Lily Grimes had it all. She was head cheerleader, the girlfriend of the All-American High School Quarterback, had been accepted to a prestige college near her hometown and the best family and friends a young woman could ask for. Just before Christmas 2004, Dr. Jethro “Jet” Manning, the doctor-in-training for the quaint little town, nearly runs over Lily, who is found unresponsive and icy cold in the middle of a backroad.

Fast forward to 2015 - Lily Grimes finally wakes up and has to face the reality of being in a coma for the past 11 years. Her life has changed but just as she feels like she is getting into the groove of things, Lily discovers secrets have been kept, lies have been told and everyone whom she considered a ‘friend’, may not be out for her best interest.
Lily feels like something is missing - a piece of herself. Is it simply because she was in a coma for so long or is there literally a piece missing? As she sets out on a mission to find the answer, Lily discovers that she’s being stalked and someone is trying to kill her.

Who can she trust and will she ever find the secret to those eleven missing years?

Excerpt:

“Well, I think she deserves to know,” insisted Caroline, “She’s going to have a harder time accepting it if she discovers it on her own.” Dr. Manning sighed and looked at the set of desperate parents. “Caroline, please dear, she just woke up. Being out of it for eleven years is a big enough issue to face,” said Jake as he wrapped his arm around Caroline’s waist. “Y’all just don’t know the ways it affects a woman - physically, mentally and emotionally,” said Caroline, crossing her arms. Jethro ran a hand through his hair and rubbed the scruff on his chin before he finally said, “As her physician, I think it’s best if we take revealing news to her slowly. Too much could send her into shock again and that wreaks havoc on all of her organs.”

“I agree,” said Jake. Caroline tapped her foot, rolled her eyes and through gritted teeth, said, “Fine….”. She was a woman who did not like not getting her way. “For now, we will give her a few days and revisit where she’s at. I’m going to talk to Dr. Marsden about a therapy plan for when she’s released,” said Dr. Manning. Caroline narrowed her eyes at the two men to make her unhappiness clear but finally gave in to a smile when she looked through the crack of her daughter’s room and saw life in her body. She vowed that she’d protect her baby girl - at any cost!

A few minutes later, her parents departed Dr. Manning and he scurried off down the hall. Lily realized, for the first time that day, she was completely alone. She thought about turning on the TV but thought it might be a bit much so instead, she turned on her side and stared at the calendar. 2015, she thought. That would make me 29! Oh my goodness!! I’m old! Her thoughts were interrupted by a little boy running through the hallway and screaming, “Mommy is coming home” at the top of his lungs. She smiled and felt the excitement from the day catch up to her so Lily closed her eyes and slept.

My Review:

A young woman wakes up in a hospital room and her mom is there and she is so happy to see that Lily is awake but something seems off not quite right and then Lily rolls over and sees a calendar with the year 2015 on it. Lily does a double take and ask everyone what is with the calendar? Her mom then proceeds to tell her that she has been in a coma for 11 years.

Lily is upset that she has missed 11 years of her life and she knows that her mom, dad and everyone else is keeping secrets from her about the night she went into a coma.

When Lily is finally released from the hospital she is determined to get on with her life and put the past behind her. It’s not long before she figures out someone is following her but she doesn’t say anything to anyone and puts it off on her imagination.

Someone is out to get Lily they want to make sure whatever happened all those years ago on the night Lily went into a coma stays a secret and they also want to finish what they started 11 years ago.

After Lily finds out that her family and friends are keeping secrets from her she is determined to find out what those secrets are and also to find out who is after her and what they want with her? What happened to Lily on that long ago night? Is Lily safe? Will she ever be able to put that night behind her? To find out all the answers and find out what happened to Lily pick up your copy of A Chilling Absence today.

A Chilling Absence has been an amazing read. Although it is not my favorite genre I do love a good mystery and am so glad I finally read it. Now I don’t know why I waited so long. A Chilling Absence is a short read one that you can read in a few hours it felt as if it was a lot longer with all the twist and turns of a long story. It gives you the right amount of detail and background of each character and their stories right when you need it. The ending was so amazing not what I was expecting at all. I really enjoyed Lily’s story and loved following along with her on her journey to a new life.

