Audiobook Tour: Ordinary Soil by Alex Woodard @RABTBookTours

Literary/Historical Fiction

Date Published: 8/12/25

Publisher: Greenleaf Book Group

Narrator: Scott Brick

Run Time: 8 hours and 35 minutes

“Ordinary Soil brings to haunting life the desperate realities of the American heartland but also offers a glimpse into a better future ... a call to action for all of us.” — WOODY HARRELSON

Haunted by a shadow from the past, a young farmer attempts suicide beneath a rotting burial elm, unearthing a dark ancestral history. But deep beneath the diseased generational roots lies a powerful secret — one that could save both the man and the land.

Interview with Alex Woodard

What is your favorite part of the book?

    The end.

See? Made you want to read the whole thing, right?

Honestly, my favorite part (as far as writing process) was the first chapter. The narrative fell out of me, as if I was just a channel for something else. That’s how I knew I had to keep going.

Does your book have a lesson? Moral?

Yes…you get out what you put in. From your body to mind and spirit, from the land to your relationships...everything reflects what you give it.

Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

The two main characters are loosely based off of real people…a real doctor and real farmer, whose lives intersected in real life.

Of all the characters you have created, which is your favorite and why?

Probably the main character’s brother, Adam. He’s the guy that makes the worst decisions, but has the biggest heart. I’m a sucker for heart.

What character in your book are you least likely to get along with?

Ironically, the main character. I tend to get impatient with people who are so stuck in their ways that they won’t make a change, even when all the evidence points that way.

What would the main character in your book have to say about you?

Well, that’s a good question considering my answer to the previous one! He’d probably say I was a little quick to judge guys like him, but my heart is in the right place. He’d be right.

Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?

In this case, both. The sequel to Ordinary Soil is being released this month, and I’m in the middle of writing the third in the trilogy. I want a reader to be able to pick up any one of them though, and not wonder what the heck is going on.

Book Tour: Move Into Meaning by Courtney McElvain @RABTBookTours

Essential Spiritual Exercises for a Fulfilled Life

Religion / Nonfiction / Christian Living

Date Published: July 15, 2025

Publisher: Lucid Books Publishing

Who is God when life falls apart? Can faith coexist with fear, difficulty, or conflict? In this compelling debut, Courtney McElvain explores the greatest commandment—loving God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength—and what it means for our whole person. She unpacks how God’s design for our heart, mind, body, and soul equips us to overcome anxiety, break free from self-limiting beliefs, and spiritual stagnation. Alongside this, she highlights the transformative power of loving others as ourselves, creating deeper connections and purpose within our relationships. Tackling tough questions like navigating tragedy or addressing polarizing topics such as practicing yoga, this book is a guide to spiritual, emotional, and physical transformation through a deeper understanding of who God is and how He’s working in your story.

Interview with Courtney McElvain

How did publishing your first book change your process of writing?

I’m really a baby author, so this was the first time I paid any attention to what my process even was. At first, I thought I’d write in a neat, linear fashion, start to finish, chapter by chapter. The reality was very different. It felt more like a swirl of ideas that surfaced at the most unexpected times. I had to learn to capture them right away, because if I didn’t, they’d be gone forever and so would the book that eventually ended up in my hands.

What was an early experience where you learned that language had power?

This is such a good question. For me, I think I first realized the power of language in the way words could shift your entire being, whether it was encouragement from a teacher, a Bible verse spoken at the right time, or even the sting of criticism. Words land deeply. They can either lift someone up or cut them down. That awareness has stayed with me and made me want to use words that give life.

What one thing would you give up to become a better writer?

My best time to write is between six in the morning and late morning. But right now, that’s also when I’m getting my kids off to school and leading our wealth management firm. I’m not willing to give up those priorities. So for this season, I write on weekends while the house is quiet and everyone else is still sleeping. It means my books take longer to finish, but I’m okay with that. Writing is a calling, but so is my family, and I want to be present for both.

Tell us a little about yourself? Perhaps something not many people know?

I’m an Army veteran. Most people know me as a wealth manager and author, but not many know about my time spent in the Army as a Korean Linguist.

If you had to do something differently as a child or teenager to become a better writer as an adult, what would you do?

If I could go back to my younger self, I’d tell her to write sooner and more often. Not for a grade, not for an assignment, but just to practice putting thoughts into words. Journaling, even writing down prayers. I think it would have helped me discover my voice much earlier. It took me a long time to realize I was ‘allowed’ to write.

What is the biggest surprise that you experienced after becoming a writer?

The biggest surprise was that what started as just one book idea has turned into a passion-driven writing practice for my daily life. Now the book ideas keep flowing in, and I’m starting to believe that I can call myself an author.

Could you tell us a bit about your most recent book and why it is a must-read?

My book really leans into the reality that faith doesn’t always come easy. We all walk through seasons of fear, difficulty, and conflict, and it’s in those moments that we have to learn what it truly means to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. I wanted to make it both practical and spiritual giving readers simple tools to quiet anxiety, let go of self-limiting beliefs, and step into a life of deeper meaning. At its core, the book is about paying attention to who God is and how He is moving in your story—so you can discover His purpose for your life. That kind of discovery changes everything: the way you see yourself, and the way you love others.

