Book Trailer:

My Review:

ASP Ascension is about a sixteen year old girl Terry Hughes. Her name is actually Nefertari but don’t tell anyone because Terry really hates being called by her real name. Poor Terry lost her mother about a year ago in an accident while they were looking for Cleopatra’s sarcophagus. Her mother spent her whole life nearly looking for Cleopatra’s sarcophagus and died for it. Terry loved her mother very much and misses her every single day. Terry’s mom and dad is archaeologist and so she grew up with the love of ancient Egypt. Terry knows more about ancient Egypt than anyone in her new school.

Terry doesn’t want to go to a brick and mortar school she wants to stay home and take online classes. But her dad insist that she go to school and be with other kids her own age and he knows she just needs to be with people more than ever right now especially since the anniversary of her mother’s death is so close. Terry tries her best to stay invisible at school but it is impossible when you are the daughter of a famous archaeologist who is in town working at the museum setting everything up for an unveiling of Cleopatra’s sarcophagus. But Terry does meet a very good person a girl Maude who becomes her best friend. She also has the opportunity of meeting and being partners with the school jock Zach. But alias he has a girlfriend the mean girl of the school Allison.

Allison is very popular and has her groupies who follow her around all day and help her to beat up other girls in the bathroom which is very old school as they say. If it has been done before then you can bet your bottom dollar Allison has done it too when it comes to her bathroom secessions or even out of the bathroom as well. Allison is one girl you want to try and avoid at all cost.

When Terry’s dad ends up in a coma one night while working late at the museum; Terry is the only one who can save him. A woman her dad works with tells Terry that her dad is in a coma because of the curse of Cleopatra and Terry is the only one who can break it. Terry must solve a fifty year old case of Cleopatra’s missing ASP. If she finds the ASP then she can break the curse and her dad will be ok. Can she find the missing ASP before time runs out? Will she lose her dad only a year after losing her mother? Will her and her new friends save her father?

When I first signed up to do this tour I didn’t think I wanted to read ASP Ascension. Well it was more like I didn’t have time but you know it is quite amazing how you can find the time when you really want to read something. After checking the book out further by reading the preview on Goodreads I was like I got to read this book. So I set out to find that little bit of extra time. How you say? Well by reading the books on my tbr list at the time faster. And how did I do that? By putting more time in to my reading but I actually think I just got lucky and had some really good books that read faster than some. You know what I mean?

I am really glad that I check ASP Ascension out further before throwing it to the side. I plan on do this a lot more in the future. Thanks Goodreads for having a preview of the book and thanks to the author B.R. Myers and YA Bound Book Tours for giving me this opportunity to read ASP Ascension and I can’t wait to read more of Nefertari Hughes Mystery’s in the future.

I highly recommend ASP Ascension to anyone who loves a good mystery and have a love for ancient Egypt. Or maybe just Cleopatra and Mark Anthony.

Cynical private investigator Atticus Wynn and his idealistic partner Rosemary Sanchez will stop at nothing to save a damaged boy, even when it means taking on a pair of professional killers and a gang of outlaw bikers in this action-packed and gallows-humored mystery thriller prequel to The Black Song Inside.

When Atticus and Rosemary are hired for the seemingly routine job of finding Imran Khan, a runaway from San Diego’s posh Barrington Academy for troubled teens, the detectives quickly discover this case will be anything but routine.

Imran wasn’t running away from the rigid rules of Barrington, he was running into the arms of an enigmatic beauty who goes to great lengths to stay in the shadows. As soon as Atticus and Rosemary learn of this mystery woman, they’re targeted by a brutal outlaw biker gang.

When the detectives finally meet their employers in person, Imran's parents, the pieces fall into place.  They discover a family seething with rage, an abused boy seeking love, and a secret so powerful, it blows the lid off the case.  A dark world of dirty money, deadly spies, and double-crosses is brought to light, forcing Atticus and Rosemary to question whether Imran is an innocent victim or a violent avenger.

