My Review:

EMP Aftermath is a captivating tale of a doctor's resilience in the face of a power outage. Laurel, the protagonist, stays on the job even as others abandon their posts, determined to care for her patients, including her mother, who is hospitalized with cancer.

This intense and mesmerizing story had me hooked from the start, as the author's exceptional world-building and vivid descriptions brought the narrative to life. The author's talent for storytelling is evident, and I found myself eagerly turning the pages, eager to see what would happen next.

The EMP Aftermath series has the potential to make a thrilling transition to the screen, whether as a movie or a TV show. The captivating premise and the author's ability to craft a compelling and immersive world make it a prime candidate for adaptation.

The characters in this dystopian tale are captivating, even the villains, who play a vital role.

I highly recommend checking out EMP Aftermath for an engaging adventure in this thrilling, post-apocalyptic world. It's a must-read for fans of the genre!

About the Author

 

 Chris Wright is a U.S. historian, author, and lecturer at Hunter College, City University of New York, specializing in labor history and radical political theory. His work explores the history of capitalism and social movements, with a focus on building an international left capable of confronting economic inequality, rising authoritarianism, and ecological collapse.

Wright is the author of multiple works of political nonfiction, including Worker Cooperatives and Revolution: History and Possibilities in the United States and Popular Radicalism and the Unemployed in Chicago during the Great Depression. His newest release, Class War, Then and Now: Essays toward a New Left, compiles a decade of essays originally published in respected left-wing and independent outlets such as Dissent, New Politics, CounterPunch, Socialist Forum, Compact, and Common Dreams.

Over the years, his analysis and commentary have appeared in publications ranging from the Washington Post to Truthout, earning him recognition for his Marxist-informed, historically grounded critiques of capitalism and his advocacy of a democratic socialist movement.

In addition to his academic work, Wright has written philosophical essays, fiction, and poetry, reflecting a lifelong interest in art, music, and the human condition. As the shadowy figure moved from shelf to shelf, ornate gilt decoration caught what dim light there was on his grey-turquoise armour. Carvings of ancient scribes and tomes written to record the passing of aeons on many worlds across many planes. The books he tended were part of the vast repository of information that he had collected through his long lifetime. Books here took the form of sacred texts carved in clay, or written on scrolls of vellum, or even human skin. Enormous tooled leather-bound volumes with gilt pages or with golden clasps, some were chained and bound, their knowledge too dangerous to be shared or accessed by mere mortals. The shelves had been arranged by subject and ordered in a timeline for each category. There wasn’t any index system. The Librarian worked using only his memory, knowing each and every volume, regardless of when it was written or when it was obtained. Nothing was forgotten, his memory was a storehouse of wisdom and knowledge from across the cosmos.

With his brother and sister, they had probably gathered the entire history of the cosmos. From time to time, they would travel the astral planes in search of new knowledge and rendezvous every millennium to discuss and compare notes to set quests for each of them to fulfil in the search of even more ancient texts. Legend had it the three siblings were born of the Goddess of Wisdom and their father was a High Priest of the Ti-Botta.

What is your favorite part of the book?

It’s difficult to state which is my favourite part of the book without giving something of the plot away. But something happens to Indigo that is really the making of her. It empowers her beyond anything expected.

Does your book have a lesson? Moral?

The book has several themes running throughout. Shadowslayers is a metaphysical science-fantasy journey that weaves together:

• Ancient Vedic wisdom

• Modern scientific speculation

• Deep psychological and spiritual inquiry

At its heart, it asks:

• What is consciousness?

• Can we alter fate?

• What does it mean to be whole in a fragmented universe?

  Through the two protagonists, Ignatius and Indigo, it explores how we might answer. Indigo is burdened by existential dread, alcohol, grief, and confusion about her place in the multiverse. Ignatius is haunted by divine lineage, recurring visions, and questions of destiny. So whilst there may not be a moral as such, we get to understand how Ignatius and Indigo are really struggling with the adventures they have experienced together. They are struggling to come to terms with it. They are the only two humans to meet gods, immortals and travel though the cosmos and time. So, when there is a spark of romance, is it love or just out of necessity, comfort and solace to ease their pain?

Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

They are all imaginary, I often create fantasy art, so I will sometimes create characters that I will then write about. It helps me visualize and then describe the character.

Of all the characters you have created, which is your favorite and why?

It’s difficult to choose. My favourite characters are Ignatius, Indigo and Adonai. All very different to each other. Probably because I can see different characteristics of myself in them. But if I had to choose, I would say Indigo. Firstly, I just love the unusual name, Indigo Gemstone. It’s a name I had kicking around in my head for years before I started writing. But she is fierce and independent, intuitive and likes to get the job done. But I would say Shadowslayers is really her story.

