Interview with C.K. Brooke

1.        What inspired you to write The Wrong Prince?

I’d written a quest, a revolution and a treasure hunt, so the next adventure I wanted to tackle was a rescue mission. I loved the idea of an imprisoned prince in need of rescue, and a plot to assassinate the deranged king who abducted him.

2.        When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

I was six years old when I wrote my first book. It never stopped from there!

3.        What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

My family read to me all the time as a baby and toddler. I learned to read when I was around 3 or 4, before kindergarten, and I mainly learned how through those Spot books (the ones about the dog).

4.        What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

I love to read YA fantasy with romantic elements.

5.        What is your favorite book?

I have many favorites, but right now I have to say my favorite books are the YA paranormal books, Foreshadowed and Forewarned, the first two installments of the Near Deaths Series by Holly M. Campbell. I’m anxiously awaiting Book 3.

6.        You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

My favorite YA authors right now are Kiera Cass and Holly M. Campbell. I’ll read just about anything they write.

7.        If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time, where would you go and why?

I’d love to visit the 1800s and meet all of my great-great grandparents around the world – in Greece, Russia, Syria, Latvia, etc. I think we all would’ve gotten along and been great friends, had we been contemporaries.

8.        When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

The writing part has always come easily for me - especially wording, grammar, sentences and dialogue. What’s more difficult is the plotting and crafting, pacing and timing of creating a marketable story.

9.        Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

I used to have dogs, but now I have a small child and he’s a handful!

10.    What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?

I’m originally from Maryland, so I love seafood. They say fish is “brain food” – my husband thinks I’m smart because of all the fish I eat!

11.    Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Be prepared to work hard. It’s not an easy industry and takes lots of time to build momentum. But if you write because you love it and are passionate about it, then that’s your fuel to keep you going.

Payton Carter is one of six kids (all of which are named after famous football players), not to mention the only girl in the Carter household. With this much testosterone and no mother, it’s no wonder she’s absolutely clueless when it comes to makeup, dances, and talking to guys she’s crushing on. And now she’s about ready to start her freshman year of high school, which is nerve wrenching enough, but when she ends up running into her crush, Chance Montgomery, at her dad’s sports restaurant, she finds out that the quarterback for their rival team is moving to Aller Falls. This is nothing short of fate.
Payton realizes she has to find a way to impress Chance and get him to ask her out or at least know she’s interested in him—preferably without dropping a plateful of fries on his head, like she did last time. After taking her two oldest brothers’ advice, she decides to go out for the freshman football team, figuring that between practices and games she and her crush will surely be able to talk. And maybe talking will lead to something more permanent or at least to a first kiss. Only this plan backfires in ways she never imagined, when she beats Chance Montgomery out of the starting quarterback position. Now not only does she make him the laughing stock of the team, but also has to figure out how to avoid the snotty cheerleaders, a traitor best friend, not to mention winning games for her team. Too bad this is just the beginning of her freshman year.

Excerpt from Raising Mary: Frankenstein by Ace Antonio Hall:

For more than nineteen hours, I inhaled death. Darkness crawled around my soul and ripped jagged holes in my sagging heart. The death I inhaled spilled out of my lungs, oozing acidic poison so damaging to my spirit, it was scarred for life. I pressed play one last time before getting off of the plane which had just traveled from Bournemouth to Hawaii.
A warm hand came down gently on my shoulder.

Her voice eased out a gentle tone. “Are you ready to go, “Sylva?”

My best friend, Emily. She knew not to utter another sound, for I had no voice in which to answer. The moving image began again, and almost for an instant, I smiled. But seeing that sweet little girl in the video again—those tiny dimples, that heart-warming smile, and hearing her cheerfully sing, dancing like a ballerina on that small airplane monitor only reminded me that I would never, ever see her again.

As I watched, my thoughts drifted ominously like black clouds floating into the stormy memories of the past downpour of chaos, the last forty-eight hours. I knew for certain that I wouldn't study for my AP necromancy exam for Monday, tomorrow. Mom would chew me out because I'd miss yet another day, or two, of senior high school.

I wouldn't eat. I wouldn't sleep much either. I'd spend that dreary time obsessing about how, for a seven-year-old girl named Dresette Swansea, raising Mary Shelley from the grave sealed her walking papers in an envelope marked death.

(Once Upon A Secret, #1)
Publication date: September 12th 2016
Genres: Contemporary, Suspense, Young Adult

To be a normal teenage girl.
To forget about the past.
To fall in love for the first time.
Is that too much to ask?

