My Review:

Aria is back and she is still kicking butt and the one person’s butt she would love to kick is her mate Delcan. Aria is not too thrilled about being mated to anyone much less Delcan; the Alpha of the Pact even though he mated with her to save her life. Aria is not up for being anyone’s little pup oh no she likes doing her own thing and she likes doing it when wants to do it and not when she is told to do it or on some else’s’ terms. With Delcan being an Alpha he likes to be in control of everything including Aria but that is not going to happen.

While Aria is having her little spat with Delcan and fighting against being his mate she has other problems outside the compound. Someone is after Aria why she doesn’t know but she is a stubborn and strong person and will not be taken without a fight. She also has Delcan and the Pack on her side to help keep her safe from whoever is after her. Delcan will tear anyone apart that lays a hand on Aria.

Aria is a strong person who can take care of herself yeah she has a little problem controlling her powers but she is practicing every day and getting stronger. Aria is a pyrokinetic and can create fire although she has a hard time of reining it in at times. And when she is under a lot of stress it wants to come to the surface all on its own without her calling it.

Meanwhile Aria is hired by a witch; a member of the Coven to find an eleven year girl who has been kidnapped. A few months back Aria was hired to find a seven year old boy who had been kidnapped but by the time she found him it was too late. She is determined that she will not let another child die if she can help it. The lady that has hired Aria to find the child knows about Aria being mated with the leader of the Pack and wants Aria’s help in obtaining the Pack’s help in locating the girl. She knows the only way Delcan will agree to help them is if Aria asks him.

The Pack, the Coven and the Vampires do not get along with each other very well although they do tolerate each other to keep the piece. Everyone knows that one day war will break out between the Pack, the Coven and the Vampires because all of them are leaders and wants to have the most power and to be the one in control.

I am very grateful for being given this opportunity to read Burned by Fire. Once I picked it up I raced right through it like a raging inferno. I think that Burned by Fire has been my favorite book in the Blood and Magic series so far and I can’t wait for more.

I love all the characters in the series and hope to find out more about them and their past as well. I like the fact that Aria and Delcan don’t get along very well in a way I can’t really blame Aria I think I would react the same way if I was in her position. Before Aria and Delcan mated I wanted it to be James the Pack’s Hunter and Aria’s best friend that she ended up with; although I do like Delcan now; I still have a soft spot for James.

If you like reading about shifters, witches, vampires and humans with special abilities then you are going to love Burned by Fire. But I would suggest that you start with book #1 Cursed by Fire and then Kissed by Fire Book #2 to get the whole story and so you will know what is going on and you won’t be left in the dark on a few things. I think I am hooked on the Blood and Magic series and can’t wait for the next book.

Dark Desires #2

BLURB:

After twenty-four excruciatingly boring years of doing her duty, Alex is finally having some fun. She never meant to run away—it was a rash impulse—and she means to go back—eventually. But first, she’s going to squeeze enough excitement out of the situation to last her a lifetime. And what could be more exciting than a stunningly gorgeous werewolf?

Saving the universe sucks

Flying Through Fire
by Nina Croft
Dark Desires #6

BLURB:

For ten thousand years he’s done his duty. Now he wants something for himself…

Winged monsters have been seen in the skies, and a pestilence follows in their wake, threatening the very survival of mankind. Only the crew of the Blood Hunter knows where they come from, and only one man has the power to send them back—Thorne, a human/dragon hybrid in possession of mental powers beyond comprehension.

Candace Decker doesn’t need anyone to look after her—she’s a badass werewolf more than capable of protecting herself and those she loves. All the same, she’s always been drawn to Thorne’s strength. In an uncertain world, he’s the one man who makes her feel safe. And what Candy wants, she usually gets.

But while Candy is tenacious, Thorne’s willpower has been honed over ten thousand years. He might want her, but the last thing he needs is an infatuation with a young, impetuous werewolf. Candy makes him lose control, and that could have disastrous consequences.

As the threat escalates and they become separated by time and space, Candy must find a way back to him, because while Thorne alone has the power to defeat the dragons, only together can they finally bring peace to the universe.

An Excerpt From Flying Through Fire

At last she caught something in his expression.

Lust.

“You owe me a kiss,” she said, and the lust was gone in a flash, replaced by…panic?
Without giving herself time to back down—or Thorne the chance to run away— she rested her hand flat against his chest so his heartbeat thudded beneath her palm.

