Walled
(The Line #2)
by Anne Tibbets
Published by: Carina Press (HQN)
Publication date: December 1st 2014
Genres: Dystopia, New Adult

Synopsis:

Freedom means making brutal choices.

Rebel lovers Naya and Ric have survived one year in hiding, raising Naya's twins from infants to toddlers in the shadow of the brutal Auberge dictatorship. They're alive, and they're together, but the city is crumbling around them and the haunting memory of Naya's dark days on The Line have never fully left them. Living in isolation won't be an option forever.

When a mysterious revolutionary seeks their help to infiltrate Auberge's electronic heart and shut it down, it's an opportunity-it's risky, yes, but if it works they'll get out of the city and taste freedom for the first time. Naya needs this. They need this.

Beyond the broken walls of Auberge, Naya and Ric find the paradise they've always longed for. But with anarchy reigning and Naya's children lost amidst the chaos, they'll need to forfeit their post-apocalyptic Eden…or commit an unspeakable act.

Book two of two.

My Review: Walled

I received a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.

Walled picks up may be a year and a half after Carrier. The twins, girls have been born and are now about ten months old. I think for the first time in her life Naya finally knows what real love is and what it is to feel that love. Yes I know that Doc "Ric" loves and cares for her a whole lot and I think that yes Naya loves and cares for Ric as well. But having her babies has taught her what life is all about and has made her into the person she is now in Walled which is not quite the same person as she was in Carrier. But with Ric's kind and loving ways and his being so patient with her has showed her that she can be that person that she had tucked way down inside of her. She can now let her out and introduce her to the world and here I am and this is who I am. She has finally found out for herself as well who Naya is.

Ric, Naya, the twins and Naya's friend Shirel are all still hiding out from the people at Auberge. They want Naya because she never found another girl to take her place on the line. But Naya could never willing let another girl live the life she did and it being her fault on purpose. They have not seen Sonya since they had to run away and leave her behind in Carrier. They don't know if she is alive or dead until she knocks on their door one day. Sonya wants their help to take down Auberge. She wants to stop them so that everyone can have their freedom back and live their lives the way they want and to destroy the line too. Ric doesn't want to but Naya does. She wants to put an end to all of the citizens being slaves to the government as well as the girls being sex slaves for Auberge. Naya wants to make a better world for her girls and everyone else too.

I really liked Sonya in Carrier because of her past and the things she went through as well I kind of think that is why her and Naya hit it off so well and I liked her in Walled too but she kind of changed in Walled too like Naya did but just in a different way. Naya grew up and became a stronger person. But Sonya kind of seemed almost like two different people in some ways. In Carrie she was her own person and did things her way I mean she did too in Walled. But in Walled it was like she was the one giving orders she was the "boss" and in Carrier I felt like Ric was the boss. But I guess she just figured that Ric's way of doing things was not getting the job done and Ric she wanted to stay in hiding as long as that was what was keeping Naya and the girls safe. But she did come a knocking on the door and was ready to go fight Auberge so was Naya. Ric didn't want too but he wasn't going to let Naya out of his sight. He was going to do everything in his power to keep her and the girls' safe even if it meant going back and fighting.

I really enjoyed reading both Carrier and Walled and would love to read more about Naya, Ric and the girls lives and how it all worked out for them. I hope there is more in store for Naya and Ric in the near future. I think that Naya and Ric have a lot more that they would like to say. If you like reading dystopian worlds then you are going to love The Line Series. It is more than you could ever expect in a good series.

Carrier

My Review: Carrier

I received a free copy of the book from the author for my honest opinion.

Naya lives in a world that collapsed a long time ago and when the people starting building a new world with a new government. There was this cooperation that rebuilt and owned everything like banks, stores, clinics ect.... They had this one company where people that couldn't feed or take care of their children anymore they could sell them to this company. The company only wanted girl children that they could put on the line. The girls on the line were sex slaves. They took these girls when they reached puberty and even sometimes earlier than that. .

This company didn't care if the people who brought these girls there were their parents or not. They didn't care or even ask if they were their parents they just assumed that they were. They paid anyone who brought these girls to them in credits which was like money and they used it to buy food or whatever they wanted or needed. When these girls were sold to them; their parents or kidnappers or whoever they were; signed a ten year contract meaning that they had to stay on the line for ten years.

But when Naya was beaten real badly by a client "lover boy" she was taken to see the nurse for treatment; then she blacked out and when she woke up she was informed that she was pregnant with twins and since her ten year contract was going to run out during her pregnancy she was being released early. But there was a catch to her being let out. She had to find another girl to take her place on the line before her babies were born.

