An Interview with Karissa Laurel

What inspired you to write Heir of Thunder?

When the song “Viva la Vida” by Colplay came out years ago, I immediately fell in love with the song and it gave me instant ideas about a character who once had a kingdom, but lost it. Right away I asked myself: Who is this character and what could have happened to make him or her loose his or her kingdom? And what is she doing about it, now? Those questions eventually evolved into Heir of Thunder.

When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

I have always read voraciously, and I enjoyed writing stories and essays all through my school years. Occasionally I wrote a single scene or a bit of dialogue, but I never developed those bits into an entire book. I never considered taking it seriously until around 2007 when a YA book series was becoming super popular. I remember reading those books and thinking: Hey, I could do this. So I tried writing a book just to see if I could complete something from beginning to end. When I had finished that goal, I tried writing another. Those books never went anywhere except into my hope chest, but it proved I could do the hardest part: starting and finishing a novel.

What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

I remember my mom reading to me at bedtime until I was old enough to read on my own. There’s a recording of me as a little kid “reading” to her, but I had mostly just memorized the book (It was “Donald Duck and the Witch Next Door”) and I was reciting it from memory. That’s how reading begins, though, if you think about it. I can’t say at what age I started reading on my own, but it was probably around four or five.

What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

I’m open to reading anything, generally. However, it should be no surprise that my favorite books tend to be ones with a fantastical element. Urban Fantasy, Epic Fantasy, Science Fiction, Magical Realism, etc. Like most people, I read to escape, and I like to escape into worlds where things can happen that can’t happen in real life. I get enough real life every day.

          What is your favorite book?

Picking one favorite book is like asking a mother to pick her favorite child, but to name a few... A Winter’s Tale by Mark Helprin; Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling; The Golden Compass series by Phillip Pullman; American Gods by Neil Gaiman; The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood; The Princess Bride by William Goldman; The Lonesome Gods by Louis L’Amore.

You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

Again, picking one is nearly impossible, but I’ll let it be a tie between Neil Gaiman and Margaret Atwood. They are my personal golden standard: The masters of craft to whom I always hold myself accountable, in my own mind. When I read their books, I feel like they’ve managed to transcend something as mundane as writing and they are making a kind of real world magic of their own.

If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

I really enjoy reading (and writing) historical novels, but I honestly have no wish to go to the past. Women and minorities were often mistreated. Medical care was poor. People were generally uneducated, and if you weren’t born into money, life was hard. I really, really like hot water at the turn of the knob, air conditioning, microwaves, and good pills for headaches and cramps. I’m spoiled! If I time travelled, I’d prefer to go to the future in hopes that things are better—that human rights have improved; health care and quality of life has improved; and I want that flying car the books and movies have been promising me all these years. Which begs the question... why don’t I write more sci-fi?

When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

It totally depends! (I bet you guessed that was what I would say). Sometimes the words flow and the plot comes and everything just works. Sometimes I can’t get a word on the paper to save my life. Some days it’s that I’m just not in the mood, and sometimes it’s because I don’t know what’s supposed to happen next. But the secret to finishing a project is to never admit defeat and accept that it’s okay to stop and think about the book without actually putting down words. Thinking about what words to write next counts as writing, too.

Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

If you don’t count my kid, who can get a little fuzzy when he doesn’t take enough showers, then I have only one. Her name is Bonnie and she is a husky mix. I’m not sure what she’s mixed with—we think it might be a German shepherd—but she fabulous blue eyes and she howls when she gets excited like huskies do. She also sheds enough fur on a weekly basis to make multiple clones of herself.

What is your ""to die for"", favorite food/foods to eat?

In a previous career, I was a cook and a caterer, so I can make most anything I put my mind to. My favorite things to eat when I go out are things I wouldn’t dare make or know I couldn’t make well, and that tends to be dishes from foreign countries. I adore Indian and Thai food, but I leave it up to the professionals to cook those meals.  Another thing that I tend to leave to the professionals is pizza. I could eat pizza every day, probably. In my house, we are very snooty about our pizza and usually don’t order it from a chain restaurant. Instead we get it from a little mom and pop place near my house called La Roma’s. It’s the best in town, in our opinions.

Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Being an author is not a one-size-fits all career, and there is no single right way to do it. Every author’s path will have some similar and recognizable stepping stones, but each path will take its own unique direction. Write a lot. Read a lot (a whole, whole lot!). Don’t think it’s going to happen overnight. Accept criticism and rejection (if you go down a path that does not include criticism and rejection, then you probably aren’t doing it right). Keep trying to get better. Never give up.

EXCERPT:

“This is unbelievable,” chirped Zoe as Spark walked up and gave Lyssa a high-five after the show.
“It’s a meat market, for sure. A man buffet for the taking,” Serene snapped back, watching the many submissives behaving so perfectly for their pleasures.
“So, what’s your story, Buttercup?” Serene inquired, eying Iris. Before Iris could respond, the entire cabaret felt a wave of silence engulf them as someone rivaling Sal stood by the entryway by Mullins.
“Who is that?” Serene whispered to Zoe.
“That is buffet delivery,” Kate announced as she rose up, striding intently towards Mullins and Mitch.
Engrossed in Kate’s next move, Serene focused her attention to Iris. “Who does it for you?”
Your hot Italian boy.
“I don’t know. I married my husband at eighteen. I never knew anything else.”
Serene brushed her arm against Iris. “Stop being so curious. And go find your truth, Buttercup. Be an active participant in your life.”
A shiver went down her spine as Serene stayed in her space long enough to make her uncomfortable. “You just want to spank me,” Iris contemptuously retorted.
Cackling softly, Serene lifted a brow, “Oh you are alive! And no.” She caught her eyes and countered, “I prefer whips… long, painful ones.”
Serene’s flirtatious words dripped like sex off the tip of her tongue onto Iris. “Sal is coming home with me tonight. If you want to come, here is my number. Send me a text at eleven. No one will know. The offer is good for tonight only.”
Zoe blinked at Iris subtly acquiescing that Serene inviting initiates home broke protocol. Initiates were to be seen and not touched, but she was Mistress Serene and always found a way to break, bend, contort, or render helpless the rules. An invitation from Serene—with or without Sal—proved to be a highly coveted piece in the Juliet puzzle.
The lights dimmed again, and a pulsing, gyrating beat came on as Kate returned to the table. Serene snapped, “What the hell did you just do?”
“Just taking care of business,” Kate quipped. “Knocking the head off the King, I suppose.”
“You have no clue what you have done,” Serene fumed.
The sexy young man appeared on stage, in his ripped jeans, t-shirt, and well-worn work boots. He stood stoic, deer in the headlights. The undulating roar soared to the stage from the rowdy crowd of women. Serene couldn’t believe Kate convinced Mitch to get up on stage. She whispered to Zoe, “This place is about to get insane if he does it.”
“Oh, he’s gonna do it,” Kate spouted off confident of her new toy.
“I don’t know. He’s been still at least thirty-seconds,” Serene egged on with fighting words.
“He’ll do it,” Kate challenged. The music stopped abruptly and the lights fell dark again, leaving the audience full of boo’s. The blaring music of came on with the spotlight on his back. Shirtless, Mitch displayed several large tattoos and some scars.
“He’s terrified, Kate,” Serene warned. “He’s shaking for fucks sake.”
“He may be, but he has this. Trust me. You don’t do three tours in Afghanistan and not be able to do this,” Kate argued.
At the bar, Sal scoped out the women conspiring his future. He didn’t believe things could get any worse. He and Kate were done which also meant he and Serene were done. There was no relationship. There was no Mistress/slave. There was not even a sandwich over the evening news. So anywhere he could end up would not be any more abominable than his current situation.
Sal noticed Iris sitting with Serene, and he couldn’t help remembering how close he had come to making love to her. While he couldn’t understand why, Sal knew Iris was his game changer, but even she didn’t want to play with him.
Slamming his fifth whiskey, Sal couldn’t believe how the women, his legion of his fanatical followers, flirted with Mitch Daniels. The front-rowers drooled, going crazy over a spot that should be his. Sal couldn’t take being one-upped, so he did the only thing his bad boy knew he could get away with. Sprinting through the audience, Sal hopped up onto the stage.
Sal yelled, “I want to dance!”
“Oh god,” Kate mumbled, flabbergasted.
“You brought this on. He’s lives off the fuel of the crowd. Let him burn off the energy,” Serene admonished, stomping off to the bar with Zoe following. Torn between what she wanted to do, follow Zoe or stay with Kate, Iris upheld her obligation to friendship. Choosing the former, Iris glared condescendingly at Kate as she strutted off.
“Where are you going?” Kate pleaded, grasping Serene’s arm.
She jerked back quick, yanking Kate. Her ice blue eyes menacing, Serene sassed, “I’m going to clean up your fucking mess yet again. And while I am at it, you should stop playing head games with Sal. Let him go, Kate. Final and last warning. Because if you fuck with him one more time, I swear to God it will be the last thing you do at Juliet.”
Shaking his ass, Sal spun at the screaming women. He mouthed the words to the song at them, touching their fingertips all along the front row. Blowing kisses to them, they were clinging to Sal like horny groupies.
“Looks like the prize stallion broke out of his stall,” Zoe snickered to Iris.
Before Serene could get over to stop him, Sal made his way back to the DJ and changed the music to his standard Nine Inch Nails. And that could only mean one thing. The rowdy boy was about to tank the entire Quad-F.
“Fuck!” Serene roared.
To say a dance battle ensued would be incorrect, more of an up-the-ante-strip-a-thon. As soon as Sal got on stage he ripped his shirt off, tossing it at the groupies. He wasn’t scheduled to perform tonight, but his competitive nature took hold at whatever price he would have to endure.
Word rampantly spread Sal had taken to the stage, drawing people to the cabaret for his impromptu performance like a syringe to a vial, sucking each and every one of them into his world. No one could pack a house like Sal, and tonight was no exception. It didn’t matter who else inhabited the stage.

