Book Excerpt

For KXXX TV and KXXX AM Radio News, this is Katie Carlson with your mid-morning eye-in-the-sky traffic report, and it’s an easy one: It’s messed up EVERYWHERE! So far, the 405 South is backed up all the way to the 101. So, if you are going into Hollywood this morning, you are going to be late for that audition. Also, there is an injury crash on the Eastbound 10. So, if you are heading into downtown LA, you might want to bring a magazine or get some knitting done. If you are going to LAX, forget it, call mom back east and tell her you will be driving out instead. Just Kidding! Any way, this is Katie Carlson with the Los Angeles mid-morning traffic report. Enjoy your commute everybody, NOT!

* * *

As the blare of the clock radio on the night table jolted her awake, Shari  Barnes rubbed her eyes, blew her long brown hair out of her face, and snuggled into Nathan Townsend’s chest. She curled her body around his middle and took a deep whiff of his salty, masculine neck.

But she couldn’t ignore the voice on the radio.

“Monday morning traffic,” she sighed.

Nathan matched the sigh and put his arms around her. “At least you don’t have to drive over the hill.”

“Yeah, I would just die if I had to drive into Beverly Hills every day to work in a beautiful office.” Shari giggled and disappeared under their thick blue comforter for a few more moments of sleepy-headed bliss. She felt Nathan stretch up, and a moment later the radio shut off. Then he slid down next to her in the single bed they shared in their Studio City apartment, a few blocks north of Ventura Boulevard. The constant drone and rumble of another L.A. morning came clearly through the open window: cars honking, rock music blaring, the frantic scurrying sounds of the film shoot a few blocks away. Shari ran her bare feet up the inside of Nathan’s thigh.

He jumped. “Shit, your feet are cold.” He pushed her legs off of him.

“What time is it?” she murmured between kisses.

“Um, seven.” He nuzzled her neck and she felt him becoming erect against her.

“No time for that!” She threw off the covers. “Gotta be at work on time for once; gotta get my asp out of bed.”

“There’s a snake in the bed?” Nathan grabbed her with both hands and gave her belly gentle nips.

“Yeah, of the one-eyed variety.” Shari leaped to the floor and padded naked into the bathroom. She turned the hot water in the shower to high and stepped in, filling the small bathroom with steam.

She had just poured a green drop of shampoo into her palm and was running her hands together when the flimsy yellow and white shower curtain flew back and Nathan grinned in at her. She smiled back, surprised by neither his arrival nor the partial hard-on that preceded him.

“Mind if we join you?” he asked.

“There’s enough shampoo for everybody,” Shari said as she rubbed her hands across her scalp.

He stepped into the stall, pulled the curtain closed and began to lather her hair for her. She put her hands on his back, feeling the taut muscles and the water streaming there, but did not reach down between them. It took him about five seconds to realize it and hold her away.

“You okay?”

“Fine….”

“Don’t lie; I can always tell when you have something on your mind.”

“You know me better than I know me,” she said.

“You know it.” He pushed her wet hair over her shoulders. “Come on, give.”

“I was thinking maybe I should get a second job.”

“You’re worrying about money again?”

“Well, I have to shoot my student thesis film this year or I won’t graduate. But where am I going to get the money I need?”

“How much do you need?”

“At least five figures.”

My Review:

CRASHERS is filled with unexpected twists and turns that left me astonished and speechless on numerous occasions, questioning what was unfolding. The tension was palpable, keeping me glued to each sentence as I hurried to uncover the mystery.

The narrative features a rich array of characters, each with their own dilemmas. First, we have Nathan, who has dedicated over a year of hard work to secure a contract that would guarantee him a significant promotion. Just when he believed he was on the verge of landing the deal and achieving his career milestone, it was taken away in an instant. One moment he was confident about the new position, and the next, it vanished along with his credentials.

Then there's Nathan's girlfriend, Shari, who juggles her studies and job. Shari's employer sells the café where she works, and on her second day with the new management, she is let go. On her way home, Shari gets into an accident, and the woman she collides with decides to sue her. One day, Shari and Nathan seem to have it all, living life at its peak, and the next day, their lives are thrown into chaos.

Some plot twists were easy for me to figure out quickly, while others completely caught me off guard. CRASHERS stands out as one of the best stories I've encountered in quite some time. If CRASHERS is any indication of her writing, I am eager to explore more works by Lindy S. Hudis. I intend to delve into her other stories in the near future.

I found CRASHERS incredibly enjoyable, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to all fans of crime thrillers! Be sure to grab a copy of CRASHERS today!

My Review:

When we last encountered Mae, she had just reunited with Bear and Laurel, but the happiness was fleeting as Mae felt remorse for abandoning her unit. As soon as she got the chance, Mae departed from the Freeman and returned to her unit, bringing along all the intelligence she had collected about them. She hoped that this information would earn her captain's trust.

