The Reader
by M.K. Harkins
Publication Date: August 17, 2016
Genre: Fantasy, Paranormal, Young Adult, Science Fiction

Blurb:

Hunted, shot, and without her memory, eighteen-year-old Ann Baker wakes in shallow water on a deserted Pacific Northwest island. She is soon approached by two young men claiming to be her friends. Something isn't right, but when gunshots sound, Ann is left with little choice but to allow Devon and Archer to help her escape. Soon she finds herself in their North Bend mountain compound, where the higher evolved humans claim to be mind-readers. While Ann heals, she realizes they believe her to be one of the last and most powerful of all - The Lost One.

She's welcomed by most with opened arms, but not everyone is happy about her arrival. A jealous adversary has plans for Ann, which spirals the entire Reader community into chaos.

As lies, murder, and betrayal threaten to rip apart the once harmonious mountain dwellers, Ann is thrust into making a decision that could save or devastate not only The Readers, but all of mankind. But there's just one glitch: by doing so it may require her to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Excerpt:

“That’s not what I’m talking about and you know it. She can’t go out in public looking like that.”

A sudden coldness hit my core. “Like what?” I asked and shot my iciest stare at him.

“Things are…things are showing,” he said as his hand swept up and down.

“Yes, she has legs. Get over it.” Lucy hooked her arm in mine. “Now, if you’ll excuse us, we have a party to get to.”

Author Interview:

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I know the exact date – February 3rd, 2013.  I ran out of reading material on my Kindle. I stared at the wall, for what seemed like hours. It was then that I had a light bulb moment.  I thought “Well, if I can’t find anything to read, I’ll just write something!”  The “something” became my first novel, Intentional.

Do you have a routine that you use to get into the right frame of mind to write?

Yes and no.  I need uninterrupted time (I’m not one of those authors who can write for an hour per day) Give me four hours, and I’m good to go.  I do my best writing in the parking lot waiting for my daughter to finish her basketball practice.

Where did you get the idea or inspiration for The Reader?

I have absolutely no idea!  When I sat down to write it, the words, plot, dialogue literally flew from my fingers to the keyboard.

What books have most influenced your life?

The first book I remember reading was Exodus. I was in the 7th grade and I couldn’t put it down. Although I can’t remember all the details, I’m sure it has made me more compassionate.

The next book would have to be Slammed by Colleen Hoover.  I know these two books are polar opposites, but nonetheless they both left their mark.  With Slammed, I was introduced to a simple, yet complex love story. It brought out all my dormant feelings of first love. My heart raced, my palms became sweaty – all of those feelings came back in a rush.  If it were not for Colleen Hoover, and her wonderful writing, I would not have written my first book.  That’s a pretty big influence!

What do you like to do when you are not writing?

When I’m not writing, I like to think about writing.  When my fingers are not on my keyboard, my brain is batting around dialogue.  I think it’s called “Voices in my Head” but for writers, it means creativity, not craziness (I think!)

Any future writing news you would like to share?

Yes!  I am currently working on Famous by Default (another YA book).  Also, if I get enough requests, I’ll continue with The Reader Series J  (So email me!)

My Review:

A young woman wakes up on a beach, a lone, shot and with no memory of being shot or who shot her or why. She doesn’t even know who she is or where she came from. But she is lucky in that she is rescued by two young men whom take her back with them to their home deep in the mountains.

She soon learns that the people at the compound where Devon and Archer have taken her know who and what she is. Little by little she finds out her name where she is from and why she is being hunted.

Her name is Ann and she soon figures out that something or someone in the compound is just not quite right if only she could put her finger on it. Someone will soon betray her. Even though she can’t remember anything she still has a soft, kind heart and will do whatever it takes to keep the people she loves and cares for safe.

The Reader was a fast and enjoyable read it grabbed me right from the first page and never let go right up until the end. I loved all the characters and the world that they lived in. Ann was one tough cookie who could fight as well or better than any man. I would love to read more about Ann, Devon, Lucy and Archer and of their lives now after everything they have been through.

There are a few characters that I would like to hear their side of the story and why they did the things they did. I would also like to know more about Ann, Devon, Lucy and Archer’s lives before. If you have not read The Reader then I would like to suggest that you do as well that is if you like a story filled with suspense, intrigue and lots of twist and turns then you will love The Reader I know I did.

