The Unwanted (Black Water Tales #2)
by JeanNicole Rivers
Genre: NA Horror/Psychological Thriller
Release date: March 31st 2016

Summary:

In the remote, eastern European town of Borslav there is St. Sebastian orphanage, a place where people discard their unwanted children. For the American, Blaire Baker, it’s the perfect place to volunteer her services. Paired with a cheerful volunteer nurse, Blaire is enthusiastic about the possibilities, but is quickly discouraged when she encounters the nefarious nature of the staff and the deplorable conditions of the facility and the children.

Upon arrival, one of the children informs Blaire, “There’s something in the basement.” It isn’t long before strange things begin happening, including Blaire’s flashbacks of the accident that killed her parents. The children soon suffer injuries that Blaire, first, fears may be the deeds of the callous workers but she soon thinks the abuse may originate from a source that is less than human, something unwanted.

The unwanted is coming but in order for Blaire to fight it, she must dig into St. Sebastian and herself in search of truth. Blaire wants nothing more than to help the children, but when she discovers the tragedy that happened in the basement and learns that the same evil forces are still at work, it will be Blaire who needs help…There’s something in the basement.

A Point in Time

If I could go back to one point in time it would be 1893, with a suitcase in hand, I would be walking up to the front door of 601-603 West 63rd Street, Chicago, IL, The World’s Fair Hotel. The World’s Fair Hotel, more famously known as the Murder Castle of H. H. Holmes was an enigmatic edifice constructed under Holmes’ demented direction. Made up of a plethora of confusing rooms, doors that opened to walls, trapdoors, bizarre hallways, soundproof rooms, staircases to nowhere, etc., the hotel served mostly to facilitate and hide Holmes’ murderous behavior. After capture Holmes admitted to 27 murders but it is suspected that he was responsible for hundreds, most taking place within the strange confines of his Chicago hotel.

While I am not fascinated by the atrocities that took place there, I do believe that walls have eyes and ears and I would be enthralled by the structure itself and all of the recollections and moods it contained. Floating through the halls, I’d slide my fingers along the moldings, in hopes of connecting with one of the wild, roaming spirits. I would study the wallpaper while contemplating the perverse mind of the man who inspired it all, a mind as dark and twisted as the hotel’s shadowy corridors. Through the window of my room I would watch the gray Chicago street and wonder if it’s previous guest had done the very same thing just before being lured to their demise. The victims themselves would be the center of my thoughts as well as what crooked twist of fate brought them into the path of a savage such as Holmes and his Murder Castle. It’s hard to imagine the people who walked into this beautiful, new hotel, hoping for a fantastic stay, but getting a truly heinous and deadly experience. It’s like what the characters in my book Black Water Tales: The Unwanted encounter when they first arrive at St. Sebastian orphanage. By all appearances, St. Sebastian is a safe refuge for the unwanted that come to inhabit it, but those crossing the threshold have no idea about the depths of the depravity that await them just inside.

Excerpt from SINGLE MALT

There was a scraping sound and when next Walker spoke, he was closer, his hot breath coasting across Aidan’s neck. “Why don’t you show me some of these dance moves?”

Aidan whipped his head around, bringing them nose-to-nose. “Don’t be ridiculous.”

“I’m serious.” Walker grinned, the temptation and levity in his bright blue eyes chasing away the sorrow of the day, of the past eight months. “Impress me,” he said, using Aidan’s own words against him.

“Whiskey,” he warned, low and tight, fighting his instincts.

“Come on, it’s just us here.”

Glancing over his shoulder, Aidan confirmed the other couple was gone, Roy was nowhere to be seen, and the only two waiters left sat folding napkins in the private room.

Walker, standing between their stools, inched closer and laid his hand over Aidan’s again. “Dance with me, Talley.”

Hooked, the offered comfort reeled Aidan in. Tugging his hand, Walker pulled him off the stool and into his arms. As they swayed gently to the music, it wasn’t dancing with Isabella Aidan remembered but dancing with Gabe after their wedding. Held in Walker’s arms, knowing what he did now about his partner’s orientation, Aidan allowed himself to notice the physical similarities between Walker and his husband. Both accomplished athletes, they were bigger and stronger than him, larger in height and mass. He liked being surrounded in a bigger man’s warmth. He also liked dominating that when he had a mind to. And Walker was one hell of a specimen.

Relaxing into the embrace, Aidan coasted the hand not in Walker’s up his cut biceps, over his broad shoulder, and around to his back where rock-hard delts stood out beneath the rough chambray. Closing the inches between them, he pressed his chest to Walker’s and bit back a moan at finding the front of him as warm and firm as the back.

Walker dipped his chin, his stubbled jaw nuzzling Aidan’s temple. “Something tells me this isn’t how you danced with Isabella.”

“No, it’s not.” He breathed deep, fighting not to melt into his partner’s embrace. Everything about the moment enticed him to bury his face in Walker’s neck and let go—that deep molasses voice, the tempting cologne, a warm embrace after months of cold loneliness.

