An Interview with Christina Leigh Pritchard

What inspired you to write C I N?

It came from a dream and an old saying told to me by the father of my boss.

When or at what age did you know you wanted to be a writer?

In elementary school, there was a contest. It was during that experience when it was made clear that this is what I wanted to do forever. However, I’d been writing and reading even before I could spell or read. I’d place a towel under the door thinking that would keep my family from seeing the light as I flipped through all my books each night. When that stopped working, I’d take them with me into the closet.

What is the earliest age you remember reading your first book?

Maybe 4? With My great-grandmother. She would become animated and encourage me to do the same.

What genre of books do you enjoy reading?

I think character oriented books. That’s not really a genre but if I can love and cry with them then I’m hooked.

What is your favorite book?

To this day, I still read Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli once a year.

You know I think we all have a favorite author. Who is your favorite author and why?

I kind of like them all. Any given day a different color could be my favorite. I’ve never been consistent. I love variety in all things.

If you could travel back in time here on earth to any place or time. Where would you go and why?

I would go back 12 years ago and make better decisions ;)

When writing a book do you find that writing comes easy for you or is it a difficult task?

Depends on the story. Fantasy stories can be hard as you have to build the scene without boring the reader.

Do you have any little fuzzy friends? Like a dog or a cat? Or any pets?

I have a family dog. My dog, Teacup, passed away.

What is your ""to die for"", favorite food/foods to eat?

PIZZA!!

Do you have any advice for anyone that would like to be an author?

Work really hard and try not to take criticism to heart, unless it is to become a better writer.

Excerpt:  From Stardust to Babylon

October moon casts a pool of suffused silver light onto my pillow as I wait with bated breath, bathing in its ethereal glow.
Presently the waiting is over. The room fills with his essence and a voice breaks through the ether.
`Let me look at you! `
I readily comply, tingling from head to toe as he skims purposefully over my limbs, clothing them in a sheath of living fabric.
There is no movement in the darkness thick like treacle. The temperature drops like a stone, yet warmth ignites my wanton spirit till smouldering flames dance through my spine.
I drift with each new breath upon another. Not a single part unaffected by the pure filtered love that permeates every pore.
A gentle tease of my lips and they awaken to that human hair sensation, delicate and soft. All the while I chase it, flicking the tip of my tongue back and forth as my heart skips and flutters to the dissonant sound of a lone branch rapping at my window.
My hand slips impatiently through the deep velvet black. He finally allows me to touch him. I caress the invisible; a flimsy cobweb on my fingertips to tantalize and tickle.
The curtain wafts to a midnight draft from the window. Shadows bobble and bounce around the room: trees waving, a headlamp flashing.
The echo of a taxi door slams in the street while raised voices and clacking high heel shoes break the stillness. And yet there is a moment strong and silent, a moment of divine gratification; a place he calls absolute, complete paradise, right here right now.
If only the moon would shine forever. If only time could be suspended.
“Please don`t leave me!” I beg with a whisper. “I`m scared you`ll be gone when I wake.”
My eyes grow heavy yet I fear to close them, suppressing tiredness for several more hours totally immersed in his love before I finally succumb to the restraints of my inferior body.
“I love you.” He whispers. “Now sleep!”

When I`m not writing I love spending time outdoors communing with nature and observing the wildlife; those inspired moments watching Autumn leaves in lowering sunlight while the birds squabble over their tea, and I munch through several large chunks of dark chocolate washed down with a hot mug of tea. I`m attracted to people from all walks of life who are kind, thoughtful and honest. I enjoy shopping trips and watching TV dramas, including Bates Motel, Downton Abbey and Mr Selfridge, but mostly I love Poldark…. (Well who doesn`t?) Book Blitz + #Giveaway: Liberation by Kate L. Mary @kmary0622 @XpressoTours

Liberation
Kate L. Mary
(Moonchild, #2)
Publication date: November 1st 2016
Genres: Post-Apocalyptic, Young Adult

From two-time award-winning author, Kate L. Mary, comes the sequel to MOONCHILD, “a much needed breath of fresh air in the world of YA fantasy.” After surviving the auction and a near death experience at the hands of Asher’s father, Scarlett Moon is more than ready for life to settle down, and with each passing day she starts to feel more at home in Columbus. Even with Asher ready for more than Scarlett can give, she manages to fall into a routine that almost feels like a normal life.