The detectives will need all of Atticus's street smarts and Rosemary's combat experience to survive as they race down a road of blood and broken people toward a showdown where the very boy they've sworn to save is the person most likely to get them killed.

EXCERPT

Rosemary Sanchez’s phone rang, or to be more accurate, warbled into song. Specifically, Muddy Waters famous blues tune “Mannish Boy,” which she had not programmed into it. It started at the part that refers to the singer’s destiny to become “the greatest man alive.” She snorted. That Atticus.

Clad in jeans and a gray T-shirt that read ARMY across the front, she’d been in the midst of her daily bed-making duel with her nemesis, her tortoiseshell cat Mawroo, who with feline telepathy, always anticipated the moment she began to make her bed. As the sheet came billowing down, Mawroo leapt onto the mattress. The cat-hump raced around beneath the sheet like a gopher in a cartoon, all the while uttering her namesake cry, “Maaaaawrooooo!” Rosemary could only answer such an affront to bed-making etiquette by scrabbling her fingers about so that the hump raced hither and thither after them, sometimes rolling over to create four paw tent poles, claws poking through the sheet.

Rosemary answered the phone while, in protest at the interruption, Mawroo “mawrooed”!

“Let me guess,” Rosemary said. “You made one too many smartass remarks, and now we’re barred from Barrington.”

“Scoff, scoff,” Atticus said.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” she asked.

“I wanted to scoff at your lack of faith, but I’ve only read about people scoffing and never actually seen it. Thus, I don’t know how one would actually go about scoffing in real life. So I improvised.”
“I don’t know whether it’s more disturbing to think you’ve been pondering that for a while or that you just thought it up.”

“Either someone’s playing a violin with a meat tenderizer,” he said, “or you are foolishly trying to make your bed with Mawroo in the room.”

“I don’t have a choice,” Rosemary said. “She sulks all day if I shut her out.”

“How can one tell if a cat is sulking or just being a cat?”

“When one loves another being and is in a close relationship, one pays attention and thus becomes quite attuned to the being’s sensibilities.”

“Are we still talking about a cat here?” Atticus asked.

“Meow,” Rosemary answered.

“Um, er, normally, I’d be game for the metaphorical banter, but I happen to have a gentleman tailing me. I’m hoping you can come out here and tail my tailer.”

Rosemary’s tone switched from banter to business. “Already someone following you? Feel dangerous?”

“Can’t tell,” he said, “but it’s hard to see what I could have done so quickly to make someone want to hurt me.”

“You’ve never been on the other side of your smart mouth.”

“Anyway,” he said, “once you’ve got him, I’ll lose him.”

“And I’ll follow him back to his criminal lair.”

“Criminal lair?” he asked.

“Yes,” she said. “Any criminal associated with Barrington Academy wouldn’t have anything as uncouth as a hideout. He would merit a lair.”

“Brains as well as beauty,” he said. “Brains enough that once this ne’er do well is ensconced in his lair, you wouldn’t dream of doing something as stupid as trying to get a real good looksee before you’ve called your charming partner in for back up, right?”

“You do recall I’ve done a tour of duty in a war zone?”

“And I know you’re going back soon,” Atticus said, his voice tight, “which I don’t like to even think about. My point is that neither of us should take any unnecessary risks.”

“But that’s my specialty.”

“Computers are your specialty. That’s why we joined forces. Risk-taking is your addiction.”

“Fine, if you’re going to be such a big butt about it, I’ll play it all careful and boring.”

Atticus sighed. “All I ask is that you be as concerned about your safety as I am.”

Rosemary ended the call as Mawroo scooted from beneath the sheet, paused, and then suddenly realized it was absolutely imperative she get out of the room as quickly as possible. She galloped through the door and made it all of three feet into the hall before lying down, licking her paws, and rubbing her little baseball head with her wet feet.