Excerpt

“Pick it up, Julia! You can do this!”
I’m in the seventh circle of hell.
“Come on! Let’s move faster!” My sister Anna yells over the construction that we’re currently passing. As expected, we get a few whoops and whistles tossed at us from the workers. Pity flattery, I’m sure. Well, maybe not for Anna, but certainly for me. There’s absolutely nothing attractive about me right now.
To start, I don’t know if I’ve ever sweated this hard in my life. I look like I’ve taken a shower fully clothed. I’m sticky and perspiring, and it’s not even that hot outside. It’s a typical day near the end of May in Denver, Colorado. How did I let Anna convince me to do this? Oh that’s right, there was no convincing. She forced me. “It’ll be good for you,” she had said, lying through her devil teeth.
At this point I don’t know if my lungs will ever be the same. They actually ache with pain. And then there’s the ache in my calves, and really every other part of my body. Whoever thought of running as an extracurricular activity should be shot. A form of torture, yes. Exercise? I’d rather get a tooth pulled without Novocain.

Book Blitz + #Giveaway: Mr. Corporate by J.A. Huss @jahuss @XpressoTours

Mr. Corporate
J.A. Huss
(Mister #3)
Publication date: August 17th 2016
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Weston Conrad is the best headhunter in the business. That handsome smile goes a long way towards convincing most people to trust him with their future.
I’m not most people. I’m his direct competition. And it doesn’t hurt to be just the kind of woman he’s been looking for.
I’m gonna flash you these legs, Weston Conrad.
I’m gonna wear low-cut shirts and micro-mini skirts.
I’m gonna dazzle you with wit and conversation and kiss those lips like they’re exactly what I’ve been waiting for.
So don’t hate me when you figure out my secret.
You understand, right? You’re Mr. Corporate and this is just business.

square_tell_me_you_missed_this

EXCERPT

Weston takes off his tie and begins unbuttoning his shirt. My eyes open a little wider. I watch every move. The way his fingers flip each button loose. The way his tanned and muscular chest flashes me as the shirt comes apart. That stupid Corporate grin on his face.
I sigh with frustration just as he takes the whole thing off and starts going for his belt.
Will Weston Conrad strip naked to swim?
Oh, yeah. You bet your ass he will. I called him Naked Man back when we were together. He has a thing for it.
“Come on, Tori. Let’s swim. You don’t need a suit. I’ve seen your goods.”
“First of all,” I say, crossing my arms and maintaining eye contact as the pants come down, “I’m not ‘goods.’ Second of all, I’m not giving you the pleasure of seeing me naked after you’ve been such an asshole.”
“When was I an asshole?”
He’s kidding, right? “All the time.”
“I’m just truthful, Victoria. You just can’t handle the truth.”
“I’m tired of fighting—” But I stop talking. Because yeah, he still looks amazing in those black boxer briefs he’s partial to.
“Did you miss him?” West asks.
“Who?” I say, forcing myself to look up at his face.
“Naked Man?”
I almost laugh, but catch myself just in time. “Weston—” But before I can get anything else out, he’s crossing the floor, I’m backing up, my hands are up, warning him to stay away, and I bump into the couch and fall back.
He stops in front of me, his goddamned bulge staring me in the face.
At least he’s not hard.
Ooops. Spoke too soon.
“Weston, stop it.”
“Come on,” he says, extending his hand. “We’re going to the beach.”
“I’m not getting naked with you.”
“I don’t need you naked. Your fucking skirt is so short you could wade in up to your thighs.” He shakes his hand at me, urging. “Come on.”
I close my eyes so I can stop staring at the bulge, stop imagining his hard cock and all the ways I’ve been intimate with it in the past, and take his hand, letting him pull me to my feet. His arm slips around my back and he pulls me into his chest. God, I can feel his fucking dick against my hips.
“Victoria,” he says in my ear. “You’ve missed me,” he says, switching to the other one.
I wait for what comes next. It’s a thing he always did with me when I was on the verge of something. Panic, or sadness, or whatever comes with all the things we went through.
He would stand behind me, both hands squeezing my shoulders. His mouth would go to work on my earlobe, and my neck, and my mouth. Then his fingers would dip down into my bra to squeeze my breasts and pinch my nipples.
We’d always have sex after that. Always. It drove me crazy.
But before I can say anything—No, we’re not doing that, or, Back off, mister, I’m not yours—he backs away and he’s heading for the door, tugging me along.
I sigh, missing his attention so much in that unused moment.

WILLA

Rules are meant to broken.
Plans are supposed to change.

I knew the rules—knew them like the back of my hand. First one, never fantasize about a co-worker—or worse take him to bed. The other one, never believe you can change a man. Like ever.
And guess what?
Broke ’em. Destroyed ’em.
Damn near shattered those pesky little rules.
How was I supposed to know that Ryan Donahue was going to walk into my life as my roommate and co-worker, and rock my ever-loving world?

And now, our jobs are on the line.
My heart hangs in the balance.
I couldn’t just stick to the one single summer of sunsets.
I had to fall for the one man that I knew wouldn’t stay,
And I finally know why those rules were put into place.