But one distress call is all it takes to destroy the serenity the group has managed to build.

As far as anyone knew, Paget had moved on with her life after storming out months ago, but the fear in her voice when she calls the warehouse tells a different story. Even though Scarlett never liked Asher’s ex to begin with, she can’t help feeling a little bit responsible for Paget’s situation.

Searching in the seediest part of the city, the group picks up clues as they try to piece together what might have happened. The more Scarlett learns about what the other woman has been through over the last few months, the more concerned she becomes. Even worse: there’s no sign of Paget anywhere in Columbus.

With all the clues pointing in one direction, the group leaves the city and heads for Hocking Hills. Only it seems the danger may have followed them, leaving nothing but death and destruction in its wake and putting Paget in more danger than ever before. As Scarlett learns more about the woman who used to hold Asher’s heart, she suddenly finds herself unable to deny how she really feels about him. Only, with Paget in trouble, Scarlett can’t help wondering if Asher might still have feelings for his ex.

EXCERPT:

He runs his hand down the side of my head, trailing my dark hair through his fingers. It’s gotten longer since we arrived in Columbus, down to the middle of my back, and when his hand reaches the end of my hair, his fingers brush against my arm. My skin tingles, and I take a deep, calming breath. How does he always do this?
“Moonchild,” he whispers, leaning even closer. “What’s with that name, anyway? I’ve been asking you for months, and you never answer me.”
His eyes burn into mine, and I swallow. I don’t like to share. I hate being vulnerable. Especially with Asher. But my head is spinning and he’s so close, and before I have a chance to even think about it, I blurt out the words, “It’s a nickname my mom gave me.”
He freezes and his eyes hold mine, but his expression is unreadable. “Your mom?”
A tiny voice buried deep in my brain tells me to stop talking. This is what I’ve been trying to avoid for the past five months. Opening myself up to Asher. Making our relationship more real. Sharing. He’s given so much of himself to me. Shared his entire past. His mom’s murder, his time in the pits, the murder he committed that got him sent to the mines. His father. All the details and painful memories and how they’ve affected him. But I’ve told him nothing other than general facts. My parents were killed, I was sent to an orphan home, I ran away and spent time picking pockets before being caught and sent to the mines. I’ve intentionally kept out all the emotional details.
But for some reason, right now, I don’t want to listen to that voice. Not while Asher’s eyes are burning into mine, making everything hazy. I feel drunk. Drunk on Asher.
“I’ve never been a good sleeper, even as a baby. I got my mom up at least three times a night until I was four. My dad called me a night owl.” I smile despite the stinging that has started at the back of my throat. “But my mom corrected him. She said I was just a child of the moon. Her own little Moonchild. It stuck.”
Asher’s expression is still blank, and he seems to be holding his breath, almost like he’s afraid the littlest sound will break the spell and I’ll curl into myself. He doesn’t want me to pull away from him, and even though I know I should, I don’t want to either. No one has ever been as welcoming and warm as Asher is.
“How did it end up on the wanted posters?” he whispers. “How did they find out about something like that?”
I wince and want to look away from him. His expression is unguarded, and it’s like he’s looking at me through a microscope.
“I don’t know,” I say softly. “Probably a neighbor or friend. Someone who knew my parents. I never told anyone at the orphan home or in the mines… I don’t know how they found out. But it hurts when I see it on the posters. It twists the memories I have of my mom into something ugly and—” I slam my mouth shut.
No. I’ve gone too far. I need to keep some of myself tucked away, hidden from Asher and his disarming smile.
The expression in his eyes is different now. There’s hope swimming in them now when he brushes my hair back, away from my face, the tips of his fingers barely grazing my cheek. A tremble moves through me, and I suck in a deep breath. I should leave while I still can. Being this close to Asher is never a good idea.

