Interview with SARAH HAWTHORN

What is your favorite part of the book?

Omigosh, that’s a hard question. Love. Camera. Action was such a passion project for me, and I loved writing every piece of it. The characters were so much fun to write! But I think my favorite part was using the story arcs of famous classic old movies to inform the chapter narratives. Lazing on the sofa watching countless movies all in the name of research was absorbing and then finding a film that really worked for my storyline was thrilling, too.

Does your book have a lesson? Moral?

I think the takeaway is that no matter what your age, or the hurdles you’re encountering, there’s always opportunity for a second chance at happiness – you’ve just got to be prepared to step outside your comfort zone and go looking.

Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

I make up all my characters. It’s easier. You can’t offend anyone, and there’s so much scope to say and do things one would never dare in real life. Although having said that, I’m certain each one has little bits of many people who’ve passed through my life.

Of all the characters you have created, which is your favorite and why?

I adore Petronella. She’s sassy, tactless and tells it like it is, yet has a good heart hidden under her brash exterior. She was tremendous to write, and so much fun giving her some of the best lines in the book.

What character in your book are you least likely to get along with?

I don’t think I would find much in common with Nancy – the wife of Jock the vet. She’s such a sour puss and complainer, I’d get fed up with her whining and doubtless be unable to stop myself lecturing her. And of course Nancy would find some bitchy ways to get back at me and make my life miserable.

What would the main character in your book have to say about you?

I suspect Faith would be delighted that I’m an author, and no doubt she’d graciously offer herself – as a great favor to me – as the subject for a biography.

Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?

My books are all stand alone titles. But I’d never rule out writing a sequel, or featuring character/s in another novel.

Chapter 1

Cozumel Mexico

Thursday, November 22, 2018

8:56 AM

The black mega yacht waited beyond Cozumel’s harbor mouth, a dark predator lurking in sunlit waters. Cruise ships gleamed at the pier, fishing boats slipped out toward the open sea, but this vessel did not belong. Sleek, silent, and perfectly placed in deeper water, it radiated intent.

At the bow rail, a man in a white Panama hat with a dark band stood with military stillness, his weathered hands gripping the binoculars trained on the harbor. A gold watch caught the light as he lifted his wrist to check the time.

A striking young woman approached in a sheer white cover-up over her swimsuit, her smile as rehearsed as the silver tray she carried. She might have been a model from one of the glossy magazines scattered in the salon, another prop in the theater of wealth the man commanded.

Ice clinking, he took the drink without a glance, eyes locked on the port, as if even beauty and luxury were beneath his notice.

“Sir,” a subordinate murmured, appearing at his shoulder, “the Americans arrived last evening. Right on schedule.”

The binoculars never wavered.

“Our marine park contact confirmed they requested to dive La Sombra.” The man paused, then continued in his Caribbean accent, “We’ve been tracking them since they arrived. Sullivan—the professor, the tall one. His Smithsonian curator fiancée. And his fellow former SEAL friend. Our hacker says he’s been digging into the Del Rio.

Through the lenses, he watched three figures board the Maria Elena—a tall, blond man helping the athletic woman with her gear, the muscular Black man arranging air tanks with quiet efficiency.

“Possibly lethal. High profile,” he noted. “We should keep this out of the media if we can. Let them dive.” He lowered the binoculars, his eyes tracking the dive boat pulling from the pier. “But if they become a problem...history will bury them too.”

Review Tour + #Giveaway: Scenes From a Song by Susan Sloate @Susan_Sloate @GoddessFish

SCENES FROM THE SONG

Susan Sloate

GENRE: Drama

Blurb:

On Halloween Eve, 1961, in his dingy Bronx walkup apartment, seventeen-year-old Jimmy Welton hears the opening notes of a song in his head. Jimmy’s still mourning his firefighter father, who taught him to play the guitar but recently died in a house fire, leaving his family destitute. Jimmy takes this song, about all he misses from his life now, to the New York amusement park where he works after school. There, he meets Mark Morgan, a rebellious teen with his own band, who eventually invites Jimmy to join them. And the rest is rock'n roll history...

Their band, The GooseBumps, become a worldwide phenomenon, and the songs they write and sing together become the backbone of rock musical history. And the song Jimmy first heard on Halloween, "Wrapped in Gauze", becomes the song that not only comforts him in that terrible time but also comforts others: Victoria, recently divorced and dealing with an out-of-nowhere family tragedy; Carolyn, whose final flippant words to someone in pain can't be taken back; and Jack, battling back from unimaginable loss with the help of his cheeky therapist and a song he thinks he hates.

SCENES FROM A SONG is the story of a song that makes us smile, that breaks our hearts, that stays with us forever, and the very special band that started it all.

Excerpt:

Jimmy hesitated for a moment, then took a good slug and felt it burn down into his stomach. Only then would he trust him-self to strum the first chords of “Bawk Bawk”. He’d written it in a sardonic mood one day, when he heard Debby playing “The Twist” on her record player and wanted to make fun of it. It had never occurred to him he’d end up playing it for a bunch of guys in a seedy bar after midnight.

Jimmy took a deep breath and launched into the song, speaking as well as singing it. After he’d written it, he’d realized he could even dance it a little, too, and he made gestures as well:

Imitating a chicken, clicking his heels together, clapping his hands. His father had told him he was a natural showman, so he gave it his all.

When he began to ham it up in the dance part, the boys be-gan to laugh, and they laughed right through to the end. Jimmy finished with the high whistle he’d learned the previous summer, and a final click of his heels before bowing to them.

Mark, Kellen and Hammy applauded enthusiastically, and Mick, who’d come back to see if they wanted another round, said to him, “Terrific, fella. Funniest thing I’ve seen since ‘The Ed Sullivan Show’. You a comic?”

Are you kidding? He’s a musician!” Mark roared. “A great musician! And ‘Bawk Bawk’s a number-one hit if ever I heard one!”

He jumped onto the floor and imitated Jimmy, clicking his heels together, arms flailing like a chicken, and making the ‘bawk bawk’ sound. In a minute, Hammy and Kellen were following him.

Play it again, Jimmy!” Mark shouted. “So we can dance it this time!”

My Review:

Scenes From a Song commenced on Halloween Eve in 1961 as Jimmy prepares for his role at a New York amusement park. He listens to a tune on the radio that lingers in his mind. After the passing of his firefighter father, Jimmy, his younger sister, and their mother have relocated to a new apartment.

To support his mother, Jimmy accepted a position at the park. One evening, he encounters Mark and his band, who have just begun performing at the park. Mark quickly becomes a part of their band, and they experience an instant rise to fame with the songs they compose and perform.

Scenes From a Song is a touching tale that will resonate with you for years to come. It’s akin to a melody that gets lodged in your thoughts. The narrative unfolds the journey of Mark, Jimmy, and their band as they navigate the music industry and achieve stardom.

Scenes From a Song is an incredibly engaging read that kept me captivated from the very first page to the last as I accompanied Jimmy on his adventure.

I strongly suggest you give Scenes From a Song a chance. Pick up a copy today!
