cursed slumber…
EXCERPT:
He pulls up the stone and looks at
it, then steps forward. “It’s
midnight.” Standing a few feet in front
of me, he lifts it from his neck and dangles the chain from both hands.
My heart wants to escape my
chest. I know what he’s going to
do. I watch him expectantly, wondering
if he can hear the drums of my heart. He
looks at me with his gorgeous green eyes, his cheeks tinged pink. Maybe they reflect the red of my own face.
“A few lifetimes ago, Cyal gave this
to Saei to protect her. Now it’s time I
return it to you.” He raises it above my
head as if it’s a crown and slips it around my neck. I catch the stone as it falls over my
chest. It’s still warm.
That was enough excitement for one
night, but then Jayse leans closer and places his cheek against mine. He’s going to kiss me. Oh God, he’s finally going to kiss me!
He doesn’t, and instead whispers
something even sweeter. “Happy birthday,
Michelle.”
Then I burst into tears, cover my
mouth with my hands, and gasp, “How did you know?”
He smiles bashfully, wiping my tears
away. He says, “You told me once.”
He deserves a kiss for this. I’m crying, laughing, and I throw my arms
around him. I don’t kiss him, and go on
bawling, “This is the first time I’ve ever had a birthday without my family.”
“I’m sure they’re celebrating the
day in honor of you.”
I don’t know if they are. Jayse tells me that he hasn’t told anyone else
it’s my birthday, and I want to keep it that way. I don’t want everyone treating me any more
special than they already have.
We don’t stay long at the Inner
Temple, because we need to be well-rested for the performance tomorrow night.
I hold Jayse’s hand while we walk
back to the guest house. I sigh every
now and then, thinking about how perfect his fingers feel intertwined with
mine. He has such a strong grip, but it
doesn’t hurt me. I feel safe.
My parents used to ask me if I felt
any different each birthday. When I was
little, I thought I felt older. Then I
started to lie to make them think I felt special.
Now that I’m sixteen, with the
responsibilities as the Cycle’s Creator, now that I’ve fallen in love, I
definitely feel different. I feel like
another person.
Guest Post:
Do the characters all come to you at the same time or do
some of them come to you as you write?
Before I begin writing the actual
story, I like to write an outline. This
includes a basic idea of the plot, the setting, and characters. When it comes to writing about the
characters, I come up with the names, ages, positions, and relation to the
protagonist. After all, these are the
people that the main character will have to encounter immediately upon
embarking into the story. I like to have
this information before I start writing, so I know how to write their
interactions. The protagonist would
treat someone who used to cheat on spelling tests in elementary school
differently than the hot new barista with the irresistible smile.
However, as the protagonist ventures
further out into the world, they’ll encounter other locations, and I tend to
populate these new places once the protagonist arrives.
So, to answer the question, it’s a
bit of both!

BLURB:
Krista Winter is in
need of legal counsel. Several years ago she was forced to flee her life as a
teacher in New Jersey after being shunned for practicing witchcraft, and her
past is about to catch up with her.
Jon Bartolo is a dedicated attorney. His days are spent helping his clients with their struggles, and his nights are spent in agony, lost in a world between life and death. His mother, who died three years ago, lurks in his house, suffering from a curse for eternity, without a final resting place.
A smoldering fire ignites between Jon and Krista almost immediately, however, he’s sure his secret would frighten any woman away. An afternoon escape brings them closer, but doubts linger between the love-struck couple.
Burning questions about how to fuse their futures together with so much of their past still clouding the future becomes a heavy burden that they’re both trying to bear on their own. It will take a touch of magic if there’s any hope in sight.

Excerpt:
Steadying herself, Krista stared
into his eyes with her heart racing. As Jon moved in again and plunged his
tongue deep into her mouth, he caressed her back, and she surrendered
mercifully to his touch. Each passion-filled kiss felt as if he was a long lost
lover who had reappeared and claimed her heart’s desire. There was no telling
what might happen next. Her whole body relaxed as he nuzzled her ear, teasing
her with playful nips at her neck. All rules had been broken, but it didn’t
matter. His hard shaft rubbed up against her, and she swayed back and forth,
unable to break away from temptation. Jon’s breathing sped up as his hands
traveled up and down her back. She quietly moaned, lost in another world. Every
movement brought her one step closer. Was she lonely enough to have sex with a
man she’d just met? Each kiss weakened her guard. Maybe it was fate. As his
hand trailed across her back, her body rocked with his. Each flicker of his
tongue along the sides of her mouth was electrifying, as if he wanted to devour
her, and she found herself in a trance-like state. This was what she’d been
missing. Running her hand across his firm bicep, the room spun. The warmth of
his body was raising her level of arousal. Here, in the middle of his office,
she experienced a passion like no other. Everything seemed right. Lust took
control of her senses, and she let herself go with it. With each kiss, he
cradled her in his arms, his embrace warm and protective like a warrior of
love. How did this happen? Had she found the man she was destined for, or was
it all a dream?
My
Review:
Krista Winter was forced to leave her life as teacher which
she loved in New Jersey for being a witch. Krista fled to New Hampshire to start
a new life and leave her old one behind. She opens a bath and body shop and her
little shop is doing fairly well. At least well enough that her ex-fiancé wants
a part of it. But Krista is not about to let him upset her life again so she
goes to see a lawyer to get some legal advice.
She makes an appointment and goes to see Jon Bartolo. Jon
like Krista has some secrets of his own. Jon and Krista hit it off right off
the bat. It is love at first sight.
Jon’s mother has been dead for three years now but she is
still living in Jon’s home/business. She is stuck between life and death. She
is a zombie. But don’t worry she is not the biting kind. No she is more of the
ghost variety. Jon wants to let his mother go but he doesn’t have much choice
in this matter. Jon has been searching for a way to help his mother pass on to
the next life but so far has had no luck.
He wants to be with Krista very much but he is afraid to
tell her his secret. He is afraid that she will run away. He doesn’t know that
Krista has some secrets of her own that she is afraid of telling.
Night Magic is a great little read it will keep you up at
night only because you can’t put it down. It is a very short read if life doesn’t
get in the way that is. I was just as hooked as Krista right from the first page.
If you love a good romance book with witches and ghost/zombies thrown in then
you are going to love Night Magic I know I did.

At eighteen, Sera Moore chose to go to culinary school while a higher power selected her to become an angel, specifically, an angel of death.
Now, twelve years later, Sera’s a successful baker during the day and performs her angelic duties at night. The only thing missing in her life is a man, but the last thing she wants is to fall head over wings in love.
But when a tenacious food critic won't take a hint, can Sera lower her wings long enough to risk her heart one more time?
