Blurb:
A
gothic vampire epic where dark fantasy meets science fiction —
descend into an empire where death is only the beginning…
Beneath
the surface of the mortal world lies a domain of eternal night—an
empire of vampires built on terror, brutality, and fear. Here, the
Great Houses of the Underworld wield science as sorcery, keep
humanity in chains, and turn death itself into pure spectacle.
From
this labyrinth of shadows awakens Kane, a man with no memory and no
past—only pain, a broken body, and a new life as a despised vampire
Convert.
But
he is not alone…
Watching
from the darkness is Six, one of the empire's dreaded terror
soldiers. Her interests in him are unknown, her motives even less so.
Yet even in a world of monsters, the dread she inspires is
palpable.
Hated on sight for what he is, Kane is thrown
into the Blood Games—a brutal arena where Bloodletters fight to the
death for the entertainment of all. With each fight, he claws back
pieces of the life stolen from him.
But something else
lurks in his past: nightmares of a red-eyed machine and distant,
inhuman screams. Dragged ever deeper into the depths of this dark
world, Kane begins to learn that some secrets are best left
forgotten.
For down in the depths where the Vault doors
keep…
Things
lie waiting…
Things don't sleep…

My Review:
Empire of Blood is the phenomenal first book in Christopher Kilgore’s planned dark sci-fi vampire trilogy and offers a wonderful introduction to the series. I was continuously awestruck as the book peeled back the layers of this world, constantly surprising me with fascinating details about the strict Great Houses and how their society functions. I am thrilled by the incredible amount of work that went into creating such a unique universe. The worldbuilding is deeply immersive, introducing us to a dark hierarchy of vampires, converts, and enslaved humans. Honestly, the descriptions here are among the best I have ever encountered.
The story takes us beneath the mortal realm into a domain of eternal night—an empire built on terror, brutality, and fear. In this underworld, the Great Houses wield science like sorcery, keeping humanity in chains and turning death into a pure spectacle. It instantly reminded me of the movie Gladiator. Converts are forced to fight in the Blood Games, a brutal arena where Bloodletters battle to the death for entertainment.
I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough, eager to see how the story would unfold. I also highly recommend checking out the author’s website, which features awesome extra lore and information. I am so glad I stumbled across this book and cannot wait to read the next installment. If you are a fan of dark vampire stories, grab a copy today—trust me, you won’t regret it!