RYAN

I had a plan.
A strategically orchestrated plan.
It was supposed to be one summer, a favor for a friend. And escape my family’s overzealous expectations. Then, I was out—on my way to the life I’d planned.
What I didn’t count on was the petite, yet adorable,
roommate, with a pair of green eyes that knocked me off my feet.
One look, and I was doomed.
But then, her name, Willa Bloom, that sent me over the edge.
I was lost in thought.
“Willa-she-be-good-in-bed?”
“Willa-she-like-a-one-night-stand?”
I couldn’t concentrate, couldn’t focus.
I wanted her—had to have her.

And now my plans,
Those well thought-out, perfectly polished plans?
Completely gone, vanished, disintegrated.
But I’m not going to let that happen,
Not to us.

Blurb Blitz + #Giveaway: Dead Still by Barbara Ebel @barbaraebel @GoddessFish

Dead Still
by Barbara Ebel
GENRE: Suspense/Thriller

BLURB:

Annabel Tilson is a medical student starting her first clinical rotation where she has high hopes of mastering patient care like her famous neurosurgeon father. However, she soon realizes that studying for surgery exams and taking care of patients is only part of the complex burden of her role as a surgical team member.

Grappling with a resident who hates her and a dreamy infatuation for her chief resident, she discovers an inordinate outbreak of patient mortality. But for Annabel to dig further puts her at risk of failing the rotation and ending her future career as a physician.

Excerpt:

When the entire group entered Mr. Newman’s room, he peered over his newspaper and smiled. He sat in the armchair next to the window, the last drips of his evening dose of antibiotic going into his IV.

“Well, look at you,” Robby said. “It appears your two primary surgical physicians have taken good care of you.”

Dr. Wallace and Annabel stepped forward, and Brandy shut the IV pump off before it started beeping.

“Only after that one used me for a pin cushion,” he said, pointing at Annabel.

Annabel’s shoulders sagged and she wondered if Dr. Mack was going to chime in. He’d done enough damage to her for the whole rotation.

“Actually, I’m glad she got that IV in,” Dr. Wallace said. “Otherwise I was going to have to start a central line.”

“No thank you, ma’am,” Mr. Newman said. “I know what those are and I don’t want no part of them.”

“You’ve had enough bowel rest,” Robby remarked. “But I bet you enjoyed that gelatin and bullion.”

“It was a stepping stone to the fat burger I’m going to devour when I get outta here.”
Dr. Pittman patted the patient’s shoulder. “You have a good night. I’m taking this motley crew with me,” he said, pointing towards the door.

“And where did you meet someone like her? Isn’t she out of your league, man?” He looked at Austin, who was clearly enjoying trying to get a rise out of him. He never lost control, but if someone could make him go off the reservation, it was Ashlee Daniels. She awoke urges in him he didn’t even know he had, but when it came to her, there were a lot of things he didn’t understand.

“Shut up, Austin. She’s a friend of Trish’s, and we’ve attended some of the same charity functions over the years. She’s one of the top consultants in her field.” He didn’t give them the full story; if they knew he double-checked every guest list to see if she would attend, he would never hear the end of it.

“And how hot is this Ashlee Daniels?”

Sam’s whole body tensed at the idea of Austin making a move on her. The thought of another man touching her, or getting to know the woman behind the persona, made him sick to his stomach. He wanted to be that man. “She’s off-fucking-limits, Austin.”

If he were honest, he would tell them he was too scared to make a move on her. Austin was right; she was way out of his league.

Austin laughed and put his hands in the air. “That hot, huh? Well, shit, I’m all for it.”

“I’m serious, man. Off-limits.”

Austin nodded, his way of telling Sam to chill the fuck out. But Sam’s whole body was wired and ready to explode at the thought of Austin getting too friendly with Ashlee.

Kaithlin Shepherd is the author of the Callaway series, the Brass series and the Saints and Sinners series.

Born and raised in Canada by a working single mom and a loving grandmother, Kaithlin surrounded herself with novels by Danielle Steele and Nora Roberts provided by her grandmother. Kaithlin quickly fell in love with reading. It was in high school, thanks to an English teacher, that Kaithlin wrote her first story (although if you ask for it, she will deny ever writing it) about a popular boy band. Inspired by constructive criticism, Kaithlin spent some time developing her love affair with words through more reading than someone would think possible.

After pursuing a higher education, Kaithlin, sat down with a pen and paper and decided to give writing a shot. With no false hope in mind, her first novel, Make Me Whole, slowly came to life. Putting fear and doubt aside, Kaithlin has published five books to date, and has eleven more set to be published in the next two years.