A step closer and they were almost touching along the lengths of their bodies. A shiver of anticipation ran through her, tingling across her skin, settling in her belly. She swallowed, and her eyes flicked around the room. She’d almost forgotten the other people present. Now she caught Rico’s gaze, and he lifted one eyebrow, his mouth curling into an amused smile. Tannis stood beside him, her boot tapping on the floor.

They probably thought she wouldn’t do this. Or Thorne would stop her. But Thorne was standing completely still, not even a tremor to his wing tips, as though he was keeping everything screwed down really tight.

And she was going to do this.

She took a deep breath, ran her hand up across his chest, over his shoulder, and around the back of his neck, digging her fingers into his short, silky hair. For a second he remained completely stiff, and then something seemed to snap inside him. His arms, which had been hanging by his side, wrapped around her. One slid up her back to burrow in her long hair. He gripped it tight and tugged her head back.

As she caught a last glimpse of his eyes, a brief flash of fear flickered through her mind. Power whirled in their depths. How had she ever had the nerve to bait this man?

But then his mouth was on hers and all rational thought was shoved from her mind.

He wasn’t gentle.

And she’d always expected him to be gentle, but this was a harsh, fierce kiss, as though he couldn’t help himself, and she loved it. Her mouth opened beneath his and his tongue thrust inside. He tasted of spice, hot and sweet, as he stroked her tongue. She held him to her and pushed her own tongue into his mouth, along the rough edge of his teeth, the roof of his mouth.

The world was spiraling out of control.

Literally.

Something loud and bright flashed close by and her eyes opened.

Thorne stopped moving. She tried to urge him on. She wanted more. If this was the only kiss she got—

Another flash and she shook her head and glanced to the side. Tannis stood, legs braced apart, laser pistol raised to the ceiling. And the ship was spinning.

Thorne pushed her gently away, and she didn’t hold him. What was going on? She stepped back and watched as his eyes closed and he visibly regained control. And the world stopped whirling.

He opened his eyes and they were back to normal, his expression once again blank.

“Well, that was interesting,” Tannis said. “Maybe we’d better lock her back in the brig while you’re onboard.”

Thorne blinked, shook his head. “That won’t be necessary.”

“Really? That was just a kiss. What happens if she actually gets inside your pants? I’m guessing we might all spontaneously combust.
And that’s not happening under my command.”

About Nina Croft:

Growing up in the cold, wet, north of England, Nina Croft spent a lot of time dreaming of faraway sunnier places and ponies. When she discovered both, along with a whole load of other things, could be found between the covers of a book, her life changed forever.

Later, she headed south, picked up the perfect husband along the way, and together they volunteered to work in Africa. There they discovered a love of exotic places and a dislike of 9-5 work. Afterward they spent a number of years travelling (whenever possible) intermingled with working (whenever necessary.) Eventually they stumbled upon a remote area in the mountains of southern Spain and the small almond farm they now call home.

Nina spends her days reading, writing and riding her mare, Gencianna, under the blue Spanish skies—sunshine and ponies. She reckons this is proof that dreams really can come true if you want them enough.

While walking in the woods to take a break from the stress of it all, Melinda meets a boy named Connor. After a few more run-ins, the two settle into an uneasy friendship, if you can even call it that.

But Connor's closed and mysterious. Whenever Melinda asks too many questions, he suddenly has to go or is no longer interested in talking. When they’re together, she’s torn between wanting him to open up and running away as fast as she can. Still she can't seem to shake her budding interest in him.

Connor has his own way of looking at the world, and his views often conflict with Melinda’s practical nature. Can you like someone and loathe them at the same time? Is he even worth the emotional tug on her heartstrings or distraction from all things Junior year?

And, as if she needs another project right now, Melinda starts to obsess over the abandoned estate she passes on the way to school each day. Between Connor and the old estate, Melinda's beginning to think she's taking on too much.

But Melinda's smart. She finds a way to indulge her interest in the estate and fulfill her obligations. She will uncover the truth behind the aging edifice for an epic article in the school newspaper.

But when her investigation reveals a connection between Connor and a tragedy long-since forgotten, Melinda has a choice: put off her junior year achievements to save a local landmark and a boy who constantly pushes her away or put them both out of her mind for good and focus on making the grade.