Excerpt

The smoke cloud now appeared in the lobby, growing into a portal. The remaining six jumped out. Both giants stepped forth. Blessed and Aganathin, who stood at six-foot-six and six-foot-eight respectively, looked like dwarfs next to the two twelve-foot giants.

“You’re not one of us, puny people,” said one giant in his deep voice that echoed throughout the lobby.”

“No, you’re right. We’re none of you at all,” said Blessed.

At that moment, Blessed’s fists and arms became coated with the Oramite material. With all his might, he punched the giant in the mid-section, bringing him down on his knees, grunting. The giant’s face was now within reach. Blessed cocked back for another punch and broke the giant’s helmet, sending him flying into the wall, unconscious.

Slaycick saw the other giant draw his weapon and before he could get a shot off, he ran with Mach speed towards the giant slicing through his arm with his Oramite sword. The armored suit of the giants was no match for the Oramite weapons. The giant’s arm fell off with the gun still inside his hand. He screamed, and his yell could be heard throughout the whole building. Slaycick sent one more slice with his sword across the giant’s leg, severing him at both kneecaps. Blood began gushing out onto the lobby floor.

“Let’s get to the elevators!” yelled Blessed. “I’m sure there’ll be more giants and soldiers on their way.”
As they headed to the elevators, the two soldiers from outside came charging in. K’nia spotted them and hit them with two Oramite stars shot from her hands. More soldiers were running into the main lobby only to see the two giants decommissioned and on the floor. The team entered the elevator and rapidly punched in the first code. As the elevator doors were closing, Rekluse took a grenade from her hip and rolled it out the door towards the oncoming soldiers who were now firing towards the team. The doors closed as the grenade exploded.

Once they got to the underground level, the doors opened and the team stepped out with their weapons drawn. The few scientists left in the lab quickly stopped what they were doing and raised their hands. Kasitia’s voice could be heard over the COM links.

“Hey, gang. Someone radioed Tanwar. They know you’re here, and you got giants coming your way. They’re starting to open the hangar now so the aircrafts can leave. I’m going to try to halt them.”

“Be careful,” said Blessed. “We’re coming to you now.”

Slaycick took several plastic handcuffs out of his vest pockets and began tying up the scientists with super speed, then had them sit on the floor. “You all stay put now you hear?” he joked. “Now, which one you know the combination to this door?”

“We don’t need a combination,” said Blessed.

Blessed walked up to the huge, steel-plated door and punched a hole in it with his fist and then pulled it off its hinges. Coming down the corridor were three huge giants with large hydrogen-powered guns aiming straight at Blessed. They fired a few shots, which he managed to dodge as he took cover to the side of the broken doorway.

“I have an idea,” said Tenan as the giants approached. He quickly created a portal in the doorway.

The giants ran through it, thinking it was only black smoke. They stepped out and found themselves falling thousands of feet out of the sky. Tenan quickly closed the portal as the group made its way down to the second elevator door leading to the underground hangar. Blessed typed in the second set of code numbers and they made their way down to assist Kasitia.

When the doors opened, the team stepped out amongst gunfire and panic. Kasitia was going in and out of shadow form, killing Tanwar’s soldiers, who were in a state of confusion. Several of Tanwar’s soldiers started firing towards the team when they entered.

“Split up and let’s finish these boys off!” yelled Blessed.

Two of the aircrafts had already taken off with the giants’ pods attached them.

“We can’t let the other carriers take off, gang!” said Blessed. “Let’s stop them and worry about the other ones later.”

“Tenan, give me three of your timed explosives,” said Slaycick.