Coming May 1, 2017

CASK STRENGTH (Agents Irish & Whiskey):

Professionally, the FBI team of Aidan "Irish" Talley and Jameson "Whiskey" Walker is as good as it gets, closing cases faster than any team at the Bureau. Personally, it’s a different story. Aidan’s feelings for Jamie scare the hell out of him: he won’t risk losing another love no matter how heart-tripping the intimacy between them. And loss is a grim reality with the terrorist Renaud still on their trail, leaving a pile of bodies in his wake.

Going undercover on a new case gets them out of town and off the killer's radar. They're assigned to investigate an identity theft ring involving a college basketball team in Jamie's home state, where Jamie's past makes him perfect for the role of coach. But returning to the court brings more than old memories.

As secrets and shocking betrayals abound, none may be more dangerous than the one Jamie’s been keeping: a secret about the death of Aidan’s husband that could blow his partner's world apart and destroy forever the fragile bonds of trust and love building between them.

“Stop right here,” Nora Bradford raised her voice so the driver could hear her over the engine’s rumble. The giant tractor’s snow treads ground to a halt behind Glacier Ridge Lodge.
Nora peered through the cab’s dirty windows. Her former firm’s chartered yacht was still anchored in the icy water of Amity Bay, Antarctica. She wasn’t sure if that was good or bad.
“You sure you don’t want me to drive you down to the boat?” Charlie, the driver, who brought Nora back to Amity Bay from McMurdo Station, leaned over, concern in his voice. “It’s a long walk with all your stuff.”
“No!” Nora whipped around in her cramped seat as much as her bulky red parka allowed, and grabbed her suitcase. Tired as she was, the thing seemed to weigh a ton, but she managed to hoist it into her lap. “It’s two in the morning and everyone’s asleep.  I’ll be fine up here, and in the morning, I’ll call down for help if I need it.”
The driver hesitated, and she sensed he didn’t like the idea of dropping her off at an empty building in the dead of night. During the three hour drive, she’d gotten to know him a bit. Charlie seemed like a decent guy.
                Unlike some.
“You sure?” Charlie said, frowning. “Don’t forget, Antarctica ain’t exactly San Francisco.”
“Really? I hadn’t noticed.” Immediately, she regretted her sarcasm. Taking her problems out on others solved nothing, and this poor guy didn’t deserve to have his head bitten off. The stress of the last few days and the seriousness of what she was about to do were clearly getting to her. Best to get on with it.
You don’t have to do this. There’s still time to change your mind.
The calm voice of her more rational self intruded, just as it had when she’d hatched this plan an hour ago. Once more she shoved it from her thoughts.
“Really, I’ll be fine.” She tipped her chin and blinked quickly to clear the fresh tears. She gave a shaky laugh. “I designed this place. It’s only natural I’d want to spend one last night here. And you need to get back to McMurdo, so you don’t miss your flight home.”
“True,” Charlie agreed. “Hey, you have a good trip back to San Fran.”
Nora sniffed. “Right. And you have a good trip back to the States, too. Cleveland, right?”
“Yep. It’ll be good to get home.”
For Charlie, who had something to go back to, it probably was good. Nora slid down from the cab, dragging her suitcase behind her.
Inside, the lodge was quiet and empty, just as she’d hoped. She bustled through the first floor then up the stairs, making as little noise as possible, alert for anyone who might have slept here after last night’s Dedication Gala. When she safely reached the third floor, she released a sigh. For now, she was alone. But there was no time to waste.
Quickly, she dashed to an out-the-way linen closet—-one that locked-- and stashed her belongings on an upper shelf. Then she flew into action, racing though the lodge, gathering up batteries, light bulbs, tissue, soap. Canned food from the pantry. Vegetable seeds for the hydroponic greenhouse. Frozen meat, cheese and wine. Anything she could use during the long, dark Antarctic winter.
In the kitchen, she found trays of party leftovers. Adrenaline had stolen her appetite, but she forced herself to gorge on an impromptu breakfast of imported cheeses and bacon-wrapped shrimp. She carefully rewrapped what was left, as someone from the ship was obviously coming back for it, and retreated upstairs.
Weak sunshine shone down through the third floor skylights, as Nora stood before the closet, and inventoried what she’d hunted, gathered and stored. She’d not wanted to take so much that it would be missed, but what she had looked pitifully meager.  Not nearly enough to survive on for six months in the harshest environment on earth. When everyone came back in September to reopen the lodge, they could be in for one hell of a surprise.
Stop it. You put every high-tech fail-safe known to man in this building. You’re linked by satellite to Vancouver, and even to that little research station at the bottom of the hill. What’s the worst that could happen?
That someone would find her before the week was out, put her on the first plane home, and contact her former firm. Herbert would paint her as a crazy ex-employee. Her career in sustainable architecture would be over, and she’d never work again.
The other worst-case scenario? That her fail-safes would fail, and she’d freeze to death. Or run out of food and starve to death. On the bright side, at least she’d be with Blake.