AUTHOR BIO:

July 15, 1984. Shelly Oakley (now Maynard) was born and lived in tiny Ashmore, Illinois until 1998 when her parents relocated to Manchester, Tennessee. Starting a new high school and making new friends was hard enough but it was that point in her life where it came time to make life-changing decisions in regards to college, careers, etc. Shelly had spent so much time following in others’ footsteps that she never had a plan for her career. The only dream she’d ever had was to become an author but that was laughed off by family and friends. By 2002, Shelly was in college and switched her major from nursing to teaching and finally business. One year in and she discovered that she was pregnant with her first son. He joined the world in 2004 and was followed by a brother in 2006. During the second pregnancy, Shelly fought demons of a bad marriage and started trying to rebuild her life. She met her (now) husband in the Fall of 2006 and they’ve been inseparable ever since. Her three guys are her entire heart, soul, mind and spirit! After searching for several years, Shelly decided that it was time to find a place to settle in her career. She started working for a local, family-owned steel fabrication company in 2014 and was surprised when she found more than a job – she gained an extended family and friends who provided a tremendous amount of support. Between the support of her husband, children, family and friends, Shelly started writing again. In 2015, Shelly stumbled upon the opportunity to read Eternal Dawn by Kathi Haacke Morehead. The book reached down in her soul and opened her eyes to view the world as she never had before. The writing bug flourished and Shelly knew it was time to pursue her dreams. Past demons haunted her but she wanted to set an example for her children and follow her dream through to the end to prove that hard work, persistence and dedication pays off! Living in Lynchburg, Tennessee, Shelly Maynard is your typical mom – she enjoys spending time with her family, friends and for nine of the twelve months per year, you’ll find her at a ball field watching her children. She enjoys front-porch-sittin’ with a glass of sweet tea and the occasional margarita. She loves her morning coffee, a good book and writing for her blog. It’s the simple, “little” things in life that make life grand!

There is trouble in Valdosta, Georgia. And a whole lot of it.

Abram, a methodical 23 year-old, previously homeless, hopeless romantic, has a fierce devotion to his rendezvous with love, which is seemingly not on his schedule of life. Jec, an unassuming 19 year-old feminist and natural optimist, entertains her current relationship and search for a forever kind of love that is threatened by both, what her co-workers see in Abram that she refuses to believe, as well as what she does not see: Abram’s last seventeen minutes in jail before they met.

Everything around her tells her that her obsession with dragging out what Abram offers in their courtship will end in turmoil, but something about him keeps her coming back for more, leading her to a series of exchanged love letters that do not quite make sense, at least to everyone else. Just what makes sense for her is something hidden in her past, which nobody else may ever discover as far as she is concerned. Her stubborn focus leaves no room for distractions from the masses, and she does not want to hear it.

On the other hand, Abram has a secret he is adamant about keeping that way. He enrolls into college and moves into the apartments that Jec is employed by with his refund check to get off of the streets, catching a glance from the beautiful receptionist that would present an opportunity he had not seen before. Little did he know, his transition from his tent in the forest would be one from jail to his first room in almost two years. The jail cell talk without any cameras around to record make his last seventeen minutes in the pen with a sketchy bunkmate a do or die conversation that may explain why he became homeless, why he wrote the love letters in the first place, and if both were random at all.

Briefly mild erotica at maximum. Few brief sexual innuendos.

Chapter 9

The same day in August, 2015

I think, for the price of a pizza, the experience of the novel is priceless.

A literary ecstasy, this was not a book I wanted to lend. I had to have it.

My co-worker interjects my thoughts, “Is that lighter fluid? What is he burning out there in our fire pit? I’m telling you Jec, that dude killed somebody. You haven’t seen him around as long as I have. The way he’s always scrunching his face, looking like a stone cold killer with all that stinking thinking. Some people struggle with who they really are. And when it goes foul, you know they don’t always catch these people.”

He picks up and holds out the book I am reading titled Wait For You, and says, “Some novels you have to read twice to really see all the beauty in the nuances, but these plots don’t always end beautifully Jec. You should start reading more of them.”