Grinning at the kitty’s antics, Rosemary threw her hair into a braid, wriggled into her jeans, and headed out the door to her silver Ford Fiesta ST. Fifteen minutes later, Rosemary texted Atticus that she was in position behind the tail.

About the Author

Carlyle Clark was raised in Poway, a city just north of San Diego, but is now a proud Chicagolander working in the field of Corporate Security and writing crime and fantasy fiction. He has flailed ineffectually at performing the writer's requisite myriad of random jobs: pizza deliverer, curb address painter, sweatshop laborer, day laborer, night laborer, security guard, campus police, Gallup pollster, medical courier, vehicle procurer, and signature-for-petitions-getter.

He is a married man with two cats and a dog. He is also a martial arts enthusiast and a CrossFit endurer who enjoys fishing, sports, movies, TV series with continuing storylines, and of course, reading. Most inconsequentially, he holds the unrecognized distinction of being one of the few people in the world who have been paid to watch concrete dry in the dark. Tragically, that is a true statement.

He’s big. He’s bad. And he only wants one thing.
Revenge.
Ric Ryker spent years being called “Big Dick.”
Ridiculed for his weight, shunned by all the pretty girls, snubbed by all the cool guys.
But after a secret journey of transformation, he’s back—ready to take over leadership from his father at Ryker Arms—with an impressive new physique and a plan to prove them all wrong.
Especially her.
The one woman who hurt him the most.
Annalesa—smart, sassy, stunning.
And his stepsister.
The girl he could never have.
The girl who wouldn’t look twice at him anyway—especially in front of her stuck-up friends.
Now he’s going to make her want him.
Show her just what she was missing.
And hurt her, just like she hurt him.
He’s got the weapon and he’s taken aim—but he didn’t count on his own heart getting caught in the crossfire.

EXCERPT

“Leesa, I’m still not so sure this is a good idea…” Ric looked down at her, a frown turning the corners of his perfect mouth down just slightly. “I don’t know what to think.”
“Please trust me.” She kissed his chest, rubbing her cheek there, her voice almost a whisper. “I should have tried harder. I should have told you how I felt. I should have been brave then, I know.”
“Oh Leesa.” His lips brushed the top of her head.
“But I wasn’t brave then. And I’m sorry, Ric. I’m so sorry. I’ve been sorry every single day we’ve been apart, every minute that you were out of my reach.”
“Oh Christ.” He sighed.
“But you have to understand something.” She lifted her face and met his eyes, squaring her shoulders. “There are only so many times I can explain, only so many ways I can apologize. I know what happened… it made you feel awful, and I’m sorry you were hurt. But Ric—I never did any of it on purpose. I never, ever set out to hurt you.”
“I know.”
She felt weightless as he lifted her onto the ledge of the booth, feeling the warmth of his palms through the thin cotton of her top as he kept his hands around her waist.
“So you forgive me?” She knew the question was in her eyes as she put her arms around his neck.
“If we do this…” His thumbs stroked her belly, on either side of her navel, a delicious distraction. “I need to trust you. Completely.”
“Okay.” She nodded, her heart soaring at the possibility. She wouldn’t have admitted it to her closest friend or even confessed it to a priest on her death bed before this moment, but this, with Ric, was what she wanted, what she’d always wanted.
“We’ll have to keep it secret.” His thumbs brushed beneath her top, stroking her bare skin. He looked over his shoulder, checking they were alone. “At least, for a while.”
“Yeah.” She winced, not relishing the thought of telling their parents.
“Leesa, I really need to trust you.” His grip tightened, his fingers digging into her sides so hard it almost hurt. He was so strong! “I imagine our relationship’s going to be tested. A lot.”
“I know.” She nodded vigorously, agreeing, the word ‘relationship’ from his mouth secretly thrilling her. “Ric, I promise, I—”
“I mean it. This isn’t a joke. Don’t make promises you can’t keep.” His harsh words jarred her senses but he didn’t let her go. His hands were under her shirt now, fully on her skin, his big palms spreading heat through her whole body. “Because, I may ask you to prove it, Leesa.”
“I will,” she breathed, straightening her spine so she could get her lips closer to his. “I swear, I’ll do whatever I have to, to prove my feelings for you, this time.”
“Good.” He gave her a slow, weary smile, and then he kissed her, his mouth soft and open, not demanding anymore.
“What now?” she breathed as they parted. If he’d wanted to take her right then, right there, she would have done whatever he asked.
“We take it slow.” He rested his forehead against hers. “And keep us a secret.”
“Us.” She smiled at that.
“You up for more target practice?” He smiled, too, glancing down at her gun as he took a step back.
“I’ll probably miss the target entirely.” She grinned, sliding off the ledge and putting her hands to her flushed cheeks. “But it’s probably a good idea for me to cool down a little before we leave.”
Ric helped her relax into her stance and, with the weight of their conflict gone, she went on to make six bullseyes out of ten shots on the next two targets, and the remaining shots clustered close around the center.
“Damn, girl.” Ric clapped. “I’m impressed. Remind me not to give you any reason to shoot at me.”
“You’re the last person I’d want to shoot at.” She smiled and emptied the last cartridges out of the magazine, handing them back to him, along with the gun. “At least, most of the time.”
“Except when I’m being a dick?” He snorted and she laughed as he led them back to the armory to check in their weapons.