Jenna McGregor Cozy Mystery #3

by Willow Thorne

Published: September 30, 2025

Genre: Cozy Mystery, Mystery, Suspense, Cozy Culinary Mystery, Cozy Animal Mystery, Amateur Sleuth Mysteries

Blurb:

Jenna McGregor's life in Maple Grove is a perfect blend of small-town charm and caffeine-fueled chaos. Her days are filled with running her cozy café, wrangling her accident-prone golden retriever, Biscuit, and trying to keep her best friend, Lisa, grounded in a reality that doesn't involve psychic visions.

But when a new "wellness" commune called The Grove Collective arrives, their too-calm leader, Eliad, threatens to disrupt the peace. Lisa is immediately drawn to their glowing produce and spiritual platitudes, and before long, she's trading her eccentric style for linen robes and otherworldly auras.

When a college student overdoses on a mysterious tonic linked to The Grove, Jenna knows something far more sinister is brewing than just herbal tea. Teaming up with her enigmatic, ex-spy neighbor, Mildred, and the town's handsome police chief, Joe, Jenna must leave her comfort zone to uncover the truth.

From a frantic undercover visit to a full-blown infiltration, Jenna races against the clock to expose The Grove's conspiracy before she loses her best friend—and her town—to a darkness that has taken root right under their noses.

My Review:

Harvest of Shadows and Dark Brews is a fascinating and engrossing novel that kept me thoroughly engaged from start to finish. The tension had me on the edge of my seat the entire time as I tried to unravel the unfolding mystery.

A mysterious new group has arrived in town. Jenna's friend Lisa has gone missing, last seen with a group called The Grove Collective. The Grove is drawing people into their grasp one by one. If they are not stopped soon, they could take over the entire town.

With the assistance of her former spy neighbor, Mildred, and the town's charming police chief, Joe, Jenna goes undercover to rescue Lisa and protect the community.

A college student is hospitalized after overdosing on a tonic linked to The Grove. Jenna suspects that the overdose and Lisa's disappearance are connected.

Harvest of Shadows and Dark Brews stands out on its own and is sure to keep your interest for hours or even longer, as some stories do. I look forward to reading more of Jenna McGregor’s adventures soon.

I highly recommend picking up a copy of Harvest of Shadows and Dark Brews today for another exciting mystery to solve.

Book Tour + #Giveaway: The Patron Saint of Lost Girls by Maureen Aitken @MaureenTAitken @RABTBookTours

Literary Fiction / Short Story Collection

Date Published: 09-16-2025

Publisher: Wayne State University Press

In 1970s and '80s Detroit, the city wrestles with an unending economic downturn, increasing violence, and white exodus to the suburbs. Amid all of this is twentysomething Mary who is just trying to grapple with her identity in a world filled with uncertainty.

In this collection of linked stories, we follow Mary as she seeks to cope with and withstand hardship and confront her fears of exploitation, abuse, and death. Along the way, she delves into the complex yet nurturing relationships with her family and friends who teach her to love better, live fuller, and question power. The Patron Saint of Lost Girls presents an unflinching tale of life in the late twentieth-century postindustrial Midwest.

Interview with Maureen Aitken

What is your favorite part of the book?

My favorite parts of the book are the first story and the last. The start has such a constrained kind of hope and by the end there is more maturity and resonance with Mary as a person. She is more grounded and understands love in a different way.

Does your book have a lesson? Moral?

Resilience and a deeper understanding of love are two lessons in the collection.

Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

They come from the imagination, but the place and all the people I’ve loved influenced what I write and how I write.

Of all the characters you have created, which is your favorite and why?

Mary, the main character, is my favorite. And she is my favorite when she is funny. It’s dark humor, but it’s there.

What character in your book are you least likely to get along with?

The mean girls in “The Family Trip” are the people I most dislike today. I still see that kind of cruel dismissal as an adult. It’s terrible.

What would the main character in your book have to say about you?

“She needs to write me into a vacation in France. What about a story in Martha’s Vinyard?”

Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?

Friendship, sisterhood, creativity, courage, and love are ideas that I might write about forever.

Excerpt:

The Sun had not yet risen above the ruins of the Mechouar Palace, but at the mosque nearby many Muslim people of the city of Tlemcen were already at their morning prayer. It was a great privilege to be admitted to one of the oldest mosques in Algeria, over eight hundred years old, and an even greater privilege to be allowed to pray before the mihrab there among the great white columns that lined the enormous hall. As the prayers ended, there was a gentle rustling of movement as the faithful rose and exited to the open and airy marble-tiled courtyard of the mosque, still quiet in the twilight of dawn. Isabel retrieved her leather boots and exited a side door beneath the shadow of the towering brick minaret. Covered by her tightly drawn dark brown burnouse, khaki pants, white shirt, and a black hijab, Isabel walked along the great stone wall to the main gate of the palace. The few buildings in the complex that were still usable had been made into offices for the French army, but the pool and gardens of the central courtyard were peaceful and shadowy. She passed an alcove that featured Islamic calligraphy carved into the stucco, and Isabel stopped to read it: “Allah is God, there is no god but He: the King.”

