Interview with Lisa Brown Roberts

What inspired you to write THE REPLACEMENT CRUSH?

A couple of things. I am in awe of the book blogging world and I wanted to write about a blogger who knew all about romance novels but struggled with real-life romance. Also, I liked the idea of a girl making a list of guys she “should” like and working her way through the list.

When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

Second grade, age seven. My teacher had a shoebox full of story ideas and we wrote stories based on the idea cards in the box. Eventually she told me I didn’t need to use the box anymore, I could use my own ideas - which were very strange, by the way – like a family of coffee cups living in the ocean.

What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

Probably first grade.

What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

I love romance, mysteries, women’s fiction, YA, and interesting nonfiction about extraordinary lives and experiences. When my son raves about a fantasy or sci-fi book he enjoys, I usually check it out, too.

What is your favorite book?

That’s very tough. I don’t know that I can pick just one, but for right now I’ll say Pride and Prejudice.

You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

Well, again this one is very tough, but to tie into question five, I’ll go with Jane Austen. She was brilliant, with sly humor, satirical send-ups of society, and romance, of course.

If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

I wouldn’t.  I’d rather go forward to the future- I’m more of a Star Trek person. I wouldn’t go backwards because life was so much more difficult – just surviving took so much effort and luck. What’s ironic is that I read a lot of historical romance – but those characters usually live a certain type of privileged life.

When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

It depends on the book. Some books come easier than others. One of my previous books was a real bear to write, but my brilliant editor helped me work out the plot issues I was struggling with. The book was well received by readers, thank goodness!

My favorite part of writing is the first draft, when I’m capturing all the raw emotion of the story and watching my characters fall in love for the first time.

Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

I love animals! Currently I have one dog and two cats, and a new puppy is on the horizon for later this fall.

What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?

Food is one of my favorite things. I love going to new restaurants with family and friends. Some of my favorites are sushi, pasta, and desserts of all types. I will try anything with fresh ginger in it – it’s my catnip.

Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Never, ever give up. If you want this badly enough, you’re going to have to work very hard, go through rejections, grow a thick skin when putting your work out for critique and submissions to publishers or agents, and then grow an even thicker skin with reviews. But if you are one of those people who has to write (and you know who you are) it’s all worth it in the end.

Also – write every day if you can, or most days. I believe you build up your writing “muscles” this way and train your creative brain to be ready to work whenever you sit down at your computer or with your notebook. And you’re much more likely to finish something this way.

Thank you for having me on your blog today!

Lisa Brown Roberts still hasn't recovered from the teenage trauma of nearly tweezing off both eyebrows and having to pencil them in for an entire school year. This and other angst-filled memories inspire her to write YA books about navigating life's painful and funny dramas, and falling in love along the way.

Her almost forever home is Colorado, though she occasionally pines for the days when she lived within walking distance of the Pacific Ocean. Her house is full of books, boys, four-legged prima donnas, and lots of laughter.

Soul Finder
Jacinta Maree
(The Immortal Gene, #2)
Publication date: September 16th 2016
Genres: Dystopian, New Adult, Supernatural

Since being discovered as Soulless, Nadia has become a target for both terrorist groups and government corporations. Now, her only hope for survival rests in the hands of the man sent out to kill her: Diesel, the Mad Dog terrorist.

Diesel is determined to free himself of the never ending curse of reincarnation and the haunting memories that plague his mind. But when his search leads him to Nadia, a greater desire stills him from taking her life.

Unable to see into Diesel’s cracking mind, Nadia instead puts her faith into his strength, fueled by eleven generations of unmatched rage and insanity. Their tight-rope relationship balances the two between life and death, love and rage, trust and betrayal.

Tension pulls at the hems of their dangerous companionship, and as time runs out all madmen must eventually make their choice.

Book two of the thrilling Immortal Gene series dives deeper into the danger of trusting your heart over your head.

Sequel to:
Soulless

EXCERPT:

Diesel slowly stood. “I have been thinking a lot lately. About how delicate this situation is. I have had many experiences in hostage situations. But you are different. Difficult.” He stepped around the table. I shuffled back. His voice dropped and curled with a gentle accent that didn’t suit his pitch. A Russian accent, spoken through an English voice. Krane. He jabbed at his own temple with the gun. “You’ve done something to me. You’ve planted this desire in my head. Something I need to stamp out.” His eyes shot down and his eyebrows twitched, pinched by a thought.
“I need you to stay with me, Nadia. I have sacrificed so much for you. Don’t you get it? You and me, we are more than life. We are more than this. Without you I will crumple into ruins.” The earnestly behind his words shuddered his breath. Weakened his body. I blinked at the poetry of it. At first I thought I was the wax, bending and breaking within Diesel’s presence, but it turned out I was the flame. I was destroying him.
“You forget.” I turned the gun against my own head. “I know your weakness too.”