Naya was so relieved to be out on her own but she had been locked up in that place for so long that she was shocked to see how the people were living on the outside. She didn't trust anyone but could you blame her with all that she had lived through for the past nine years. But she did meet a few people that she had to depend on and trust to an extent. She met this woman that she shared a room with at a boarding house that told her about a free clinic that she could visit and get checked to see if she was really pregnant or not.

The Doc at the clinic knew the minute that he confirmed Naya was pregnant and that she was from the line that he had to help her and the babies. Naya liked the Doc but after everything she had been through she couldn't stand anyone getting in her space or touching her. Her body liked being close to Doc and she liked the feelings that she was having for and about him but her mind and body would freeze up when he got to close. The best thing about Doc was that; he was so understanding with Naya about how she felt and never got mad at her. He was always so sweet and kind to her. His friends Tym and Sonya were real nice and good with Naya too. They tried to make her feel comfortable when they were around her. Naya finally came to the realization that she had made some real good friends. She would do anything for her new friends as they would her. Which was exactly what they were doing trying to keep her alive.

I loved the dystopian world that Anne Tibbets created in Carrier. I don't like to think about it but I know that people make sex slaves out of girls and women every day in more ways than most of us will ever know. There is more of it that goes on than I will ever know about. There is more than one way of being a sex slave to someone. There may be and probably is a place somewhere in the world just like the one that Naya lived in. Men and women kidnap women and girls every day and sell them to the highest bidder. Some are prostitutes and maybe some are sex slaves to the person they are married to or their partner.

Excerpt:
I know people say they have emotional baggage. Do they know what they're talking about? I have baggage. I'm not bragging about it. I'm just stating the simple truth. I'm an effed-up individual who dwells on the past and tries to numb myself constantly. I don't use drugs, although I'll drink. I just numb myself by disappearing when I'm with people.

Jessica thinks I need to stop my destructive behavior. Sure, sure. I'll just plant my feet firmly on the ground and stop. If only it were that easy. If it were, then I'd do it. At least I think I would do it.

I don't mean to knock Jessica. I love her. God, I love her. But I don't know how to explain to her … how to tell her that I'm broken. Beyond repair. There's not enough glue to put me back together.

Maybe the issue is me. I know that seems obvious. I slit my wrists, after all. No one made me. I did it. But hear me out. Millions of people have difficult lives, yet they still function. Again, I swear this isn't a Bell Jar moment. I'm not bonkers. Confused: yes. Scared: check. Angry: most definitely. I spend most of my time annoyed with people. Why do they have to be so fucking stupid?

I like to study history. The history of the little guy. Don't get me wrong, kings, queens, explorers and shit, they're all cool, but I like to see how the little guys make it. How do they survive hardship? Like Elie Wiesel-he survived the Holocaust for Christ's sake, and then he wrote a book about it. I read that book a lot. If he could survive that, why can't I survive my past? Why do I always go back? I didn't live in Auschwitz. My home life sucked. Sucked big time. My parents are horrible people. They do not like me, not one bit. But my home isn't Auschwitz, and my parents are not Nazis. Why can't I be a survivor, be like Elie?

It isn't like I always go back to a particular incident. I'm not a time traveler. (This isn't a Slaughterhouse-Five scenario either. I'm not Billy Pilgrim.) I just check out. I don't know where I go, but I'm gone. I'll stop talking-that's another way to become invisible. I might nod my head, act like I'm listening. I'm not. Most people, though, don't really care whether anyone else is listening. Many people don't even notice. They just want to talk. They just want to feel as if someone is listening. How many people really care what others think? Not many, from my experience. That's one of the hardest things to live with, feeling alone. Even when I'm with others I feel alone. Even more so. I don't think many people can relate to me. I know I can't relate to them. I feel like I'm on the outside, looking in.

Disappearing all of the time has perpetuated this feeling of being alone. Logically, I should stop disappearing. But my brain doesn't think logically. I'm not sure how it thinks, but I don't feel logical.

I feel … well, I don't know how I feel. Confused. Scared. Angry. Alone. But now that I think about it, I'm not sure that's true. At times, I'm sure I feel all of those emotions. Other times, I don't feel. Not at all. I don't get it. I wish I could, but I don't.