Sixteen-year-old Allie Bailey just wants a break—a break from her overly-protected life. And Dragonfly Meadows summer camp is the answer. A summer away from her parents in the California Sierras with her best friend is exactly what she needs.

But once at camp, Allie notices that things are a little off. Paid excursions are cancelled and staff is replaced with shady new people. When the camp’s founder goes “missing,” Allie starts to worry. Unable to let it rest due to her past, she starts to investigate, enlisting the help of Logan Montgomery, her best friend’s older and adorably geeky brother.

When hauntingly familiar flowers appear in Allie’s cabin, she’s not sure what to think—has her past caught up to her? Yet, after Allie stumbles across a murder conspiracy and chases down the truth, she becomes a target. Pushing through her paranoia and fear to find strength, it’s up to Allie to save herself and the campers from a deranged killer before it’s too late.

EXCERPT:

My life turned a corner today to a kickass summer. A glorious day sliding past go and collecting $200 on the highway to my freedom, two days after the ultimate Independence Day. I wanted to shout my bliss to the world, but I refrained from killing my mother’s eardrums any further. Nerd, much?
For the first time in my short sixteen years, I was headed to summer camp. How stupid exciting was that? For others it was no big deal, or even lame. For me, camp meant paradise, considering I’d begged my parents to let me go for the last four summers and got the big, fat no every flipping time. It wasn’t even about money. Just major overprotectiveness due to The Incident That Shall Not Be Cloned.
Although I was joining the Teen Leadership Program as a Cabin Leader, I was coming apart at the seams to revel in the whole camp experience. Not all would be work, though. My best friend slash partner in crime, Laurel Montgomery, and I had dibs on fun. Escaping the house for two weeks was a major step toward more freedom in my life. I just wished my parents held my same excitement. The thought deflated my insane joy.
My gaze bounced to Mom’s white-knuckled grip on the steering wheel. I brushed my fingers over her thigh. “It’ll be okay. You have to let me go sometime.” The four black beads rolled on my leather cuff as I withdrew my hand from her leg. I spun the beads around the band, ignoring their significance for a change.
“I know, Allie. I’m just—”
I curbed the urge to pull more of my hair out before baldness set in. “We’ve hashed this out. You’ve checked out the camp a zillion times. Carla Amadori’s family has owned the joint forever. Laurel and Logan love her, and you spoke to all the other parents.” Overkill if you ask me. “And you know Laurel and Logan will kill anyone who even looks at me wrong.” Even though I kidded, I mentally kicked myself for dredging up that bit of paranoia.
Four years ago on my twelfth birthday, a psycho abducted me and held me at gunpoint for twenty-four hours. My father’s investment brokerage had fired the freak and he flipped. I knew the man from attending various company events. I was lucky he didn’t lay his grubby paws on me or physically harm me. The mental damage was bad enough. Now everyone looked suspicious, and I couldn’t go anywhere without spying one person who looked like a deranged kidnapper. After counseling, I’d learned ways to cope with the trauma, but I still watched my back whenever I left the house. Seriously, I had developed eyes in the back of my head.
The Incident shaped my teenage existence in so many ways. Worst of all, it royally curtailed my freedom. Four smothering years later, because Laurel and her seventeen-year-old brother, Logan, my appointed watchdogs, talked my parents into letting me go, promising they’d stay with me 24/7, I was on my way. Without Laurel’s nagging, I’d be stuck at home this summer with the swimming pool, my cat, and the housekeeper eagle-eyeing my every move.
For the most part, I had buried the memories of the abduction. When I dwelled on them, I made myself believe The Incident was a fictional movie about a girl named Alex. Now, I just wanted to appease my mother before she changed her mind and locked me up at Casa Bailey for the summer. The gates to my prison had opened. By the skin of my dead body, I wasn’t going back inside.
“Happened a long time ago, Mom.” I fingered the bangles on her right wrist. “You have to let it go.” You have to let me go. “Everything will be fine.”
“I know. I know.” Mom’s fingers loosened on the steering wheel. “You have your phone?”
Groaning, I knocked my head on the headrest. “For the millionth time, you know we aren’t allowed to bring them.” The camp was electronic-free, back to nature, home to crappy cell reception. I had no problems living off the grid for two weeks. I wasn’t big on social media or texting anyone except Laurel anyway. The parentals also forbade me to engage on social media, so my phone was simply a phone.
“Right.” Eyes on the road ahead, Mom dug through her purse and withdrew a new smartphone. “Take this.” She stuck it in my hand. “Keep it with you at all times.” A charger landed on my lap.
“Are you kidding me? Mom!” I held the phone as if dog crap coated it. My nose wrinkled. “Paranoid, much?”
“No, I’m not kidding. Don’t tell anyone you have it. Not even Laurel or Logan.”
“You planning to call me every flipping day?” I stuffed the phone in my hobo purse and clutched the bag to my chest, my irritation fading as we neared the school.
“Watch your tongue.” She wheeled the car into the parking lot.
We passed through the familiar scrolled wrought-iron gates of my private school. The campground had a deal with the San Francisco school to use their bus to cart local kids to the camp. Otherwise, you wouldn’t catch me dead or alive on school grounds during the summer.
Vehicles jammed the small parking lot, ignoring the white parking lines. Logan stood by the Montgomery’s silver van. He’d morphed into a taller, sinewy geek with pale skin sorely needing a tan. Maybe he’d buy one at camp, far, far away from me.
Ugh. Why’d he agree to come this summer? Seeing him set off a tumble of thoughts inside my head and an odd crick in my heart I wanted to avoid. I’d once had a tiny crush on the gangly, too-tall-for-his-body loner. Into mixed martial arts, he had a black belt which made him king of the geek squad. Laurel, Logan, and I used to hang like birds on a wire at their home when my parents worked, which was all the time. Then the abduction happened. Next thing, I had the plague as far as he was concerned. He’d disappeared without a word to boarding school in Arizona, and then abruptly returned home this past December for his final semester of junior year. My crush evaporated along with many emotions and feelings that year. We’d avoided one another since his return, both of us burying our heads in the sand. Logan had much ado about the kidnapping, and neither of us had confronted each other about that gruesome event. Talk about lame times ten. Blame, resentment, guilt, sorrow, it all boiled up into a mixed stew when I thought about him. Confusion skewered me most of all. I repeat, ugh.

