Broken Lights
A brand new, fast-paced, standalone, contemporary romance
from Dianna Hardy

Norman Smithson is at the end of the line. His wife left him, women don't look at him, he was made redundant, and at forty, he could be just that little bit slimmer. He would be a has-been if he'd ever been a 'was' in the first place. He's not the Alpha male of the 21st century - or of any century. He was the chubby oddball who used to sit silently at the back of the class so he wouldn't get picked on.

Rosa is a dreadlocked, tattooed and pierced twenty-something, who uses her image as armour to keep everyone away from every broken thing about her. But her past is about to catch up with her … at the exact moment Norman finds himself in completely the wrong place, at the worst possible time.

One gunshot, one scramble for life, one unlikely couple, one very long night … can one damaged woman and one ordinary man, find the extraordinary in the very last second they're given?

Broken Lights is a standalone story of what's really worth fighting for, when one second is all you have left.

Expected release date: 15th January, 2015
Because of the Christmas period before release date, this title may not be eligible for pre-order, so mark your diaries for the 15th January!

Echo and Noah share everything - except the one thing Echo's just not ready for.

But when the source of Echo's constant nightmares comes back into her life, she has to make some tough decisions about what she really wants - even as foster kid Noah's search for his last remaining relatives forces them both to confront some serious truths about life, love, and themselves.

Excerpt

From Echo's Point of View

"Is that it?" Mrs. Collins asks. I told her everything: how my sales plummeted, my mother calling, the conversation with the Wicked Witch gallery owner, and me and Noah fighting. To cover that I'm lying, I hide my face in my hands when I answer, "Yes."

I like Mrs. Collins, but I can't look at her again if we share an analytical discussion regarding my sex life or, lack thereof, with Noah.

When I spread my fingers and peek at Mrs. Collins, her eyes have narrowed into slits. "That's not everything."

I lower my hands onto my lap. "Can't it be enough?"

Excerpt - My Demonic Ghost: Banished Spirits

I shook my head as a spasm of cold flooded my cheeks. Lock had my face cupped between his hands, staring with tight and intense concentration. He was only sparing an inch between my nose and his, his eyes so much prettier than those other grey, dead hues that I lost all thought of abandoning him.
"Careful Rach, don't stare at him." The people sitting next to us recoiled from our sudden closeness, confused by Lock who had seated himself up on my lap and was forcing his head down on top of mine. My breath got caught up in my throat as I folded my lips back into my mouth.
"Okay."
Lock lingered for a moment longer, not breaking the connection he had with me until he felt sure I wasn't going to do a runner. He slipped back into his own chair, fold his arms over his chest and resumed his intense staring, watching my eyes. He then shifted and shot a look over his shoulder, which I followed back to the face of the other Banished Soul who was evidently laughing privately to himself. He blinked at Lock once before looking back to me. Then slowly he lifted his wretched bone white hand, easing it down onto the shoulder of the little girl standing next to him. To my horror, she tensed at his advancement and glanced up, her neck tilting away as if cowering from a slap.
"We should get off the train," Lock insisted, shooting up from his seat.
"Can't we do anything?" I asked in hoarse desperation but Lock shook his head, intertwined his fingers with the folds of my sleeve and ushered me out the doorway furthest from the pair.
I couldn't stop myself from looking back, hoping that my eyes were deceiving me. The little girl tossed a worried look at her mum and reached out to touch her elbow, only to get her hand knocked away. The spirit continued laughing as the yellow lights in the carriage flickered. The doors opened with a jolt and I was yanked out. Lock kept pulling me forwards, not giving me a chance to call out. I wanted to tear the girl away from the spirit's filthy hands. The passengers getting on the train glanced at us wearily, leaning away.

Excerpt - My Demonic Ghost: The Reapers

Movement stirred the mist that surrounded us.
A soft ripple tore through the fog, followed closely by a moving darkness that crawled across the space. There was an awful cracking of breaking bones as the blackness came to a stop in front of us. Building itself up from the shadows, the creature pulled and fought against the murkiness that had carried it forward. A head of black long hair sprouted out, attached to a slender neck that curved into the torso of a snake-scaled woman. Her waist opened like a spoon, legs replaced with the long, thick tail of an eel that looped around the base of its body. The woman's face was covered completely by undulating black hair that slowly dripped from her face and fell to the ground.
From her sides grew long, thin limbs; seven arms that stretched out behind her and towered over us like spears. Each hand held a dark wooden mask; seven arms for seven masks. The creature purred in a series of clicks.
"Jordon, this is Mother. She is the gatekeeper to the temptations, the doorway to the Sins."
Mother clicked at us in her distorted rumble, her voice lost behind the folds of seeping black goo. At her appearance, Raix crept out of the darkness as well. He looked up at the serpent woman, intrigued by her, before whimpering behind me.
"Nice of you to finally show up," I griped and Raix snorted in reply.
Elliot motioned to First who stepped up and spat the spirit out at Mother's tail. The shadow ghost rolled onto his back, breathless and scared out of his wits. Before he even had the chance to run, Mother's tail lashed out and coiled around his torso, securing him. She sniffed the air around the spirit, passing judgement on him before one of her arms shifted down, bringing a mask to her face. With a snap, the mask was slapped over the planes of her cheekbones and swallowed into the black soup of her hair. The Banished ghost was inhaled through a line of smoke into the mouth and eyes of the mask before he completely disappeared. Mother let her tail unfold before she moved her hand back to the mask, prying it off her skin.
"You send Banished spirits here, to Mother."
"Where did she take him?" I asked.
"To be destroyed. They are sent here to be broken down, and once they are nothing but waste they are returned to the Spirit World to be recreated into something new."
"You recycle them?"
"Sometimes. Sometimes they are stored for power."
"Why seven masks?"
"Seven masks to fit the seven Sins: Lust, Greed, Gluttony, Wrath, Sloth, Vanity, and Envy. Each Banished is marked with the taint of a Sin, which makes them stand out from the rest of the spirits. But they are strong as well; you can't take on a Banished alone, especially if it's attached to a human Host. Using the person's soul, it can conjure up black magic and defeat you; it's only when Hunters are around that Banished become weakened. You need to break the chains. No Host means no power. Still, best to get backup when you come across them. Just remember, Banished come to Mother. Other spirits go to the Drop Off."
"Got it. Banished are to be destroyed. Don't worry; I won't let it loose next time."
"Good."
Now finished with the spirit, Mother broke apart in the same manner that she'd been built, her bones breaking and snapping in half, folding herself back into the darkness that carried her. Then she was gone.
"This is where they took Christophe, isn't it?"
Elliot lowered his head bitterly. "It's where they take all Reapers who misbehave. If not to destroy us, then to torture us into submission. Anyone can call upon Mother, human or spirit, but I don't know why anyone would want to. That is, unless they are trying to save someone from the Sin world. Even then they are just as likely to get caught themselves. And don't try calling her on the surface during the day. She hates the sunlight so you can only call her at night, otherwise she won't appear."
"How do you know how to find Mother?"
"In the Spirit Realm just call her name, she'll come. On the surface there is a special chant that'll get her to visit you. Binding seven, Mother of us all, move through darkness and reveal my truths. Reveal to me your curse of Sins. Show me my nature at the hands of demons."
