Interview with David Amerland
How did publishing your first book change your process of writing?
I learnt to plan. The first major book I wrote was “SEO Help” in 2010. I knew the subject thoroughly and I had done a ton of presentations to company executive workshops so I sort of launched into it and organically went from start to finish. I soon realized that had I planned it better it would have been a better book and an easier process. Planning creates structure and structure generates meaning for the reader as each chapter is designed to do something specific for them. It’s a lesson I took on board from then on.
What was an early experience where you learned that language had power?
I was 12. I won a debating contest at school. My words and the arguments I presented swayed an entire class to see my point of view. I have never forgotten that.
What one thing would you give up to become a better writer?
No contest. My soul! Being the best writer possible, being able to communicate in ways that shape people’s minds and affect their lives is nothing less than magical.
Tell us a little about yourself? Perhaps something not many people know?
I have been living online for such a long time now that I think most things about me are public knowledge. One thing I’ve talked about only very recently and not to many people is that my first grounding in ethics, morality and how to tell right from wrong came through reading comic books.
If you had to do something differently as a child or teenager to become a better writer as an adult, what would you do?
Nothing. The path I took has taken me to where I am now and I am very happy with where I am now and who I am. I wouldn’t change anything!
What is the biggest surprise that you experienced after becoming a writer?
It’s still funny how no matter how successful you get no one of your friends thinks it’s a real job. They all talk about my keynote speaker role and my multi-national consulting but none think that writing is something just as, if not more, serious.
Could you tell us a bit about your most recent book and why it is a must-read?
The foundation of our life. The dreams we have, the achievements we reach are predicated on our body and brain being able to function well. We need good health to be successful and feel happy. “Built To Last” is a blueprint that helps you make fitness fit your life instead of the other way around and because of that it makes lifelong fitness possible.
