Peace. Love. Order. Dome. That’s the motto that the Order has given the residents of Dome 1618 to live by. Natalia Greyes is a resident of Dome 1618, a covered city protected from the deadly radiation that has poisoned the world outside for four generations. Nat never questioned the Order, until one day she sees a stranger on the outside of the dome. Now Nat wants answers. Is there life outside the dome and if so, what has the Order been hiding from everyone?

My Review:

Today is Natalia “Nat” Greyes birthday and she is eighteen. Today is the first day of the rest of her life. Nat starts her new job today but before she has to enter into the adult world Nat is going to visit her special place at the edge of the dome. Nat lives inside of Dome 1618, a covered protected city.

The dome has protected them from radiation poison for many, many years longer than Nat has been alive. Nat has been going to her special place since the day she lost her parents nine years ago. She knows she is breaking the rules by going there and will be severely punished if she is caught.  On this day Nat is almost caught when she spots a couple of people on the outside of the dome and one of them is captured and brought inside the dome.

Now Nat has lots of questions as to how are these two guys living on the outside when they are not wearing protective clothing to keep them safe from the radiation poison? Nat has a very inquisitive mind and so is determined to find out. But first she has to get to her new job she doesn’t want to be late on the first day.

Nat doesn’t know what she wants to do with the rest of her life or what job she wants to do unlike her two best friends Zara and Jak so Nat gets to try a few jobs until she finds the right one. But this doesn’t last long before she is uprooted from her apartment where she has lived with her Grandparents since losing her parents.  She is taken to work in the Science department where her parents worked and with some of the same people who worked with them as well.

Nat soon learns that there is more going on in the dome than meets the eye. Nat like everyone else has been taught all their lives that the dome is protecting them but that just might not be the exact truth. And what she was told about what happened to her parents all those years ago may not be the truth either.

With her inquisitive mind Nat has a lot of questions as to what is going on but luckily she just may be working in the right department and building and among the right people with all the answers. Nat is a very strong willed person and will not stop until she gets the answers she wants. If she doesn’t it won’t be because she didn’t give it her all.

I knew when I read the summary that I was going to love There Once Were Stars but I didn’t realize just how true that was. Once I started I couldn’t put it down literally. My kindle stayed with me all day until I had turned the last page. I read There Once Were Stars in one day it was that good. I couldn’t believe it when I got to the end. I wanted more. Although lots of questions were answered I still have more. I would like to know more about the virus and how it started. I would like to know more about Nat’s parents her uncle and who they were and what really happened to them. I would also like to know where Nat’s Uncle was all those years.

I would definitely recommended There Once Were Stars to anyone who loves to read dystopian novels. Even if you don’t give it a try anyway who knows you might just like it. It may be a dystopian novel but there is a great under the dome.

Chapter 17

* * * Symone * * *

Nile’s whole body screamed uneasiness, but he smiled at Marie with veneration. Grabbing my hand, he rushed us toward the opening. My team members plunged off the edge. Nile clutched my palm tighter; we aborted together. My stomach somersaulted. Good thing I’d eaten a light breakfast. Even though Marie had taken us lower, we were still higher than I thought.

Expel the chute, Nile said in my mind. I did, shortly after him, the force jolted me upward. I saw several of the crew land safely. Nile and I glided harmlessly to the ground.

I glanced up to the sky. The two Polar vessels were about to open fire on us. Marie geared our craft higher in pursuit. She blasted multiple rounds on one, miraculously taking them out. The second was still headed our way. Blue beams zipped around us. I took a nosedive. A multitude of mountains surrounded the area, but we would never reach them in time. Marie engaged but couldn’t penetrate their shield. They were right on us. Nowhere to escape, I feared our impending demise. There was no cover, only mounds of snow. My comrades attempted to shoot their guns at the Polar vessel. Pointless. Marie increased her speed, flying straight toward our attackers.

“What’s she doing?” I yelled over to Nile.

“Marie! Don’t!” Nile shouted.

My stomach clenched. Marie crashed the ship head first into the Polar craft. Neither her shield nor theirs could withstand that kind of concussion. Both crafts buckled and reverberated against each other. Metal and fragments of the ships dispersed as the vessels caused a massive explosion.

The sound was all that existed until it was joined by a rain of fire and debris that splayed everywhere. Kumar’s screams pierced the remaining echo of the explosion, searing through my soul. Why was life always so messed up?

My eyes watered. Nile wiped his quickly. My breath lingered in front of me in a white vapor as I exhaled heavily. The heated body suit I wore worked to keep me warm. Only my face could feel the freezing weather. The temperature was bearable.

We didn’t have time to grieve. Nile’s command snapped us to attention to deal with the reality we faced. Nile looked at his telecom. He hit the pad, studying our location. He looked over at me and Kumar, who was standing next to me, dazed. His eyes were red and glazed.

“Now that we are on land, we’ll divert to Plan B. We head northeast.” Nile pointed. “That’s the main hostage facility. We’ll meet up with Syira and the other land teams there to help rescue the hostages.”

“The Polars are coming!” Haymitch yelled.

A slew of them were running full speed in our direction. “Everyone get into formation!” Nile demanded. Our team formed a diamond shape, each of us touching back to back. Our lasers rose. The sky was at war battle and it was a warzone on the ground. Chaos in three hundred and sixty degrees. “Fire!”

Defragmenting Daniel: The Organ Scrubber
by Jason Werbeloff
GENRE: Sci-fi Thriller

BLURB:

7 stolen organs.
1 vengeful victim.
A gruesome sci-fi thriller.

