Review: Desperate World (EMP Aftermath #9) by Grace Hamilton

Desperate World

EMP Aftermath #9

by Grace Hamilton

Published: May 20, 2026

Genre: Dystopian, Science Fiction, Post-Apocalyptic

Blurb:

All they want is a safe haven. They’ll have to fight to get it…

Dr. Laurel Rivera, Bear and their small band of survivors have left their home, fleeing into the wilderness near Lake Superior. With children to protect, they’re forced to make ruthless choices, as they run a gauntlet of desperate survivors willing to kill for vital supplies.

Then Mae collapses.

Pregnant, feverish, and slipping fast, she needs medication Laurel doesn’t have—and can’t make. The only remaining supply belongs to another group: armed, organized, and determined to protect what’s theirs at any cost.

Stealing the medicine could ignite a war they won’t survive. Walking away will condemn Mae and her unborn child to death.

As time runs out and enemies close in, Bear and Laurel must decide how far they’re willing to go to save one life—and how many others they’re willing to damn in the name of survival.

My Review:

A sorrowful beginning, having everything returned to you in such a manner. It felt akin to awakening from a dreadful disaster and having to relive it all once more. My heart ached for Mae and the struggles she was facing.

Then they were forced to abandon their home, gripped by fear of who or what might be pursuing them. The Rossis are still in pursuit, searching for Laurel, eager to seize their medical supplies and likely anything else they possess.

With the Rossis hot on their heels, Laurel and Bear feel they have no option but to gather the group and flee. They decide to head to an island on Lake Superior, believing it will offer them a safe and isolated existence.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Desperate World, particularly about their preparations for the journey, especially with the children contributing in every way they could. I adore narratives that feature children and families. I could vividly picture the kids on the beach, assisting with the boat repairs. I could almost hear the gentle sound of the waves lapping at the shore.

Then Mae falls ill while pregnant. Laurel suspects she might have gestational diabetes. Concern fills Laurel as they lack the necessary medicine to help Mae. The only way to obtain the required medication is through theft. Acquiring the medicine could ignite a conflict. Laurel and Bear are torn about the best course of action. Should they instigate a war to save one individual, or should they prioritize the welfare of the entire group?

I eagerly anticipate diving deeper into this world, the EMP Aftermath series, or at least I sincerely hope more installments are forthcoming. I am excited to follow the journeys of Laurel, Bear, Kate, Mae, Trent, and the rest to see where their paths lead next.

I wholeheartedly recommend Desperate World to all fans of post-apocalyptic tales. Be sure to grab a copy today!

Plagued World

EMP Aftermath #8

by Grace Hamilton

Published: April 15, 2026

Genre: Dystopian, Science Fiction, Post-Apocalyptic

Blurb:

Society collapsed. But the true nightmare is only beginning…

Bear and Laurel are still reeling from the attack on their small community. Their clinic has been reduced to ashes, and what little remains of their medical supplies won’t last long. They need time to recover—but fate has other plans.

A brutal illness rages through the battered community, and there’s nothing Laurel can do to stop it. One by one, Thunder Bay’s residents are falling sick. Now, Trent is infected—and getting worse. With only natural remedies at their disposal, time is running out. They have to stop the spread before it’s too late.

Meanwhile, Gideon and Sharon travel with Kate, desperate to leave old enemies behind. But long, dangerous miles still separate them from the relative safety of Thunder Bay. And to make matters worse, someone is following them…

With two frightened children depending on them for protection, they’d rather avoid a fight. But every time they slip away, their pursuers close in again. It’s not bandits. It’s not hostile locals. They’re being hunted.

And soon, there’ll be nowhere left to run…

My Review:

An illness is spreading rapidly in Thunder Bay, and Laurel finds herself powerless to combat it without any medication. She is doing everything within her power to assist everyone while ensuring the safety of Mae and her unborn child, but now Trent has also fallen ill.

At the same time, Gideon, Sharon, Lisa, and Kate are on the run, particularly Kate, who has stolen a truck loaded with medications. They are attempting to reach Thunder Bay, but their chances are dwindling after they shoot one of the men who was firing at them. Their situation has escalated from a desire for revenge to a thirst for blood, putting Gideon, Sharon, Lisa, and Kate in greater danger than ever before.

The more I read, the more I was drawn in, and I couldn't have stopped even if I had wanted to, which I certainly didn't, as everyone's circumstances grew more intense with each page I turned.