Tenan handed Slaycick the bombs, and in a blur, he swiftly placed the three bombs on aircrafts that were preparing to take off. He ran back and hid behind a computer board, undetected. The aircraft carriers exploded and caught on fire, never having a chance to leave the ground. Suddenly, the pods opened and the other giants stepped out running from the planes that just caught fire.

The crew was now split up, fighting off soldiers and giants. Aganathin’s axe ripped through the giants as he swung with one motion. Rekluse and Tenan fought off soldiers with precise shooting and some ballistic, martial art techniques. One soldier swung at Rekluse. She blocked his punch, and while still holding onto his arm, she jumped in the air, wrapped both of her legs around his neck, and brought him to the ground. With her sheer strength, she hyper-extended his arm with a strong twist, causing an extreme fracture to his limb. She then pulled a Desert Eagle handgun from her hip and stuck it in the soldier’s mouth. Squeezing off two rounds, she then moved on, continuing to dominate enemies using hand-to-hand combat.

Soldiers from Tanwar’s army were dying by dozens. The hangar was filling up with bodies as more men kept falling.

Slaycick zoomed around the hangar, slicing down giants and soldiers with his double swords. Blessed went on a rampage with one hand on his gun, and with his free hand, he knocked out anyone who was close enough to him. K’nia shot down giants with her stars, while her sister flashed in and out of shadow form, catching her enemies off guard with deathblows and stabs to the heart. The battle lasted less than ten minutes before every giant and soldier was put down by the seven super soldiers.

“Kasitia, where’s Tanwar?” asked Blessed.

“He’s over there, unconscious. When they heard you people storm the building, he made a run for it with General Selur and the doctors. I snatched him in shadow form, knocked him out, and dragged him back behind the barrels. By that time, his men were shooting at me, so I had to begin the fight without you.”

“We’ve finally come face to face with Tanwar Terah. The dictator and leader of The Caste Republic. Finally, in our hands,” said Aganathin.

“No time to relax now. Two carriers got away, carrying ten giants apiece. They’re headed to Israel where their alliances have already been given orders to attack,” said Kasitia “We need to get to Jerusalem to notify Prime Minister Mashol and let him know we have Tanwar.”

“Good work, Kasitia. You’re getting into a habit of knocking out men. Keep it up and you’ll be single for the rest of your life,” joked Slaycick.

“Very funny,” retorted Kasitia, rolling her eyes.

“All jokes aside, because of your smart thinking, we have our guy. Let’s tie him up before he comes to,” said Tenan.

“You’re right,” acknowledged Blessed. “You did what you had to do, Kasitia. Great job.”

Tenan created a portal leading back to Jerusalem. “Let’s get back. Time is not on our side right now,” he reminded the crew.

“One sec,” said Slaycick. The speedster disappeared and reappeared in one second, carrying two scientists on his shoulder. He ran back and got the other scientists who were tied up. He also unhooked several computers from the lab and brought those back.

“We need them to learn more about these giants that were created,” Slaycick continued.  “If one doesn’t talk, we’ll make an example so the other ones will. I’m sure these computers have valuable information on them as well.”

The team entered the portal with the captured dictator, the scientists, and the confiscated computers. A brief victory was won for the moment.

Review + #Giveaway: Alien Contact for Kid Sisters by Edward Hoornaert @GoddessFish

Alien Contact for Kid Sisters
by Edward Hoornaert
GENRE: Science fiction

BLURB:

Marianne Harmon is sick and tired of being just the kid sister of the famous queen of Kwadra Island. Although she daydreams about being a warrior, when rebels bomb the royal ball she’s shunted to one of the many tunnels that honeycomb Kwadra, where she awaits a captain of the valiant Royal Guardians.

