Book Tour: CONSUMED by Elizabeth Miceli @xoMissLizzi @SwoonRomance

About the Book:

Stacey Lorenzo has finished treatment, but is still devastated by her past as she enters college. With drugs and alcohol so readily available, so much freedom, and barely any supervision, Stacey falls back into old habits. Soon it’s a daily dose of partying, self-medicating, and having sex with lots of different guys. As her relationship with Eli destructs, she falls for Jesse, who just so happens to be a drug dealer. Every time she starts to fall back into the memories of her past, Jesse makes it easy to snort away the pain.

But she snorts too much one night; it forces her to question the man she loves and acknowledge her mental and emotional  instability. In the second installment of The Barren Series, Stacey must overcome her addiction and make peace with her past if she is ever to be truly happy again.

Excerpt:

“Why don’t you repeat after me?” she asked, and then started. “I am a recovering addict.”

My eyes started to tear as I opened my mouth. “I’m a recovering addict.”

Carol didn’t waver as my voice quavered, betraying me. She just continued. “I’m smart,” I repeated it after her.

       “I’m talented,” she continued.

       “I’m talented.”

And then she said the affirmation that made me shake. An affirmation that felt all too much like a lie. “I’m special. I’m beautiful. I’m not perfect but I will be happy.”

I slowed down, wiping the tears away from my eyes. And I said the words as slowly as I could. Trying to believe them.

      “I’m special?”

       Carol nodded. “You are.”

“I’m beautiful?” The statements were coming out like questions. I wasn’t sure if I really was these things that Carol was having me repeat.

“I’m not perfect,” I sighed, making the affirmation my own. “But, I’m on the road to happiness.”

Carol put her arms around me and I sank into her embrace. I may not have been perfect, and I may not have felt beautiful- but I was trying. Trying to recover. Trying to be happy. Trying to live.

Author Interview:

What inspired you to write CONSUMED?

When I was in high school, I had a boyfriend who was an addict. It was terrifying, scary, and frustrating all at the same time. Following that relationship, I had drug abuse on the brain. I knew that I needed to write a book about relationships, why people use drugs, and recovery. I wanted to continue Stacey’s story and drug abuse was a great way to do that considering her already questionable drug habits.

When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

I never sat down one day and decided to be a writer. BARREN just kind of poured out of me and so did CONSUMED. It still amazes me that I am an author!

What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

I remember reading with my mother at bedtime when I was five or so.

What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

I love erotica and romance. Give me a love story and I’m a happy girl.

What is your favorite book?

Twilight by Stephanie Meyer.

You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

My favorite author is Nora Roberts because her novels always keep me hooked. Her characters always feel so alive and so real.

If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

I would go to Woodstock so I could hear amazing music and be enmeshed in the “hippy” culture.

When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

I go through phases. I either write a hell of a lot or literally nothing at all for months. There is no in between for me. When I’m in my writing zone, I can bang out 10 chapters in one sitting and it feels as easy as breathing. Other times, I can’t even put one word down on the page. I call it writing bipolar. My moods are all over the place.

Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

I don’t. I wish I did. I keep dropping hints to my boyfriend about getting me a lab or a golden retriever puppy. We’ll see!

What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?

Pizza, ice cream, cookies, and basically anything with carbs in it!

Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Don’t give up. Do not let anyone tell you that you can’t be a writer. People are going to tell you that your book sucks, they’re going to tell you that you’re not good enough, and they’re definitely going to tell you that you’re a horrible editor. If there criticism is grounded in reality, listen to it. But don’t let their criticism bother you. Just fix what needs fixing and move forward. It may seem like you’re never going to get published but I promise you, it will work out. You will achieve your dream.

EXCERPT:

I’m waiting for the elevator, wondering if I should ask the front desk for tips about restaurants or just find a place on my own. Then the doors open to reveal someone standing inside.
My lips part in surprise. Connor does a double take, then gives me a slow, slow smile.
Umm…. okay. This is a whole new ballgame now.
“We meet again,” he says, still smiling. My estrogen starts flowing at the sight of that smile and those eyes. I couldn’t stop it now if I tried.
“Hello again,” I say as I step into the elevator. He looks—and smells—freshly bathed as well and I have a sudden vision of him naked in a tub. God. Between that and the fact that there’s apparently no escaping this guy, I completely forget why I was trying to escape him to start with.

The doors slide closed with a soft thud and the little space grows even smaller. I don’t stand too close, but I certainly would’ve stood farther away if I’d never met him before. The car begins its downward journey and my stomach swoops more than usual.
We start giving each other that wondering look from before. He’s still smiling, and there’s a smile teasing the corners of my mouth too. In spite of being freshly bathed, he didn’t shave. He still has that cute scruff on his jaw.
“You’re staying here, too?” I ask.
He turns toward me a bit and leans one shoulder against the back wall. Oh man. Just like when he turned toward me at the table, this little movement makes things feel more familiar. But this time it’s just us. In this little box. I like it. “I heard this is the best place for the weary Camino pilgrim,” he says.
I adjust slightly so I can lean against the wall as well. I really can’t help it. Because it seems like this is the moment we’ve been building to all along. “That’s what the guidebooks say anyway.”
“Do they?”
“Don’t you have a guidebook?” The car already starts to slow, dammit. I don’t want to walk away this time. I want to linger awhile.
“I’m not the guidebook type,” he answers, as we come to a stop. “I’d rather just ask around. But I think we have more important matters to discuss.”
The elevator dings and the doors open. Neither one of us moves. My heart is thumping in anticipation. “Do we?”
“Yes. You’re about to go your way and I’m about to go mine, but clearly the universe thinks we need to talk some more.”
Thump, thump, thump. Now it’s my turn to give a slow smile. “The universe, huh?”
“Okay,” he says, grinning. “it’s me. I think we should talk more.”