Author Bio:

Alison Mello is a wife and stay at home mom to a wonderful little boy. She lives with her amazing family in Massachusetts. She loves playing soccer, basketball and football with her son.
After having her son, Alison started reading again and fell in love with Contemporary Romance. Reading made her happy and gave her something to do when she had downtime. As she started to read more, she started to noticed things she really enjoyed in a book and things she didn’t. She began to have ideas for writing one of her own. One day she literally woke up and started writing. She realized that if there was ever a time for her to write, it was now. She had a part time job to give her something to do. The hours at work were slow and she was bored with what she was doing, so while her son was off enjoying his friends over summer vacation she got started.

Alison finished the first book in two weeks and decided that she really enjoyed writing, so she kept going. She already had ideas in mind for books two and three, so she kept writing. That is how the Learning to Love Series was born. Somewhere along the line, one of my Beta readers convinced me that Michael, a character from Finding Love, needed his own story. That is when Alison added the fourth and final book. Alison hopes you enjoy her books as much as she enjoyed writing them.

She’s so glad she started this writing journey and hopes you will stay with her for the ride. Chasing Dreams is scheduled to release in April and the first two books of the Love Conquers Life series will be out this summer!

Virtual Book Tour + #Giveaway: Less Than Human by Allen Long @GoddessFish

Less Than Human
by Allen Long
GENRE: Memoir

BLURB:

In Less than Human, Allen Long tells the story of his often nightmarish childhood in the wealthy suburbs of D.C., the wonders and mysteries of teenage love, his ill-advised journeys into corporate America and a hellish marriage, and ultimate breakdown.  And yet, his story is mostly one of triumph.  He draws strength from the joys of fatherhood, he finds true love in his second marriage, and through working with psychotherapists and leading a life rich in self-examination, he overcomes both child abuse and the resulting PTSD, finally learning that instead of being less than, he is, indeed, human.

Less than Human follows an unconventional path, arranged as much by theme and association as by chronology.  These stories take many forms, from driving narrative to lyrical reverie, at times evoking mythic overtones, and this variety, along with an unflinching confrontation with the conditions and consequences of childhood abuse, create its own form of suspense--in what direction will this book take us next?

EXCERPT:

I remember only a fragment of our lunch conversation.  Sophia, who used to work at the textile design firm where Elizabeth was employed, brought up the name of a colleague who was agonizing about whether he was gay.

Elizabeth surprised me by saying, “If he can’t make up his mind, I’ll make it up for him—he’s definitely gay.”  There was absolutely no malice or derision in her voice; she simply stated what seemed an obvious fact.