Bear and Trent have been captured by the Army/militia, and Mae is following along with them. I am optimistic that she is merely waiting for the right moment to secure their release.

In the meantime, Laurel remains oblivious to the situation, but for now, she must remain with the Freeman, assisting the injured. Once she ensures everyone is taken care of, she will do everything in her power to save Bear, Trent, and hopefully Mae, too.

Collapsed World, like the other novels in the EMP Aftermath series, has kept me eagerly anticipating what would unfold next. It is a gripping read that keeps the pages turning without a single dull moment.

The world-building is among the finest I have ever encountered. The descriptions are equally impressive. I am eager to delve deeper into this incredible, enchanting world. I adore everything about it and find myself craving more.

I am excited to jump into the sixth and final installment in this collection, Lawless World, to discover where everyone's journey leads next and how it all concludes. Not that I want it to end; I wish it could continue endlessly.

I cherish nearly all the characters, though I must admit that even the antagonists play their essential roles effectively, and they excel in their functions.

I wholeheartedly recommend picking up a copy of Collapsed World for another thrilling adventure in a dystopian setting!

Caffeine and a Corpse

A Poppy James Cozy Mystery

by Gemma Harper

Published: July 14, 2025

Genre: Cozy Mystery, Cozy Animal Mystery, Mystery, Thriller, Suspense, Short Reads

Blurb:

Murder’s brewing in Willowbrook—and it’s not just the coffee.

Poppy James expected the annual Book Festival to bring jam-sticky toddlers, coffee-fueled chaos, and a scone shortage—not a frantic librarian, a mysterious locket, and a body in the garden. As the eagle-eyed owner of Perk & Page, she tries to stay out of the gossip—until curiosity (and caffeine) pull her in.

Luckily, Poppy isn’t sleuthing alone. Nadine, her delightfully gossipy best friend, provides the sass and spectacle, while Midsip, her beagle sidekick, digs up clues—literally. Together, they follow a trail from cryptic notes and coded recipes to secret passages and a stash of suspicious ledgers.

As tensions rise, suspects emerge: a brooding author with secrets and a nervous mayor with everything to lose. But when warnings turn personal and a locked door becomes a trap, Poppy realizes she's in deeper than she ever planned.

Because if she doesn’t solve the mystery soon, Willowbrook’s cozy charm might turn deadly—and she could be the next name whispered over coffee.

An excellent way to get started with the Poppy James Cozy Mystery series is with Caffeine and a Corpse. You will almost instantly fall in love with the wonderful cast of characters it presents.

Poppy's beagle sidekick, Midsip, and her delightfully gossipy best friend, Nadine, are also introduced. Both of them assist Poppy in solving mysteries.

EXCERPT:

“There’s something else you should know before you leave.”

Something in the chief’s tone made Shawn sink back into his chair. “Sir?”

“The new captain is a woman,” Washington said carefully, clearly bracing for resistance. “Rebecca Schwartz from the Charlotte Fire Department. Goes by Becks, according to her application. She’ll be arriving Thursday next week for an informal meet-and-greet at Mr. Jones & Husband, then coming by on Saturday to meet the volunteers during training before officially starting on Monday.”

Shawn nodded, unfazed by the gender revelation. “A female captain? That’s fine by—“

But the words died in his throat as the full name registered. The folder slipped from his suddenly numb fingers, papers spilling across the floor. Rebecca Schwartz. The name echoed in his head like the aftershock of an explosion.

“Rebecca Schwartz?” he repeated, his voice sounding distant to his own ears.

Washington’s eyebrows rose slightly at Shawn’s reaction. “You know her?”

Know her? Shawn almost laughed at the absurdity of the question. He’d known her as Becca back then—sweet-faced but determined Becca with her infectious laugh and fierce ambition. He’d known the curve of her smile and the scent of her skin. Known her dreams and fears. Known the sound of her voice first thing in the morning and the last thing at night.

Until he hadn’t.

“We trained together,” he said finally, the understatement of the decade. “At the North Carolina Fire Academy. When I knew her, she went by Becca, not Becks.”

Washington frowned, clearly surprised by this information. “I didn’t connect the dots when reviewing your files.” He leaned forward, suddenly concerned. “Is this going to be a problem?”

Shawn bent to gather the scattered papers, grateful for the chance to hide his expression. Memories he’d buried years ago resurfaced in vivid detail—Becca’s fierce determination during training exercises, her infectious laugh during rare moments of downtime, the devastating fury in her eyes the last time they’d spoken.

“I never want to see your face again, Miller. Keep six feet away from me for the rest of our lives.”

He straightened, clutching the reassembled folder, his knuckles white against the manila paper. “No, sir. No problem at all.”

