Review: Defective by B. Austin @MagicProse

Defective
(Outcast #1)
by B. Austin
Expected publication: August 13th 2016
Genre: YA Dystopian

Blurb:

In a society where rebels are unwanted, the Outcasts have their own underground world beneath the streets of New York City.

What type of society applies the word Defective to healthy young humans?

IT IS ALMOST A PERFECT WORLD. One government rules earth—the Commonwealth and one people—the Commoners. The pure society of the Commonwealth has but one contamination, the 1%, the Outcasts—rebellious kids and young adults who for some puzzling reason cannot or will not conform.

When Dante’s girlfriend vanishes like thousands of other Outcasts before her, he enlists the aid of friends to find her. They discover the shocking secret of what extreme the Commonwealth of Earth will go to ensure that Outcasts reform and obey the rules!

My Review:

Dante is a seventeen year old who lives in a world full of “Perfections” as they are called. Dante is what is known as an Outcast. An Outcast is anyone below the age of nineteen and who are considered to be defective. A defective or Outcast is someone who will not conform to the rules of the Commonwealth. The Outcast just want to be who they are and not someone else or someone the Commonwealth say they must be. Outcast can dress however they like but they must wear the “no symbol” on their clothes. There is no Outcast above the age of nineteen.

A lot of the Outcast has come up missing over the years. A few are returned to society conformed but some never return. If they are returned to society they are not the same people they once was. They no longer want to hang out with their bff’s. They are now a part of the “Perfections”.

When Dante’s girlfriend Kiara disappears he makes it his life Priority to find her. He will break any and all of the Commonwealth rules to find her even if it means spending time in lockdown. Dante with the help of his friends as well as defective’s from other Outcast groups start doing a little detective work that hopefully will lead them to Kiara and the other missing Outcast. But some are not quite willing to put aside their differences for someone that is not a part of their little group long enough to help out a fellow Outcast. They are only concerned about their own and most probably themselves first.

Outcasts have their own secret place in the underground tunnels. Most Outcast do not get along at all but some are willing to put aside their differences long enough to find their missing people and to find out what the Commonwealth is up to.

Defective is a very fast and enjoyable read. It grabbed me right from the beginning and didn’t want to let go. I fell into the Outcast world and loved every minute of it. I loved the message that Defective had to tell us. I love reading books where the author has planted a message in the book. This kind makes for the best books to read and will leave you wanting more. I can’t wait for the next book 5 Chances to find out more about the Outcast and to know what the Commonwealth are up to. What are they doing to Dante, Kiara, Dice, Jazz, Valentin, Ivory and all the other Defectives?