What character in your book are you least likely to get along with?

There are several. In the trilogy there are some god-like beings called the Celestials. I think they are all very arrogant and pompous, having risen above their station.

What would the main character in your book have to say about you?

There are obviously two main characters, Ignatius and Indigo. I think they would easily recognise the traits they have in me. So, I think we would all get along fine!

Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?

This is a trilogy, so each book is connected. Shadowslayers is the second book, so they are all connected and the story continues. However, I think each book can be read as a standalone.

Colin was born in Coventry and worked in the automotive industry for over twenty years before becoming an Engineering teacher. Obtaining his first library card at the age of thirteen, he became an avid reader of Fantasy and the mysteries of the Universe. He has an inbuilt curiosity for lost knowledge and ancient texts that may help to unlock the secrets of consciousness and the universe. Living in Oxford for many years, he has now moved back to his home county of Warwickshire where he enjoys creating and working with his wife on their garden in which he writes and entertains their two grandsons. He has always been an artist and writer and is inspired by the worlds created by Robert E Howard and Michael Moorcock, with the artwork of Frank Frazetta.

At first I thought it was another nightmare.

My sleep had been plagued by them thanks to one of the worst days of my life being closely followed by a full bottle of wine and way too many pre-packaged snack cakes.

But then I came to full alertness and realized that no, there actually was an enormous man staring down at me.

And holding a bat.

Heart rocketing around my chest and hands shaking with adrenaline, I flung the covers back and scrambled to the other side of the bed, sliding off it and attempting to flee for my life from my would-be murderer.

Unfortunately, my left foot was still caught up in the blanket.

When I tried to run toward the attached bathroom, it tripped me.

As I fell forward, my forehead hit the door frame with a loud thwak, and I ricocheted back, landing hard on my butt.

There was movement in my peripheral vision as the intruder ran around the end of the bed, reaching me before I even had time to react.

This was it. Not only was I going to die on my un-wedding night, I would look grotesque in my casket with a purple, misshapen forehead and chocolate in my teeth.

“Rosie.”

The deep male voice repeated my name, causing me to look up.

“Rosie, it’s me. Presley Lowe. It’s okay, I’m not going to hurt you.”

He knelt beside me, removing my palm from my forehead. “Are you okay? Let me see it.”

Was I already dead?

Maybe that blow to the head had been harder than I realized.

But no, angels probably didn’t welcome you to the pearly gates with a baseball bat in hand—at least I hoped not.

“Presley?” I blinked at him several times. “Are you real? Or wait… is this… Hell?”

Of all people to see me at what was perhaps the lowest moment of my entire life, did it really have to be Presley Lowe?

The guy I’d swooned over pretty much every day of high school, who’d finally noticed me in our senior year and had given me the most blissful three weeks of my young life.

The same guy who’d casually ended it and then crushed my soul by referring to me as a “flaky theater freak” in front of all his cool jock friends.

And now I’d gone and proved every word of that label.

Again.

He chuckled. “I’m real, but thanks for the flattering assumption. How’s your head? Any double vision or nausea?”

My hand went back to my face, probing my forehead, which hurt like hell, even though I was apparently not in the underworld.

What was he even doing here?

“Um… no. There’s only one of you,” I said.

I studied Presley’s handsome face, fighting a combination of hangover brain fog and sleep inertia—with a little head trauma thrown in for good measure.

“Why are you here?” I asked. “Did Wilder send you with my luggage?”

His head jerked back, and his mouth quirked in a perplexed expression.

“What? No, I’m here because this is my house, my bedroom. Why are you here?”

The fog cleared entirely as I realized what had happened.

“Oh my God, I’m so sorry,” I sputtered. “When Wilder said the house was unoccupied right now and that it was a family property, I thought it was like a vacation place or something. He didn’t tell me you lived here.”

Presley nodded, his own expression clearing. “Wilder let you in.”

“I had surgery a few days ago, and I’ve been staying at my parents’ house,” he explained. “Wilder probably didn’t tell you it was my place because he didn’t want you to worry about anything, and knowing him, he had a good reason for sending you here. Want to tell me what’s going on?”

“Not… particularly.”

I didn’t want to be in his presence—and look at that ridiculously gorgeous face, which had somehow gotten even more attractive over the years—a minute longer than necessary.

Getting to my feet, I staggered for a moment, trying to get my balance, before I began searching the floor for my belongings.

Presley reached out to steady me, placing a big hand on my shoulder. The warmth of it raised goosebumps all over my body.

“Go slow,” he advised. “You hit your head pretty hard there. In fact, you should probably sit down.”

Mortification heated my skin to scalding when I looked down at his hand on my bare arm and realized all I had on was the fancy bra and panties set I’d worn under my discarded wedding gown.

No wonder Presley was watching me so closely.