Sal Raniero was.

Tristan finished reading his lines. “Hey, Juliet, it’s your turn.” He smirked.
“Oh, right.” She looked down at her book. “‘O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art though Romeo.'” She tried to copy his apathetic style of reading and was secretly overjoyed when he laughed at her.
“I get it, I sounded like an idiot.” She just continued giving him the same silent treatment he had given her. “Okay, here’s the truth, Kira. We can’t talk here, and we shouldn’t even be talking now, or maybe ever.”
“You told me that already.” She stopped reading.
“Yet, you seem to have trouble understanding it. English is your first language, right?” She rolled her eyes at the joke. “Like I said before, we just can’t ever be.”
“I understand what you’re saying, but I also know you don’t mean it.” She leaned closer to him to prevent from being overheard.
“I do,” he said, forcing the point.
“Oh really?” she tried to push him now. “It didn’t seem that way when you kissed me.”
“Kira, forget that ever happened, okay?”
“Or what? You don’t scare me.”
“I should,” he said and shot Kira a lethal look.
His eyes changed color to the lightest blue she could imagine, and they held her captive. Not in the romantic way, but as though she were a prisoner held paralyzed. His eyes were ice cold, making her shiver as though she had been dropped in an arctic pool, and slowly his pupils began to expand, overtaking his irises.
Kira was scared, but more than that, she felt like he knew it and didn’t care. Try as she might, she couldn’t look away—completely stuck. Slowly, a feeling of warmth spread to her hands, burning hot, a sense of power that fought the fear tightening her stomach in knots.
Whipping her gaze to the floor, Kira breathed heavy as she finally broke his stare. Her fingertips still tingled with the heat that had coursed through her, allowing her to break his gaze. Kira leaned back against her chair, away from him, and touched her fingers to her cheek.
They burned into her skin.
“What the hell was that?” she asked unsteadily, still not looking up. The heat emanating from her hand absorbed all of Kira’s thoughts.
“Me,” he said with the venom gone from his voice. She looked at him again and caught the unbearably sad expression in his eyes before he looked away.
Or me? she thought, feeling the warmth finally ebb.