“Little brother forgot about you?” Hearing his voice again makes me grit my teeth in annoyance. I stare straight ahead, shoving my phone back into my pocket and crossing my arms over my chest. I refuse to give him any attention after what just happened. When he realizes I’m not going to respond, he sighs. “C’mon, let me give you a ride. Max probably just fell asleep or something.”
He reaches for my elbow, and I jerk out of his reach. “No, that’s okay. I’ll just go back to my room and wait for him. He’ll probably be there by the time I get there.”
Clay makes a noise in his throat, but I’m not sure if he’s agreeing with me or not. “Or, you could just come with me and yell at him sooner.” “You know you want to,” he continues to cajole me. “Just think how bad he’s going to feel knowing you had to bum a ride from me. When you finally forgive him, he’ll be ready to promise you anything. Hell, that assmunch will probably give you his car if you want it.” He bumps shoulders with me, a hopeful grin on his face.
I can’t stop the answering grin that crosses mine. “Please, like anyone would want the Great Pumpkin.” My face flames as soon as the words leave my mouth. I clap my hands over it like it’s enough to bring them back, but it’s too late. Ohmigod! I’ve never told anyone my secret name for Max’s car. He’s going to kill me if he finds out.
Clay doubles over laughing, muttering, “Great Pumpkin. Holy shit, that’s funny. Great Pumpkin!” I’ve never seen him laugh so hard. He’s almost in tears. Once he calms himself down, he looks over at me, a huge smile on his face. “That’s classic. I can’t wait to see his face when I tell him what you call his precious baby.”
“No!” I shriek, dropping my hands from my mouth and holding them out towards him. “Clay. Seriously. You can’t tell him! He’d be so mad. You have to promise. Please! I’ll do anything!” Shit! I didn’t mean to say that.
Clay looks over at me, his grin even wider. I didn’t think it could get bigger than it already was. “Anything? Hmm, that could be interesting.”
He looks like he’s considering his options, so I hurry to clarify, “Anything that isn’t sexual, illegal or immoral.” Clay’s face falls, and swear to God, he pouts.
“Well, you’re no fun.”
I roll my eyes. “No, I’m just not stupid and I don’t want to end up expelled or in jail or the health clinic because you gave me the Clap.”
“The Clap?!” Clay puts a hand over his heart, gasping like he’s wounded. “I can’t believe you’d think that of me, Kitty Kat. I always, always wrap my guy. No STD’s here.” He runs his hand down his stomach, resting it on the button of his jeans as he leers at me. “Don’t be shy, little kitten. If you want to see, you just have to ask.”
Cringing away from him, I make a gagging sound. “You’re such a pig. I wouldn’t touch you if you were the last guy on Earth, and it was up to us to procreate.”

Blurb Blitz + #Giveaway: Under a Purple Moon by Beverly Stowe McClure @beverlymcclure @GoddessFish

Under a Purple Moon
by Beverly Stowe McClure
GENRE:  YA contemporary

BLURB:

Eden Rose has learned to deal with her mother's criticism that she can do nothing right. What she can't deal with are the arguments between her parents. To escape their angry words, she finds refuge in an old abandoned house. She always returns home, hoping her mother will love her one day, even though Eden's not sure what the word love means.

Excerpt:

“Done.” A lighter, happier tune floated around us. Humming along, Murphy thumped his fingers on his knee. With the warm room, the music, and Murphy close by, my body relaxed. My mind could not relax, however. I remembered every little detail of the past hour. Nora my mother insisted I call her by her name told me I put too much salt in the meatloaf. She said I also set the table wrong. According to her, I couldn’t do anything right. The argument started when Dad defended me. So here I am, for the second or third time this week.

“Eden, Eden. You okay?”

Murphy shook my shoulder gently, dragging me from my thoughts. “I’m okay.”

“You sure.? Why are you crying?’

“Crying?” I touched my cheek. Dampness chilled my fingers.

He handed me a napkin. “You want to talk about it?”

I wiped my eyes and drippy nose. “No.”

“All right. You want to play a game?”

“What do you have in mind?”

A light tapping noise from the direction of the front door interrupted Murphy’s answer. I scooted closer to him and whispered, “Murph, did you hear that?”

“What?”

I clicked off the CD player.

The tapping repeated itself.