Explanations-that's what I seek. I've always been one who wonders who, what, and why, which is just another reason I love to study history. Every history test has those "who am I?" questions, and I nail them every time. In fact, I'm a brilliant student. I don't mean to brag. I'm just stating the facts. School and I get along. I have a photographic memory; some think that's cheating, but I can't change it. It's nice if you want good grades.

But when it comes to asking those questions about myself. Who am I? What am I? I can't really answer them. They seem fairly obvious, right? I'm me. I'm a girl. And I'm not one who wants to be a boy, even if I'm in love with a girl. I think people who think that are idiots. Usually, though, they don't see that. I wish idiots would recognize that they're idiots. Life would be so much easier if others said, "Don't bother with me, I'm an idiot."

Let's start again, at the beginning. I slit my wrists. My girlfriend came home. She went ape-shit. I got stitches in both arms. I felt a little like Frankenstein-the monster I mean, even if that's not really correct. Everyone thinks the monster's name is Frankenstein, so I'm not about to correct them and tell them it was the doctor's name. My point is that I was patched back together and told to be normal, to be human. Victor Frankenstein, the scientist, didn't try to teach the monster, but at least Jess is trying to teach me how to be normal. How to be human.

PROMO Blitz: Pest Control by Sofia Diana Gabel @sofiadianagabel @RABTBookTours #Giveaway

Environmental Satire / Thriller
Date Published: November 24, 2014

Joseph Vogorev hates spiders and loves money. As the president and CEO of chemical giant Pest No More, he develops a neurotoxin pesticide specially formulated to target only arachnid species. When outspoken environmentalist Gale Pacalis realizes the potential for planet-wide devastation, he wants more than anything to bring Vogorev down. With a host of quirky friends, he collects data to prove Arach-No-More's lethality. Teenaged Amelia joins his group because she's personally invested; her pink kneed tarantula, Pinky, died. It's a race to save the world, but as Gale and his friends go head-to-head with Vogorev, the many obstacles they face makes it seem impossible to win. Mainly because Vogorev has unlimited money and a limited conscience.

Excerpt

Vogorev waved the aerosol can in the air. "The specialized and patented nozzle on this can disperses the contents at five hundred feet per second. Not exactly the speed of light, but still pretty damn quick." He chuckled.

There was a strained silence and then a lone high-pitched voice called out, "Those are spiders up there!"

Gale looked up at a tank right above his head. The lady was right. The outline of spiders pressed against the plastic was unmistakable; all of those little legs writhing and clawing to get out. There had to be thousands of them in the tanks, throwing themselves against the side as if they were crazy. Before anyone else had the chance to react, a scraping sound echoed off the walls as the bottom of the containers slid open and hairy tarantulas rained down over the audience amid screams and shrieks. Gale stared at Vogorev and saw how he calmly depressed the spray nozzle for several seconds, then smiled and took a few steps backward.

The audience was frenzied, jumping up and down, brushing eight-legged bodies off their pin-striped suits and designer dresses. Gale shook a spider off his head and stepped over a couple of carcasses as the investors exchanged horrified glances with one another. They were trembling and shuddering and holding onto each other. The spiders, however, did nothing.

When Vogorev spoke, the people paid attention as if he was a messiah, "I told you to trust me. Look around. The spiders are all dead. They were dead long before they even hit the ground."

Gale picked up a carcass at his feet. True to Vogorev's word, the spider was dead. They were all dead. Thousands of tarantulas lay on the floor as if a mass arachnid suicide had just occurred.

About the Author

Sofia Diana Gabel started life in Sydney, Australia, but her family moved to the United States when she was very young. Home wasn't settled for a long time and included living in Toronto, Canada; Henrietta and Buffalo, New York; Northridge, Southern California; a short stint back in Sydney, Australia; Reno, Nevada; Dallas, Texas; Daytona Beach, Florida, with an eventual semi-settled life in Ojai and Ventura, Southern California as a single parent to her three daughters.

Perhaps the unsettled partial nomadic lifestyle is the reason she loves to travel and is never fully satisfied with where she's living. Moving around and travelling to different countries are adventures which serve as potential settings and plots for stories. A multi-genre fiction writer, with degrees in environmental science and archaeology, and coursework in creative writing and criminal justice, she enjoys being out in nature, keeping up on archaeological discoveries and learning about the law, criminal behavior and police procedures (all with, once again, potential for stories!)

When she's not glued to her desk writing or researching, she loves to spend time with her family and hairless Sphynx cats. Writing is a true passion, born from a love of the written word and how those words can transport the reader to different places or worlds and deliver them back to reality, safe and sound.