I laughed, pleased by her presumptuous humor.  Also, a few weeks later, the co-worker in question came out of the closet and has seemed contentedly gay ever since.

After lunch, Sophia made a quick getaway and Elizabeth and I stood in the parking garage near her black cherry Dodge Shadow and talked for another hour and a half.  Again, I remember only one snippet of this conversation.

“I have to tell you how important my daughter Stephanie is to me,” she said.  “We’re best friends, I love her dearly, and she’s my number one priority.”

“I understand.  That’s how I feel about my boys,” I said.

Tears glazed Elizabeth’s eyes, but she didn’t cry.  I felt such a strong connection to her I trembled.

“Would you like it if I called you?” I asked.

“Yes, very much,” she said.

We hugged and fell in love.

Author Interview:

What inspired you to write Less than Human: A Memoir?

I started out writing a magazine-length memoir called “Soul Breach,” which was about my anger and disgust about the dishonesty and corruption I observed when I worked in the management consulting sector of the business world.  A writer/editor friend told me he thought it was the best piece I’d ever written compared to several short stories I’d published, and he encouraged me to write more memoirs.  So I wrote a series of memoirs about the most dramatic high and low points of my life, and suddenly my whole life story was on paper and I realized I’d written a book.

When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

I think I’ve always known.  I’ve been telling stories for as long as I can remember.  My brother and I had separate bedrooms, but summers we would sleep in twin beds in the basement, and I told him a story every night after lights out that I made up on the spot.  And I could always be counted on to tell great ghost stories.  When I was in sixth grade, my teacher invited me to write a short story a week instead of completing the regular English assignments.

What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

I remember reading a series of books about Freddy the Pig when I was about 10.  I also read a bunch of Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew mysteries when I was young.  In addition, I read several books of horror stories compiled by Alfred Hitchcock when I was in elementary school.

What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

I read memoirs, literary novels and short story collections, and detective novels, a guilty pleasure.

What is your favorite book?

I have so many.  My favorite recent book is the novel All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr.  He combines great storytelling with beautiful use of language.

You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

I really enjoy short story masters such as Alice Munro, William Trevor, Tessa Hadley, and Tobias Wolff.  I’ve also enjoyed all the books I’ve read by Rick Russo.  My hands-down favorite writer when I was a teen was Ray Bradbury.  He told wonderful stories using beautiful language.  He’s probably the first writer who     got me thinking about writing stories versus just telling them.

If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

I’m pretty fascinated by John Adams and the American Revolution, so that would be really interesting to observe.  Also, it would be fun to be in Paris during the Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and Gertrude Stein era.  And, of course, I’d like to go back in time to see the dinosaurs.

When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

Memoirs are my natural form and come easy.  Fiction is slower and harder for me, but I really like creating a work of art out of nothing when I write a successful short story.

Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

I have a beloved 1.5 year old golden retriever named Ruby.

What is your "to die for", favorite food/foods to eat?

I love cheeseburgers, but they are too fattening to eat often.

Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Focus on producing a quality piece of writing instead of rushing to publish.  The fastest way to get published is to have a high-quality piece of writing to market.  I once took five years to perfect a short story.  It was accepted for publication almost immediately.  Also, I wrote six complete drafts of Less than Human over five years.  I finished the book in July 2015, and I had a book contract in hand a month later, and my publisher accepted the book as is, with no edits required.  This is a hard lesson for young eager writers to learn, but it’s a valuable one.

AUTHOR BIO:

EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT FROM: The Sheik's Untraditional Lover by Leslie North

Belle Reynolds could feel her cheeks warming. How did she get herself into these things?

It was obvious that Sheik Zafar hadn’t been told that she was to be the lead architect. It was equally obvious Zafar wasn’t happy about it, but his dad seemed more than pleased.