EXCERPT
Moving day ends with a crash, a series of thuds, and shattering glass.
The box labeled “Melinda’s Room” careens down the back staircase and dive-bombs on to the marble tile. All of my carefully packed, triple-layered, bubble-wrapped treasures fly out and scatter around the unfamiliar kitchen.
I drop to the floor, grabbing for debris. “Please tell me my trophies weren’t in there.”
“Watch yourself, miss.” The head mover shoves his hands into a pair of work gloves and hefts a cracked mirror. His partner hands me a piece of paper. “Write down a description of the contents. We’ll replace anything that’s broken.”
I jump back up, meeting him eye to eye. “Can you replace a trophy I won five years ago at the Tri-State Youth Show Jumping Expo?”
My fury is met with a blank expression. I sigh heavily and slide the bottom of my black Converse over the floor, listening for the crunch of broken glass. One of the movers lifts the box, uncovering the bottom half of my trophy. I locate the top half and attempt to click them back together, like two misfit puzzle pieces.
By the time Mom pushes through the door, carrying a crate of her work files, I’ve given up any hope of repair. A bent picture frame snaps apart when she steps on it. “What happened here?”
I point at the movers. “They dropped my box. The one with my trophies.”
The men mutter apologies and back out of the room.
“The way our luck runs, I’m surprised we made it this far without major breakage.” Mom sets her crate down gently and puts her arm around my shoulders. “I’m sorry it had to be your stuff that was damaged, Mel.”
I shrug her off. “No use crying about it now.”
She finds a broom in the nearest closet and sweeps up the shattered glass while I gather up my sports memorabilia. Basketball team photos, a collage of equestrian events featuring me and my horse, Truffle, and a tangled heap of medals I’d collected over the years.
I circle the kitchen, opening and closing dozens of half-empty drawers, searching for a roll of garbage bags.
“Under the sink,” Mom says.
I locate the bags, pull one out, and shake it open. “Tell me again. Why did we think moving was a good idea?”
Mom’s eyebrows inch up. “Did you ever really approve?”
“Ha, ha. Don’t ask questions if you don’t like the answers.”
The unspoken truth hangs in the air between us. After Dad died five years ago, Mom was just as broken as my riding trophy. She didn’t recover until she met the second love of her life at the age of forty-five. Brian Welsh approached her at a pharmaceutical industry conference last year. They had lunch. He asked for her card and called her the next day. Two months later, he gave her a ring.
She’d dated my dad for five years before they even talked about marriage.

Book Blast + #Giveaway: Twilight Over Moldavia by Stephanie Burkhart @StephBurkhart @GoddessFish

Twilight Over Moldavia
by Stephanie Burkhart

BLURB:

Romanian unification is on the horizon and the spirited Crown Princess of Carpathia, Caroline, would prefer to ride horses and archery to embroidery and dancing. Complicating her life is her recent discovery that she's a witch.

Prince Stefan Sigmaringen travels to Carpathia to meet Caroline. He discovers he has much in common with her. He also learns that a strange man, Timon, has an unnatural interest in him.

Upon Stefan's engagement, he overhears his mother confessing to a horrible secret – she cursed him in order to conceive him and Stefan will become a werewolf when he turns eighteen. There is a condition to overcome the curse, but it will require Stefan to draw on all his inner strength and Caroline, her courage. Can they break the foul enchantment and secure their future or will Stefan give himself over to the lupine curse that haunts his family?

Excerpt:

Caroline spun in the direction of the noise, effortlessly drawing an arrow and hitching it to her bow. A horse neighed, and bushes about fifty meters ahead of her rustled.

Someone was there, watching. But who? A blast of adrenaline rocketed through her. She wasn't about to let her guard down. It wasn't wise of her to be looking for Edwina's scarf with the Sigmaringens due to arrive today, but she believed in following her heart. She prayed on this occasion she hadn't been reckless. Spying a hint of color among the leaves, she let the arrow fly, determined to protect her ladies.

"Ow!" A man's deep voice shouted.

Caroline grimaced. She hoped she hadn't hurt anyone. Her arrow had merely been intended to scare away whoever was watching, not to harm them. Racing forward, she parted the bushes and came upon two young men around her age, both in riding clothes.

Caroline's gaze fell upon the young man on the horse. Their eyes locked. Her cheeks warmed, and some indefinable spark passed between them that heated her body. Oh, she had noticed several handsome guards under her father's command, but this man was different. His malachite eyes spoke of duty, the same sense of duty she harbored, yet hinted at a desire for mischief. His cheekbones were sharp, giving him an almost lupine appearance. He had an air of authority about him, a commanding presence that demanded respect.