Teaser: Thor by Anne Kane @AnneKane @RABTBookTours @changelingpress

Riptide MC, Book 4

Motorcycle Club Romance, Age Gap, Suspense

Date Published: September 5, 2025

Janet -- Thor is an addiction I can’t seem to overcome. He’s everything I’ve ever wanted in a man, and everything I can never have. They call him Thor for a reason -- he looks like a modern-day Viking with that shaggy blond hair, piercing blue eyes, and ropes of muscles covered in intricate tattoos. And in bed the man is definitely a god who grants my every secret desire. I walked away from the marriage my parents tried to force me into, but I’m not naive enough to think they’re going to let me go. They have money. Power. Influence. They know how to bend people to their will. They will make sure I marry someone they approve of, and it doesn’t take a genius to figure out they will never approve of Thor.

Thor -- Janet is mine. I know she knows it, too. I can see it in her eyes, hear it in her voice, feel it every time we make love. But she refuses to wear my cut and freaks out if I mention anything permanent. I have no idea what the fuck her issue is, but it doesn’t matter. I want her, and I’m going to have her if it takes me the rest of my fucking life to convince her. I want her to come to me willingly. I love her enough not to force her.

Now I just have to stay alive long enough for that to happen, because someone wants me dead.

EXCERPT

Thor

Fuck, that woman frustrated the hell out of me! I knew there had to be a reason she balked at making our relationship public, but she just kept evading the issue. I was a hair’s breadth away from having Shadow snoop into her and see what was up. I knew that would cross a line, but I wasn’t sure it was one I cared about. Did she have an ex she didn’t want me to know about? Or one that still had a legal claim on her? Because I could fix that without breaking a sweat.

She didn’t act like someone running from an ex though. It had a different feel to it, and that’s what scared me. More like she didn’t want people to know about me because they thought she could do better. Admittedly, she probably could but that was just too bad. I had her now, and I had no intention of letting her go.

“Cassie, huh?” I looked at Joker.

He shrugged. “Like I said, we met at the tattoo parlor. She was getting a dragonfly on the back of her shoulder. Said it was in honor of her grandmother who’d had a thing for them.”

“And?”

“And we got to talking. You know. Families. Life. Shit like that. Ended up at the steakhouse for dinner, and I invited her to come watch the races with me today.”

I nodded. “So not a long-standing secret affair you’ve kept from the club all this time?”

He smirked. “You mean like you and Janet? Nah. At least not yet. I haven’t told her about Riptide.”

I sighed. Everyone except Janet seemed to be aware of our status.

A ruckus over at the far side of the room caught my attention. Two burly guys were half leading, half dragging a woman toward the back exit, and she was not going willingly. Squirming and letting out muffled screams through the hand one of them had over her mouth.

“Fuck. Looks like she needs a hand. I’ll be back in a minute.”

“Need me for backup?”

The two were nearly at the door, one swearing loudly as the woman stomped on his foot. “Two against one? I think I can handle it. Keep Janet amused for me.”

Joker laughed. “No problem. I’ll tell her about the time you thought the monkey crying in the jungle was a kid and just about got yourself killed going to rescue it.”

“Asshole.” I stood and shouldered my way across the floor to the trio. By the time I reached them, they’d manhandled the girl outside and the door was closing behind them.

“Not so fast, guys.” I pushed the door open and stepped outside, ready for a little exercise. I hadn’t been in a decent fight in weeks.

As the door snapped shut behind me, I saw the girl standing alone on the far side of the alley. In the second that it took for my brain to register that, a fist slammed into the side of my head.

Ambush!

Fuck!

Not my first one though, and I ducked low, twisting to the left as a second blow glanced off my shoulder. I brought my fists up to protect my head, and aimed a roundhouse kick at my assailant, connecting with a satisfyingly meaty thud that drove him backward.

The second guy was quick, and he had a knife. Holding it low, he slashed upward.

I jumped back, and the blade traced a shallow path across my abs.

He bared his teeth and came at me again.

I kicked low, hitting his knee and causing him to stumble. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the girl turn and run, waving to my attackers as she headed out of the alley.

Fucking slut wasn’t waiting around to see the outcome.

The first guy came in from the side, pummeling me with his fists. I ducked to the side, getting my back against the wall so they couldn’t come at me from behind.

Still, two against one, with one of the two brandishing a knife.

Didn’t look good, but I wasn’t going out without a fight. Fuck that. Vikings had coined the term berserker, and they didn’t call me Thor for nothing.

Letting out a furious battle cry, I threw myself at the knife-wielding thug. I got in a few good shots with my fists before a searing pain lanced through me. A quick glance down showed a crimson gash open up on my side.

Ignoring the pain, I grasped his wrist, the one holding the deadly blade, and twisted. The knife arched back, and wussy let out a scream of agony as it bit into his flesh. He dropped to his knees, and I turned to protect myself from his buddy.