Quinn Lebatarde, a scam artist fleeing the police, dons the uniform of a Royal Guardian killed by a tunnel collapse. When Marianne mistakes him for her bodyguard, Quinn can’t decide whether to save the feisty maiden, fall in love with her—or kidnap her. With bloodthirsty rebels pursuing them and a treasure map in his pocket, what will he choose?

Excerpt:

"Fifty, fifty-five, sixty," the white-haired tourist said. "There you go, chief, paid in full."

Chief? Quinn Lebatarde's lips tightened at the insult, but almost immediately, he grinned. The tourist's Rolex watch shouted money to burn, as did his expensive digital SLR camera. Quinn pocketed the money but held onto the cheap, plaster replica of an ancient Kwadran woodcarving the man and his wife were buying.

Time for some fun. Hordes of tourists crowded the streets, celebrating the birth of the heir to Kwadra's throne. Business was great. Only three more 'carvings,' a mask, and some miniature totem poles remained on his rickety street-side table. And now the prospect of conning this man made Quinn's day even brighter.

"All original," he said in the thick accent and broken English dumb tourists expected. If you spoke too well, they didn't believe you hailed from an alternate Earth. "Historic. Maybe I sell too cheap."

Instead of giving them their mythological monster from Kwadra's distant past, he clutched it to his chest. Not hard, though. The trashy fakes broke under the least pressure.

"Too cheap, ahha. Thirty dollah more."

"We had a deal," the tourist's wife said.

With a loving fingertip, Quinn stroked the carving's ugly, wide-open lips. "Fifty dollah more."

"Now wait one minute," said the man. "Isn't this against the law or something?"

"You no on America now. Merkin law useless." Merkin was Kwadrans' slang nickname for Americans, with sexual connotations most of them didn't know—despite English being their native language, not his. "Where you from you no know that?"

My Review:

Marianne is the Queen’s sister not only is she her sister she is her kid sister. Everywhere she goes it is like oh you’re the queen’s kid sister; oh look it’s the queen’s kid sister; make way for the queen’s kid sister. Well Marianne is so tired of being the queen’s kid sister she wants to be recognized for her own self and her own accomplishments.

While Marianne is attending a royal ball it is bombed by rebels so Marianne is sent underground into the tunnels by her ex-boyfriend the king’s brother to meet with a captain of the Royal Guardians. He tells Marianne to stay with the captain and obey him. But of course Marianne is not too good on obeying anybody. She is too head strong for that. She is her own person and will not tolerate it.

Quinn is a guy on the run from the Royal Guardians which pretty much sums of his life as he is a scam artist. After the bombing Quinn runs into the tunnels himself to hide and to stay out of the lime light for a while. Quinn finds a Royal Guardian that has been killed during the bombing. He likes his uniform so decides to take it. After dunning the uniform he runs into Marianne who then mistakes him for the Royal Guardian that she was supposed to meet.

Now when old Quinn finds out who Marianne is he don’t know where to help her, fall in love with her or kidnap her especially after finding out that she was told to obey the captain that he is impersonating. What is a man to do?

But it is not long before Quinn and Marianne has company. Eleven year old Lady Delfina joins them. They find Elfy alone in the tunnels she has been sent there by her maid and told to stay put but after Elfy sees Marianne whom she calls Aunt Marianne because Elfy is a cousin to the king which happens to be Marianne’s brother in-law.

Elfy is a strong and smart little kid who is just like most kids her age she always wants to do just the opposite of what she is told to do and talks up a storm as they say but she is a good kid. The banter between Elfy and Quinn is just hilarious; well and Marianne too.

Alien Contacts for Kid Sisters is not what I expected when reading the summary it was way more and then some. It had you guessing from the beginning and kept you hanging on right up until the end. It was full of mystery, love and funny as well from beginning to end you never knew what direction you were going in next.

If you have not read it then let me suggest that you give it a try I don’t think you will be disappointed in the least. I can’t wait now to give Alien Contact for Idiots book #1 a try. These aliens are unlike any aliens I have had the privilege of meeting before.