EXCERPT

Ardara, County Donegal, Ireland
March, 1787

Éamonn Doherty eased onto the old rocking chair beside the crackling fire. As soon as he settled, he was bombarded with children, clamoring eagerly for a story from Grandfa.
Well, it was his fault. Whenever he returned from his wanderings around the country, he would give them a story, a tale of Ireland’s past or his own.
The bairns settled onto the ground at his feet. There were Esme and Eithne, the twins, looking stark and thin with shocks of wild red hair and too many freckles to count.
“That's my spot! I always sit there, Eithne, and you know it!”
Eithne looked at her sister and sniffed, saying nothing. She turned to Éamonn and blinked as if innocent.
Esme pushed at her sister, but Eithne was braced for it. She resisted the shove and looked back over her shoulder with disdain.
Fuming, Esme crossed her arms.
In the far corner, with her arms wrapped firmly around her knees, sat the youngest sister, wee Brighid. Everyone called her Bridey. Her solemn green eyes peered at him, owl-like. She must be about ten years old by now. And little Níaṁ wasn’t a sister, but a cousin, her parents having died of a fever. A brown wren, she was plump and sweet, still a toddler.
Éamonn would have preferred some grandsons to pass his stories to, but his son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Shona, had given him only granddaughters thus far. Still, he loved them dearly. His two other children were both dedicated to the church, so Brian was his last hope for grandsons. Éamonn looked at the girls and decided perhaps a story of a manly hero might do them for the night.
He fixed his eyes on wee Níaṁ until she giggled nervously. He tousled up his thick white hair until it looked like a lion and she laughed. Smiling, he began.
“Tonight our tale will begin with a hero of great fame, for who has never heard of Fionn Mac Cumhaill, leader of the Fianna, Warriors of Ireland?”
Timidly, Bridey raised her hand.
Interrupted, Éamonn cocked his head. “Yes, child? What is it, my dear?”
“I haven’t heard of him, Grandfa.”
Éamonn closed his eyes, reaching for patience. The children weren’t to know what a rhetorical question was.
“That’s all right, mo chuisle. I will be telling you now, so?”
The girl nodded and wrapped her hands more tightly around her knees until she was just a pair of feet, arms and a curly mass of red hair sparkling in the firelight. For a moment, Éamonn went back in time, to the memory of his dear, long-dead wife, Katie. She had hair such as that, wild and bright. The windows rattled as the wind outside picked up. The children all shifted uncomfortably.
“The Fianna were a band of warriors, pledged to protect the shores of Ireland from foreigners. Fionn’s father was the leader of the Fianna, so he had his son raised by a warrior woman. Have you ever seen a warrior woman, Eithne?”
“I have!” The girl was the boldest of the lot. “There is a woman who hunts up in Bunbeg. I heard Alan say she came into his dad’s bakery one day!”
“I heard that first! He told me first.” Esme said.
“Girls, that’s enough. Would you like to know about this warrior woman?”
It did the trick. All four children looked up at him, expectant.
He grinned and got back into the rhythm of his tale.
“This great woman was called Liath Luachra, and she was tall, with long muscles and longer hair. Her brown hair she kept in thin braids, which went all the way down to her knees. She was a fierce warrior, always clad in skins and furs, and she taught Fionn all her arts. When he had learned all he could from her, he left to join the Fianna.
“But the Fianna knew him for his father’s son and worried for his youth and safety. They told him he must leave, and they could not protect him from harm. This angered Fionn, so he left in a temper. After his temper had cooled, he sought out a Druid to learn wisdom. The Druid he found was named Finnegas. Finnegas spent seven years trying to catch the Salmon of Knowledge, and he had just caught the fish before Fionn found him. It roasted on the fire, and Finnegas told Fionn to watch it while he got more firewood.
“Fionn watched the fish, watched it bubble and pop, sizzle and squeak.”
Níaṁ let out a squeak of her own to help with the sound effects.
“He saw a great blister form on the skin of the salmon, growing larger and larger, about to pop. He pressed his thumb to it to push it back down so the skin wouldn’t be blemished. As he did so, his skin burned, so he stuck his thumb in his mouth.” Éamonn demonstrated with his finger and looked around until each child did the same.
“But he had done a terrible thing, now.”
“What was so horrible, Grandfa?” Bridey asked with wide eyes. “All he did was touch the fish!” She replaced the thumb in her mouth absent-mindedly.
“Ah, that is true. But, you see, Fionn was the first to taste of the flesh of the Salmon of Knowledge, and it meant he now had all the Salmon’s great wisdom. Finnegas was furious and chased him out with a club, but Fionn now had the knowledge and wisdom he needed to lead the Fianna fairly.”
All the girls watched him for the end of the tale.
“In the end, he controlled his own fate, and therefore could make himself happy. That's all that any one of us can do, aye?”
When Níaṁ realized the tale was over, she belatedly removed her thumbs from her mouth. As she did, he picked her up into his lap and rocked in front of the fire with her. She was a solid, warm little child. Brian might not be able to make his farm work well, but he at least kept his children fed.
He sang a sad, low song of lost love and broken promises until each child fell asleep on the soft, white wings of fantasy.