Sheik Ahmadi looked a lot like his son—both tall men, lean and handsome. Zafar was a touch taller than his father with dark hair that curled slightly on the ends and golden eyes that reminded her of a lion. A little too much like a lion since he left her feeling like a fat zebra he was watching with a mixture of animosity and calculation. He was watching her with a mixture of animosity and calculation. Well, if he thought she could be intimidated, he was wrong. She wasn’t going to be a zebra, she’d turn herself into one of those ugly wildebeests who could best a lion. She had to stifle a snort at the idea.

Zafar shot her a narrow-eyed glance, as if he disapproved of levity, but he turned to the sheik. “Father, it is good to see you so early in the day. You don’t often take breakfast.”

“We don’t often have such a charming guest in residence.” The sheik seated himself. Zafar filled a glass with coffee from a carafe, and Belle sat down again, too. She was still trying to figure out the dynamic here.

Zafar Tadros was one of the most gorgeous men she’d ever met. He had a classic profile—straight nose, strong jaw and high cheekbones. Hollywood would love him and those dark, brooding good looks. One glance at him and her heart had started pounding like she was a high school girl gazing at her first crush. She’d told herself to get it together, get over it and get to work. Work was what mattered—she had a chance to prove herself here and she wasn’t going to blow it.

She took a short breath now, smiled, and ate another date even thought she didn’t really like them—too sweet and sticky. She also gave Sheik Ahmadi a long, assessing glance—he was going to be her supporter, even if Zafar looked like he wanted to pack her bags and ship her home on the next flight out. “I’m ready to get to work right after breakfast,” she offered, hoping that would get her mind back where it was supposed to be. On work. Not on Zafar and the muscles she could see under that tight T-shirt of his.

Sheik Ahmadi rubbed his hands together. “Excellent. We should talk about some preliminary ideas and schedules. I think a week is good for you two to come up with initial sketches. Old and new. That is what I want to see. We want a complex that is so compelling even movie firms want to film there—it must become an icon of all that is good in Scaran. Our traditions and our future!”

Belle watched Zafar’s face go from suppressed anger to calculating. When she met his gaze again, she saw a look in his eyes that sent a shiver down her spine. He was plotting something—and he’d just dismissed her as any kind of problem.

Well, this problem would not be easy to solve.

Leslie North is the pen name for a critically-acclaimed author of women's contemporary romance and fiction. The anonymity gives her the perfect opportunity to paint with her full artistic palette, especially in the romance and erotic fantasy genres.

The truth of the matter is she loves her fictional persona, Leslie North, more than her normal, day-to-day persona! Her bestselling books focus on strong characters and particularly women who aren't afraid to challenge an alpha male. Inspired after years of travel, her stories are set all over the world, from the tough streets of Russia to the beautiful beaches of the middle east.

Leslie fell in love with romance when she first picked up a scrappy, dog-eared romance book from her local library. She began writing soon after and the rest, as they say, was history. She now lives in a cozy cottage on the British coast and enjoys taking long walks with her two Dalmatians, George and Fergie.

She LOVES reader feedback, and if you have any comments, don't hesitate to contact her via e-mail: leslie@leslienorthbooks.com.

I'm Social Too:

Elizabeth Lennox

USA Today (c) bestselling author Elizabeth Lennox writes contemporary romance novels featuring sheiks, business tycoons, royalty, and other sexy rich men. Her male lead characters are smart, driven and determined, but can still be sensitive and vulnerable. Elizabeth's female lead characters come from a variety of backgrounds. They are strong, intelligent and independent, while still feminine and caring.

Although Elizabeth wanted to be a romance novelist since the eighth grade, that dream only became a (paid) reality for her in 2009 and a full time job in 2012. Along the way, she received a BS in History and held different jobs in the real estate, government consulting, and financial industries. All during that time, though, she was always writing, using her personal experiences, dreams, and travels throughout the United States, Europe and the Caribbean as backdrops for her stories. To date, she has written over 80 books and sold over 1.7 million copies. Her free novellas have been downloaded over 2.9 million times since 2013.

Elizabeth lives in Virginia with her husband and two children. Their home is just outside of Washington, D.C., and many of her novels are set in this area.