Lady of the Imperial City
Published: May 2015
Historical Romance

Love isn’t forbidden to Lady Kirei as long as it’s with a proper gentleman of Kyō and she doesn’t mind sharing him with his wife. Her provincial upbringing makes her socially unacceptable as a true wife, yet as a lady by birth and a court favorite, her position makes it impossible for her to seek a match below her station. She’s trapped.

When a nobleman of similar provincial upbringing arrives in town and becomes an instant favorite of the emperor, he is sent to Lady Kirei for tutoring on city ways. Lord Yūkan is smitten, but she’s not a conquest to be won. She’s a woman of substance and worth, and she’s off limits.

Despite his unrefined manners, Lord Yūkan’s aristocratic bloodline shows through his fine taste and quick mind. It doesn’t hurt that he’s handsome, too. As he begins to touch her heart, Lady Kirei is ever mindful that they can’t commit, especially when her uncle schemes to make her a consort to a prince.

Will her family’s honor relegate her to the shadow-life of a consort, or can love find a way?

VBT + #Giveaway: Victoria at Sea by M. Kate Quinn @mkatequinn @GoddessFish

Victoria at Sea
by M. Kate Quinn
GENRE: Contemporary Romance

BLURB:

Why has no place in what the heart knows for sure.

On the eve of their wedding Victoria Gliden and fiancé Owen Walker call it quits. He accuses her of not being able to get over her deadbeat father’s vanishing act when she was a child and she and her cold feet run and don’t look back.

An interior designer, Victoria, has an important meeting on Cancun that could garner her a promotion and the plan was to incorporate her presentation with the honeymoon cruise that’s journeying to the island. Since she’s sure Owen is on his way to Portland to escape the aftermath of their ruined wedding, Victoria takes the honeymoon cruise anyway. Only Owen has the same idea and they’re stuck with each other for six days, five nights.

Tony Gliden, Victoria’s father, dies in a freak accident and is sent back to earth disguised as a crotchety old man with the mission to convince his daughter to believe in love. So, he, too boards the ship.

At sea, destiny takes a detour when Victoria befriends the quirky old man with kind eyes and together they join forces with a quartet of unabashed women in their fifties who drink pink martinis and flirt with the wait staff but are wiser than they look. While trying to dodge Owen, Victoria’s new acquaintances help her face old wounds and confront new fears.

Most of all, Victoria and Owen both realize it all boils down to one word—why?

By journey’s end will two broken hearts get their answer?

Excerpt:

Two figures, a scrawny-assed man and a brittle-looking woman, sat opposite him at a sleek table, the surface a slab of marble. “Who the hell are you?” Tony’s voice pinged foreign to his ears, distant, echoic.

The man’s lanky arms were knobby like twigs, attached to narrow shoulders, but he sat with the authority of a doctor, his pale hands tented on the marble. His face, sunken-eyed, was somber like he was about to lower the boom to a patient. Tony pushed himself forward and stared the guy down.

“Buddy, uh, care to answer me?”

When no response came from the guy, Tony pulled his eyes over to the woman. Her gray hair was long and silky. Young hair. The healthy mane looked odd on a broad who obviously had a few miles on her with skin like tree bark. She had a clipboard in her bony grasp, her knuckles like rocks under taut sallow skin.

“Either one of you going to speak?” The sarcasm felt good, sharp like a seed of jalapeno on his tongue. “Yoo-hoo.” He looked from one to the other as they sat there like mannequins. “And, what’s with those sweaters?”

They both sported white crewneck sweaters with a red “H” emblazoned mid chest like some kind of uniform. Tony’s gaze slid down to his own garments expecting to see the same indigo jeans and blue striped shirt he’d put on this morning. Instead, he was in a black suit that even he, no expert at such things, knew was a piece of crap. He wore no shoes and one big toe poked through a hole in a navy blue sock. He wouldn’t be caught dead in the getup.

“What the hell?” His words boomeranged off the white walls like a crack of thunder. “How’d I get in this pile of rags and what the hell am I doing here?”

The man at the desk pinned Tony with an onyx stare and screwed his lips into a knot.

“Are you always this grumpy?” The man’s voice was gravelly, like his vocal chords were rusted. His head bobbled like a dashboard toy.

The woman looked up from her clipboard and fixed her cloudy gray eyes on Tony, as well. He felt like a goldfish in a bowl on a shelf. The broad wagged a gnarled accusatory finger. “Come on,” she coaxed in a voice that sounded like she was under water. “Give us a smile.”