I take a bite out of an apple and stop scratching my thumb across a squiggled smear on my permanent marker to look out the window as I reply to my front desk co-receptionist, “Bobby, you’re being ridiculous. It just looked like he pulled some papers from a box and threw them into the pit. Hey, where’d he go?”

Bobby answers quickly, “No really, have you seen him using his hands on the street? He’s probably practicing some lethal judo that nobody knows right now. Hi-yah!—”

      Ding-Ding.

At the sound of the front door bell I tried to smother my giggle in professionalism, but I no longer found it necessary to suppress as the blurry silhouette of the person entering the front door became clear and my laughter came to a sudden halt.

It is the guy from the fire pit of whom Bobby was just joking about that is now approaching the front desk where I sit, and my heart rate begins to decrease as I feel the baritone boomp-boomp in my chest getting slower. But I cannot not look away, for he looks as if he got ran over by a train this morning from this closer view and I am not sure what is about to happen next.

I think, have we not already asked what of vanity is so serious? Or is our ultra-modern scientific understanding unresponsive to the inward call of good will? Does it need a new face?

But there is something underneath the wreckage that is dark, and handsome. I’ve got a secret thing for bad boys, and this one looks like just the right amount of danger.

I inhale a deep slow breath of air just before he begins to speak.

“May I ask for the keys of the apartment I am renting please? Here is my check. My name is Abram Wedger and I am two weeks late from my move-in date.”

I let out a long slow breath.

He is gazing directly into my eyes and for a brief moment I felt I knew.

“Of course” I tell him, and then proceed to retrieve the keys to his apartment in the file cabinet. As I turn in my chair, I clumsily knock the pen holder onto the floor, scattering a few pens and pencils. I blush, then kneel to the floor, placing a knee on the ground as I pick up the utensils that are nearer to my front foot. I hastily return the pen holder to the counter trying to save face before walking to the back office and realizing one of my earrings fell out of my ear.

      What is wrong with me?

When I return, he is still standing in the exact same spot, facing in the exact same direction, as if stoic in time, space, and emotion. I swiftly pick my earring up off the floor, and place it into my ear lobe.

As I go to hand him his key and re-washable cup, I remind him that “the lobby coffee is free”, and he glances at my name tag.

I lazily connect my last sentence with the next, saying “Jec, for short”.

He pauses, then shakes his head and asks “What if I want to call you something different?”

I meet his eyes with a stare of my own, slow to respond, blink, and say “It will be okay Abram.” His face scrunches for a moment and his eyes look as though he is wondering straight through me. My glance falls deeper into the hole of an eye, and I see a marble in the night, the dark side of a full moon, which can be plucked right out of the sky to place a piece of the void heaven filled should I grab it and tuck it into my pocket.

The ascension falling as the walls collapse to drop a cloud in his ear, a long fiber weaves my wonder, wherefore out there did he discover?

And I conceived a thought of a single droplet, enough months from now, falling into a gravitationally absent drip time has lost, and him not.

Before I can tell if he eased his facial expression, he walks off keys in hand without another word.

“See, I told you. Killer” Bobby says flatly, and I just return to checking my emails.

EXCERPT:

“But you didn’t even try,” Phelan screamed. His fist clenched at his side in rage as he threw out his accusations. “You would rather coddle your damn vampire than stand behind the needs of your own people.”
Confusion and concern creased Rupert’s brow. This was unlike his friend. Phelan liked Darien. He had also understood Rupert’s position in the past. It was bizarre he would take such a stance now. “Phelan?” Rupert asked as he reached out to touch his friend’s shoulder.
As the hand made contact, Phelan shrieked in rage and slung his fist into Rupert’s face, staggering the man back. Red colored Phelan’s vision as he tore out of his coat and leaped at his alpha. His mind spun with hate and rage, driving all thought out of his head. The smell of blood on Rupert’s split lip made Phelan’s blood boil. His wolf ripped through his skin, shredding his shirt.
Staggering away from his attacking friend, Rupert threw his arm up just in time to stop the sharp teeth from reaching the delicate skin of his throat. Shocked by the sudden attack, he yelled out as he fell backwards under the weight of the wolf. He lay on the ground, stunned by the sudden violence, as Phelan mauled the sleeve of his jacket. The outburst was unlike anything Rupert had ever seen from his second. The unprovoked attack reminded him of the problems they were having with the pack, and sorrow filled his heart as he gathered his thoughts enough to start fighting back. It wasn’t fear of death or injury that pained Rupert, it was the dread of having to hurt or kill one of his closest friends.