“That. Listen. Someone’s at the door.” I snuffed out the candles.

A muffled voice called, “Murph, it’s me.”

I eyed Murphy. “Whoever’s out there knows your name.”

“Yeah, I better let him in.”

Book Blast + #Giveaway: The Fiduciary Delusion by John Molik @GoddessFish

The Fiduciary Delusion
by John Molik
GENRE: Thriller (conspiracy)

BLURB:

An unambitious young man finally finds himself, only to nearly lose everything in an apparent web of international economic terrorism and intrigue. But, as his world begins to unravel, has he become genuinely delusional? Or is he really on to one of the most dangerous global conspiracies of all time? Against all odds, only love and a true friend's faith can save both him and the world as we know it from the abusive power of evil.

Excerpt:

'Reynolds? Of MI6?' shouted Marshall Rand, the Inspector General of the US Treasury.

'Yes, agent Patel has confirmed this with that reception desk employee at the hotel

where the memory stick was dropped,' replied Arun Marwah, Director of the India Intelligence Bureau.

Marshall Rand squinted.  'And this employee?  He can swear that he can identify him as the man who actually dropped the flash drive?'

'That is correct, sir.'

Marshall squirmed and mumbled a few things then quickly, but politely, ended the phone call.

Standing up, he put his hands on his hips, walked over to the window and stared down at the mass in motion filled with cars, trucks, and taxis, all crawling along the avenue below the banks, hedge fund hyenas, fancy restaurants, and big office towers.  Above, he could hear the sound of a commercial airliner departing Washington's National airport to the Northeast.  A city humming, entirely greased by cash, credit, money, moolah all created out of thin air by a cartel running the world's private banking operations.  Those that bank on that sexy fiat drug, that fiduciary smack attack that greases the invisible hand, are depending on just one thing, its continual unending supply and endless promise.  Any rapid withdrawal of the punch bowl, and the party's over.  The hooked speculators, opportunists, horders, spenders, trickle downers, everyone in the system, look up to us, all strung out and begging for a chance for a seat, any seat, at the global banquet. But, what happens when it's over?  He began to swea
t just thinking about how all civilizations must inevitably go through this when he suddenly noticed the deciduous trees along the park that stood there resolute, having had lost most of their leaves.  Quickly glimpsing the street lights changing from green to yellow to red, he lost himself in his thoughts.  It's a cycle, a historical cycle that not one civilization or empire has ever been able to avoid.  It starts with the warrior stage, heroism, honor.  Next comes the intellectual phase with its laws, order,

justice, art, music, and entertainment.  Society, now cocooned, is able to flourish.  Then, comes the Merchant phase with its rapid wealth distribution, free trade, increases in standards of living, and the development of modern conveniences.  Oligarchs form to control resources, then begin warring.  Greed, selfishness, and avarice marks the end of the stage.  My job, my sole purpose, is to protect the

Intellectual phase and to keep it running, but this noble pursuit has been exposed by history as being inevitably futile.  It's as if there is an inner knowing deep seated in the human mind that senses what comes next.  Chaos.  The final stage of outright theft, civil unrest, and collapse.  All that was built up, falls.  The thieves, these naked emperors, who connived, pillaged and lied to the population are hunted

down and destroyed.  A power vacuum is formed and once again, the warriors assert themselves.  The cycle begins again.

Rand shook his head, then walked back to his desk and pulled up his secured Adobe Connect entering a password.  An entry popped up: London. Private. He clicked on it.

'Sir, I am so sorry to bother you,' started Rand, 'but something serious has come up.'

'Yes, well what is it then?' replied the man with disinterest.  He had a voice and accent much like John Major, the former British Prime Minister.

'I'm sure Eckhart has informed you on what the agency had uncovered in India.'

Silence.

'Well, unfortunately, it goes deeper.” He hesitated. “Much deeper than we ever imagined.”

EXCERPT:

All your weight, it falls on me. It brings me down.
Truer words have never been spoken. My family and their feelings, that’s the weight of my world on my shoulders right now. How am I supposed to tell my overprotective mother, who freaks out over a sniffle…that, I’m…dying? My brother, Ronny, out doing his job, protecting us, battling on the front lines. Is it fair to distract him from his task at hand? Maybe he gets killed, or maybe his buddy takes a bullet? Why, so I can feel better? What about dad? Thoughts of the man that stuffs a pink can of mace and rape whistle in my stocking every year, and my burden just got heavier. And last but not least, my best friend, Lola. We’ve been the odd couple since the tampon video in fourth grade. Neat as pin, she never has loose ends, never commits to anything, no tangles no mess. That’s where I come in. I’m a friggin mess. Everything I touch gets smudged. Or at least, I’ve been told that, since as far back as I can even remember leaving a mess. Possibly, Lola’s bored with her muted tones life, maybe that’s why she steps into my sunshine and rainbows. Cluttered with dust motes, dancing on sun rays, like spritely fairies. Could be. So, what happens when I tell her I’m taking the sun with me? Some days, I can’t get off this sagging futon. Between the pain, the isolation, the guilt, the secret… I just can’t. I look at the website again. The F#ck It List. A place to put your Never have I ever… and you’ll be matched with the right person for you. I’m not interested in the sexual stuff. I’m so over that, and besides, my boyfriend, well, not boyfriend, stops by twice a week and we’re compatible enough as it is. And he’s another one. I broke up with him, so I wouldn’t have to paste a smile on twice a week and pretend like my world’s not falling apart. I love him, but man, does he need a lot of coddling. I haven’t brought myself to click past the privacy screen. That’s not what I’m interested in. The thing my nurse keeps talking to me about. My chemo nurse, Courtney, whispered to me. “You need someone to talk to, get things off your chest. I know you don’t want to burden your family, Chloe, but who takes your burden?” I shrugged, not really caring one way or the other. “I’ll be dead soon, so who cares? They can bury it with me.” She smacked my hand, the one without the IV. She was the one who had to poke around for an hour to find it, so she was protecting it like gold. But her words were kind. “Just like that. Who do you get to say those things too? You’re too worried about acting normal for your chemo buddy over there.” Em’s on her phone. She hates needles. I do too. “You need someone to hear you and not your cancer, you got me?” Her eyes look so compassionate, so loving I nod. She rests her hand on top of mine. I didn’t realize I was crying. “It’s my first time, I’m still a rookie.” I blubber out. She produces a tissue box from thin air and rubs my hand. “I have a friend; grandson has a website.” She lowers her voice. “It’s like a sex something or other,” then she’s back to full volume, “but that’s just to raise money for charity. I know she said he’s always looking for people with illnesses to help. “I guess my face must look funny, because she feels the need to add, “not like murder or anything like that.” I laugh. “Honestly, I was just wondering when this nausea would start to go away.” She nods, and squeezes my hand. “It doesn’t.” Later, when I’m pumped full of poison, she presents me with a gift bag. It’s got Band-Aids and syringes all over it. “Wow, Courtney how’d you know it was my birthday?” She laughs, “Well it kind of is. It’s your Chemo-day. You’re very first. Congratulations, kiddo, you made it through. Enjoy. Inside is the softest, most luxurious cashmere blanket. Pink, with raised dots. “Very chic, Courtney. I love it!” She hugs me and wraps it around my shoulders. “For the chills,” she whispers in my ear and I nod. She reaches in the bag and takes out a box of masks. “Remember your nadir.” There’s hard candies to suck on, for when my mouths dry. And an oral bag! With a rainbow toothbrush. “Thanks so much, I would’ve never thought of any of this. On the very bottom, a free month membership to Netflix. “For when you can’t make it out, but still want to watch something.” “I’m touched, really.” I use my new blanket, to wipe away a tear. “But I’ll have to read up on the rules, I don’t know a thing about Netflix.” As I leave, in search of my chemo buddy, who I haven’t seen in the last thirty minutes, Courtney calls out to me. “Chloe, did you want me to check on that thing, Mason’s website?” I think about it. I’ve got nothing better to do. “Sure.” That was four months ago. I’ll never see her again, chemo’s done dude. I’ll miss her. But not in the add another brick to the pile way. No, I’ll miss having someone who listens with their whole self. Two dots, connected by Courtney.

Except, she suspects her heart may be falling for her best friend Claude, a common smithie in the family’s steam forge. When Claude leaves for New France in search of a better life, Marguerite decides to follow him and test her suspicions of love. Only the trip proves to be more harrowing than she anticipated. Love, adventure and restitution await her, if she can survive the voyage.

About-the-Author2
L. Statham

Leigh Statham was raised in the wilds of rural Idaho, but found her heart in New York City. She worked as a waitress, maid, artist, math teacher, nurse, web designer, art director, thirty-foot inflatable pig and mule wrangler before she settled down in the semi-quiet role of wife, mother and writer. She resides in North Carolina with her husband, four children, five chickens and two suspected serial killer cats. If the air is cool and the sun is just coming up over the horizon, you can find her running the streets of her small town, plotting her next novel with the sort of intensity that will one day get her hit by a car.