A familiar zing raced through Tony, the first sign of life amidst the fog in his brain. He didn’t like being chastised and he didn’t like these two clowns dressed like orderlies, or better yet, soda jerks.

He jolted up from the chair like it was electric and somebody pushed the “on” button. “Grumpy, huh? Tell you what, pal. You ain’t seen grumpy. And, unless you tell me the truth about why the hell I’m here, you’re going to get yourselves a good dose of Tony Gliden losing it. So, one last time, what am I doing here?”

“Tony,” the woman’s voice held a gauzy wrap of gratuitous condescension. “There’s no way to sugar-coat the facts, so put simply, you’re dead.”

Guest Post:
On Writing – The Magic of Research

When I do some research for a book idea I sometimes strike unexpected gold.
In my latest release, Victoria at Sea, a contemporary romance with a light paranormal twist, the story centers around a runaway bride, Victoria, who decides to take her honeymoon cruise anyway only to discover the man she just jilted is on the ship, as well.
I wanted to have Victoria take one of those daytime excursions with some women she befriends on the ship.  That’s where the research came in.  I wanted to find just the right day trip from the port in Cancun.  I came across information on a little island just about four miles long and just 2,000 or so feet wide called “Isla Mujeres,” the island of women.  Bingo!
Further research told me that the island is sacred to a Mayan goddess, Ix’Chel, the moon goddess of birth and medicine.  Legend has it that Ix’Chel used a large vessel of water to pour life-giving water to crops and people that needed healing.  She helped women stand strong in the storms of life, guided them on how to face all weather.  Each year, I learned, the island hosts  retreats where women embrace their strength and the power of each other.
The information got me thinking.  How could Ix’Chel ‘s legacy help my story, help my heroine and her supporting cast?  I got to work.  Ideas came flying at me, the symbolism alive and breathing itself into the scene.  What began as some basic research on a little daytime jaunt off a ship docked in Cancun turned out to be the catalyst for a much deeper layer of the story.
Oh, and, bonus, now I have a new bucket list item – Visit Isla Mujeres!

AUTHOR BIO:

Born to a feisty Italian mother and a gentle blue-eyed Irishman, I was given the name “Marykate,” inspired by Maureen O’Hara’s character in the movie, The Quiet Man, an old-time favorite love story that co-starred John Wayne. With a grandmother Catherine and an Aunt Mary the name was an obvious choice.

I've been writing stories all my life. There's an old Macy’s box in my attic filled with my writings from childhood, now smudgy-looking pages produced on my portable Olivetti Underwood typewriter, an eighth-grade gift from my Grandmother Catherine.

I am a recent First Place winner of a short story contest sponsored by Reader’s Digest Magazine and write a column entitled “Boomer Humor” that appears monthly in my neighborhood newspaper.

My husband and I are our own love story. We have a slap-happy middle-aged second marriage with a combined total of six grown children, one delightful granddaughter, another precious little baby on the way and one ridiculously spoiled, amazingly handsome cat named Sammy.

Book Blast + #Giveaway: Where the Heart Is by Jennie Marsland @GoddessFish

Where the Heart Is
by Jennie Marsland
GENRE: Historical Romance

BLURB:

When Rochelle McShannon moves with her father from Morgan County, Georgia to the Yorkshire Dales, she thinks she’s leaving behind everything that matters to her. Her mother has passed away, her twin brother is going west to avoid the looming Civil War, and her family’s unpopular views on slavery and secession have destroyed her relationship with the man she hoped to marry. If returning to her father's childhood home eases his grief, Chelle asks for nothing more.

Martin Rainnie understands grief. Since the loss of his wife in childbirth, he’s known little else, except anger. He’s retreated to his farm and turned his back on the world, including his baby daughter, who’s being fostered by Chelle’s relatives. With little Leah drawing them together, Martin begins to wonder if he can love again – and convince Chelle to do the same.

But the war overseas has far-reaching consequences, even in a small English village. Can Martin and Chelle overcome danger, loss, and bitterness to make a home where the heart is?

Excerpt:

A few stray notes from Martin’s fiddle drifted from the open window. He played the first few bars of a tune, stopped awkwardly and began again, feeling his way through the waltz as if he hadn’t played it in a long time. Then he played it again with more assurance. The lilting melody rang out, warm and full of expression, until Chelle felt like getting up and dancing. Jessie was right. The man had a gift.

He slid from the waltz into an arrogant march that he played with a hint of a bounce, as if he were making sly fun of the tune’s seriousness. Chelle closed her eyes and smiled. Martin followed the march with a haunting air that sent her soaring over the dales in her imagination, looking down at their windswept emptiness.

One tune blended into the next until twilight faded and the stars came out. When Martin stopped playing, Chelle came back to earth with a jolt. How long had she been sitting there?

The house behind her was dark and silent. Jessie must have turned out the lamp and gone to bed. Through the open door, she heard Martin put away his fiddle and come to stand in the doorway. Then she felt his presence behind her. His voice touched her ear as he sat next to her. “You’d best come in, lass. It’s gettin’ late.”