EXCERPT:

Faith appeared with four glowing green drinks in a cup holder tray. Clear plastic cups, lids, and straws let the liquid inside glow through. It looked like something that would spawn ninja turtles. “These are the Incinerator’s own toxic spills. They’re just vodka and sprite with a capful of that crap they put in glow sticks. Did you know you can drink that shit?”
Jonah reluctantly took a plastic cup. “Are you sure we should drink it?”
“It’s not going to kill us. No more so than the alcohol.” Ilya picked up a cup and took a long generous pull on his straw.
I took an experimental sip. It tasted like vodka and sprite. There was a mildly synthetic aftertaste, but nothing toxic. I took another, much larger sip. There it was – the warmth I’d been craving since my shower. I might stand a chance of sleeping tonight after all.
Jonah followed my lead and took a slurp on his straw, pausing to let the liquid do its work. He looked at me with a devilish grin and grabbed my hand, pulling me off to the dance floor. His touch radiated energy into me, right through my skin waking up every cell in my body.
He leaned down and kissed me, running his hands through my hair. His powerful grip felt restrained, as though his mind fought to control his body. The intensity surpassed our first night together. After we had spent so long mocked by his unstable mutation, first hurting me and then nearly killing him, we were both finally stronger than ever.
“I can’t help myself. I need to touch you. I don’t ever want to let you go. We’re going to make up for some lost time tonight.” His lips brushed my ear as he spoke. His fingers traced the line of my neck and it sent shivers down my spine. So much for sleep!

VBT + #Giveaway: The Last Ten Pounds by Lina Sage @GoddessFish

The Last Ten Pounds:
One Woman's Journey to Love (by shedding Fear, Anger, Hatred...and Everything In-Between)
by Lina Sage
GENRE: Memoir

BLURB:

Shortly after I was born, my family left Vietnam’s strict Communist regime by escaping on a tiny fishing boat in the middle of the night.

Luckily, Canada accepted us as refugees and we were excited for a new beginning. However, any hopes of a brighter future vanished before an abusive alcoholic father who’s repeated physical violence against my mom left me screaming for any stability. Sexual, physical and emotional abuse clouded my childhood years leaving me so damaged that it changed who I was meant to grow up to be.

In my early twenties, I bought a house and converted it into a full blown marijuana grow op.

Soon after, I entered into the world of elite call girls and became one of the most sought after girls in my agency. By my late twenties, I was on top of the world and the proud owner of a multi-million-dollar luxury day spa.