A quiet voice behind her asked: “Madame Pedersen?”

She turned to find a short, elegantly dressed French officer approaching her. His flat-topped white hair was soldierly, but his crisp, tailored uniform, polished boots, and wide waxed mustache displayed a carefully composed appearance.

Peace be with you,” she said, casting her eyes downward and crossing her arm over her chest as she nodded.

Peace be with you, Madame. I apologize if I disturbed you; will you come inside?”

As you wish.”

She followed the French colonel to a charming wood-paneled room overlooking an orchard of citrus trees bearing large green fruit. The colonel sat on a bare wood chair beside a wide wooden table, crossed his legs, and twirled the end of his wide mustache. Isabel stood silently before him in a respectful posture.

I have the greatest respect for your beliefs, my dear, but it would be helpful to me if you would sit and speak to me informally. Would you be so kind?”

Of course,” she said and she sat on the chair beside his. Her demeanor now expressed more of her experience and self-assurance, her hijab more a symbol of her confidence than of her humility. The colonel raised an eyebrow in appreciation of her serene face and brilliant blue eyes.

Book Tour: The Smallest of Miracles by Douglas Carpenter @miracles65720 @RABTBookTours

Literary Fiction

Date Published: March 6, 2025

Publisher: Seacoast Press

One choice. One moment. A ripple that changes everything.

In The Smallest of Miracles, Douglas Carpenter crafts a masterful literary debut that merges gripping storytelling with profound life lessons. The novel follows Ted Carrington, a wealthy, brilliant, and emotionally distant man on the autism spectrum, who returns to the private elementary school that shaped him—for better and worse. He intends to make a large donation, but what begins as a business transaction slowly becomes a reckoning with his past.

As the story transitions between Ted’s present and his childhood, readers meet the deeply flawed, often cruel boy he once was—especially to a vulnerable new classmate named Anna. But life, in its quiet way, begins to turn his world upside down.

What emerges is not only Ted’s transformation, but an invitation to the reader: to reflect, to slow down, and to reconsider how the smallest decisions—the ones we barely notice—can lead to the greatest changes.

This is not just a novel. It’s a call to awareness. A self-improvement guide disguised as a coming-of-age story.

📘 "Just like everything in life, meaning is found in the small details."
📘 "A golfer knows a 2-inch putt counts the same as a 200-yard drive. Life is very similar..."
📘 "Change is the fertilizer of life. It often stinks, but it is necessary for growth."

🔹 Perfect for fans of literary fiction with depth
🔹 A powerful read for young adults and up
🔹 Ideal for classrooms and book clubs seeking discussion-worthy themes

Read it once for the story. Read it again for the insight.

About the Author

Douglas Carpenter is not your typical author. A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Douglas became the youngest stockbroker in the U.S. at just 17 and currently owns two accounting firms and an asset management company in New York. Despite a thriving career in finance, his true passion lies in storytelling.

His debut novel, The Smallest of Miracles, took ten years to write—a deeply personal and intricately crafted journey of self-discovery and transformation. Drawing on his keen eye for detail and analysis, Douglas poured over every word, shaping a literary fiction novel that functions as both an engaging story and a guide to personal growth.

The book explores how tiny, seemingly insignificant choices shape our lives far more than major events. Readers are invited to slow down, reflect, and discover truths hidden in the smallest details—just as Douglas has done through his writing.

Douglas hopes his novel will find a place in high school curricula and on the bookshelves of thoughtful readers young and old. His message is clear: "The truth is always hidden behind things that are out of place."

Connect with Douglas Carpenter to discover a new perspective on life, character, and the miraculous power of small decisions.

Music Fiction

Date Published: 09-30-2025

Publisher: Covfefe Press

For anyone who's ever said, "They're playing my song!"

On Halloween Eve, 1961, in his dingy Bronx walkup apartment, seventeen-year-old Jimmy Welton hears the opening notes of a song in his head. Jimmy’s still mourning his firefighter father, who taught him to play the guitar but recently died in a house fire, leaving his family destitute. Jimmy takes this song, about all he misses from his life now, to the New York amusement park where he works after school. There, he meets Mark Morgan, a rebellious teen with his own band, who eventually invites Jimmy to join them. And the rest is rock'n roll history...
The GooseBumps become a worldwide phenomenon, and the songs they write and sing together become the backbone of rock musical history. And the song Jimmy first heard on Halloween, "Wrapped in Gauze", becomes the song that not only comforts him in that terrible time but also comforts others: Victoria, recently divorced and dealing with an unthinkable family tragedy; Carolyn, whose final flippant words to someone in pain can't be taken back; and Jack, battling back from unimaginable loss with the help of his cheeky therapist and a song he thinks he hates.

SCENES FROM A SONG is the story of a song that makes us smile, that breaks our hearts, that stays with us forever, and the very special band that started it all.
