Book Tour + #Giveaway: No Straight Lines to the Stars by Ken Kisco @RABTBookTours

An Unlikely Journey from Lifeguard Tower to Launchpad

Narrative Nonfiction/Inspirational

Date Published: August 4th, 2026

Publisher: Acorn Publishing

No Straight Lines to the Stars is the inspiring true story of a young lifeguard who dared to believe his life could reach far beyond the horizon.

On the beaches of Southern California, Ken Kisco learned that preparation saves lives. From rip-current rescues to split-second emergencies, he discovered that courage is not the absence of fear, but the decision to act in spite of it. Those early lessons in resilience and composure pushed Ken to believe he could accomplish anything . . . including his lifelong dream of reaching the stars.

Through relentless perseverance and unwavering faith, Ken rose into the heart of America’s most advanced space and defense programs, contributing to human spaceflight initiatives and supporting groundbreaking technologies. His unusual start as a lifeguard helped advance his career, distinguishing him from his Air Force and Navy peers. Yet, his toughest challenges were personal—he faced deep disappointment when a space mission was canceled and learned lessons about trust and integrity from a romance-turned-ruse.

Ken’s journey reveals that success is rarely linear. Setbacks became launchpads, adversity became refinement, and purpose became a compass. Part memoir, part inspiration, and part behind-the-scenes look at America’s quest for the stars, this is the unforgettable story of a man who proves that bold dreams, combined with grit and heart, can launch an ordinary life into an extraordinary one.

Interview with Ken Kisco

Author of No Straight Lines to the Stars

Do you have a routine or something you do to get you in the mood to write?

I don't have a strict writing routine. Before I begin, I usually spend a few quiet moments reflecting on the memories I want to share and the lessons they taught me. Since No Straight Lines to the Stars is based on real experiences, my goal is to relive those moments honestly and write from the heart.

Do you have a special song, drink, or food you enjoy while you are writing?

A good cup of coffee is usually all I need. I prefer a quiet environment where I can focus without distractions. Occasionally, I'll listen to soft instrumental music, but more often than not, it's the memories themselves that set the tone for my writing.

How do you know what to write?

For me, the story came first. I asked myself, "What experiences have shaped my life, and what lessons might encourage others?" Rather than simply recounting events, I wanted each chapter to offer a meaningful takeaway. If a story could inspire someone to persevere, dream bigger, or embrace life's unexpected turns, then I knew it belonged in the book.

What does a typical writing day look like for you?

I usually begin by reviewing what I wrote the previous day before adding anything new. Some days the words flow easily, while other days I spend more time refining a single paragraph than writing several pages.

Do you do anything special to celebrate after writing “the end”?

Finishing the manuscript was certainly a milestone, but I viewed it as the beginning of another journey. Editing, working with my publisher, reviewing cover designs, and preparing for publication became the next chapter. The real celebration will always be hearing from readers whose lives were touched by the story.

How long does it take you to write a book?

This memoir took several years to complete. Writing was only part of the process. I spent countless hours reflecting on experiences, verifying details, organizing the timeline, and refining each chapter to ensure the story flowed naturally while remaining authentic.

What is the most difficult part of writing a book?

The hardest part was deciding what to leave out. Life is filled with experiences, but not every story belongs in a book. My challenge was choosing the moments that best illustrated the central message of No Straight Lines to the Stars: that life's greatest opportunities often come from unexpected paths, and that perseverance can take us farther than we ever imagined.

Blurb:

An aquamarine pendant. An old photograph. Dolphins behaving strangely. A filmmaker murdered during Pirate Festival weekend.  My island paradise is officially having a bad week.

I’m Skye Marina, sharing a cottage on Seahorse Island with my bestie, Tessa. I’d rather collect shells, dance late into the night, or work beside a charming charter captain than get tangled up in another murder.

That changes when Cara Bennett trusts me with clues about her grandmother’s mysterious death during a 1996 expedition off Lovers Key. Then Cara is murdered, and walking away is no longer an option.

With my loyal poodle, Luna, retired forensic expert Candy Li, and my island friends, I chase clues through mangrove channels, marinas, beaches, and secrets hidden in the deep blue.

Ray Callahan’s reputation depends on the story Cara challenged, while investor Warren Pike resents her for reopening the expedition that ruined him.

Soon Cara’s murder, the long-ago expedition, and the troubled dolphins appear connected.

Now I must expose the killer before someone else is silenced and the island paradise I call home is damaged beyond repair.

My Review:

While looking through her grandfather’s old records, Cara Bennett finds something highly suspicious about her grandmother’s mysterious death during a 1996 expedition off Lovers Key. Desperate for answers, Cara contacts Skye Marina to help her uncover what really happened all those years ago. Believing someone is watching her, a paranoid Cara leaves the old documents in Skye’s hands for safe keeping.
Tragedy strikes the very next day when Cara is found dead. Someone clearly wants to keep the past buried, and Cara was getting too close to the truth. Armed with the records and joined by her loyal poodle, Luna, retired forensic expert Candy Li and her island friends, Skye sets out to solve Cara's murder. The author does a fantastic job of bringing the sun-drenched, atmospheric Florida coast to life, making the island community feel like a character in its own right.
Can Skye and her crew uncover the dark secrets of the past before someone else is silenced? The relentless pacing and clever twists kept me completely hooked, making this a true page-turner. I raced through the final chapters to see how all the puzzle pieces tied together!

I highly recommend Whispers of Lovers Key to all cozy mystery fans. Grab your copy today!

Adventures in Tub (Felix & Ninja, Book 1)

Upper Middle Grade

Date Published: 09-15-2026

Publisher: Oculus Print

Two orphan loners. One supernatural plague. When wood-eating zombies threaten their island, mismatched investigators Felix and Ninja must combine science and instinct to save Spinachi-before they're next.

ZOMBIE ZOO is Book 1 in a five-book middle grade adventure series for readers ages 8-13, blending paranormal mystery, zombies, unlikely friendship, and STEAM-powered problem-solving.

When 13-year-old aspiring naturalist Felix Fizzystyxx discovers that orphans at Wayward Amok Orphanage are transforming into wood-eating zombies, his quiet tree-fort observations are no longer enough. Someone has deliberately unleashed a strange plague on Tub's island town of Spinachi-and they're still out there.

To find a cure, Felix must team up with Ninja, a shadow-dwelling orphan who trusts her instincts and never backs down. Intense and razor-sharp, she notices what others overlook and lives up to her name as the island's most mysterious sleuth. With their eccentric mentor Doc Brunne compromised and the town's water supply contaminated by a glowing bioluminescent substance, the two mismatched investigators must combine scientific observation with sharp intuition to stop the outbreak before their island home is devoured.

Set on the fictional island of Tub, this fast-paced, humorous adventure naturally weaves in STEAM concepts-biology, chemistry, bioluminescence, water systems, pattern recognition, and the scientific method-within an age-appropriate supernatural mystery. Themes include unlikely friendship, identity, trust across differences, courage, and finding your voice when adults won't listen.

Featuring diverse protagonists, quirky humor, spooky-but-fun scares, and strong female and male leads. ZOMBIE ZOO is ideal for reluctant readers and fans of Max Brallier's The Last Kids on Earth, B.B. Alston's Amari and the Night Brothers, and Goosebumps. Comprehensive educator resources-including discussion guides, vocabulary lists, STEAM extension activities, and printable maps-support classroom use, library programming, book clubs, and make this title ideal for cross-curricular lessons bridging ELA, STEAM, and SEL.
