THE BODY INSTITUTE Bonus Scene
This is not a scene from the
book—but it could be. Morgan is the main character, and this is from the point
of view of KRISTA, one of her best friends. TeenDom is short for Teen Dominion,
a Twitter-like site for teens in the near future. Krista is fond of wearing
orange lipstick, hence, her @ladyorange handle.
Bling! A TeenDom private message comes in on my phone right as I’m
stepping off the Metro-Transit. I read as I hurry toward the school
complex.

major suckage. bad news just now.
I frown. My cousin Jared is not one for overblown drama, so
this must be serious. I nearly bump into a guy walking down the sidewalk while
my fingers blur over my keypad.
@ladyorange:
sorry…ur girlfriend dump u?
@trollmeister:
no, she’s cool. i got a fine notice from the health monitoring system saying
i’m 27 pounds over my ideal weight. mom’s flipping mad. we can’t afford a tax
fine.
Uh-oh. Twenty pounds is the max the government allows. After
six months of being over twenty, serious fines start happening.

u have to lose ALL of it?

yep. in 3 months. no way i can do that!
I chew my lip as I near the school. If he can’t lose the
weight that fast, there’s only one solution.

my friend Morgan helped this other girl lose 50 pounds in 3 months at The Body

no. u been living under a rock? u check into their clinic, get ur brainwaves
stored as a datafile, & someone else loses weight for u. u wake up all trim
& toned w/o doing ANYTHING.

nope. Morgan was hired as a Reducer. She got downloaded into this other chick
& did all the jogging & treadmilling & sweaty stuff. Even got rid
of the body’s junk food cravings.

they have financial aid. seriously, u should check it out.

Morgan Dey is a seventeen year old and of course still lives with her parents and her grandfather. Her grandfather has lives with them for a while and Morgan loves her parents and grandfather more than anything. She loves them so much that she wants to get a job to help her parents pay their bills and her grandfathers. He still owes a lot of money or credits as they call it now to the doctors and hospital when her grandmother got sick and died. Morgan also wants to go to tech school so she can make lots of credits and she want have to worry about bills. But with most of the jobs that she can get won’t even come close to paying for tech school much less help to pay all the bills that they owe.

I recieved a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.
Morgan Dey is a seventeen year old and of course still lives with her parents and her grandfather. She loves them so much that she wants to get a job to help her parents pay their bills and her grandfathers. He still owes a lot of money or credits as they call it now to the doctors and hospital when her grandmother got sick and died. Morgan also wants to go to tech school so she can make lots of credits and she want have to worry about bills. But with most of the jobs that she can get won’t even come close to paying for tech school much less help to pay all the bills that they owe.
But there is this one place that she can go to get a job
that will pay lots of credits that would help her family out a lot. This place
is called The Body Institute. At The Body Institute teens like her can become a
reducer. As a reducer they will take her brain waves out of her body and put
them in what is called a loaner after they make a data backup. A loaner is
someone who is overweight and doesn’t want to go through all the hard work
themselves. The Body Institute puts Morgan’s brain in someone else’s’ body and
helps them lose weight. She only has a certain amount of time to lose the
weight or she won’t get her credits. There are people that is protesting the
institute saying that it is wrong for people to be putting someone’s brain in
someone else’s body. But all Morgan is trying to do is help this person have a
better happier life.
When Morgan has done her job her brain is placed back into
her body and the memories that she had while being in a loaner’s body is erased
for privacy reasons. Morgan starts wonder if she can trust the people at the
institute. Are they telling them everything or are they lying to them? While
being in a loaner body Morgan starts having bits and pieces of her loaners
memories which she is not supposed to do. When things start to turn sour and
then starts going downhill, Morgan doesn’t know what to do. She knows she is
not supposed to be having these memories but when she ask about them she is
told that it is nothing to worry about that it happens sometimes.
They start having problems with protesters at the institutes
and Morgan starts to worry more and more. She wonders if she should she give up
trying to help the loaner that she is in and go back to her own body before it
is too late.
The Body Institute is like no other book that I have ever
read before. Once I started reading it I didn’t want to put it down and really
hated it when I did. Because our real life must go on we can’t live in the book
world for ever although it would be nice sometimes. But seriously if you have
not read The Body Institute then this one book that I highly recommend that you
give it a shot. If you like science fiction and dystopian then you are going to
love The Body Institute. The author Carol Riggs will take you to worlds that no
one has entered before. She will blow your mind with her amazing writing and storytelling.

I'm

novel THE BODY INSTITUTE explores the themes of society, identity, and body
image. I live in the beautiful, green state of Oregon and have a Studio Arts
degree; I'm an SCBWI member.