I know I've mentioned this before, but I can't emphasize it enough: this is one of the best series I've ever encountered. The world-building improves with every book, and the suspense keeps me hanging on every word as I eagerly anticipate the fates of the characters. I wish I could turn the pages faster as I race toward the conclusion, not that I want it to end—certainly not now, and not ever.

I wholeheartedly recommend that all fans of dystopian fiction pick up a copy of Plagued World today for another exhilarating installment in the EMP Aftermath series!

Sabotaged World

EMP Aftermath #7

by Grace Hamilton

Published: March 11, 2026

Genre: Dystopian, Science Fiction, Post-Apocalyptic

Blurb:

A deadly storm looms—and an old enemy prepares to strike…

For two years, Bear’s cabin has been a haven from the outside world. Hidden deep in the forest, Bear, Laurel, Mae, Trent, and their dog Jess have built a life for themselves—including a thriving medical clinic run by Laurel serving their isolated community. But their peaceful lives are shattered when a late winter blizzard engulfs the area, just as a fire breaks out and burns a neighbor’s cabin to the ground.

When a second cabin burns, with tragic results, the community is forced to face the ugly truth. Someone is targeting their community, and no one is safe.

Meanwhile, Gideon is on the run. His militia is no match for Bennett’s brutal paramilitary force, and with Sharon and Lisa in tow, he’s desperate for refuge. But a plea for help forces him into a deadly confrontation, and now Bennett will stop at nothing to hunt him down.

Out of options, Gideon heads for Bear’s cabin—the only sanctuary left. But he isn’t the only one bringing danger. As the storm rages and tensions mount, Bear’s sanctuary becomes the battleground for survival.

With enemies closing in, will they stand together—or lose everything?

My Review:

I am absolutely thrilled to witness the continuation of the EMP Aftermath Saga with its eighth installment, Sabotaged World by Grace Hamilton. What a fantastic addition to this series, Sabotaged World turned out to be. I adore this series and can’t seem to get enough of its remarkable characters, Bear, Laurel, Mae, Trent, Jess, Gideon, Lisa, and Sharon.

The world-building is among the finest I’ve ever encountered. The descriptions are equally well-crafted; I had no trouble whatsoever envisioning everything I was reading playing out in my mind as if I were part of this extraordinary world myself. You genuinely feel a connection to the characters, as if they are individuals you would like to befriend.

Someone is setting fire to the cabins in Bear, Laurel, Mae, and Trent’s small community. What could their motive be for such actions? Is it out of vengeance? Do they simply enjoy igniting fires?

Meanwhile, Gideon, Lisa, and Sharon have finally managed to break free from Bennett and his malicious ways. They have determined that their only refuge is to rush to Bear and Laurel’s as fast as they can, hoping to arrive there before Bennett catches up with them.

As soon as I began reading Sabotaged World, I was completely engrossed; stopping was not an option, even if I had wanted to. The more I read, the more intense the tension grew as I anticipated the confrontation that was bound to occur when Bennett showed up at Bear and Laurel’s home.

I wholeheartedly recommend Sabotaged World to all fans of post-apocalyptic fiction! Snatch up a copy of Sabotaged World today!

Blurb:

Society falls. Anarchy rises. Courage endures…

Laurel survived the collapse of civilization. In the aftermath of a devastating EMP disaster, she fought to turn Minneha Hospital into a place of refuge. Now, the hospital has become a beacon of hope—but a beacon can attract predators, too.

Predators like Arlo, the brutal leader of a ruthless gang. Desperate to save his dying son, Arlo takes over the hospital and gives Laurel an impossible ultimatum: save his terminally ill boy… Or watch everyone she cares for die.

Meanwhile, Laurel’s husband Bear continues his trek across Minnesota, alone save for his loyal dog, Jessamine. The last time he teamed up with a fellow survivor, he was betrayed and almost killed. Now he keeps to himself, as the remnants of society turn to violence and bloodshed in a savage fight for survival.

Bear can take care of himself—but it’s cold, and it’s getting colder. And if he wants to reach Laurel before winter hits, he’ll have to do the unthinkable.

He’ll have to trust someone…

My Review:

EMP Aftermath is a captivating tale of a doctor's resilience in the face of a power outage. Laurel, the protagonist, stays on the job even as others abandon their posts, determined to care for her patients, including her mother, who is hospitalized with cancer.