THE PRINCE & THE PLAYER

Zelda Wilder
We’ve been walking since we got our drinks, and now we’re at the back entrance to the casino. He leads me out the ornate doors onto a long terrace overlooking the sea. The moon is just rising, touching the water with silvery tips. It’s gorgeous.
“You hate every movie,” he says.
“I do not. I just have a low tolerance for crap.”
Cal sits on the stone railing in front of me, and his warm hands cover the exposed skin on my hips as he pulls me close to his body.
“Where did you acquire such a refined taste in film?” He leans forward to kiss the side of my neck, and that little fish in my middle is flipping all over the place.
“Cal…” Setting my drink down, I push against his shoulders.
He only tightens his hold. “I’m not letting you go, so stop struggling. Now answer my question.”
My entire body is on fire. “My parents loved classic films. It’s where Ava…” Shit! “I mean, um… It’s why Ava and I became friends.”
“You have parents in common?” Another burning kiss.
“Our parents were a lot alike.”
“Interesting,” he murmurs, moving higher into my hair. My knees go liquid, and I almost collapse. “You smell delicious.”
His kisses travel to my jaw. Somehow I manage to bend my elbows and push myself out of his arms.
“Seriously, Cal, we’re not doing this.”
“Why the devil not? We did a damn good job of it last night.”
“I’d had too much champagne last night.”
His hazel eyes flash. “I’m calling bullshit on that, Miss Benedict, you were not drunk last night.”
I start to walk away, but he’s right behind me, catching my arm. “Wait. I’m sorry. Don’t go. Let’s talk some more.”
It’s a mistake. I know it with every fiber of my being, but I don’t leave. “It’s really beautiful here. I love the water.”
“We can walk down to the shore and look for ghost crabs,” he says, sliding my hair off my cheek with his finger. “If you twist your ankle, I’ll carry you this time.”
“Cal—” My argument is lost in his mouth covering mine.
He kisses me the way he always does, passionate and consuming. Our lips part, his tongue finds mine, and my core floods with heat. Warm hands slide over my bare back, dipping lower, into the back of my dress. I push my fingers into his hair and pull him closer to me. Oh, god, I should stop this, but I want it so much.
“I love this dress,” he murmurs against my cheek, and pleasure snakes up my thighs along with his fingers.
He’s lifting my skirt, making his way to the center. I hold my breath, waiting for him to discover…
“Fuck me,” he hisses, and our eyes lock. That naughty grin splits his cheeks. “Somebody forgot her panties tonight.”
Laughter explodes from my lips, and I drop my forehead against his shoulder. “Oh my god,” I groan as his finger slides over my clit, making me jump. “Oh, god, Cal.” I’m not arguing anymore, I’m begging.
“You don’t have to beg, beautiful, I’ll make you come.” Husky words, lost in our mouths as he kisses me again, deeper, taking what he wants. It’s what we both want.

SYLVIE
O.M.G.
I swear his eyes grazed mine before they dismissed me because I’m not famous. Not my sister. But gosh, I want to change his mind. Have to.
I do a quick scan to test my conclusions, but no, only the old cougar with the scandalous miniskirt could have been the other recipient of that smoldering message. Maybe she… no. No! I know nothing about that overload of hotness except he doesn’t need a desperate grandmother to feed his ego. Okay, I don’t know that. Sometimes you just have to have faith, right?
I can’t tell if he wants me to approach or stay the hell away, but I don’t have a choice when the paralysis wears off and my bare legs start guiding me toward his loose-cut jeans. Jeans that hide… I blush. I don’t usually worry about what could be going on in a guy’s jeans.
Say something, Sylvie. And not about his pants.
“I like your guitar.” Ugh! WTH?! I might as well have said I liked his subscription to Time Magazine.
He just stares at me for a moment, and I’m praying that slight slip in his expression is because he didn’t hear me.
“Uh, thanks.”
He’s so not grateful for my praise, but I can’t stop now that I have his attention. I find myself rising on my toes, hoping the slim muscles in my toned thighs are making a pretty picture beneath my tiny shredded shorts. Yes, it’s December. It’s also the Bahamas at a resort that promised a buffet of hot rockers. Funny, I suddenly only notice one. And he needs to notice me.
“I’m Sylvie Drake,” I continue, even though I know that means nothing to him. “My sister is Holland Drake.”
I shoot a thumb toward the opposite corner where my dear sibling is… hanging on Luke. If Luke, then Casey. Thank you grade-nine Algebra, and I’m suddenly annoyed I never got that promised text from Holland. Then again, since my attention zeroed in on this inferno, I haven’t noticed much else. My phone could be replacing the moons of Jupiter with all its flashing and I wouldn’t know it.
“Hi, Sylvia.”
“Sylvie.”
His brows knit because that’s what he said, except he didn’t. Still, I don’t know how to correct him with him looking at me like that. Even slanted in confusion, I feel the intensity of those golden embers shaded by dark lashes. Darnit, I’m Sylvia. It’s fine. I can be Sylvia because he’s… my body doesn’t need words as it answers his piercing concentration with all kinds of adult stuff. Holland would kill me if she knew what was going through my head. So much worse than gin and tonics. So much tastier. Tastier? Too adult. The lady with the miniskirt thinks he’s “tasty.” I think he’s… crap. I suck at this. What would Holland say?
“What key are you playing in?”