Just when I thought I had it all, I made the ultimate mistake that ended in me losing everything and hitting rock bottom.

I was spiritually broken and in desperate need of healing. I had no choice but to reconcile with my past. This decision brought me down a miraculous journey that opened me up to consciousness and enabled me to exist in the space I do today; that of uninhibited peace.

The Last 10 Pounds: One Woman’s Journey to Love (by shedding Fear, Anger, Hatred…and Everything In-Between) is my personal journey and a testament that it is possible to heal and transform. To be the person you were born to be.

Excerpt:

“Uncle Quinn… please stop. Please stop Uncle Quinn! Stop it you’re hurting me!” I wailed loudly.

“Shhh… I’m just playing with you,” he replied with a sly look on his face, as he continued to grope me with both hands.

This had happened many times before, the constant touching and fondling of my private parts every time Uncle Quinn saw me. See the thing is, I didn’t make it easy for him because of my feisty nature. Usually I would be able to run away before he could really get a hold of me and on the times that I couldn’t get away, his inappropriateness would only last a few minutes until I would squirm so hard that he would finally release me from his grasp.

But today was different and I felt it immediately. His huge hand pinned down both my tiny wrists and with his other hand he proceeded to maliciously rip off my summer jumpsuit. His weight crushed my petite frame to the floor so much so that I couldn’t move. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t create enough wiggle space to escape his 6’2 lanky stature. With his free hand he pushed his fingers inside me with such ferocity that a loud scream escaped my mouth before I could even discern what was happening.

Author Interview:

What inspired you to write The Last Ten Pounds?

My memoir, The Last Ten Pounds, started off as a personal project to help me process, deal with and heal from the emotional traumas from my past. It originally started off as nothing more than scribbled notes in my journal. Before long, it had filled an entire book. That’s when I realized that my personal project was so much more than journal entries. It was meant to be shared with the world and maybe along the way help to inspire people in their own personal struggles.

When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

To be honest, I never wanted to be a writer. My first childhood memory when asked what I wanted to be when I grew up was that I wanted to be an artist. Soon after that I wanted to be an actress. I held on to that dream for many years. In junior high and high school, I was involved in the drama club. I even spent one summer enrolled in acting classes. But life happened and I soon let go of that dream. I’ve always been a creative person and I guess writing is an outlet for me to express my creativity just as acting did. I don’t believe in coincidences, so I can’t say I accidentally became a writer. I think it was in me along along to become a writer.

What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

The earliest age I remember reading my first book was when I was ten years old. I was in grade five and one of my classmates introduced me to a book series called The Babysitter’s Club. I was hooked from the first book that I read. The series is based on four young girls who are navigating through the ups and downs of their pre-pubescent years. There was boy, family and friendship drama. I could relate to these characters in so many ways especially with one of the girls named Claudia. Her character was Japanese-American and myself being Vietnamese-Canadian, it felt so nice to be able to immerse myself in a series that had an Asian girl as one of the main characters. In addition, these girls were young business entrepreneurs running their own babysitting club. Myself being an over achiever, I aspired to be like those girls and dreamed of owning my own business one day. When I think of The Babysitter’s Club, I’m hit with nostalgia because as turbulent as my childhood was, reading those books was my way of escapism.

What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

I enjoy reading memoirs because there is so much truth and vulnerability when one chooses to share their story with the world. I’m always curios to learn about some else’s’ experience. As they say, everyone has a story. The unfortunate part is not enough people write and share theirs. I also enjoy reading spiritual/self-help books. I’m a big fan of Krishnamurti, Lao Tzu, Wayne Dyer and Eckhart Tolle. I do enjoy a good fiction now and again. The last fiction I read was a book by a Swedish author named Jonas Jonasson called The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared. It was very well written and absolutely hilarious. I would highly recommend this book. It has been made into a movie but I always find that the book is always better than the movie.

What is your favorite book?

My favorite book is Ishmael by Daniel Quinn. The book is a novel but the topic it covers is purely spiritual. It’s about a man who answers an ad only to stumble across an ape. The man is taken aback when he discovers that the ape can talk. Over the course of the book, they engage in many philosophical conversations about man and his relationship to the Earth. The message it conveys is so powerful that every chapter makes you stop to reflect on your own existence.