His square jaw tensed visibly, and her gaze drifted down his leg. Her arrow had ripped his riding pants and blood trickled from a small flesh wound.

Concern flooded through her. She dropped her bow, pulled her scarf from around her neck, and rushed forward.

"I'm so sorry." The words gushed out as clumsily as she moved. "I didn't mean to harm you."

His mouth spread into a thin-lipped smile. Was he displeased? She couldn't blame him. Still, he said nothing. Caroline placed a hand on his thigh, and a rip current of energy shot up her arm. The space around him glowed brightly, and deep, unspoken desire flamed inside her.

Mine.

She shook off the sudden, possessive thought and wrapped the scarf around his leg. The blood stained it, but she applied pressure with her hand and the bleeding stopped. Her heart beat a wild tattoo. His leg was well muscled, exuding power. When she looked back up at him, she couldn't deny that he was a handsome man with a beautifully proportioned body that heated her body with desire from their shared touch. She felt alive in a way she couldn't explain. But what man could ever desire the outdoorsy Crown Princess of Carpathia?

"What's your name?" he asked in a rich, deep voice.

EXCERPT:

I’m sleeping. I fell asleep on my bed. I have to be.
But not fully convinced, I inched down the hall to investigate further. When I turned to inspect the bathroom, my face collided with a pile of towels, nearly eating them. It was Mom.
I wearily backed away from her, not sure which Mom I was confronting.
“I heard you scream.”
“Um.” My voice quavered. “A spider, on my bed.”
“Well, did you get ’im?”
“Um, yeah, I flushed it down the toilet.” My blood surged as she needled me with her eyes.
Mom leaned in close. “You smell like a pond. Take a shower.” She handed over the warm stack of towels. “Here.”
As I eased inside the bathroom, my heart hammered so hard I heard it beating from outside my chest. I slowly closed the door, watching it, waiting for something else to happen, but it didn’t.
I put away the towels in the closet, turned on the shower, and collapsed on top of the toilet seat. Had my reality and dream world finally collided? Or was I just crazy?
Pulling my knees in, I began to rock back and forth while babbling, “I don’t know, I don’t know, I don’t know.”
I twirled my hair, giving it a yank, feeling a burning twinge of delight. The pain was real. And so was the clump of hair that emerged from my palm. I rolled the long strands between my fingertips, reminding me of corn silk, and watched them flutter to the floor. My arms curled tight around my legs, I began rocking again. I couldn’t be sure that anything was real at this point. I wasn’t to be trusted. I stood up and looked in the mirror.
An unkempt version of myself blinked blankly back at me; her sullen eyes were encircled by sleepless nights, and her hair was wild as a beast’s, oily and matted. A chunk went missing by her ear.
There I stood, watching the tears spill over her cheeks. I looked deeper into the mirror, watching her mimic my movements. She bit her bottom lip, in serious denial, and pressed her palms against the glass, meeting mine.
“A crazy person doesn’t ask whether they are crazy. They just are,” we said to one another.
The steam condensed on the mirror, leaving only my handprints. And soon the haze filled them in, too. I took off my clothes and stepped into the shower. The hot streams pelted my face as I dared to close my eyes again, rinsing away the insanity. Water slapped the porcelain floor of the tub in short spurts as I rinsed my hair. A slow creak of the bathroom door echoed in between splats and a cold rush of air flooded over the top of the shower curtain. I opened my eyes. Steam had filled the shower, from the ceiling down.
“Hello?” I queried nervously from behind the curtain.
“Pajamas. I’ll leave them on the toilet seat.” Mom’s erratic tone ricocheted around the tiny room.
“Thanks,” I replied, watching her silhouette disappear from behind the curtain.
“To your room when you’re done, Samantha.” Her demand echoed from the hallway.
The door clicked shut.
I cranked the shower knob toward the H. The steam surrounded me and rose to the ceiling. I stood amidst the hot streams, hearing a clang from the vent in the ceiling, and shortly afterward my name echoed through the steel opening. My gaze darted to the ceiling. Wide-eyed with panic, I shut off the water and waited. My name whispered ominously through the same hole in the wall again, entering through the small cracks of my mind between insanity and reality.