Author Bio:

Born in the Land of the Midnight Sun, the author spent her early twenties making the world her playground. Southern Europe: Spain, Italy, Greece--Argentina: Buenos Aires, in particular. The United States finally kept her interest, and after half a decade in Los Angeles, she now lounges in the beautiful city of Savannah.
Sometimes, Sunniva writes with a paranormal twist (Shattering Halos, Stargazer, and Cat Love). At other times, it's contemporary (Pandora Wild Child, Leon's Way, Adrenaline Crush, Walking Heartbreak, and Dodging Trains, coming in late March 2016).
This author is the happiest when her characters let their emotions run off with them, shaping her stories in ways she never foresaw. She loves bad-boys and good-boys run amok, and like in real life, her goal is to keep the reader on her toes until the end of each story.

Alyson Santos:
I’m a writer, musician, and cat lover. I also have an alternative music obsession. Seriously, it's a real problem.
I write what needs to come out, whether it’s pain, tears, or laughter. I write people and relationships, about the beauty and horror of what we do to ourselves and each other. I write Love. Vengeance. Compassion. Cruelty. Trust. Betrayal. Forgiveness. Darkness, and the incredible way humans destroy and heal each other.
I like to eradicate barriers, refusing to be confined by the laws of physics or limitations of reality. I will befriend a vast population of possibilities and introduce them in ways that might surprise you.

“I guess that’s the thing about high school reunions, though. They make you snap a little.”

In the ten years since high school graduation, Maylee’s career, living arrangements, family, and especially her love life are at a standstill. When her twin brother, Mitch, falls for her high school enemy at their ten-year reunion, Maylee’s life is catapulted into chaos.

Maylee’s hatred for the blonde-haired Josephine isn’t the only thing she discovers at her reunion. Benson Drake, the introvert from high school, has matured into a sexy intellect. Now a writer and bartender, Benson’s grown into a man with a perfect balance of quirky wit and sex appeal. After a wardrobe malfunction, a spy mission gone wrong, and a dangerous cup of coffee, Maylee and Benson explore something they never even thought about during senior year. Along the way, they find out that reconnecting with the past can change you… or maybe just help you find your true self.

A high school English teacher, an author, and a fan of anything pink and/or glittery, Lindsay's the English teacher cliché; she love cats, reading, Shakespeare, and Poe.

She currently lives in her hometown with her husband, Chad (her junior high sweetheart); their cats, Arya, Amelia, Alice, and Bob; and their Mastiff, Henry.

Lindsay's goal with her writing is to show the power of love and the beauty of life while also instilling a true sense of realism in her work. Some reviewers have noted that her books are not the “typical romance.” With her novels coming from a place of honesty, Lindsay examines the difficult questions, looks at the tough emotions, and paints the pictures that are sometimes difficult to look at. She wants her fiction to resonate with readers as realistic, poetic, and powerful. Lindsay wants women readers to be able to say, “I see myself in that novel.” She wants to speak to the modern woman’s experience while also bringing a twist of something new and exciting. Her aim is for readers to say, “That could happen,” or “I feel like the characters are real.” That’s how she knows she's done her job.

Lindsay's hope is that by becoming a published author, she can inspire some of her students and other aspiring writers to pursue their own passions. She wants them to see that any dream can be attained and publishing a novel isn’t out of the realm of possibility.