EXCERPT:

I step closer until she finally raises her head and sees me.
Her eyes, hidden under thick lashes, sparkle with enthusiasm as she looks up at me. She playfully bites her lip as I approach, and I reciprocate with an added tongue swipe.
Her brow rises as I place my hand on her hip, pulling her closer toward me.
She hesitates a second, but when the beat drops, her hands slide up to my shoulders, and she starts to dance. The friction between us is undeniable, her ass swaying side to side against my hands. I cop a feel, which she doesn’t seem to mind. We inch closer and closer, her eyes irresistible, but her mouth even more so. When our lips almost touch, her lips part.
“Who are you?” she whispers.
“Call me John …” I murmur.
“John who?”
“John Doe.”
She smirks. “Your real name.”
I twirl her around in my arm and lean on her shoulder, my lips dangerously close to her neck. She takes in a sharp breath of air as my teeth graze her skin, my breath probably already setting her on fire.
“Do you really want to know?”
Slowly, she nods her head.
“Hmm … all right. Because you’re so curious. Let’s do two questions.”
“Two?”
“You ask me a question, I answer, then I ask you a question, and you answer.”
“Okay. Who goes first?” she asks.
“You.” I smirk.
“Why did you pick me?”
“I saw you in your high heels and your tight skirt. I like how you looked back,” I whisper, licking my lips. “My turn. Do you like to dance with strangers?”
“Is that a real question?”
“Ah-ah,” I say. “Can’t answer with a question.”
“Okay. Well, then I guess … maybe?”
“Hmm …”
Her hips grind against mine as we lose ourselves in the music. My body close to hers, it’s almost as if we’re becoming one. We don’t know each other … and that makes it perfect.
“My turn,” she says. “Do you do this often?”
“Yes.”
“That’s not really an answer,” she says.
“Then don’t ask a question that can be answered with just one word,” I muse.
She sighs. “You’re a know-it-all, aren’t you?”
“I just like games and rules,” I say with an arrogant smile. “Last one … What would you say if I took you home tonight and fucked you like you’ve never been fucked before?”
She sucks in a short breath.
I place a hand over her mouth. “Don’t answer yet. Dance with me first.”
We dance some more, my hands incapable of staying off her. As I become heady from the lust, I press a soft, succulent kiss on her neck, which creates goose bumps all over her body. Her body melts in my arms, and my cock stiffens in response.
“I can’t control myself …” I whisper into her ear.
She twists around in my arms again, and we dance closer than before, my hands on her body in places they shouldn’t be. She leans in, so I go in for the kill.
I kiss her full on the lips, enjoying the spicy taste of her drink.
She kisses me back just as fervently, and I take it as a sign to kiss her harder, faster. I show her what’s in store for her if she goes home with me. And right when she becomes needy, I stop, pull back, and let her suck in the empty air.
“Are you game?” I ask.
“Yeah …” she mutters under a heavy breath.
“No names. No numbers.”
“Isn’t that dangerous?”
“Fuck yes, it is.”
“Hmmm …” A smile forms on her lips. “I like dangerous.”

EMBERS EXCERPT:

Sawyer sobered quickly. The obvious hurt on his face made me regret my words.
“You’re right. I’m a monster. I won’t argue on that account. But your kind isn’t squeaky clean either. Just because your ancestors were arch angels doesn’t give you the right to police the world.” His eyes narrowed. “Do you know how many humans have died from wars that Watchers caused?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” I lied.

I was already suspicious about Watchers. Ila scared the crap out of me sometimes with her demeanor and righteous words.
But Sawyer didn’t need to know that I questioned the Watchers myself. His opinion didn’t count.
When I turned back to him, ready to change the subject, I wasn’t prepared for the darkening of his already almost black eyes. He leaned in closer and our breaths mingled. In and out I breathed, allowing his familiar woodsy scent to fill my nose. I know Sawyer. Oh, I know him.
Don’t do it, Ember.
But I couldn’t stop.
When he kissed me, my lips parted automatically.
Deep down, I wanted him, desired him madly, and had from the first time I’d seen him in my dreams.
In that instant, I didn’t care that he was a Demon.