This intense and mesmerizing story had me hooked from the start, as the author's exceptional world-building and vivid descriptions brought the narrative to life. The author's talent for storytelling is evident, and I found myself eagerly turning the pages, eager to see what would happen next.

The EMP Aftermath series has the potential to make a thrilling transition to the screen, whether as a movie or a TV show. The captivating premise and the author's ability to craft a compelling and immersive world make it a prime candidate for adaptation.

The characters in this dystopian tale are captivating, even the villains, who play a vital role.

I highly recommend checking out EMP Aftermath for an engaging adventure in this thrilling, post-apocalyptic world. It's a must-read for fans of the genre!

The final battle for survival has begun…

Reunited with his wife and daughter, Bear knows his family will never be truly safe until the Militia has been eliminated. Determined to end the threat once and for all, they agree to help the Freemen with one final push against this dangerous enemy.

Meanwhile, Laurel struggles to combat a new sickness sweeping through the Freemen ranks before they lose anyone else. Seeking vital medical supplies, they travel to Laurel’s former sanctuary, South Minneha Hospital. But a lot has changed since they left to go find Mae. The hospital is in ruins and the remaining residents are struggling to survive in the wreckage.

The Militia have one final trick up their sleeves — weapons of war, that survived the EMP — and General James Bruce plans to rain fire upon his enemies. Bear, Laurel and the others have no choice. They must fight to survive.

But against such overwhelming firepower, is all hope lost?

My Review:

Bear, Laurel, Mae, and Trent were heading to Bear's house in Thunder Bay, but Laurel wanted to stop by Minneha Hospital, where she had worked before the EMP, to check on her friends.

Gideon, Mae's friend, is with the militia when he overhears some of the men discussing an attack on the hospital where Bear, Laurel, and Mae are staying. Gideon leaves the militia to find Mae and inform her that they plan to attack and steal all their supplies. The militia no longer aims to help people; instead, they want to conquer the world and take full control.

The hospital is in chaos since Laurel was last there; the roof has collapsed due to frozen pipes that thawed and burst. It may no longer be safe for anyone to stay there. When the militia arrives, Laurel must try to convince her friends to leave and find a safer place.

Mae believes they should stay and fight the militia. She thinks they will keep chasing them unless they stop them now. Is it possible for Mae, Bear, Laurel, Art, and the other Freeman to stop the militia before it's too late?

From the very first page, Lawless World grabbed my attention and held it all the way through. It still sticks with me, and I believe it will for a long time. The world-building is incredible, as I’ve mentioned before. I can’t fully express how amazing it is.

I have truly loved reading the EMP Aftermath series and hate to see it end. I will miss this world and all its characters. I’ve spent so much time with these characters that they feel like friends.

I highly recommend Lawless World to fans of post-apocalyptic stories! Get your copy of Lawless World today!

Collapsed World

People are dying as the two groups clash, loyalties are tested, and Laurel and Bear must make the hardest choice of their lives. In the fight for survival, they struggle to answer a single burning question: how much can the ties of family withstand?

Goodreads ~ Amazon ~ BookBub

My Review:

When we last encountered Mae, she had just reunited with Bear and Laurel, but the happiness was fleeting as Mae felt remorse for abandoning her unit. As soon as she got the chance, Mae departed from the Freeman and returned to her unit, bringing along all the intelligence she had collected about them. She hoped that this information would earn her captain's trust.

Bear and Trent have been captured by the Army/militia, and Mae is following along with them. I am optimistic that she is merely waiting for the right moment to secure their release.

In the meantime, Laurel remains oblivious to the situation, but for now, she must remain with the Freeman, assisting the injured. Once she ensures everyone is taken care of, she will do everything in her power to save Bear, Trent, and hopefully Mae, too.

Collapsed World, like the other novels in the EMP Aftermath series, has kept me eagerly anticipating what would unfold next. It is a gripping read that keeps the pages turning without a single dull moment.

The world-building is among the finest I have ever encountered. The descriptions are equally impressive. I am eager to delve deeper into this incredible, enchanting world. I adore everything about it and find myself craving more.

I am excited to jump into the sixth and final installment in this collection, Lawless World, to discover where everyone's journey leads next and how it all concludes. Not that I want it to end; I wish it could continue endlessly.

I cherish nearly all the characters, though I must admit that even the antagonists play their essential roles effectively, and they excel in their functions.

I wholeheartedly recommend picking up a copy of Collapsed World for another thrilling adventure in a dystopian setting!