The next few minutes stretched out like a slow-motion movie. At this point in my life, hand to hand combat was second nature.

Attack.

Defend.

Kick.

Twist out of reach.

Punch.

Duck under the next blow.

I could do this on autopilot, like a choreographed dance. If not for the wound at my side, I would have made mincemeat out of this clown in minutes.

I was holding my own, but I could feel my strength waning as a crimson trail of blood dripped from the knife wound. Not as shallow as I’d first thought.

My breathing was labored. My hits had less strength behind them. The pain was getting harder to ignore. I wasn’t going to last much longer but damned if I wasn’t going to take this asshole down with me.

Just as the thug came at me yet again, baring his teeth behind a split and swollen lip, the door slammed open, and Joker entered the fray. He might be a medic, dedicated to healing but that didn’t mean he couldn’t fight. Faced with a fresh opponent, and his sidekick lying motionless on the concrete, the coward turned tail and ran.

“What the hell, man?” Joker took a few steps after the asshole to make sure he was gone, then turned back to me. He grabbed my arm, gently lowering me to the ground. “Where’s the girl?”

“Ambush.” I grasped my injured side, wincing. “She bailed somewhere between the first punch and the knife.”

Joker eyed up the assailant lying motionless on the ground. “You had a knife on you?”

I shook my head. “Nah. He brought it. I just turned it back on him.”

Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance, Sports

I’m pretending to be his stable girlfriend while he plays my successful boyfriend. But now faking feels a lot like falling.

Bailey
I’m a walking contradiction—professional on the job, a hot mess at home, and working my “I’ve got this” smile until my cheeks ache while hiding my hobbies: making maple butter and finding a husband. With my perfect sister’s recent engagement, I’m desperate to avoid Mom’s pitying looks and matchmaking attempts.

Carson
I used to be hockey’s laid-back southern charmer until a crushing rejection from my high school sweetheart transformed me into a workaholic. When I’m unexpectedly traded to a new team, rumors circulate about whether the gentleman wingman lost his edge. I’ll do whatever it takes to prove them wrong.

Bailey
When our worlds collide after a dessert disaster, we come up with a mutually beneficial solution to our respective woes: a fake relationship. The rules are simple: I get a “successful” boyfriend for family events. He gets a “stable” girlfriend for team image. No feelings, no complications, and a definite expiration date.

Carson
But between posing as a couple at the fall festival, midnight maple butter-making sessions, trying to keep our stories straight, and undeniable chemistry, what started as a convenient lie is beginning to feel inconveniently real. EXCERPT:

“In one simple move—” Waving his hand across the links of the cuffs, my pulse skips and then plummets.

Nothing happens.

A consummate professional, he declares, “That was to show that no ordinary person has the ability to free these people from their bonds. No, it takes a special flick of the—” He motions again, and I expect the handcuffs to drop from our wrists, but they remain fixed, locked.

His smile wavers. My expression morphs into a scowl. Bailey grins as if this is all part of the act and she’s expecting the handcuffs to vanish like the coin from the box.

I know better … or at least, my stomach thinks it does.

The magician tries one more time, but we remain locked together.

“Ah, yes. I must’ve, um, we’ll just take a moment in my stall to—” Turning his back on the crowd, he ushers us inside and then closes the black curtain at our backs.

“Get these off, now,” I say, forgoing my manners and the word sir.

Bailey adds, “Please.”

Sweat dots his forehead. “I don’t know what went wrong. Yes, of course. Let me just find the key. It’s here—” He rifles through a little drawer in a wooden chest.

I glance at Bailey and her shoulders droop slightly. She mouths, I’m sorry.

No, it’s this clown show of a magician who should be sorry.

“Ah ha!” He says, pinching a small key between his fingers.

“Hurry up. We have a wedding to go to.” I belatedly realize I included myself when in reality I’m dropping Bailey off and then going, well, I’m not sure where. She must, though, having arranged my moving plans.

The magician slides the key into the lock, but again, nothing happens. Wrenching it from his fingers, I say, “Let me try.”

They’re chasing the truth straight into each other’s arms.

When CIA agent Angie Liu disobeys orders by looking into the mysterious death of an informant, her investigation leads her to Jamaica. To get out of the U.S. undetected, she must turn to the last man she wants to ask for help–the sexy, one-night stand she ran out on who just happens to be her dead informant’s son.

Nate Hughes wrote his father off as a drug smuggler. But after his dad’s possible murder reveals another side of the story, Nate will stop at nothing to get answers. And when the beautiful woman who bolted from his hotel room shows up at his family airline in need of an unofficial ride to the Caribbean, he’s not about to let her out of his sight.

Angie doesn’t want to fall for the handsome-but-gruff son of a former asset, and Nate wants nothing to do with the organization that may have set his dad up to be murdered. But neither is prepared for the feelings that surface–or how much they’ll need the other to stay alive.