Excerpt:

HASTY PREPARATIONS

SEAN KNEW SARA’S HEART WAS jumping in before she listened to the warnings that would be going off in her head. But that was his Sara—always taking a leap before assessing the fall. He wasn’t just going to stand by and watch the woman he loved get hurt, though. The chances of this being her mother, after all these years, was hard to believe. Why resurface now if it wasn’t for the money? It seemed easier to accept that she was a fake, playing a role in staking a claim in their fortune.

While the DNA tests would confirm or deny whether she was, in fact, Sara’s biological mother, until then how much drama would Sara live through? Whether she verbalized it or not, he could tell by the subtle twist of her lips, the way she looked on this woman, that she wanted to believe this was her real mom. There was also a mess in Sara’s eyes, a swirl that, to him, spoke to guilt.
Sara hadn’t stopped moving since they got back to the house. She was hurrying around tidying up and preparing the meal.
On her way by this time, he took her hand to slow her stride, and he drew her in to him. “You can relax, darling. It will all work out.”
“I just want everything to be perfect.” Her eyes scanned his.
“And it will be.” He led her to a sofa in their sitting room. “Please, darling, sit and let’s talk.”
Her eyes sparked. “I know what you’re going to say.”
He tapped the tip of her nose. “You’ve always been sort of a mind reader, but—”
“You’re going to tell me to keep my head about me, to not rush to accept this woman as my mother.”
The way she stared into his eyes made him feel like he was the enemy. “I just don’t want you to get hurt.”
“And I appreciate that.” Her raised shoulders relaxed slightly, and her tone softened when she continued. “I know that you had a rough life, Sean. You lost your mother when you were nine, your father when you were a young adult. But I’ve never known my real parents.” She paused, and there was that flicker of guilt dancing across her eyes. “Jeannie and Leon are the world to me. They were there for me from the beginning and will always be Mom and Dad. But, if this woman is who she claims to be, well, this may sound silly, but I’ll feel I belong in this world.”
He wasn’t prepared for those words and they attacked him as if a thrown fist, hitting him dead in the heart.
She put her hand on his leg. “Darling, please, know that I love you with all my heart and soul.”
He nodded. No words would form.
“And that didn’t come out right. I know I belong because of you, because of Jeannie and Leon, but this is my chance to know where I came from. I have never had a blood relative all my life.”
The way her eyes misted as she spoke chipped away at the gnawing pain in his chest, somehow making his life experience seem less significant. Still, losing his mother had impacted him as a boy. He remembered the isolation, the separation from others his age when there were school outings. Even watching his friends unpack their boxed lunches, he knew their mothers had taken extra care. His dad had tried, bless his soul, but he was a man. He didn’t put the little cards in his lunch box telling him to smile or reminding him that he was loved. While the boys who received these would blush from embarrassment, Sean would have traded spots with them in a heartbeat.
Yes, he knew grief, he knew heartache, he knew what it was like to be left in the world without a blood relative—but the latter not fully. He had his dad until he was nineteen and, to this day, he had his uncle Ray, although he lived in North Carolina.
He wanted to warn her to guard her heart, but seeing the look in her eyes, he couldn’t speak those words. “I’m happy for you.”
She leaned in and kissed him, then pulled back slowly. “I love you for that.”
He nodded and smiled. She had stolen his heart two years ago when he’d first met her, and with their spoken vows that bond had only solidified into concrete.
Sara tapped the couch and went to get up. “I better get that roast in the oven.”
“Roast?”
One of her brows arched slightly higher than the other, a smirk on her lips. “Yes, and I am fully capable of cooking it, you know.”
He raised his hands in surrender. “Hey, I never said that you weren’t.”
“Uh-huh.” She laughed as she pranced back to the kitchen.

Sean stayed on the couch, his heart wanting to accept Leslie, but his mind warring against the request. He would try to open up, for Sara’s sake, but there was a little voice inside his head that cautioned him to stay vigilant.