Organ scrubbing was a bloody job, but somebody had to do it. Daniel, an orphan from the Gutter, was put to work scrubbing kidneys at aged twelve. The job had its perks: a warm bed, Law and Order reruns, and an all-you-can-eat Mopane worm buffet.

Until the Orphanage stole Daniel’s parts, and sold them on the organ market.

Now Daniel has grown up, and yearns to become whole again. The cybernetic organ replacements just aren’t the same – he needs his parts back. But the new owners of his organs won’t give them up. Not without a fight.

Just how far will Daniel go to regain his missing pieces? And how much more of himself will he lose along the way?

Defragmenting Daniel is a cyberpunk crime thriller that will unnerve you. Every part of you.

“A work of great imagination. Powerful and gripping.”
“A stark and moving experience.”

ReadersFavorite.com, 5 Star Review

Excerpt:

“You feel that, son?”

“No siw,” Daniel mouthed. His tongue was numb. Had been numb since they’d replaced it with the generic a year ago, but it felt more swollen than usual. Clumsy against his palate.

“That’s good. Try to relax.” The surgeon’s voice was deep and quick. Like a scythe. “Music, nurse.”

With Daniel’s head turned the way it was, he looked directly into the surgeon’s crotch. He tried to turn away, but his head had been immobilized.

A beat Daniel remembered from somewhere rolled through the operating theatre. The bass vibrated along the legs of the steel table, up, into the brace that pierced his skull, down, through its metallic fingers, and into his brain. It tickled.

The surgeon shifted. A nurse’s masked face replaced the crotch. “Don’t move.” Only her eyes showed above the mask. The doctors and nurses all looked the same with their masks on. How do they tell one another apart?

A grainy woman’s voice hissed through the beat.

We had you cleaned

We had you eat

The high-pitched whine of a bone saw echoed in Daniel’s skull. “We’ll have you open in no time,” said the surgeon.

Daniel felt pressure against his temple, above his right ear. The whine of the blade morphed to a lower, choppy grind.

We had you bathed

We had your feet

Yes, he remembered the song now. It was all the rage in the cafeteria on Friday nights, when they cleared the chairs to make room for an ad hoc dance floor.

“How the kids?”

“Good, thanks doctor. Jordan’s starting school next week.”

“Already?”

Daniel tried to swallow, but lying on his back with his head fixed at this angle, most of the saliva dribbled onto the operating table.

We ate your lungs

We heart your beat

The bone saw slowed to a toothy stop.

There was a hollow metal twang, as something red dropped into a metal bowl on the edge of Daniel’s vision.

“You doing okay there, boy?”

“Yeth, ma’am.”

The surgeon bent down. Peered into Daniel’s eyes.

“We’re in. Won’t be too much longer now.”

Excerpt

C  H A  P  T  E  R    O N E

Midnight
Twenty minutes to midnight, and the ice on the frozen lake outside cracked. The loud reverberations of winter echoed through the night and invaded Danny Lahti’s peace.
Danny was prepared to let time  move  forward  in   whatever incremental way  it chose. At that moment . . . sitting on a sofa  in  an enormous  room  near  midnight  .  .  .  huddled  within  a  century-old hunting lodge  of a long-dead lumber tycoon . . . on  the shoreline of a lake  nearly forgotten in  the isolated woods of  northern Wisconsin, Danny Lahti was not concerned about the potential for a technological apocalypse as time turned to the year  2000.
But  he  did   feel   on   the  brink. Something was   about to  happen. Things should change;  they needed to change. He  couldn’t  really say why.   Danny never  felt he  was   the   introspective  type.  But he   had always felt connected to a larger universe, one  in  which he  received premonitions of what was to come.
The  end  of the century. Or maybe the start of a new  millennium. It depended on  the pundit. But  computers only  knew what they were programmed to  know, and   they weren’t  programmed to  deal   with changing from 1999  to 2000.  Maybe early computer  scientists never thought about a century starting anew. December 31, 1999  could prove an  existential threat. They called it “Y2K.” Who knows, maybe every generation deserved its opportunity to restart the clock.
For   Danny,  his   past  was   too  painful,  but   the  future  felt  too uncertain. In a way,  his life could be the snowdrift-covered lawns that surrounded  this house. On  the surface, the drifts were unblemished and  glistening in the weak  moonlight. But beneath their surface, under the  shapeless accumulated flakes,  were the  remains of years of living. If Danny had  the time and  the tools and  the  energy, he  could shovel his  way  into discovering the   dead flowerbeds, the   abandoned lawn furniture, and  the  century’s worth of trails across the  grounds. But who could be  bothered?  Eventually, the warm sun  of  spring would surely melt the snow. Just wait. The  past would be exposed.
Danny had  always been the kind  of person willing to wait. When he was only  twelve, his mother committed suicide and  he found her dead body. He  waited then,  always expecting someone  would eventually arrive  to  explain  what  had   happened  and   why.   When  his   father withdrew   into   a   hermit-like   life    that   barely  acknowledged  his adolescent son’s existence, Danny still waited. Someone would surely make his  father forget his  dead wife  and  remember his  child. He  was still waiting.
And  when Josh  came into his  life,  promising an  escape from these cold  woods into the warm, loving life  of the Los  Angeles sun,  Danny followed and  waited for Josh’s direction.
He  waited. He  always had.  Perhaps he  always would. It was  his nature not to rebel and  not to question, to try to be good  and  not rock the   boat.   A  new   year, a  new   century, a  new   millennium, not even “Y2K” could change that. Because Danny Lahti had  never been able  to find  the  energy to  grab the  reins of his  own  life. And  he  didn’t intend to start now.  And  yet something was changing. He felt it.
The  ice cracked again.  Nineteen minutes to midnight.