You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

It depends on what genre we’re talking about. For non-fiction, I would have to say, Krishnamurti. His teachings are very complex and at times hard to grasp. But he is the real deal when it comes to spiritual gurus. For fiction, I go through phases where I’ll read only one author and then when I’m finish reading their books I move onto another author. For example, I went through a Dan Brown phase where I couldn’t get enough of his books because I loved how every chapter he writes ends in a cliffhanger and keeps the reader so engaged. I also like the topic of his books based around secret societies and symbolism. Then I went through a Wally Lamb phase where I read all his books and fell in love with the way he developed his characters so vividly. There’s so many great authors out there that it’s hard to have one favorite.

If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

I would travel back to the conception of our planet to see how it all began. I think it would be interesting to see the very moment when our planet was created and what the first life form on Earth was. At the same time, I would love to see how it all ends.

When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

Personally for myself, I find that creativity comes in waves. When I’m riding the wave, I try to stay on as long as possible and I find that the words come to page seamlessly. When the wave is gone or some might see this as writer’s block, I disengage from the writing process and focus on other aspects of my life and catch the next wave when it comes.

Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

Yes! I have a two-year-old Shih-Tzu named Bobo. He’s the love of my life. I’m the biggest dog lover ever. This never use to be the case because growing up I used to be terrified of dogs.  I touch upon this in my book when I say, “when you get over your fears, there is nothing but unconditional love waiting on the other side.”

What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?
This is an easy question. Chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate! But I only like dark chocolate. I like the 85-90% range. Does that make me weird?

Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Yes. I would like to share with you and the reader’s one of my blog posts I wrote called Conquering Fear with Creativity:

Structure is nothing but stunted growth of fear hiding itself and inhibiting your fullest potential to flourish and create. We are all creative beings. Listen to the flow of the river and you shall see that it doesn’t lay stagnant, instead it moves as a current. Let your inner compass guide you and don’t stay stagnant, even for a second. For the minute you stay stagnant you inhibit your personal growth, and if you do this then the light of your creativity will perish into the darkness.

We are all creative beings. Let’s not forget our purpose and why we are here. Do not let one single person stunt your creativity because they are too consumed in their own darkness to achieve and create. Step into the light. Love, dance, sing, draw, laugh and create. That is our only purpose here. To stunt your creativity is to kill your soul. We are not concrete and abstract. We are artistic and bend whichever way our heart desires. Bend with your heart. Cry with your heart. Do not shut down your heart, for your heart will bleed and beg for mercy. Do not shut down the very reason why you are here. You are here but only momentarily … for a smidgeon of a second. Then your star will be replicated by another. How do you want to exist? Ask yourself that. Do you want to fill up your day consumed in nonsense or open up your heart to feel, create and fulfill the very essence of why you were put here? We all exist for a reason. Emma G. Loves Boyz: A True Love Journal
by Taro Meyer
ENRE:  YA/Middle Grade

BLURB:

Emma G. is CRAZY about Aaron, lead singer of Boyz3000. Of course, she doesn’t actually know him, but so what? Feelings are feelings. That is until Josh appears… and he’s soooooo CUTE. Navigating her two crushes and her middle school life, especially with eighth-grade hater Renee around, is a challenge. And oh yeah, she’s got to earn money for an AWESOME trip to the Bahamas to see the band of her dreams. Hello???? How much can one thirteen-year-old take???

Excerpt:

OMG!!! My heart was racing like it was going crazy. Lights began flashing from everyone’s phones and people were Instagramming pictures of the band to their friends and posting them. I tried to take pictures but my hands were shaking so much from excitement that the pictures were blurry. Jenny wasn’t taking any either because she was shaking too. Everyone was screaming and yelling and crying. Two girls fainted and were carried out to get some water.

I was screaming too. I took a selfie of me screaming and then one of Jenny screaming. Her mouth was open so wide I think I was taking a picture of her tonsils!!!

I could see all the Boyz3000 faces very clearly because we were so close up, but especially Aaron’s. I was watching him and trying to take his picture while I was screaming, but my hands were still shaking too much to get good shots, so I stopped trying and just watched him. His expressions were sooo sincere as he sang. His cute hair was falling over his eyes and those eyes were sooo adorable. And his collar was open on his shirt, and I could even see the sweat on his neck.

The drummer, Pete, was setting a great rhythm, and Cory, the bass player that Jenny loves, was twirling and leaping, and then he was leaning back, playing his bass like he was the greatest rock star in the universe. And then Jenny started screaming even louder than before, and she was jumping up and down and her arms were waving at the bass player!

And then…

Boyz3000 started to come down onto the runway that we were right next to.

Everyone was trying to reach out to them and I was right on the aisle and reaching out too.

And then it happened…