Up until Claire’s arrival on the island, he had never thought himself capable, or deserving, but perhaps this was his chance to finally do the right thing.

Excerpt:

I dug my feet into the carpet. If I was to choose the path that surrendered me to this island, it would not be without a fight.

Tucker saw the defiance in my face, the change in my stance.

“Don’t do this, Claire.” He came closer. I didn’t respond. “Please, it’s just a few tests.” He was inches away. His voice was low. He shifted his eyes from me to the door.

I felt the betrayal I had on the beach, when I realized he was stopping me, keeping me here, like Bell.

He must have seen my skepticism. His expression twisted into hurt.

“I’m not your enemy, Claire.”

I braced myself for flight, poised like a cat ready to pounce. My knees bent slightly. I rotated to the balls of my feet for more sprint speed.

“Claire.” His voice was a warning.

I sprung. Toward the back of the house, where there were less guards.

He bolted after me. I was a tenth of a second faster than him. He made it to the door of the bedroom, just as I was closing it, his hands hit the door. I locked the knob. His fists slammed into the wood.

“Claire, don’t do this. Please, you don’t know him like I do.” He was talking about Bell. A painful burn filled my stomach. He was right. I didn’t know him like he did, which only reminded me he was the adversary. He was a part of the assemblage I was fighting against. He was who I was running from.

I pushed the window open, pushed the screen, and climbed out. My feet landed in the soft grass. I paused, looking in each direction.

The guards were at the front door, expecting me to emerge from the house with Tucker. Tucker’s pounding on the door would only give me seconds before they realized what I had done.

My knees bent and flung me forward. I ran toward the fence. If the barbed wired didn’t slice me to pieces, the tower guard would surely shoot me, but so be it.

I ran hard. My heart rate pounded in my ears like music, a rhythmic, steady, swift beat.

My hands landed on the fence, it clattered and sung from the impact. One foot lifted and fit snugly in one of the rungs of the fencing. My other foot lifted and almost made it into its place before strong hands flung me from my place. The hands hurled me to the ground. I thumped against the hard ground. I felt the air leave my lungs. Each breath was like sucking through a straw.

One of the guards was standing over me. He put one foot on each side of me and crouched down. He wrapped his hand around my throat. I closed my eyes. This was it, the moment I had prayed for since I had been snatched into that van. Surely he would kill me.

His shaggy, sandy-blond hair covered his eyes, and a deep tan highlighted his sharp cheekbones. He had a baby face; hell, compared to me he was a baby. Still, that silky-smooth face called out to be kissed without mercy.

I wanted to be the one to do just that.

He pushed the hair out of his eyes. The chocolate-brown pools that hid underneath were visible for a brief moment before gravity won the battle, and his hair fell right back to where it had started.

His constant battle with his hair was one of those things I had always adored about him. Every time he ran his hands through his hair, I couldn’t help the twinge of jealousy I felt. I wanted to be the one to unearth those eyes that matched the shade of my morning coffee.

I was pretty sure Blake didn’t know anything about my feelings for him, and that was for the best. For the sake of both our jobs, I kept my emotions in check, burying those feelings as deep as I possibly could. The last thing I wanted to do was have my way with him and then have things go south. They always went south for me—and then I’d be stuck having awkward encounters with him every day, or even worse, he’d leave, and I’d have to get used to a new delivery driver. Neither situation was appealing, so I did what I had to do to maintain the status quo. I even kept my thoughts about him secret from my best friend, Lydia, the manager of Parts and More. I already knew my obsession with her employee was taboo; I didn’t need to give her the chance to mock me for it, too.

Randi has spent her entire life writing in one form or another. In fact, if she wasn't writing, she'd likely go completely and utterly insane. Her husband has learned to recognize when the voices are talking in her head and she needs some quality time with an empty Word file (the key to a successful marriage with a writer).

She lives with her husband, daughter, and four-legged children—all of which think they are people too.

A pop culture junkie, she has been known to have entire conversations in movie quotes and/or song lyrics.
